Windows Updates problem - Restart Now Loop

Hello everyone,
i have a problem where i cannot "check for updates". When i open Windows Update i have a message telling me to restart my computer to install important updates.
I have restarted a hell of a lot of times and the message remains. If i press "check for updates" i get the message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because you must first restart the computer so that a previous installation
can be completed". Can anyone help? :(

Resolved the problem.
Had to delete all the pending windows updates which were apparently "corrupt" or whatever.
Open regedit - TAKE A BACKUP FIRST.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired
This key shows when we install windows update and after the system reboots it gets automatically deleted, in case of corrupt entries in this key the key stays and Keeps promoting for restart, so we have to manually the "rebootRequired"
key.

Hi,
Since each UI change related to registry keys, I suggest we first modify the related registry key to see if the changes can be kept.
1. Run regedit to open Registry editor.
2. Find the SID corresponded to you user account by check USERNAME under HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-****-****-****\Volatile Environment
3. Locate to following key under your SID: HKU\S-1-5-21--****-****-****\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.

• Stuck in "Failure configuring Windows Updates: reverting changes" loading loop

I just bought a new Asus notebook with Windows 8 today. I wanted to upgrade to Windows 8.1, so I had to first go through with all other updates. When the minor updates got to 98% the computer changed to the "Failure Configuring Windows Updates Reverting
Changes" screen. It has been on this same loading screen for several hours now. I have tried restarting the computer multiple times. I have looked up several troubleshooting videos and guides, but everyone else seems to have been able to leave the loading
screen and fix the problem in the actual working computer. I am still stuck in the loading... loading... loading screen. What do I do to get back to the home page? Or anything just to fix the problem.

Kayla,
Thank you a 100 times! Being hooked through a modem to my network, as opposed to a direct link, was EXACTLY the problem.
After wasting 2 hours in the other sections of this forum through numerous threads of the same issues (with the same cut and paste answers by support engineers) it was just that simple. Bam! 5 minutes all better.
What alarms me is that not one of the dozens of posts i read through did an Engineer ever ask if they were hooked through wifi or a router. Even Dell's hideous support center will go through the basics first before launching into the hoop jumping.
Again bless you. If I could I'd buy you a drink, or cookies, whichever you prefer :)

Hi,
In the link you posted above, I provided six suggestions. I would like to confirm that did you tried all of these suggestions?
If not, please try them and let us know the result.
================================
Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue.
Suggestion 2: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update service.
Suggestion 3: Reset Windows Update components to check the result. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article:
How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
Suggestion 4: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe) to scan and repair the system files. If some files cannot be repaired automatically, you may replace them manually. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft KB and TechNet
articles:

• Pavilion dv7 4050ed - Windows Update Problems After First Installation

I have only just today received my brand new HP Pavilion dv7 4050ed and commenced installation straight away. There were no problems in the initial installation and I booted Windows for the first time successfully and let it do its auto installs for things like Java and Adobe Reader. I then moved to update and patch the laptop with Windows Update but immediately noticed that something was wrong. Upon opening Windows Update I was met with a white cross in a red shield to signify an error. When I prompted it to "Check for Updates" I was met with an error message stating, "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I get the same error message when I try to run Windows Live Messenger.
After multiple restarts and checking in the control panel that the update service was allowed and working, the error message still appears whenever I try to update or patch my machine. How can this kind of thing happen to a brand new machine that I've had for less than a day and has only had its basic settings chosen? It simply will not update, or even recognize that the update service is available. The internet is fully functional so it isn't any kind of connection problem.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be?
I probably should just add that the laptop is a Dutch purchase with a bilingual setup. I chose the English setup option but was advised to include this information in case it could in any way affect the update system.

HP support provided me with the following link:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02219204&cc=nl&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4213233
On this page there's a download called sp47845. After installing this, everything was working again.

