Wireless router/Print Server w/ Ethernet Xbox 360

Hey yall,
So I'm on day 2 of my new life as a "Mac guy". Threw down on a G5 and am pretty stoked. Still stock - I'm going to get another GB of RAM and AppleCare soon - and I'm also looking to get everything running wirelessly, including my HP PSC 1510 printer. I currently have Qwest DSL (1.5MB down), which I have configured wirelessly but don't have the router to print wirelessly. I have a 1-bdrm cabin w/ a loft, so I'd like to have the router/printer upstairs and just this pimp machine downstairs for all to see. I also have a Xbox 360 upstairs that I'd like to be able to connect via Ethernet to the router. The Airport Extreme BS would work - but it's 2 bills. Would this US Robotics Router w/ Print Server work?
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=overview&sku=A0474 840&c=us&l=en&cs=19
I'd want to be able to return my rented router to Qwest - would this be one-stop shopping for me? Run internet/print service to the G5 downstairs and hardwire in my 360 upstairs? If so, that would be sweet. Also, the router says any USB printer would work - is that true? The HP PSC 1510 ain't exactly high-end - but I've also not opened it yet and would return it to get something that would work. Thanks a lot for any help, this fruity computer is pretty sweet!!

iMac G5 2.1 GHz w/ iSight

Hello,
Congratulations on your new Mac! My setup is similar to your own. I have my computer (iMac G5) hooked up wirelessly and I provide internet to my PS2 from the LAN hookup on the router.
I'm sorry that I can't give you an answer to the usefulness of the US Robotics router but, I can give you my experience with an Airport Express Base Station. I was fortunate enough to get one as a gift for Christmas and have been up and running ever since. ^^
First and foremost the Airport Express Base Station or AEX is Apple made and quite frankly works the best with your computer. You can plug your printer into it and also share your internet with your XBox 360 through the Ethernet port.
Though not as expensive as the Airport Extreme Base Station it is still about twice as expensive as the US Robotics one you labeled in your post. That is my setup in a nutshell except I don't have the XBox 360. ;p (jealous)
I just wanted to provide you a tested and tried solution that works. Good luck and wish you the best with your new setup. I know you are going to enjoy it and I agree about showing off your iMac, they are sweet looking.
Best Regards,
Jason

  • Any suggestions for an all-in-one "cable modem router print server" (N)

any suggestions for an all-in-one "cable modem router print server" (N)?

If that's a problem with your cable company, change the company.
If your cable company is not able to provide you with a cable modem which gets you full performance for their service why would you bother with that company or try to make it better than them?
If you subscribe to a 100 Mbit/s service they must be able to provide you with a modem that does 100 Mbit/s and be able to demonstrate you 100 Mbit/s on your cable.
If they are unable to provide you with a modem which does 100 Mbit/s and thus cannot demonstrate that the service they have installed in fact can do 100 Mbit/s but only give you a 50 Mbit/s because that's the best they have, why bother buying yourself a better modem to find out whether or not their service does what it promises or not??
In addition, an integrated device won't get you better performance. On the contrary, consumer devices are generally single CPU (and core) devices. It's usually running some Linux or similar. If a single process gets overloaded it can drag down the performance of the whole device. For instance, let's say there is a bug in the print server software of the router. You print something and it hangs and the print server process on the router runs wild. Now the CPU is fully loaded and the routing performance will go down. If there is a bug in the routing software it will bring down the whole device and you can't even print.
You'll get the best performance if you use dedicated devices because then one device cannot overload another. Get a modem. Get a wireless ethernet router. Get a printer with integrated print server. That's far better.

  • What's the difference between HP Wireless G Print Server and HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit?

    Hello!!
What’s the difference between HP Wireless G Print Server and HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit?
I found two things as follows.
    1. MAC support
    2. USB dongle
    Is there anything else?

