WindowServer port death causes instant logout
Hi, I've just had my computer instant-logout twice now. Poking around, it seems to be a problem that's been noted on these forums before, the WindowServer crashing. Both times, the event happened when I was on YouTube; it does not happen consistently.
Any idea how to fix it? Has Apple said anything about this problem?
Incidentally, while the Console log claims that a crash report was written to the /DiagnosticReports folder, the folder is presently empty.
Thank you for your help.

Same problem here. Happened to me a handful of times when I tried waking up my MBP's screensaver after only ~half hour of inactivity. When I try to wake it up, I should get a prompt to authenticate to unlock, but instead the MBP struggles for a moment, and instead of giving me a username/password box, I get kicked over to the log in screen. Digging in the Console log shows many listings for "HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death", one each for what looks like each of the applications that were open prior to the crash/logout.

Ok, there are several people that have this problem it seems. I can't figure it out. It's the WindowServer, but why? Here are some points:
- usually (always?) happens when I have my Dell 24" LCD hooked up
- usually (always?) happens when I'm running iMovie or Aperture. iMovie really angers it
- it's a 2.2 Santa Rosa MBP, mid 2007
- motherboard has been replaced twice, and it still has the same issue
- the RAM is new
- this happend in 10.5 too
- can happen while working in a program
- it can happen when I return to the computer and move the mouse- the screen saver stops, then it crashes (blue screen), and goes to the main login screen, besides the user login screen
I'd guess the graphics chip is being pushed too hard. Or I have something installed that is not jiving with dual monitors/imovie or the screen saver.
Two console dumps are included- First is the WindowServer log, second is the Console Message. This crash is from me returning to the computer and waking it from it's screen saver. The code is long, of course.

Seems that it's mostly this graphics chip. -
Iphone 3GS update went wrong - plugging in via USB causes instant PC crash
I have (had) an iPhone 3GS, working well. I decided it was time to do a sync, and an update was suggested. A back up seems to have been created from the sync (visible in itunes), however there were messages afterwards that my PC had recovered from a serious error. The update became a restore and update, and I was given the choice to restore to my backup. This process appeared to go well enough, though at the end my PC kept crashing and trying to reboot but as long as my iPhone was connected via USB the PC could not reboot.
Furthermore, a whole stack of info from my iPhone (all texts, all notes, around 600 out of 800 photos, settings, apps etc) has disappeared.
Now every time I try to connect my iPhone to my PC it instantly crashes. Other things (eg headphones) still work in the same USB ports (I've tried multiple, front & back).
I can see an itunes backup was created, but cannot connect to itunes on my PC to ascertain if there is any more data from the back up (namely my notes & photos). Any suggestions from similar experiences would be most welcome!Success.
After a bit of a dig around google searches, it seems there's some sort of glitch between Apple and Logitech webcam device drivers.
I removed the Logitech drivers, and voila! iPhone no longer causes instant meltdown of pc.
My question now then, how do I work out if my incomplete restore can be turned into a complete restore? I was game enough to hit the restore button in itunes and it only gave me the option of returning to original settings, thus erasing what is currently on there. I cancelled that move!
I would like what I have (all contacts, at least!) plus the disappeared old stuff (pics, notes, texts would be nice)...
Am i right in understanding that iTunes will only keep one backup and any subsequent ones will replace the previous one? I'm nervous that if I backup what i have there now, it will replace a good backup that I really might be able to restore in full.
Any thoughts on this? -
On the 652X, is there a way to know which port/line caused the change detection w/o checking each individual line? This question relates to creating an interrupt handler when there are many events that cause an interrupt.
No. Read the User Manual, CH4, Change Notification.

Received notification of WindowServer event port death.
I've read different explanations on why this happened, the best being
"SIGSEGV is a segmentation violation signal, usually caused by an attempt to access memory at an address not available to the process' thread. Common instances are dereferencing a NULL pointer value (0x0), or an address in low memory (in the range 0x0 to 0xFFFC), or an address way outside the physical or virtual memory address range (say, 0xFFFFFFFC).
Had the pointer been an odd address, or pointed to a location not properly aligned for the data type (e.g., 32-bit data access not on a longword boundary), then a SIGBUS (bus alignment error) would have been raised on a processor that didn't allow nonaligned memory accesses.
SIGSEGV usually indicates that a data structure containing pointer data has been overwritten by another thread or process; the crashing thread blithely picked up what it thought was a valid pointer and tried to use it.
Without access to the source code for the WindowServer, it will be difficult to guess where the error occurred."