• Windows Update froze, restarted computer, can't boot into anything

Before I start, I've had to resort to my iPhone for this thread creation.
I had finally got vista installed via boot camp (obviously), and I was playing Gears of War. The game would freeze occassionally, so I was checking the Internet out, and remembered a story not too long ago about GFW-Live update that came out last month. I ran a form of Windows Update to check for it, and came up two things for GFW, plus a .NET SP 1 update as well. I say a "form" of WU because I didn't open WU from the control panel, but from a website that opened this window on my computer for GFW specifically.
Here's where things went downhill. When WU got around to the .NET thing, the progress would fill up, then start again. It kept doing this over and over. I checked online for anything, and it referrred me to open WU itself. 62 important updates, 84 altogether. So I said "let's just do this".
Well, it was doing it's thing, and number 14 was the .NET thing from before. I was afraid it would hang up, and it did just that. Telling it to stop didn't do a thing, so I shut the computer down the bad way, which was the only way to, unfortunately. Task manager couldn't do anything for me, again.
After about 10 reboots and attempts to get into safe mode and getting nowhere but to the initial loading bar, which would freeze, I went to reboot into OS X. Same problem. It's freezing at the apple logo. I inserted the OS X disk to see what I could do, and that froze (yes, im holding option to select the cd at boot up). I recently upgradedy HDD, so my computer illiterate side of me is screaming "hard drive problem".
Here's my proposed solution: Swap the old HDD back in, use the disk to reinstall OS X, and use my time machine back up to get back on my computer in at least some form. CCC my internal to external. Put new HDD back in, erase, reformat, repartition, reinstall windows.
Anybody have a solution asides from my apocalyptic view?

Well, a little over a week, and no response. Not even Microsoft could help. But I did find the problem, if anyone else ever has this problem:
Windows Update (WU) did not recognize I did not have Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 installed. So, it tried to install updates that weren't compatible with my system. I had to go to Microsoft's website to download both SP1 and SP2 (WU didn't have either one of them in the update list). Having to install SP1 before SP2 is absolutely stupid; SP2 should supersede SP1 in all aspects, or at least include SP1's update files in itself.
After applying both SPs (of course, after installing the Boot Camp driver from the OS X disk), I could finally run WU and install all available updates. Computer runs just fine now.

• Windows update problems

I am having problems with Windows Update through a BM 3.9 proxy server.
There is no authentication required. I have tried all the sets the
Micro$oft recommends and still no joy. Setting the proxy in the Internet
Options and transferring into "netsh winhttp" does not work. The same
computer (a notebook) taken outside the network and with proxy server reset
to "none" works fine.
I have other computers that do not update as well, but this is my current

• Why four Windows Update related services now listed in Services in French?

I was surprised to see these listed in Services,
"Mise a jour automatique" = Automatic Updates
"Centre de securite" = Windows Security Center service (wscsvc.dll).
"Pare-feu Windows / Partage de connexion Internet" = Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing
"Service de transfert intelligent en arricre-plan" =
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
System is Windows XP SP3 Pro updated from original install of English version Windows XP SP2 Professional.
Drivers had been modified days ago, just hours before I noticed this.
wuauserv.dll
wscsvc.dll
BITS = qmgr.dll
SharedAccess = _______
I was investigating why network service DNS at 50% CPU continuously.
I realize I don't even need these for XP since no new updates and other programs can check for missing updates.
My second PC with the same XP SP3, installed from same source, OEM XP SP2 cd updated to SP3, doesn't have this problem. Those drivers dated 2008.

I know its possible for language packs to be added via Windows Update, that may have happened. Why it would randomly change only a few processes is peculiar. I do, however, love your picture :D

• MacBook Pro froze on update so restarted now I only get to logo and loading animation

I was updating my MacBook Pro 15" i7 late 2010 when it seemed to freeze saying 'moving one item'. I left it for a while 1.5 hrs and still no change so restarted the MBP.

• Itunes update required restart, now my laptop will not start up

So I downloaded Itunes 8.0 and when it finished it gave me a dialog box that said i had to restart to make the changes effective. I said OK, but instead of restarting my laptop, it shut it down. I have tried many times to start it up,and NOTHING is working. I called HP and they could not fix it and wanted me to ship it to them. They will do a system restore which will erase my 8000 songs and photos. Please help I am running Vista and there seem to be a lot of problems with this update.