    Now I’m clear!!
But there are descriptions for each on your home page over view tab. Due to this forum restriction; I cannot put the URL here.
They say for each as follows.
HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit --- Retain full all-in-one wireless functionality: print, fax from your PC, scan, and access photo memory cards access and PC status
HP Wireless G Print Server --- Get the same functionality with your all-in-one: printing, scanning, photo memory card access, PC faxing, and printer statusSo I got confusion, that’s why I did not get the difference for them.
And I found wrong description on your HP support document page. I recommend that you correct it, because it put consumer into confusion and break to buy this product.
The title is “HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit - Setting up the HP Printer with the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit in Windows .”
The wrong description is “NOTE:  You must turn on the computer with the computer adapter in order to print to the wireless product” at last line of “Step two: Configure other computers to use the printer. “
    You can erase this line!!

  • HP 2101nw Wireless G Print Server & Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)

    Hi everyone,
Before I start, I must point out that I have a Win 7 laptop connected to the HP Photosmart C5280 with the HP 2101nw Wireless G Print Server perfectly.
Appears that Snow Leopard is not compatible with ths device. The Hp Connection Manager 'sees' the printer, but I am not able to connect to it.
The drivers on the CD and online mention that it will work woth 10.4 and 10.5, but no mention of 10.6 (I am on 10.6.5). However, installing it from the .dmg file on the drivers page, I get The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/HPVUSBFamily.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
Just wondering if anyone from HP can confirm this is a driver being worked on, or is this device 'obsolete'?
    Regards,
    Stephen

Same problem here. New imac with Snow Leopard (10.6.6). Previously working with 10.5 on MacBook Pro.
As for 'Shogan' above - The Hp Connection Manager 'sees' the printer, but I am not able to connect to it.
I reinstalled software/drivers from the .dmg file on the HP support page, I get The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/HPVUSBFamily.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.
I can select the printer from the Connection manager list but the printer remains 'offline' and the 'Status: Idle'
Come on customer support.....give these customers some....well, support.

  • Issues configuring a router print server

I have an ASUS RT-N13U router that I'm hoping to be able to print off of (printer - Canon i560).  I've set it up with a Windows computer and it works as expected, but I cannot get it to work on my Mac.  I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong.  In order to get it to work on my Windows computer, I used 192.168.1.1 and LPRServer and chose my specific printer (Canon i560), so I used the same parameters on my Mac.  I followed these steps: https://discussions.apple.com/message/8749886#8749886.
Once I set my printer up, I get the following message "Unable to verify the printer on your network.    It can not be currently determined if ‘192.168.1.1’ supports the Line Printer Daemon (protocol). Would you still like to create the queue?".  I choose to 'continue', but when I try to print the printer just says "The printer is busy."
I've been able to print off of USB for years, but I'd really like to be able to print wirelessly.
Your help is much appreciated, thank you!
    - redrainbows

LPD/LPR print queues often require a specific queue name. If this is not entered when creating the LPD queue on the Mac then you can get the "printer is busy" message.
Since you have the Windows computer working fine then I suggest you check the print queue on Windows for information on what queue name or protocol to use. This can be determined by opening the Properties pane for the printer and selecting the Ports tab. If you then select the Configure Ports tab this will show what protocol you are using. By default, Windows will default to RAW Port 9100, which is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on the Mac. So if Windows is using this protocol for connecting via the Asus router then delete the current queue on the Mac and add it again, this time selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol. If Windows is showing the queue has been configured using LPD, then it should also show what queue name has been used which you can the use to create a new LPD queue on the Mac.
One other note. The Canon Mac drivers cannot be used for some networked printer connections, such as when the printer is being shared by Windows or connected to a 3rd party print server. Instead you need to install and use the Gutenprint drivers. So you may need to look at using the Gutenprint i560 driver for your setup.

