Windows 7 - sporadical sysprep error in specialize phase

Hey Everyone,
Currently I have some trouble with the unattended setup of Windows 7.
The Image was created like this...
Windows 7 Installation - Boot into Audit Mode - Software Installation & Configuration - sysprep - create Base Image
This Image is deployed with AddOn Images for Drivers, ZCM, AV, etc.
And a separate "Sysprep-AddOn" containing Stuff like dpinst.exe, the UNATTEND.XML etc.
When Deploying this, it works in 80% without any problems, but the other times the Setup fails in Specialize Phase (Windows-Shell-Setup).
The sysprep logs do not contain any information beyong the sysprep-run when building the image.
This happens on three different hardware types all the same.
This is the Windows Shell Setup part from my unattend file
Code:
<component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
<RegisteredOwner>Mitarbeiter</RegisteredOwner>
<RegisteredOrganization>Customer Name XYZ</RegisteredOrganization>
<ShowWindowsLive>false</ShowWindowsLive>
<TimeZone>W. Europe Standard Time</TimeZone>
<BluetoothTaskbarIconEnabled>false</BluetoothTaskbarIconEnabled>
<DoNotCleanTaskBar>true</DoNotCleanTaskBar>
</component>
"ComputerName" within unattend is deleted in order to have the setup ask for the workstation name - which works just great, if Setup does not crash
I found a few information on this problem, related to the copy Profile action, which were caused by deleting user profiles, which werent completely removed from the registry, but this isnt the case here, only the administrator is used during Configuration, no users added/deleted. I also checked the "pre-sysprep" state of the installation, no false profiles in registry

Okay i just remembered I once again checked the wrong logs.

It is not that.  Based on other posts I have found that if I delete this key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Sysprep\Generalize, value {b3257dc1-2617-6667-6a6f-2fe2739a2b89} sysprep works fine.  Does anyone know the risks
    of deleting this key?

    Its a Windows error

So, this is what I did (again) this morning.   Note, it differs in many instances that what you did, but these were my exact steps:
    1)  Fresh Install from “en_windows_8_1_enterprise_x64_dvd_2971902.iso” (current on TechNet as of last week) into a Virtual box *offline*.   NOTE:  This is Enterprise where
    you used “Pro”
    2)  Used “express settings” to set up non-Microsoft/Local account:  bec-admin
    3)  Did *not* join domain.
    4)  Installed Virtual Box 4.3.4 tools (so I could get shared folders/internet to fully work.)  Rebooted (as is required by the tools installer).  NOTE:  this is the
    only 3rd party software installed.
    5)  Changed the clock (as the default/express install puts me in the Pacific Time Zone (changed this to EST).   Connected laptop to Internet.
    6)  Ran Windows Update -- 12 updates listed.  Installed and rebooted.
    7)  I deleted all restore points and ran “Disk Cleanup” to delete anything listed (including system files) and rebooted and left windows running
    8)  For something different this time, I left the VM up and running for about an hour in case something magically has to run in the background after login to clean up stuff.
I do not need to run “osspprearm” because Windows is automatically activated on our network by this time.
    An hour later….
    9)  I run sysprep /oobe /generlize /unnattend:<my unnattend.xml> file — from the bec-admin account (contents of unattend.xml file are listed above...)
    10)  Rebooted.  Logged back in to “bec-admin”.
And — as usual with my experiences in this thread — only about 6 Metro app icons are on the start screen and other apps are missing from the list of all apps, but some start to install
if I watch, and some “error” — in this attempt “Store” says “error” on it -- as they install
And any newly created accounts (at this point) only have the 5 Metro app icons in them.
The only way I’ve been able to make this work -- and by "work" I mean have the ability to create new accounts which contain *all* Metro applications — which is not optimal — is to have
an additional local account that I *only* run sysprep from (call it “configure” for example)— and leave the “bec-admin” account manually created (either by sysprep or manually *prior* to sysprep as a second administrator-level account.)   I then would
need to log into “bec-admin” to install software (or provision new accounts, etc) and then log back into “configure” to resysprep the system.
Note — I did try setting skiprearm and persistalldeviceinstall to 1 prior to running sysprep above (after restoring from a snapshot) — but that didn’t matter, either -- the only difference
was that "Camera" came up with an "error" this time.
    I fully believe there's a difference between "Pro" and "Enterprise" -- or 64-bit vs. 32-bit -- here.

