Windows 7 does not wake from sleep to renew DHCP Lease

I am having trouble with DHCP and sleeping Windows 7 systems.  My Windows 7 systems go to sleep after an hour or so.  The Intel and Broadcom NICs we have use ARP offloading so they continue to respond to ARP while the machine is sleeping.
The problem is that after the DHCP lease expires, the NIC continues to respond to the ARP requests and that causes IP conflicts on the network because the computer is responding to ARP requests for an IP address the computer has lost its lease on.  Any
time a computer is asleep for longer than the DHCP lease time then when a new computer gets the IP from the lost lease, an IP conflict is reported because the new leasee does an ARP to see if the IP is in use and the sleeping computers NIC responds to the
ARP and this results in an IP conflict for the new leasee.
I opened a ticket with the Hardware Vendor, which is Dell in this case, and they opened an engineering case with Intel - the NIC OEM.  The outcome of this case what that this is Windows fault.  Windows is supposed to wake up from sleep and renew
its DHCP lease at the lease half life and then go back to sleep.  My computers are not doing this.  They let the lease expire while they are sleeping.
Is there a problem with Windows 7 that prevents it from waking up and renewing its lease periodically?  It is supposed to maintain the lease according to Dell and Intel, but in my case it it not.

Extending the lease time is a bandage on the problem, and it is what we have done while I attempt to resolve the issue.
The network group would like the lease time set to 4 hours.
Extending the lease time doesn't resolve the issue because it only makes the problem occur less freqently.  With a 2 week lease, a machine needs to be asleep for 2 weeks before it causes a problem.  Machines are not likely to be asleep for 2 weeks
very often.
The resolution would be to figure out why a sleeping Windows OS is not maintaining its IP address.  If it is not going to renew the DHCP lease while it is asleep, it is still responsible for updating the TCP stack (and the NIC) to let it know that it
no longer has a lease to that IP address.  The OS has offloaded ARP to the NIC, which continues to respond to ARP while the computer is asleep.  If the OS lets the lease expire, then it needs to notify the NIC to stop responding to ARP requests for
that address.

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Macbook does not wake from sleep properly.

My macbook 2.0ghz core duo, 10.5.6 does not wake form sleep like it should. it behaves similar to when it runs out of battery with a pale screen and a loading bar, like it is restoring the system from the sleep image, although the battery is full. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to sort it out? Perhaps there is something wrong with the battery controller. Any advice appreciated as it is quite annoying.

I am having this same problem. The computer itself is awake, but the display stays blank. I can restart it by pressing the power button then 'R' then 'return'. This just starting happening frequently recently for me. It may be the result of one of the more recent security updates.

  • With Mountain Lion MacPro does not wake from sleep

I have installed Mountain Lion (10.8.1) on a Mac Pro (Model appeared early 2008).
However when the system is sleeping, Mac does not awake from sleep by pressing any key of the keyboard.
    The keyboard is inactive.

That's interesting, I don't use the Apple->Sleep, but I tired it several times with 10.8.1 on my system and it woke up in a timely fashion.
There is something strange going on with it being intermittent for me, a combo of always & intermittent for you.
I suspect there is some combination of circumstances that's not obvious that's causing it.
I've looked through the logs and don't see any clues.
I submitted a bug report some time back.
You might consider submitting one as your situation is a little different and you have a circumstance that always causes the problem.

  • HT201150 macbook air 11" 2013 does not wake from sleep mode. Any ideas?

Since I have changed my macbook air, I had started to have these issues. This is my third macbook air11" and until this one all was fine. All of a sudden I started to have the sleep/wake problem. Oce the lid is closed, it goes to sleep and does not wake up or the battery needs to be charged pops out and I have to charge for 10 minutes and find out that I already have 80-90% battery power. Also the apps open up, but the windows get lost( mail is open, but no window to read the mails) The genius bar checked the laptop twice and finally changed it , but nothing else changed in my life. All the issues are the same, and even getting worse. Just a minute ago, I even lost the WiFi. "There is no hardware message appeared!! Anyone for any ideas?