It is a laptop, and the only thing it does is the lights flash on for maybe a second, and then it turns off. I managed to get it to turn on, but the screen was completely black and the keypad was unresponsive to all keystrokes... HP wants me to send it to them and they will do a system restore which will wipe out everything.... Very bad news for me.

• Windows Update does not work

Windows update always says that there are no new updates (for months now - obviously it's not true). When I try running manually an update file, it almost always gets stuck on "Searching for updates on this computer".
Also, usually when I run a program (such as task manager), I succeed only on second try. First time results in: "the stub received bad data".
I tried all these in different combinations with very limited success:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
del C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*.*
regsvr32 <lots of dlls>
stopping and restarting these: wuauserv , bits , cryptsvc
chkdsk c:
Windows update troubleshooter
Microsoft FixIt
Any ideas how I could fix my windows update?

Hi,
For the error "the stub received bad data", please check Event Viewer firstly. Generally speaking, it would identify this error message.
For Windows update problem, Did you install any other updates? Did you installed Widnows 8.1 update 1?
If this problem persists, I would like to suggest you install Windows 8.1 update 1 manually.

• IE 11 Does not load pages and "Stops Responding" After 11/26/2013 Windows Update

I have Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. IE 11. (Doesn't matter if I try to open 32 or 64 bit IE)
I keep Automatic Updates on and they install as soon as they are available.
Everything on my PC was running fine 11/25/13.
I came to it 11/26/13 after Windows Updates ran and now whenever I open any webpages, it does not load the web page 100%, no hyperlinks can be clicked on and once you attempt to click on anything. I get the "IE 11 has stopped responding" bubble.
It also seemed to affect Firefox which does not completely load pages either.
Any shove in the correct way to help solve this would be helpful.

Robert -
Anyone who has gathered over 13,000 points is certainly to be respected as being super smart and uber helpful. However, your response is inadequate on two counts.
First, "stopped working" is not an inexact phrase, nor is it a euphemism trotted out by a newbie who hasn't the skill to describe the problem accurately. "stopped working" is an exact part of the error message issued by Windows. Of course it would
help if Windows would issue error messages that are more useful, but that is a different issue. For the purposes of this discussion, "stopped working" as part of the exact error message is a useful piece of information.
Second, despite your excellent suggestions for hunting down the problem, I'm guessing that few people here have the time or inclination to be beta testers for Microsoft. Even if the exact cause is found, it is not likely that anyone here will
be able to fix the problem. There are literally hundreds of people complaining about this problem in multiple forums. If you know your consumer behavior metrics, then you know that means tens of thousands are affected. This is systemic, not
a random problem on a few errant machines. Microsoft needs to know that they have a major problem on their hands and they need to fix it. I saw this problem starting with IE 10. Is it any wonder that in that time, IE usage has fallen greatly
while Chrome has become the dominant browser? (The only reason I am bothering to write instead of just shifting to Chrome is that Chrome also has its bugs, one of which affects a web app I use several times a week, so I need a functioning version of
IE.)
So thanks Robert for all your help in the past, but this response isn't helpful.
Microsoft, are you listening? Fix your browser.

• Script servers update and restart

i would like to automate install updates and restart for the servers on scheduled time (or initiate manually for all/groups) that are on GPO option 3 (download updates but let me install).
I found couple of discussions from year 2010 and there is a success after many suggestions. But it is a bit time consuming to follow all this. So, may there is a definite step by step guide.
Thanks
"When you hit a wrong note it's the next note that makes it good or bad". Miles Davis

I am talking about the servers that will not cause any disruption.
1. All servers are on option GPO option 3 (download updates only).
2. In my case I talk about 15 hyper-v hosts with 2 VMs each (DC and Print server).
So I know that any time Saturday, Sunday or any night time will not cause any problem.
So instead of login to 15 HV hosts and then to 2 VMs on each for launching Windows update and restart I guess it is a valid option to run a script and get notification. The servers are generally HEALTHY so even in case of some error or non restart I can
manage it after getting a notification.
I believe people using this scenario.