I have a base template (which has never been sysprep'd) from which I create linked clones.  After the linked clone comes up, I run the following command:
    c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /reboot /unattend:c:\windows\panther\unattend.xml
This works fine for the first few linked clones, but after about 3-4 linked clones are running, I start to hit "A fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine."

    Hi,
This is typical of an OEM license issue.
To avoid this in the future you should look at site/volume licensing.
    Anyway.
so, first check if you can re-arm by runing the
slmgr.vbs /dlv and check the re-arm counter, if it set to zero.. you need to do the following :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929828 (set the <SkipRearm>1</SkipRearm> like in the example, note: this option will make the product key window to appear in the setup process).
you can also try running : slmgr.vbs -rearm, to rearm Windows.
after that, let's come back to the sysprep process.. for syspreping already syspreped machine we have to change few keys in the registry :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus\GeneralizationState\
    CleanupState:2
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus\GeneralizationState\
    GeneralizationState:7
After done with the registry, do the following :
Start -> Run : msdtc -uninstall (wait few seconds)
Start -> Run : msdtc -install (wait few seconds)
    Restart the machine
Check the registry for the right registry keys values
sysprep with the new XML answerfile.

  • Sysprep fails in customed installed Windows 8 with Error " A fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine "

    Hi There,
I have a Lenovo x240 and i have installed a fresh copy of W8 on it (without any key since we install license keys individually). What i basically do is to download and run Lenovo System Update which downloads and installs chipset drivers automatically. Once
this is completed i run sysprep with command: sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown (we do not use any answer file) and proceed to capture the image afterwards. This has been working fine with laptops/computers running Windows7. It is not the case with Windows
    8 though.
I have check the setuperr file for errors and states that is failing to secure drivers (intel\openCl). Error is below:
Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue are greatly appreciate it.

I am also getting this SAME error on a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 that is brand new out of the box with no updates applied to it whatsoever.
I literally open computer, configure prefs... then sysprep with generalize.

    Hi,
In addition to the KB provided by Yannick, I also would like to share the following link with you to better understand the cause of this issue:
    Capture an Image for Deployment
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824938.aspx
Please note the “Caution” part of this article:
Don't use the Windows Store to update your Windows Store apps before running sysprep /generalize. Sysprep fails to generalize the image in this scenario. This issue also applies to the Windows Store apps that are included with Windows 8 (for example,
Mail, Maps, Bing Finance, Bing News, and others). This can occur when you are customizing your installation in audit mode as the built in administrator, or when using a specific user account.
Sysprep /generalize requires that all apps are provisioned for all users. However, when you update an app from the Windows Store, that app becomes non-provisioned and is tied that user account.

  • Sysprep fails during generalize phase

    Hi All,
Having a few issues with sysprep when trying to generate an image for Hyper-v deployment. Using this command sysprep runs for a minute or so before throwing an error in the generalize phase

    Doing a search on the second last line where it is referring to the sysprep process halting led me to this KB article;
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2769827
    When doing a list of the Appx packages as suggested in the KB article I get these;
    PackageFullName        : windows.immersivecontrolpanel_6.2.0.0_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyPackageUserInformation : {S-1-5-21-2875202613-374390014-791015221-500 [Administrator]: Installed}PackageFullName        : WinStore_1.0.0.0_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyPackageUserInformation : {S-1-5-21-2875202613-374390014-791015221-500 [Administrator]: Installed}
    However, when I run the suggested I get this;
    Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName windows.immersivecontrolpanel_6.2.0.0_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyRemove-AppxProvisionedPackage : The system cannot find the file specified.At line:1 char:1+ Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName windows.immersivecontrolpanel ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage], COMException    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Dism.Commands.RemoveAppxProvisionedPackageCommand
Any reason the Appx cmdlets would not be able to remove a package that is being listed as installed? Am I barking up the wrong tree altogether here in regards to my sysprep failing? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ahh - that's exactly what I did. MS are a complete pain in forcing you to install the desktop experience on a SERVER just to get the Disk Cleaner. At lest with previous versions of Win server you could extract the clearnermgr exe and copy to the relevant
location. But you can't do this with 2012 - you HAVE to install the Desktop Experience!!!!!!
There are literally hundreds of post out there about this. Why can they not understand that the Disk Clean tool is useful, (especially if you have just run a bunch of update on a new install) but the rest of the Desktop Experience is pointless on a server.
There has got to be a way to remove the Desktop Experience stufff without having to re-install in order to sysprep the machine??????