  • WRT610N 5ghz xbox 360 wireless N adapter won't connect (xbox 360 "Wireless Mode = Not connected")

    Hi folks,
Looks like some other folks have reported similar. Haven't seen if an answer has been found anywhere.
    WRT610v2 running latest firmware.
xbox 360 sees both the 2.4 network (ssid = network1) and the 5.0 network (ssid network2) when it does its scan.
Initially, xbox showed network strength for 2.4 network at 3 out of 4 bars and 5.0 network at 1 out of 4 bars.
Connects to 2.4 network just fine
Won't pull an ip address and reports "Not connected" when I select the 5.0 network.
I tweaked the wireless settings per some suggestions I found in this forum and now it shows the 5.0 network at 4 out of 4 bars signal strength. Also turned security on and off and xbox 360 reported the changes in security on the 5.0 network.
So the xbox 360 is definitely seening the 5.0 network. and can tell if it is running WPA2 or not.
If it can see the 5.0 network and recognizes what security and network type (infrastructure) is set, would would stop it from connecting to the WRT610n router and getting an IP address? No mac filters or firewalls are set and, again, connects just fine and gets an ip address if I select the 2.4 (network1 ssid) instead.
Won't work if I manually set IP, subnet, gateway, dns either.
Have tried mixed versus dedicated on the N radio...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    thanks!
    rjb

    Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. Tried as you suggested but still no luck. Seems to see the 5ghz ssid just fine with plenty of strength but just will not pull an ip address or even connect if I manually assign.
    Any other thoughts?
thanks again for taking the time to respond.

  • Connection problems after installing wireless router: frequent "Server not found"

I recently got a Linksys wireless router but since then, a lot of webpages show "server not found" frequently. I can eventually open these if I keep refreshing the page or come back to it later. This only happens to my desktop PC connected by a cable but never happens to our 3 laptops with wireless connection. The LAN cable changed but problem persists. Desktop PC swapped but problem still persists. Is this simply a defective router?

What is the model no of the router...?
Try changing the MTU size to 1350 on the router and power cycle the router and check..

  • Router Print Server Compatibility

I'm looking for a router that costs less than the Airport Express. I'm looking for a router that has a USB Print function that is compatible with OSX 10.8.5
I was looking at the AirStation™ HighPower N600 Gigabit, but their user manual only covers to 10.7 so I called them and they couldn't give me a good answer other than that many routers have been having print server problems with 10.8 of Mac. Anyone have a Router w/ USB Print capability that works with OSX 10.8.5?

Usualy, anything working with 10.7 works with 10.8.
The reason the Airport Extreme/express work so conveniently is because there is proprietary software embedded that makes the USB port an extension of your Mac's USB. This is valuable for non-postscript, USB-only printers (mostly inkjets fit this description). When I say USB-only, I mean that, except for Brother, all the manufacturers have decided to give us USB-only drivers.
For any brand of router to give you that, it will need software that traps USB output and sends it to the router/printer.
Depending on your printer, we may have alternate drivers that can work with "standard" network printing protocols. What printer is it?

  • TM wireless routing from iMac via Ethernet cable

I'm in Spain and have a wireless router from my ISP.  I have my iMac connected over wifi to the router.  I now have a 4th gen Time Machine that I am connecting directly to my iMac via an ethernet cable.
What I'm trying to do is to use the Time Machine to create a new wifi network while connected to my iMac by the ethernet cable.  Main reason is, I'm Spain and connect to a VPN so it appears as if I'm in the US for US television and a few other services (US citizen residing abroad).  I want to be able to sign into the VPN on my iMac and have this signal (and IP) broadcast over the wifi network I create.
I was able to finally setup a new wireless network with the Time Machine, but as soon as I login to the VPN, the Time Machine signal drops.  Is there a way to use the Time Machine as a throughput wifi device for the signal sent over the ethernet cable between the iMac and Time Machine?  It appears that the change in IP address when signing into the VPN is what may be causing the problem.  Is there a way to fix this or circumvent it?
    Thanks!

The box is a Time Capsule. Time Machine is the backup software on a Mac and only on a Mac.
Is the vpn a software version on the iMac?
Generally using a vpn and linking it via the computer to another router is particularly messy.
You are much better buying a cheap router that will do vpn with 3rd party firmware. Most vpn services recommend this kind of setup. I think you will do much better following their recommendations. Simply connect the iMac behind the vpn router when you want access to material from US.
TC do not have built in vpn and are difficult to setup for anything more than most basic functions.
I am not sure you can do ICS (internet connection sharing) from a vpn connection to the TC.. without a lot of manual routing rules.
Do a google.. there are several sites with info. Search for mac internet connection sharing vpn
In the end.. get a cheap router and use openvpn.