But the question I have is, why does'nt the OS sent a crash report to Apple after the reboot like it does when the OS crashes for any other reason?Conker He wrote:
2/5/11 10:24:13 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[65]) Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
The WindowServer process (manages application windows and launches new applications) crashed; a +Segmentation Fault+ means it tried to access memory it shouldn't. Just why, only a developer could tell you.
I'd start by Verifying the file system on your internal HD, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that's ok see if a [Safe Boot|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/21245.html] will help; it uses less of the graphics than normal.
If still no help, it might be a hardware problem. Try running this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509]. Run the Extended tests. -
Convert to AAC causes instant crash
All of a sudden I can't use the Convert to AAC command to import songs, or even convert imported songs from AIFF. Every time I select a song, whether from a CD or from files copied to the iTunes Library as AIFF files, and select the Convert to AAC option from the menu, it instantly causes iTunes to crash and disappear. I've been importing songs this way for years. And converting all my music from enormous AIFF files to aac format this way. Suddenly I can't.
What's going on? What do I have to do to get this function back? Is there a preference file I need to throw away, or should I completely re-install iTunes?
Mac G4, Tiger OS X 10.4.10
iTunes 6.0.4
nullThanks for the quick reply. I tried trashing those two files, but it didn't fix it. The same thing is still happening. What could possibly be wrong? Could the external drive the files are saved to have become corrupt in some way? Existing songs still play, and I can copy files to it manually. It's just the convert to AAC function that seems to be haywire, at this point.
For what it's worth, the crash report is below:

ITouch not recognized on any PC anymore - Defect USB port the cause?
Hey guys,
I'm posting here because I've been to the closest Genius Bar twice and they couldn't even tell me what was my problem. I'm kinda desperate right now...
The same problem occurred on my three iPod Touch first gen so far; for some reason they simply stop being recognized by ANY computers. I try different cables, reset, recovery mode, reinstall iTunes, restart the AMDS, update every hardware drivers of my PC... The only thing I haven't done right now is reformatting my PC, which won't happen.
I went to the Apple's Genius Bar and they couldn't find my problem; it wasn't the pins, the cable nor an application problem (I have latest firmware 2.1 by the way). So they gave me another Touch which was also defect. Yesterday, I return and they gave me a third one which worked correctly at the store and on my job's computer.
However, when I got back home I connect it on my own PC (using the same cable et setup) and for some reason, now the same problem reappeared. Doesn't matter what I try, it is not recognized anywhere anymore. When I connect it to a PC, the recharge window never shows; it continue working normally though.
As I said, I updated every hardware drivers and I'm a little tired of going to the store everyday. Could it be caused by a defect USB port? Anyone ever seen something like this?
Some help would be really appreciate.
Thanks for your time and support.
FrankI been having the same problem as you, except I haven't tried it in a different computer. For a while, iTunes is recognizing my iTouch as a digital canon camera. Now its not recognizing it as anything.
This problem started started when I downloaded the iTouch 2.0.2 update. When iTunes is open it asked me to update. When I click yes to update the iTunes, it only updates the safari and it won't update the iTunes. Apple support by phone was not able to help me fix this problem. The tech said that the USB port hardware needs to be updated on my computer. It took me almost 5 hours to find out this could be the solution to my problem.
Now, I'm trying to find the USB update thru Microsoft and I'm having difficult time finding this too. I had this iTouch for only 3 months and cost me almost $400 and I'm not able to use it. I have at least 14GB available in this iTouch and I don't know If I will be able to use all this space, it I dont find the solution to this problem.
If you find the solution to this problem, PLEASE reply to this post. If anyone else reading this, your answers are welcome and appreciated. If I cant find a solution to this problem, I will never buy an Apple product again. -
White Screen of death caused during update of IOS 8.3
My Girlfriend was updating her iPhone 5 to iOS 8.3, A message came in during and she clicked on it. This in turn caused the phone to with to the white screen of death with the apple logo and upload bar paused. We've tried the usual hard re-set, also plugged into iTunes for a factory restore but then it asks for you to click allow on the phone. We can't do this because we can't see anything other than the apple logo.
Every now and then the screen flashes and shows you the home page. and using siri we managed to make a call.
Any help or advise would be great.
Very strange
Thanks
JamieDId she bother reading the message that appeared?
That is not a "White Screen of death". That is the reboot screen which the phone does while updating. You should have left it alone. Put the phone in Recovery mode and Restore it in iTunes. -
IE HTTP close (reset) - port reuse causing firewall issues
Having an issue with some systems reusing the same TCP port number between sessions, causing the firewall to drop the connection.
Internet Explorer is creating the HTTP socket connection to port 80. An ephemeral port (assigned by Windows) is bound to the local side of the connection. The first connection goes through just fine. The socket is
closed/reset. However, the very next connection (hundreds of milliseconds later), is using the same ephemeral port, causing the firewall to discard the connection.
I have tried setting TcpTimedWaitDelay in the registry but that did not help. Since the socket is being reset, it never goes into the TIME_WAIT state.
Any suggestions? This does not happen consistently - on the order of 10s of times per day.
Thanks!Problem is still occurring. Customer has built a new client system with MS-only software (no virus protection, etc.). Upgraded this system to IE9. Problem is still occurring. Tried disabling NativeXMLHTTP option but no difference.
Here is the ASP VBScript code that causes the error to appear:
function SubmitPost(data,ErrHow)
var d = new Date();
return SendData('POST','TDMaster.asp?InstID=' + document.getElementById("tdInstance").value + '&UID=' + d.getTime(),data,ErrHow,0);
//Returns valid version of MSXML

