Wireless vs secured wireless

I am encountering a problem where one of my laptops will not see the secured wireless linksys connection.  It sees linksys, but only the unsecured.  So far, I have gotten the other computers in my home to see the secured network, I then enter the password and it connects fine.  However, for this one laptop, it will not find teh secured network.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Fun story as to why you should never use the default SSID:
My friends and I were renting a house together one year and were just setting up our wireless network. We had a fresh router set up at a spot where we could all get pretty good reception, then we went to secure it. We were not the only ones with an SSID of "Linksys", so we chose the one with the better signal, assuming it was ours. It wasn't. It was our neighbor's unsecured network. We, of course, did not realize this as we secured it.
It took us a day or two to realize our mistake, and we gave our neighbors their wireless network back.

  • HP Wireless Printers cannot connect to WPA2-secured WiFi networks with Cisco/Meraki WAPs

In the last two months, I've had the displeasure of working with two very different HP printers and attempting to make them work on a WPA2-secured wireless network.  All attempts to authenticate fail with "invalid phassphrase".
I'm not the first person to encounter this, it's a problem with many different HP wireless printers (I just happen to have physical access to the OfficeJet Pro 8610 & Deskjet 3511).
My equipment is a Cisco ASA 5505 Firewall running ASA 9.1x & Cisco Aironet 1142 running IOS 15.3.x.
What does work on the WPA2/AES SSID:  Apple MacBook Air running OSX 10.10.2, Three Windows-Based laptops running Windows 8.1 Update 1, an iPhone 5s, Three Windows Phone 8.1 devices, Roku 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Sharp Aquos TV, Amazon Streaming Stick, and an Android Tablet (Jellybean).  Basically, everything.
What does not work on the WPA2 network:  OfficeJet Pro 8610 & Deskjet 3511.
To test the theory there is a problem with HP's implementation of WPA2 with regard to Cisco Aironet IOS, I built out a second SSID that only works in WPA/TKIP mode.  This solution works.  Both HP printers will join the WPA/TKIP network.
So, I'm able to demonstrate there is a certain connectivity issue.  When i look at AAA Debug on the WAP's console, I can observe the HPs attempt to authenticate "Bind I/F" on the WPA2 SSID, however they do not achieve authentication and do not pass the AAA phase.  However, on the WPA SSID, they bind and authenticate successfully.
To help illustrate this, here is my WAP running config.  It's about as simple as it can get.  There is no relevant MAC filtering or ACLs bound to any interface.  Noting that I have an ACL on remote access to the WAP (i.e. Locked down to SSH, disabling telnet).  The main point being that the ASA firewall is not a factor in this problem as the issue is at the WAP before WPA2 authentication can complete, therefore the printers never reach the network / when the printers connect to the WPA network, the operate fully & correctly.
If anyone at HP can indicate why this particular config is somehow improper or broken, that would be fantastic.  There should be no reason why Cisco / Meraki WAP owners have to lower wireless encryption standards just for a printer, be forced into wired, create separate SSIDs with lower encryption specifically for a device.

  • HP Officejet 6500, Windows XP and 7, wireless LAN security code is not accepted

The security code of my wireless LAN is not accepted by the HP6500A. According to the diagnostic software of HP a code consisting of more than 50 characters is required (the total number of characters can not be identified because the code isgoing on out of the window). The security code of the route consists of 12 characters. Resetting the printer is not solving the problem.
This problem was identified after rinstalling the software after problems with printing: connection with the printer was identified; message: "busy with printing", but no printing result at all.

Security codes can be in ASCII or HEX.  I'm guessing that the diagnostics is reporting HEX and the printer entry is in ASCII.
You can try running the diagnostics SW on the Windows 7 computer.  It might return the key in ASCII.
A good option is to get the password from somewhere other than the diagnostics.  Maybe you stored it somewhere or wrote it down?  Once you get it try to enter from the front panel.
Can I get a little information from you?
    What router brand model?
What security mode are you using (WEP, WPA, WPA2)?
Which model of the 6500 do you have (6500 or 6500a)?