You're welcome... here's hoping it's not a hardware issue but this test will elimnate any suspicions.
You could also check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

  • MacBook Pro display sometimes does not wake from sleep, display is blank

My computer has been getting a lot of this weird issue that it is asleep, the light is pulsing. But when you go to wake it up, the keyboard lights up, caps light key will work, but the display is blank, nothing makes it turn back on.
I had a friend using it who I let use the guest account, but since the issue kept happening and all the guest account data kept disappearing, I had to create her an account. It's annoying, and sometimes if I catch the crash happening while the unit is display active, I get the color wheel and all the apps freeze up really bad. I'm lucky if I can save my work.
Sleep during this crash will also produce the error. Most recently I was trying to connect my bluetooth keyboard and it kept giving me an error. So I tried to turn off the bluetooth, no dice. Went into the root user, still no dice. Figured maybe the device didn't get reinitialized upon wake from sleep properly, put the unit to sleep and ding dong, wont wake up again!
From the console logs I've been able to find this string:
    5/23/10 1:00:54 PM kernel Sleep failure code 0x00000000 0x21000000
I've not used any hacks or sleep widgets, so I don't know what the issue is.
Everytime I reboot from this I fsck the drive and repair permissions. I've tried zapping the PRAM also, next stop is delete the power management plist and reset the SMC. Who knows if any of it will work?
    Anyone have any ideas?

AppleCare is the magic word. Time to contact them.
Btw the machine is 10.6.3 I hadn't updated my settings before I posted the initial question.
I was actually going to suggest that, but noticed in your later posts you had updated the info.
As for the smc and pram both were done today, so we will see what the story is. I also deleted the energy .plist file and had it recreated from within root.
Just curious why you're working in root? You should be able to do anything we've discussed from an admin account, and there's lots of potential for mishaps in root.
As for dlrunning DU, I was under the impression that it just ran fsck through the DU GUI. At least that's what it looks like when you view the console log for DU. I'll give it a try though.
I'm just repeating what Apple suggests.
I'm just worried that the little glitches are adding up to something catastrophic.

  • MacBook Pro 10.5.2 Screen does not wake from sleep

This is probably the 80th time this issue has been posted.
I am hoping someone at Apple or otherwise can give me an answer on it.
What is the deal with this? Why can't my Macbook wake properly?
I thought this stuff was supposed to be "Reliable" and "easy to use" ?
I love OS X, but this wake from sleep issue is making me second guess my decision to switch.

I've been experiencing this issue 2-3 times a day, and it bugs the **** out of me.
I've followed the steps on the link provided.
I note there is no noise or visual indicator to suggest the reset took place (possibly because tehre is no power source there?) but I'll report back if I have any further hangs on the screen when waking up.
    Cheers!

  • MacBook Pro does not wake from sleep in Lion

A lot of people are reporting that their MBP freezes (which happens to me, too) but this concerns a totally different issue.
About 5-10% of the time, when I return to my MBP after it has initiated sleep, I cannot get the system to respond.
Keyboard should wake the MBP. Power button should wake. Opening the lid should wake. None do.
The system is cold. No fans, to backlight, to nuttin'. All that works is the sleep indicator, which turns on and off when I open and close the lid.
The only way to use the system is to force restart (hold down power, reboot) at which time the system does its 'resume'-thing... as if it ran out of juice and went into hibernate.
How do we fix this? I'm running a clean install of Lion (10.7.1) (same issue with 10.7.0) - installed it fresh after formatting the HDD - so Snow Leopard remnants from upgrades cannot be a problem here.