var progIDs = ['Msxml2.XMLHTTP.6.0','Microsoft.XMLHTTP'];
for (var i = 0; i < progIDs.length; i++) {
try {
var http = new ActiveXObject(progIDs[i]);
return http;
catch (ex) {
return null;
// Function that actually sends the data and returns the response
// Format 0 = XML
// Format 1 = Binary
var http;
var timedOut;
function SendData(method,url,data,ErrHow,Format)
http = GetMSXML() ;
var ResultXML;
var e;
http.open(method, url, false);
http.setRequestHeader("Content-Type","application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
http.setRequestHeader("Content-Length", data.length);
try {
http.send(data);
if(Format == 0) {
return http.responseText;
} else {
return http.responseBody;
} catch(e) {

Inserting music cd when itunes is open causes instant reboot
When itunes is open and I insert a music cd with .cda files on it the computer instantly reboots. It reads and plays back the files fine on other players, but obviously this is no helpful if I want to import into the itunes library.
I found some posts with similar problems but no solutions posted. Any ideas? Please let me know if I can supply some more info to help find the solution.
BTW I upgraded the itunes today, but problem remains.

Clicking on Background Tasks causes instant crash
I posted earlier about my 2010 Mac Pro and in FCPX 10.0.6 if I click on the Background Task (just to left of time counter / timecode) I get an instant blue-screen for less than a half of a second and then I'm back to my desktop! It's instantaneous!
When it happened I was inporting 1080p24 from my CF reader and I had asked checked "Optimize Media" so I wanted to check in and see the progress of the 5DmkII HD footage being encoded to Apple ProRes, but the crash was so fast - like catching the downhill edge on a snowboard... anyway, now when I boot up my Mac Pro, also a new issue - possibly related?!?! - the fan is running louder than ever before - I think it is running wide opne full-blast!
What is happening to my faithful Mac Pro? What is happeneing to FCPX??
FCPX 10.0.6
MacPro5,1 (2010 2.8GHz Quad Core)
OSX 10.6.8 (I'm on Lion because I need to keep FCP7 on for legacy freelance projects).
8GB 1066MHz RAM
note: I've been stable for a long time now, and haven't loaded anything new including the most recent FCPX update tyhat came out last week; 10.0.7
Please help.
Thanks,
StephenHello mrcart,
i think it is unlikely that firefox itself is causing an operating system crash, i had some time back an similar issue where a system of a friend of mine was crashing while using IE - thats the only app he used ... the system in his case had faulty ram, and i suspect you are facing some sort of hardware problem or faulty device driver.
Please read this (also lists steps what you can do):
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc957625.aspx
(personally) I would suggest you start by checking your ram, you can do this in two ways:
Search in your Windows 7 Start Menu for "ram", you should find something like "Diagnose your computer´s memory problems"
... Or, you use the memtest86+ tool from here (e.g. download the iso, burn it and boot from the cd):
http://www.memtest.org/
Check your eventlog for errors (e.g. disk errors, timeouts, etc).
If you cannot track the problem down (i would suspect a hardware problem or faulty device driver ... e.g. it could be your video card driver doing something wrong) you should seek help at your computer manufacturer, an experienced friend, or using some forum.
kind regards,
John Kirk. -
Certain Flash videos cause instant BSOD.