  • Brand New C309g will not connect wirelessly with ANY wireless security options enabled

Printer will connect via wired ethernet. I can use the http utility.
Printer will connect via unsecured wireless connection.
Printer defaults to autoconfig (169.xxx)when connected  via WEP (both open and shared), will not connect with a manual IP address. Cannot access http utility.
Printer won't even autoconfig when connected via WPA-Personal - instead says "No connection found."
Printer is in the same uncluttered room as the router.
ALL OTHER wireless network devices work fine and keep up with security changes.
I have legacy devices on the network that make me want to run with WEP.
I've run the HP Network Diagnostic. It can access my router just fine. It cannot find the printer.
    Router is D-Link DIR-655.
I jump through the right hoops - refresh router, restore factory defaults on printer, etc. All other wireless network devices work fine.
I want to pull an "Office Space" on this brand-new printer - please save me from doing so!

Ooops, my mistake.  Thanks for pointing it out.
Another idea is to make sure the firmware is updated on the router.
Also, from the control panel of the printer: Setup > Network > Wireless Network Test.  It will self-test the printer radio.

  • Need help on how to secure my wireless connection.....

im new to the wireless thing and im trying to figure all this stuff out. i bought the wireless g 2.4 broadband router  because i have a wireless notebook and everthing has been going fine until recently. i have excellent connection but my speed keeps going up and down but it use to stay on 54 Mbps or 48 Mbps (my notebook connection) can tell me whats wrong on that part? Another issue is how do i manually go about securing my connection because i feel like anybody can use my connection  and that my desktop computer that houses the connection is vulnerable. All these problems started ever since a suspicious vehicle was stopping around my house. please help

Hi…First of all hardwire your computer with your router and then Login in router setup page through your internet explorer by typing in 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer > address bar > skip username and enter ‘admin’ as password > click ok. You will get router setup page in front of you, click Wireless Tab > click 2nd Sub Tab under Wireless as ‘Wireless Security’, enable wireless security, select WEP and security mode, wireless encryption level as 64 Bit 10 hex digits, and type in 10 digit number without any spaces, symbols and alphabets in WEP Key 1 box. And that’s your wireless network key or password. Do not change any other settings on that page and click save settings and then exit the page. As a result your wireless network is secured. Use that 10 digit number when your wireless computer will demand it while connecting to your wireless network.

  • Wireless setup in a secured school network

Our elementary school has an HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One C310 printer. This printer was purchased to be used with Apple iPads because it is on Apple's list of Airprint enabled printers. We are having trouble connecting it to our wireless network. The network WAPs are ceiling mounted and have WAP2 Enterprise security. How do we get the printer to see the network? Also how do we enable the Airprint feature?

    Hello.
As far as I've been told, WPA2 Enterprise security is not supported for wireless connections in consumer products.

  • How to set up a password or security using wireless g broadband router wrt54g

Hello Everyone I have had my router for a while and a friend mentioned I should password protect my connection so other people can't lech off of my wireless connection. My roter is installed and connected to my main office computer and I only bought it so i could use my laptop around the house. Everytime I go to profile then secuirty settings and try to imput any password and hit ok. Well after I connect to my wireless profile it comes up with my router has no secuirty turned on at this point. Yet I read from many sites that my router which is model wrt54g has secuirty features. Could someone please help me figure out how to password protect my wireless connection. THank you

    Hit there exiledone1!
If there'd be any computer which is working through the router, you could get into the router's User Interface without any problems then. You need to get to this page so that you'd be able to do necessary changes on it's wireless settings.
http://192.168.1.1 would be the address, type this on the Address Bar of your Internet Explorer browser or Mozilla Firefox browser. If you'll be prompted for a login page, simply leave the username blank (or don't write anything on it) and your password would be admin. You'll be able to see the Wireless Tab once you'll be inside the page and below the Wireless Tab would be subtabs and one of them is Wireless Security. Just click on Wireless Security and you can choose WPA for your Security Mode. Just type in anything right on the WPA Pre-shared key field and this will then serve as your wireless password (a.k.a network key). Just make sure the length of the key would not be less than the count of 8 characters.

