Windows roaming profiles and home directories - whats the difference?

I realise this is probably more of a Windows oriented question, but as I'm planning to host Windows accounts on our Panther server I thought I'd ask here as well...
A Windows account has a profile and a home directory. The profile has a 'My Documents' folder where our Windows users are used to storing their files. But there is now also a H: home directory.
I'm confused - does this mean I should recommend my users start to use H: for storing their stuff and try not to put anything in My Documents. That's because it gets downloaded from the server at login and uploaded when they logout, right? But then what's folder redirection all about?
(Is this a valid question in this group or should I really be asking in a Windows forum?)

I too ran into the same problem. I ended up redirecting all of the folders except Local Settings, Temp, and Temporary Internet Files. In WGM I specified the home drive map. But I didn't enter anything for the profile. Simply because if you are redirecting the user folders to the home folder that is you centralized profile.
Also since the Netlogon share has to be made for the default user settings. You can use the Poledit utility to use policy templates for further desktop management. The poledit utility is a part of the W2K Administrative Tools package. I believe it can be found on any W2K server CD.

You cannot "update" from what you have to any of the applications you mention. It will have to be a straight purchase or subscription at full price.
Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Lightroom is all about volume, and very light editing.

btw I don't like that much all these import parameters around the desktop, difficult to check everything imho, a simple list with option would be more clear probably. I can't see the benefit in this new import UI layout.

Ah, you're looking at the big To button? They both do the same job and when you update one, it updates the other. The Destination panel allows you more detailed settings, but the big button at the top (which is usually just used in the compact dialog) allows you to navigate using the OS dialog and shows a list of recent folders. Use whichever suits you best.

Whats the difference between the information shown in one place and in the other? Why is the information shown with different names in different menus?

Cloud Data Synchronization tasks to delete these objects Parent and Child have LOOKUP relationships between them.Deleing data from Child objects did not give any error. You can certainly use iWork, though I hesitate to recommend it to a seasoned Windows user simply because it would add another level of the unfamiliar with which you would have to gain familiarity. The iWork applications are certainly very competent and in most respects both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. They are not 100% compatible however, though that typically manifests itself in document formatting issues rather than anything more significant.
I have never attempted to import emails from a Windows system into MacOS - other than in Outlook connected to an Exchange server, thus not really an issue at all. I doubt that the Mail app in MacOS can import directly, but of course you could always set the account(s) up on the Mac and then forward emails you want to keep from the PC. Not elegant, but it works. Virtually any Windows document or file, whichever application created it, can be opened or converted for use on a Mac, and using both systems on my desk each day I rarely see any issues switching stuff from one machine to the other. You may stumble over one or two issues, but likely not significant.
In switching platforms there will be some inevitable issues, not so much with being able to import your stuff because there's usually a workaround or a utility that can help, but just with getting familiar with the platform and the differences between Windows and MacOS that can obscure their similarities. From time to time the support community here hears from a user who has found the migration very problematic and regrets it, but for the most part the phrase 'I should have done this years ago...' is rather more prevalent!

After the Apple logo appears, what happens then? Can you hear any sounds or if you tap on the screen, does it seem like apps can open or are you just seeing a black screen? You might have a hardware problem, but you can try restoring the software and see what happens.
Read this in its entirety before you do anything. Make sure you read the sections at the end about using recovery mode.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

10.5.2 and Windows 2003 Domain and Home Folders

This has probably been beaten to death but cant seem to find the answer that I'm looking for.
I can add the mac to the 2003 domain fine with no problems and can get the user authentication fine, access to the network shares and printers.
The question that I had was is there a way to have the mac user's home folder map directly to the user share off the server like you would on a windows side?(ie like the roaming profile)
I have tried all the options for the home folder setup under the directory access utility but it only mounts the share as a share and you have to manually copy over data if you want it to save on the server. Or is there some way to synchronize it when you log off?

New Server Accounts and Home Directories

Greetings Everyone,
Hoping someone here has enough patience to help me figure out what I'm sure is a realtively simple problem...
I'm setting up a Mac Mini Server (10.6.8) in my Unviersity Lab and connecting 6 Mac Mini's (Snow Leopard). We have a bunch of people that need accounts, and obviously using a network account run from the server is the simplest and best option.
As I'm not THAT familiar with servers and/or Mac's, I've spent quite a bit of time looking through the Workgroup Manager and Server Preferences, and have managed to set up accounts for everyone and tweak them to my desired preferences.
However, when I try to login to a user network account from another computer, the login screen "shakes" and does not allow me to login. After some sleuthing through various forums, I've come to the conclusion that my "home Directories" are not set up properly.
This is where I am confused. I understand the idea behind the home directory, but do not know what to type in the dialog box in the following fields:
Mac OS X Server/Shar Point URL (afp?)
Path to Home Folder
Full Path
I plan to make the home directories on the Mac Mini Server's Secondary Hardrive under a folder called "Lab group".
Can anyone guide me to a tutorial or perhaps let me know what I should write in that field?
Also, if anyone has any great resources on setting up servers, that would be fantastic.

The first step is to define an AFP sharepoint in Server Admin, and check the box for "Enable Automount" (under the share point tab) which you then set for user home folders and group folders.
Then, in WGM, on the Home tab for each of your users, you will see that sharepoint as an option. Simply select it, click "create home now" and then save.

My last successful backup was this morning at 7:16 am. I did do a series of Software Update this morning, one of which, a security update I believe, required a restart.

Time Machine can't read some data it needs from your backups (each of those date-stamps is one of your backups).
That's usually a problem with the drive itself, but could be the directory on it. First be sure all plugs are snug and secure, then see if you can repair it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, post back with the results. Also either tell us what kind of Mac you have, what version of OSX you're running, or post that to your Profile, so it's accessible.

Have new pc running on Windows 8.1 and OfficejetPro L7480 but the printer won't scan. It will print via usb and I've downloaded the full drivers Full_win_WW_140_408 but won't install. I've also tried to install the original drivers but they were for windows XP. The printer is approx 7 years old but still works (or did!)

Welcome to the forums!
I noticed your post about your printer not installing properly for you on your Windows 8.1.
I would suggest trying to use the HP Print and Scan Doctor to install the printer.
If that doesn't work, please let me know what exactly happens when you try to install, for example, do you see an error message or code? Does the installation stop?
Have you tried installing both USB and wireless methods?

On 3 different PC and 3 different iPad 2 when I installed iTunes 11.1 Windows Autoplay recognise the iPad but iTunes do not.
The device does not appear in iTunes and thus neither synchronisation nor backup are possible.
Reverting to the previous version of iTunes solved the issue.
However with IOS 7 iTunes 11.1 is required and I am back with the same issue. Could you please help?

If you try syncing with iTunes again, perhaps the phantom album will be erased since it does not exist on the computer.
Have you tried restarting or maybe resetting the iPad to see if the album will disappear?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