When surfing every now and then a Flash video will cause an instant BSOD. I suspect this is related to hardware acceleration, but haven't found a common link as it's not directly related to resolution or window size. I'm on a PC that should have no problem handling several graphics intensive windows at once and I would really like to be able to use hardware acceleration to take advantage of the system as much as possible. Going to try disabling hardware acceleration for now, but any other tips would be appreciated.
This sounds like a Flash plugin problem, i.e. not really a Firefox problem. Out of curiosity, does this happen in Internet Explorer as well when playing similar videos?

USB/Firewire port system causing sleepless monitor, lockups
After long last, I finally have figured out why my monitor will not stay sleeping - after unplugging both the USB as well as the Firewire connections from my MacPro, all was well. (Previously, the monitor would only sleep for about 10 seconds, and come back on, or simply lock up the computer all together.) Unfortunately, this means that I can no longer adjust my monitor brightness with the F14 and F15 keys - but, oh well.
Any ideas? Will my monitor require a trip to the Genius Bar? If so, would the cost be prohibitive?
Thanks all in advance!
DavidHere is my recommendation on shopping list and brief tutorial.
Try setting up a couple new hard drives.
Pull the old one for now at least.
Drive #1 main system
Drive #2 600GB backup, 35GB emergency system
Drive #3 data, media files and libraries
Drive #4 scratch if needed, and TimeMachine
Buy SuperDuper or use Carbon Copy 3.3
Buy Alsoft Disk Warrior or another top utility for disk and system maintenance and repairs.
Your current hard drive is corrupt to the point you can't boot from anything or do anything. So the directory and catalogue and probably journal file are "shot" and can't repair itself. May also have bad sectors.
USB modems I know don't work well if at all in Mac OS.
USB cables can cause shorts or electrical anomalies, more often seen as a kernel panic
Instead of the monitor, why not direct USB port? or off your PCIe USB card that it sounds like you added?
When things are "normal" is when you want to make a backup image and keep it for safe keeping.
An actual disk image; a volume image or clone.
A "working" backup with the latest changes.
An emergency system partition that you never use except for maintenance (make a backup image of it too for safety)
Run Disk Warrior etc on a regular basis before there is trouble as preventative maintenance
The Sprint USB broadband replacement I'll leave for someone else that knows what works that you can install.

DW6, basic refresh causes instant crash
Hello, I have recently installed the creative cloud. Everything appeared to install correctly at first glance.
Some apps such as photoshop, indesign, dreamweaver seem to be opening previously made files no problem. But, I can reproduce an appcrash of dreamweaver CS6 every single time I hit the refresh button after making a change to the code on a number of files in a certain section of our website that includes javascript/jquery galleries in them. I have opened many files now and can reproduce this crash on every file with these galleries and content sliders from one site we are making. I have both .shtml and .html versions of these pages and either one with the jquery galleries are crashing as soon as I make any code or text changes and try to hit refresh.
I run windows7 64bit. I have the CS5 Master suite installed from previous. I can't remove cs5 until I know cs6 is indeed working. Right now I'm not able to save changes to a large number of files in dreamweaver. So hopefully I don't need to uninstall CS5 just to test. It appears to maybe be something with the extra javascript content slider/galleries on the page conflicting with dreamweaver during refresh or save.
Any help would be appreciated.