  • HP Wireless G Print Server not detected during installation.

I follow the instructions, insert install disk, click install, agree to all the terms, then the software searches for wireless devices, then it prompts me to connect the print server to the computer by connecting the install usb cable provided and then connect the power. I do this and software does not recognize the print server, so I can't click next. What do I need to do?

  • SMC Router/Print Server & Airport iBook unable to Print

Was able to print when networked to a desktop PC, now "location unknown" when add new IP printer. Tried adding router IP address, DNS address etc Nothing is working. I have to go back to hard wiring w/ USB to print. Connects to internet without a problem. What gives?

    Hi.
I have never done any IP printing myself, but know a few things about networks. To begin with, how are you set up? Are you using a hub, a router switch? It does not sound like you have a print server. What printer are you using? The details do matter.

  • Communication Error with wireless router, Works fine with Ethernet cable.

Video iChat is fine when my MBP and other MB's and MBP's are at my house using the Netgear 240 rangemax wireless router. I'm currently running High speed Internet via cable modem through Time Warner Cable. When I try to chat with them while they are at home, I get a communication error. I then tried to use the Ethernet cable hooked up to the cable modem to my MacBook Pro. It worked fine. I would like to use video iChat via my wireless router. I don't understand why it is not working. I think it is my router. Do I need to buy an Airport Extreme Base Station or can I still use this router. Can you possibly help me configure this Netgear router? The internet connection is fine when I use the wireless router.
    MBP 15" C2D 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Cable Modem, Netgear RangeMax 240 WPNT834 wireless router

I have not had very good experiences with the Netgear routers. I can't say that it is the router causing your problem, however, it might be the effective wireless bandwidth over your router. Do a speedcheck and determine the download and upload speed with wireless. Hopefully you're getting about 400Kbps up and 400Kbps down or about 1000Kbps in total.

  • Cisco Linksys EA6500 Smart Wi-Fi Router AC1750 (STRICT NAT TYPE XBOX 360)

    Hi All,
I have 2 kids. Each with his/her own xbox. One Xbox gets an open NAT Type OPEN and the 2nd Xbox gets a STRICT NAT type. I had the same issue with the other Cisco router I had, but thought an upgrade might fix the problem. Plugged up new router last night, same dang issue. Why can't 2 Xbox gaming systems have an open NAT type at once with these routers? Anyone have any suggestions, I am all ears.
Ready to try another router (Netgear, D-Link)
    Thanks

If I am not mistaken, theoritically one router is only applicable with one xbox. The reason for that is because you need to use or open ports on your router and you can only use one port for one ip address. What you can try though is to leave the working xbox the way it was setup and then set DMZ on your router using either the 2nd xbox's ip address or mac address.

  • Photosmart D5160 connected to Router (Printer Server Feature), properties ignored

    Hi everyone,
I'm here to describe my problem.
I have the printer Phothosmart D5160 connected via usb cable to usb port of my router (Proprietary Router of Telecom Italy) for using it in among my home network PCs and laptops.
The problem is that, printing in Windows 7, if I set some properties for the printer (for example Low Quality Print or Manual back and front printing), even if the dialog windows correctly reports the options set, when printing the printer ignores everything.
    How can I solve this?

    Hi TiD91
I understand the printer is connected to the router by a USB cable and will print except when changing the printer properties.
The issue you are having would be bidirectional communication.
Go to start, devices and printers, right click the printer, left click printer properties, click on the ports tab.
Make sure Enable bidirectional support is checked.
Connecting a USB cable to a router may or may not work and can be intermediate.
This printer's connectivity is USB and Bluetooth capable by using the wireless printer adapter.
The USB connection was intended for a direct connection to the computer.
Here is a document for setting up Bluetooth.
    Hope this helps.