I began having issues whereby my Macbook Pro would freeze after waking from sleep...whether automatic sleep mode or manually-induced.  Got worse by the day, so I looked in this Forum and found that the problem was widespread..
My issue came when I tried to open MS Office Mac (Outlook) or open Firefox.  In nearly every instance, the computer (and sometimes the screen) would freeze, sometimes with the little whirling ball remaining on forever.  All these forced me to power down with the on-off button, which was distasteful.
After reading all the posts in the Mac forums regarding this issue, I determined that the issue most likely to have caused my problem was Microsoft Silverlight.  I recalled that I had recently allowed an update.
I went into every folder I could find, including those related to MS Office, and sent every incidence of Silverlight (including folders) to the trash.  Then I shut down and restarted the computer, and ran some tests by putting the unit to sleep and waking after a wait time.
After several tests, I have determined that I am now back in good order, sans Silverlight.  I think Silverlight is off the radar for my future!

  • 2013 Mac Pro DisplayPort Monitor does not wake from Sleep.

On my 2013 MP I have dual monitors:
    One connected DVI-to-MiniDisplayPort a ViewSonic 24"
    Second connected DisplayPort-to-MiniDisplayPort a MonoPrice 27" 2560x1440
When the computer comes out of Sleep or Off the 27" display does not come out of Sleep Mode.
If I unplug and replug the MiniDisplayPort connection from the MP the Display will turn on correctly.
Never had this issue with the 24" both monitors go into a sleep/hibernate mode(yellow power light on displays) when the computer turns off or goes to sleep.
When the computer comes out of sleep the 27" backlight turns on briefly but then goes back into sleep mode.
Troubleshooting: PRAM Reset and alternative ports on the MacPro with no luck.
    Any thoughts??
    Thanks in advance.

Having issues waking my computer from sleep. Seems to be getting worse lately. Can work fine for one or two days then when clicking mouse keyboard there is no response. I have to press the power button for six seconds to turn off then turn on again.

HP 15t j000 will not wake from sleep/hibernate Windows 8,8.1,10. I have to restart. I've searched high and low for answer to this. I've seen videos, played with power settings.  I hoped each Windows system upgrade would fix the problem. No go. Anyone with any ideas?

Hi , Thank you for your query.  I understand that after upgrading to Windows 10, it will not wake from sleep mode unless you restart. The first step I would try is to disable "Hybrid Boot' or "Hybrid Shutdown.  This can be done by turning off "Fast Startup" Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 Next try running the "Update Troubleshooter"  Windows Update troubleshooter. Once launched, it should show a screen like this. Use the second option "Background Intelligent Transfer Service", it should lead to a force update of 'Windows Updates' that may not be automatically being applied, that could fix some of these issues.

  • IPhone will not wake from sleep and locks up with new MMS update

    Hey everyone,
Has anyone had these problems with their new update as well?
    1) Sometimes my iPhone will not wake from sleep mode, I have to hold down both buttons for it to restart...I do this about 5 times a day!
    2) I cannot send SMS messages and when I send more than one sometimes the iPhone locks up and will not unfreeze.
Does anyone know if this is an Apple update issue or if it is an AT&T issue? And if this is being addressed?
Apple, if you read this could there be an update to all members what is going on?

I am experiencing the same issue with iPhone 3GS. After yesterday update to 3.1.2, it is a bit better in the sense that I can restart the iPhone slightly faster but still getting frozen screen during a call. I will try to call support once more. I don't believe that the problem is solved in the new update.

  • IPhone 1.1.4 will not wake from sleep mode

    Hi all,
I have an iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware. The problem that I have is that the phone will not wake from sleep mode by pressing the "home" button. I have to press both the "home" and "sleep/power" buttons and hold them for 6 seconds for the phone to restart. I did restore the phone twice - did not solve the problem. Then, one day, I left it charging for about 3 days and when I came back it started working fine. Not for long though( After about a week of normal usage the wake up problem came back. I don't know what to do. I don't think it's the software problem, since I did complete restoration 2 times.
If the phone is connected to a charger or computer - it wakes up fine.
    Thanks, Gene K

    rimini,
When you've restored the iPhone, have you tried setting it up as a new phone? This would truly eliminate software as a possibility.
If setting it up as a new phone doesn't correct the issue, it's probably time for service: apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
    Hope this helps,