----------------------------------possibly unrelated issue-------------------------
Also noticed during this time, first day of CS6 use attempts, I am having licensing issues requiring repeated sign ins at application load.
Presenting notice that my trial period was over and that I need to license the product. I click the button for licensing it using my adobe ID and it works. But this has happened now maybe 8 times today already during these crash and restart attempts.
Activated! at least until I try to fire it up again. I don't know if this licensing thing has anything at all to do with the crashes mentioned previously. They seem unrelated since I have no trouble refreshing code or saving files in CS6 on files without the jquery slider/galleries.Thanks Nancy. I'll try disabling the live view javascript and external files loading and report back.
The site does have external files and does have use javascript and jquery. My extensions are already turned off.
On the activation side, I just got done speaking with adobe support about that and they shared my screen and fixed some permission settings on a specific adobe system folder that was installed new with CS6. I'm hoping that holds this time. Seems to be so far.
Otherwise, they took a quick look at my web pages crashing (the ones with and without javascript/jquery) and I showed how a single letter change of anything in code view and hitting refresh would crash the file immediately. At first she said it was because I was using shtml files. But the fact is the same crash occurs on our copy of the site that is only .html, without server side includes, proves that wrong. I showed her that as well. Next she figured it was the jquery on those pages.
A supervisor came on the line to help further, supposedly. She is the one that got the activation working. But she also basically just told me that they don't support any jquery whatsoever as it is a third party piece of sofware. Ok fine. But we were able to build this site with CS5 dreamweaver with no issues a month ago. The only issue working with CS5 is that you couldn't expect it to live preview the site consistently and was often slow on preview loading those external files and whatnot. Never crashes to desktop, and certainly not for changing a single character in the code and saving or refreshing. I can reproduce this error with this site on standard html 5 .html files and the .shtml files alike. Any page that has our content gallery slider in it. Crash on hitting the refresh button.
To me it's something with CS6 handling jquery. This site validated with no errors last friday. One warning on CSS that was more of a suggestion. Sadly, our biggest reason for upgrading was for the "enhanced jquery" features. But now I'm thinking that in their sales literature that their enhanced mobile jquery support just means support for their proprietary new jquery mobile modules they have created, and actually may crash on a lot of other sites people already had third party jquery in. We are using almost the very newest standard jquery library. I think there is one newer now, with some standard slider/gallery javascript functions and a couple custom scripts. This just saddens my heart a bit to upgrade and find out about these crashes. I was certainly hoping for CS6 to be more accepting of newer web tech, not less. The woman simply repeated that dreamweaver does not support jquery. And yet their main page for DW6 says this:
"jQuery Mobile support
Add advanced interactivity with jQuery code hinting. jQuery makes it simple to add interactivity to web pages."
Is this the kind of sales tricks that occured when they supposedly started supporting "layers" and "divs" but in reality it was only supportying a thing called APdiv and APlayers.?
To top off the enjoyment of my phone support call so far, the supervisor hung up on me when I was asking if there was anyone to submit my html files to for possible future dreamweaver udpate teams to review, in case this was just something goofy causing this. Since it only happens when trying to hit the refresh button. She repeated one last time that only higher level support would look at files and that would cost me over $200 in support fees. I asked if the forums or some dev site would be a good place to start looking into a solution. She hung up.
Again, thanks for the tips Nancy. I will try disabling some of those view options... Anything to stop the dreaded CTDs. But one of the major features in CS5 was the ability to be connected to your external files, search through the list of them, open some of them in code view, et al. Is this a step backwards, or basically a workaround for brand new software already. I suppose. I hope this workaround of disabling features works for now otherwise DW6 is getting shelved until further notice. I suppose I have 30 days to request my money back.
I hope I don't find these issues in other pieces of cs6 cloud. I had already had an issue working with old cs5 photoshop files in cs6 trial. Please let these be the only two issues to crop up. This cloud subscription idea is great, some of the new software features are great. But not if I have to recreate everything. -
Gray screen of death-cause?
Can anyone read this crash report and tell me what might be the issue? First time it happened to my MB Air 2011 maxed out, on latest lion.
Thanks in advance!