  • How to Change Security Settings on an Existing Wireless Network

I'd like to change existing network security settings to WPA2, AES or at least to from TKIP to AES.
I'm familiar with browser access to the router and with how to change the settings on the router.
My question is how to do this as painlessly as possible for the network.  Step by step would be nice
I guess first I have to change the router settings using the computer running Easy Link Advisor?
Do I then have to disconnect/reconnect that computer?
Do I have to disconnect every other computer and then connect each one again with the updated settings?
Will the change in security settings affect my print server?  If so, do I have to set it up from scratch in ELA?
For the record, I have a WRT-300N and the print server is a 54g.
Anyone who reads this may also want to look into recent news.  May not be a big deal, but a vulnerability of WPA/TKIP has been identified.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Do I really need to set security for my wireless connection. I searched for available WiFi in my area prior to installing my  network and none were available. Does that matter?
The network never did function right from the start. My desktop is a Dell Inspiron 510n and is not wireless capable? So when I tried to add my HP mni 1000 it did not let me access the Internet.
So now I have an unsecured network. Am I vulnerable to attack?
Which leads me to my real question How do I change the security settings?
Oh yeah, my home computer crashed due to a program I downloaded, so I do not have access to it. i'm a mess....
    Thanks,for any help

  • Wireless security question

    Hi,
I'm new to wireless broadband and set up my BT Home Hub 2.0 about a week and a half ago.  When I was first configuring the settings, I was prompted to change my admin password, which I did.  I subsequently decided to change the wireless key as well, for extra security.  I simply went into Hub Manager - Advanced Settings, viewed my wireless key, entered a new one and clicked apply.  It seemed to update immediately without me needing to do anything else and my connection was not affected.
Last night I decided I wanted to change my wireless key again to make it even stronger.  I followed the same procedure as before, but this time when I clicked 'apply' the process froze, my wireless connection was lost and when I tried to reconnect I couldn't.  I re-set the hub to default and started again, then tried changing the wireless key whilst plugged into the hub with the ethernet cable.  This worked fine, although I then needed to re-configure my laptop with the new security key.  What puzzles me is that I didn't have to do this when I first changed the key - I didn't need to connect by ethernet and I didn't need to re-configure my laptop.
This makes me wonder if my original change to my wireless key ever happened - although every time I logged into Hub Manager and checked the security settings, it showed the new key.  If I had  changed the key, then how was my laptop able to connect to the hub if I hadn't manually updated it?  I was definitely always connecting to my home hub and not BT Fon/Openzone which I am opted out of.  I am worried that when I originally tried to change the security key I may have inadvertently switched off my security altogether, yet in Hub Manager it hasn't changed from day 1 - it's always been set at 'Use WPA + WPA2', and there has never been any indication that I am connecting to an insecure network: i.e. there's no yellow triangle with an exclamation mark over my homehub wireless connection indicator, security type for the network has always been showing as 'WPA-PSK' and the wireless and broadband lights on my hub have always been blue and not orange.  So has my wireless connection been secure during that period, or not?

    Thanks for your responses.
Yes, I can see now any changes to security are best done via ethernet.
Regarding the first time I changed the key, I did change it (wirelessly) from my laptop, but only in the 'hub manager' application.  Is it possible that this was sufficient to update the laptop settings as well?  I didn't make any manual changes to the network connection info on my laptop because I was connecting just fine so didn't think I had to!
I can't remember suspecting the connection has 'frozen' when I first changed the key, or pressing re-set on the hub... at the time it just seemed to update really quickly with no problems.  However, it looks possible that it never really changed the key and it was still on the default setting - despite what was showing up in my browser (strange that it would retain information that had never been properly registered??).
As regards default security settings, I have never turned WPA off or set the hub to 'no encryption', but I'm still a bit concerned that in making what may have been a failed attempt to change the security key something may have happened to switch it off without my knowing... As far as I can tell, that didn't happen, but would it be obvious if that had happened, e.g. would my home hub connection have the same exclamation mark as the BT Fon or Openzone unsecured networks - and would it say 'Security Type: Unsecured', and/or would the wireless or broadband light on the hub glow orange?

