Wireless security-peripherals

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me. I have had many issues with with my wireless network and changed from PC to MAC which I was told were very secure. However I can't help but think that I am having similiar issues.
I find that many of the website pages I open look 'put together' or fake like I have been redirected to another website.
I am unable to downlaod security updates.
There are about 60 ports open on my router
there are 3 different users for my printer.
There are folders on my HD that I am not authorised to open,
I know that this may sound like I am paranoid but I had my bank account hacked with PC's and money taken-all returned by the bank.
I have very limited knowledge but it seems like someone is getting access through my printer-which is wireless and then my MAC.
Any ideas please?

I guess so, but because my bank accounts have been hacked through my laptop using WIFI it's hard not to get paranoid.
Honestly there are many occassions that it's like someone is remotely using my laptop, files go missing or are just turned into images, I can't back up, etc.
I have been dealing with this for nearly a year and bought all MAC's, phones, Ipads, laptops etc. and although the issues aren't as prevelant, but they still exist.
Everyone I speak to in the MAC community tells me this can't be the case, bit I have had the laptop I am working on 're-booted' by MAC twice in 8 months.
I would be interested to hear from anyone that could recommend a forensic IT specialist or similiar so I can get to the bottom of this.
I have spent so much money on IT etc. in the last 2 years plus I am interested in seeing what is going on.

Wireless Security Problem (PC Laptop)

Thank you for your reply and assistance. I was able to resolve this issue by updating my wireless adaptor driver. I found another user on my laptop's support website that had the same issue. I'm FINALLY... utilizing my wireless internet .

Problem with wireless secured network in hotels

Hello,
I'm a cabin crew member and I travel around the world almost every week. Since the update ios 6.0, my Iphone 4 16 GB doesn't connect automatically on the wireless secured network of hotels, while it worked before the update in the same hotels. My Iphone still connects automatically on my own home network, but I must ask every time to the help desk of hotels for manually connecting, by registering my mac adress on the router. Problems in Japan (Tokyo), USA (New-York, Washington, LA) and Senegal (Dakar). I'm really upset and Apple seems not concerned. Please help me.

I'm not so familiar with Linux, though've installed and dealed with some distrs, but as far as i know they're mostly compatible with each other.
So, check this forum (though it's Ubuntu) and try to find solution there, if no one here helps.
Also there's a member here called wyth, which helped some Ubuntu-users, which was great. Try PM him if no help here or on that forum.

Connecting laptop to WRT350N and wireless security

Hi, I have the following problem. I need to connect a laptop to WRT350N router. Everything works OK if I do NOT use wireless security. If I use PSK (WAP) then at the Preferred Network screen I set the settings to WAP/PSK and enter the shared key. However, this setting is overruled again and again. I can not save it. If I select my network from the networklist, many times the laptop doesn't even ask for the shared key. And if it does then it acts as if I have installed WEP on the router (which isn't the case!). I use Windows XP Home. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to solve it? Many thank, JFX

I have a second laptop connected to the router which works ok with both the non-secured and the WAP/PSK-secured environment. The one that is not working is a Sony Vaio with LAN-express AS 802.111g card for which I have the latest driver installed. Unable to change wireless security settings on WRT54GS v5.1

I'm using a WRT54GS v.5.1 with the latest firmware (v1.50.9).
Set this up this weekend - all was fine until last night when the router stopped broadcasting the signal. I've reset the modem countless times and powered it down and back on again.
The router is now working fine - but I'm unable to change any of the wireless security settings. When I try to change the setting under Wireless > Wireless Security to WEP, it just jumps back to Disable and no changes can me made. Same situation when trying to enable a Wireless MAC Filter?
Any ideas? I don't want to use the router without any security in place!

make sure to select the correct model and version of your router. if you cant see the model # of your router as one of the downloads, you will need to have the router replace (hope you'll not).

Running WPA Wireless security w/ OSX 10.2

I am running an older G3 iBook on my wireless system and it does not seem to work with WPA wireless security. I am using a Netgear G614 router, which works fine except with the iBook. The iBook has no problem with the wireless security turned off and I would like to avoid using WEP, if possible. I posted this in the older OS sections with no response. Help!

I have a similar problem with which I've been struggling for months. My MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working with my home router - it showed as connected but would not browse.
I have eventually boiled it down to a problem with WPA security. Ethernet networking works, networking with WEP security and no security works, but WPA doesn't. This applies to any router, not just mine at home.
When it originally failed, my MacBook was running OS X 10.4.11. Rolling back to 10.4.9 and before removes the error, but 10.4.10, 10.4.11, 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 all exhibit this failure. The fault is not evident on my iMac G5 or my new iMac Intel, or on my daughter's XP PC.
Therefore, it is a combination of hardware and software issues. So don't expect a cure just by upgrading!
Does anyone have any ideas for a cure, please?