  • PI 7.1 upgrade error in GETSYNC_PROFILES_CHANGED phase

    Hello
Currently I am upgrading an XI 7.0 system to PI 7.1. The downtime phases have just started and I've hit an error in the phase 'GETSYNC_PROFILES_CHANGED'; the error is 'Not enough space for string replacement'. Based on the phase name, and the previous phases, it looks as if the error is something to do with the profiles. The relevant upgrade logs have no useful info in them except for the string space message.
I have done the usual SDN, SAP Marketplace and Google searches but could not find an answer to my problem. I have also opened a high priority call with SAP but they have not come up with an answer yet. Does anybody have any useful advice?
The system being upgraded is running on Windows 2003 Server R2 64bit, has an Oracle 10.2.0.4 DB, and the source system was XI/PI 7.0 SP15.
    Thanks.

    Hello Rohit
    Freespace is more than sufficient:
    C:\ = 5.2GB (O/S)
    D:\ = 18.9GB (Oracle & SAP)
    E:\ = 8.53GB (Oracle)

  • MDT Deployment for Windows 8 (Sysprep failes with generalization setting)

    Here's my issue...
I'm trying to capture and redeploy Windows 8.  In of itself, the capturing and deploying works well.  Except for one thing, I can't default the desktop nor can I default the Start Tiles for the start tiles.  Upon a visit with Microsoft and
confirmation of a few colleagues, I tried the tutorial listed here, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134269, using method 1 the copyprofile.
I have this set up for the unattended on the MDT deployment, but my problem is the issue that I'm running into which is the failure in sysprep running the /generalize tag.  Whether I use OOBE or Audit results in the same thing.  I have built a
couple of fresh images as well and sysprep keeps failing.  I've attached the error log below.  So far research has come up with nada, so I can't even getting started on troubleshooting the error.
    Here's the error log below.

Did you ever figure out how to make this work?
I have the same problem with my Win8 64 image -- as soon as I installed the 11 Microsoft Metro app updates from "Store", I can no longer sysprep my image without getting the same "fatal error" (with the exact same log -- except for a different "Package"

The app updates are *coming from Microsoft* -- so why would I need to provision them (according to that article?)
    This seems like a bug...
(The workaround, of course, is to just not update Metro apps on my main image, but that seems rather silly to not be
    allowed to do that...)

  • Windows Blue Screen Error Message Appears As Soon As IPod Connected

Everytime I connect my IPod to my computer, I get the Windows Blue Screen error message. Thought it was the cable, so plugged cable in by itself. No problem. Uninstalled IPod and ITunes software and then plugged in IPod, still got the Blue Screen. The Blue Screen says something about "recent plugged in device problem". It is not the cable, it must be the IPod. Did not have this problem when I bought it. Tried it on labtop and get the same error message. I can't do updater or anything that requires me to plug the IPod into a computer because the Blue Screen appears immediately. When I unplug, the Blue Screen remains and locks up the computer so I have to restart each time. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help.

Hi Mike thank you for replying,
I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
If you can help me out or suggest where to search it would be much appreciated.
    Thx

When I connect my iTouch to my PC (windows 7) an error message is displayed reading "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from sync services. Reconnect or try again later". I have completely uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes. I have also completely reset my iTouch to factory defaults. I have even followed all the advice provided previously to other forum member with the same problem. Nothing seems to work. Please help me someone.

I'm getting the same problem with both my IPad 4 and iPhone 5
Just started a few weeks back, Since then I have had two Itunes updates.
Is this something Apple is aware of and trying to fix?

  • Windows-No Disk Error Mess

I get the following error message upon start-up or reboot for Audigy SE:?Windows-No Disk?c0000003 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c.... I have the option to Continue-Cancel-Retry??The sound card seems to work otherwise, but this error is annoying and I would like to resolve it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the install CD as this is a new install, but the error persists. Can someone suggest a Fix-It?Thanx!?Lawrence

I have found the Windows No Disk error message to be caused by having a card reader installed in your system in some cases. If you change the dri've letters of the readers from i.e. F: and G: to for example O: and P: (as I did on my machine) the error message will stop. Worth a try.......worked for me. Hope you find this reply useful, unlike the previous wise a$$ replies.