  • IPad 2 can only connect to unsecured Wireless network.  It won't connect to my secured network at home or at work

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal.  It keeps rejecting my password.  I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue.  However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue.  Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue?  If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

    - I've used the correct pw (it worked till 2 days ago)
    - I use road runner from Time warner, not sure of the mac address filtering
    -Security is WPA PSK.
I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue.  I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

  • Unable to aquire IP address on secured network via wireless.

I have a WRT54GS which we secured the network on over a year ago. (WPA encyption setting). This christmas we got the kids one of those mini-laptops but when we went to put it on our wireless network it could not aquire the IP address. Using the ethernet cable to connect it directly to the router did allow it to get online with the LAN setting enabled.
In order to finally get the new laptop connected via wireless we had to unsecure our system. Now we need to figure out why the laptop was unable to aquire the IP address so we can fix the issue and resecure our network. Any ideas/suggestions on the subject would be appreciated.

  • Using AX as wireless router, how to set up w/ security and airtunes on XP

I previously had a Linksys wireless router. I just purchased an Airport express to use as the wireless router (and remove the Linksys router) as well as use the Airtunes functionality.
After some trial and error, I have been able to wireless connect my computer to the AX on it's own (the linksys router is now unplugged and out of the equation). I can connect to the internet fine on my PC (XP Pro SP2).
Trouble is, when I use the Network Setup Assistant, it shows the apple network listed, but it can't connect to it, no matter how many times I try, reboot my machine or reboot the AX. I've tried both the "setting up a new network" and "editing an existing network" option, and in each selection, after a few minutes of trying to connect to the network, I just get a failure message.
If I try and use the Admin utility, nothing shows up in the left-hand list window, and when I Press re-scan, still nothing shows (it doesn't even appear to scan).
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can't find simple instructions on how to set up the AX as the only wireless router for a PC and set up security and Airtunes (I'm assuming enabling airtunes is done in these applications, as I haven't seen anything about that yet either).
Any ideas on how this is done with a PC? Much thanks!
    Dell 4500 series

I have found the 'DHCP Reservations' option on the AirPort Extreme to be buggy.  I seem to remember it causing IP conflicts for some reason.  I think what I remember is that if the computer with the reservation was off, and the DHCP server then handed out that IP to another DHCP client, then there would be a conflict when the reserved IP computer was turned back on.  Maybe it was an issue in ealier versions of the AE or OS X as the case may be, and maybe it's been corrected, but I've never bothered using it agian since the method I describe below has always worked without fail.  Also, I'm guessing DHCP Reservations would work fine if one manually enters IPs outside of the DHCP range but in the AE 'DHCP Reservation Setup Assistant' the IP options provided are within the DHCP range which to me makes no sense and increases the potential for IP conflicts.
Here's what I do to setup a mixed environment of static and dynamic IPs on my network.  It works like a charm and does not require the DHCP server (beyond the distribution of dynamic IPs to hosts using DHCP).
For machines on my network that are accepting services from the public network, I set them up with static IPs using the 'Manually' option (System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Configure IPv4).  The settings for 'Router' IP address and 'DNS Server' IP address should both be set with your gateway/router LAN IP).  Use an IP address below or above the DHCP range of adresses (in AE/Internet/DHCP/DHCP Beginning & Ending Address).
i.e. if my subnet is 10.0.1.1 and my DHCP range is 10.0.1.100 to 10.0.1.150, you could set the static IPs on your local hosts as 10.0.1.x where x = any number from 2 - 99 or from 151 - 200 as an example.
All other machines and devices that do not require static routing are setup as DHCP clients and get a dynamic IP from the AE.  To me it's a simpler setup though it might take a little extra time to setup initially.

Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?