WRT160nV3 wireless security repeatedly disabling

I have the WRT160nV3 and am having a problem with the wireless security. I set up the wireless security but everytime I notice the signal slows down or I get dropped I go to check it and it shows the security is disabled. Sometimes other people are there so I remove them, and ENABLE AGAIN. After that it seems to work fine.
I have had to do this multiple times. After Enabling I have saved the settings everytime but it happens all the time now. Does anyone have any insight? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hard reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and release. Wait 10 seconds and power cycle the router. Connect via wired computer to 192.168.1.1 username blank, password 'admin' and reconfigure the router from scratch. Now check again.

Wrt160nv2 wireless security help

Hello I'm new to this forum and had some questions regarding the wireless security settings on this router (WRT160Nv2) I have the security mode set to: WPA2 and what I need to know is which Encryption is better AES or the other setting which is TKIS or AES shouldint it be just TKIS? AES offers a higher level of encryption than TKIP, or "TKIP or AES".
Here are my other tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default wireless settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal", "enterprise" or "radius". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. The patch is located in SP3, so you will need SP3 to run WPA2.
Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

WRT54G Strange connection issue when wireless security is enabled

The model # is WRT54G v2.2 with firmware 4.21.1. I knew that my internet connection was good because I connected my laptop directly to the wireless antenna. When the antenna is connected to my wireless router I can't connect, wired or wireless. I decided to reset the router and program back in the changes that I have made. I checked for internet connection after the reset, it's there. Made more changes, still good. Then when I enabled wireless security using WEP the wired and wireless internet connection goes away. Any ideas to fix this. Can I go back to the previous version of firmware?

hi... go to ftp.linksys.com/pub/network and try downloading older firmware for the router and downgrade the firmware, after that reset the router back to factory default settings and reconfigure it...

Router address to make my wireless secure

My wireless has never been secure. I am trying to now make it secure but I can't find the IP address or router address for my Airport Express. I have checked the manual. I have searched the web. Any ideas?

When you say that you are trying to make the wireless secure, are you saying that you need to set up security and a password for the wireless network?
If yes, you need to use the AirPort Utility application for this.
It is already on your Mac, located as follows:
Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility

Facetime works with wireless security disabled, dropped otherwise

On a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, configured as an access point.
Security mode: WPA-Personal
WPA mode: WPA2 Only
Cipher type:AES
I tried inserting a 1.3 Mb file, to no avail.
I have an iPad mini with OS 8.1.2
Please let me know if more information is req'd.
To have facetime with my son and grandchildren I have change the security mode to 'none' during the session! Really? If I do not, we have about a one minute session that is dropped.
Any ideas will be explored!

Three answers:
1-The router is an access point as it is a 'slave' to the wired router. The wired router assigns the ip addresses and is connected to the Comcast-Arris modem.
2-Security mode options: None, WEP, WPA-Personal, WPA-Enterprise and
the password options are Auto (WPA or WPA2), WPA2 Only, WPA only. I chose the WPA2 only as some other place I'd seen something about a problem with the TKIP cipher. I'm a novice, though. What you're suggesting makes sense and I'll try to go to WPA only.
3-I tried inserting a file showing the wireless router setup page, via a screen shot. I can't even insert a half Mb file, for whatever reason. The error page says to keep it to less than 2 Mb.
-As above, the wireless device must be an access point. It's in the living room, where wireless devices are mostly used. The wired router is in one corner of the house, with the main winxp pc.
-I can't make the wireless router security mode WPA2, so I used WPA for everything and see if it works for the next facetime session. All the other wireless devices are now functional.
-I'm not understanding the third option. Is that for my tower, each wireless device?
(No, winxp is not a joke. I use it as my main pc os and have no need to replace it. I'm posting my problem in this forum because we now have an apple product, the mini iPad, and I'd sure like to use it for the facetime with the wireless security setting on during the session. So far, it's REQUIRED to turn the wireless security off to keep the facetime session longer than about 60 seconds.)

We have several sites where we have some Cisco Access points running IOS. We are currently doing WEP 128b, with Mac-Authentication against a central ACS Server.
But having fixed WEP, and mac registrations is not very practical.
Do you know about any method to have authentication against Active Directory (passing through the Cisco ACS), and Dynamic WEP Keys ?
Any recommendation is welcome.
Of course with this we would like to bring up our level of security.

An ACS server can be used to do authentication based on user logon to AD.
So it would only require a single login if your wireless adapter supports it.
You would just need to enable the wireless vlan to do 802.1x (EAP-FAST) authentication.

Wireless security cam

hi,
I am planning to install several wireless security cams at home, and the one from linksys seemed a good choice to me.
I am looking for a specific feature that I am not able to find any explanation on. In the features I see that I am abe to watch live immages remotely, and record those live images. What I am also looking for, is that the system can automatically takes and record immages, even when I am not connected to the cam. assumethat there is a stranger in our house, I wantthose images t be recorded at a later stage so that I can see who has been there.
Is that possible with the linksys cam?

Yes,using the motion detection feature on the linksys camera it is possible...Some good linksys camera are WVC54GC,WVC54GCA,WVC80N.
