WLC 2106 ports and vlans
I am connecting a 2106 to our small network. If I set a specific port on the 2106 for the "guest interface" and wire that port directly to the DMZ is it still necessary to define a VLan? Does defining the ports separate the traffic?
What I am thinking is leaving all (except the guest wireless) of the interfaces on port 1, wiring that to our normal network and setting up radius authent. All of the network traffic then goes out through the normal firewall interface.
Then setup the guest interface to go to "port 4" on the 2106. Run a wire fom "port 4" to a NIC dedicated to the DMZ.
Note: The "nics" listed above are actually PNics on separate VSwitches in VSphere.
Thanks,
Bob
Thanks for your help!
It looks as if I need to read up some more on the use of this unit. It was dropped in my lap by a third party so I am kind of faking it. Any other suggestions would not hurt my feelings:
Internal network is 192.168.5.x, guest wireless is 172.16.1.x. At this point I am going to have all interfaces go to "port 1" except the guest wireless which will go to "port 4".
I will plug "port 1" into my regular switch and "port 4" into a DMZ switch.
From what I gather I will have to give the "port 4" traffic an exclusive "VLan indentifier", change the Vsphere switch to include that VLan, etc.
Thanks again,
Bob

WLC 2106 and Linksys Bridge WET610N works with 7.0.116.0 release?
Hi all,
i'm having troubles with WLC 2106 controller and several wireless bridges, so i'd like to know if i can fix it in some way.
My environment is as follows:
1 WLC 2106 with 2 Aironet 1240G
I have a production appliance that needs an ethernet port to work, so i bought a Linksys Bridge WET610N to make it works via wireless.
The Linksys bridge connects to the 1240G as a client and works well, but the appliance connected to the ethernet port of the bridge is unreachable.
Searching for the problem, i found that the wlc act as a proxy arp for the wireless clients and being the ethernet appliance a "passive" client, the controller isn't aware of it.
My WLC is running the 7.0.98.0 firmware. In the release notes for the 7.0.116.0, in the "Non-Cisco WGB Support" seems to state that now also non cisco bridges can work using the passive client feature. I've already enabled it on my controller but this didn't solve my problem.
Can anyone tell me if the upgrade to the 7.0.116.0 can fix it?
Thanks in advance
Riccardo CoppolaI'm not sure what (cheap) devices can do the wgb feature that is inter-brand compatible.
The thing is that the WLC enforces the rule "1 wireless client = 1 client". Meaning you can't bridge multiple clients behind a wireless clients, that just screws up roaming mechanisms etc ...
Cisco WGBs have the IAPP protocol to tell the WLC "listen, I'm a WGB wireless client and those are the wired clients connected to me, allow them on the network".
What does "universal WGB" feature does is that the WGB forwards the traffic of the client (only 1 client supported in this case !) to the infrastructure AP but the WGB never sends anything with its own mac address. It uses the client mac address as source.
This means that the WLC has no way of knowing that there is more than 1 device. It just thinks that your wired client is a wireless client.
So it's more than mac cloning since the WgB has to be the one authenticating to the infrastructure (Wpa/wpa2 whatsoever) by spoofing the client mac. The WGB is still in charge of roaming decisions and so on and so on...
I hope it clarifies the situation ? -
I have WLC 2106,And 5 LWAP, 3 Cat3560 Switches.and my 2851 CME router providing DHCP for Data VLAN 1 nad Voice VLAN 100
any one can please help me how to do the basic configuration
when i configure Managment and AP manager on WLC 2106 on untaged VLAN 0 i can able to ping but when i cahnged the VLAN to 1 im not able to communicate to WLC from switch or any port from WLC
please help me to configure the WLC
Thanks & Regards
PRajothThe software guide states "A zero value for the VLAN identifier (on the Controller > Interfaces page) means that the interface is untagged.
The default (untagged) native VLAN on Cisco switches is VLAN 1. When controller interfaces are configured as tagged (meaning that the VLAN identifier is set to a non-zero value), the VLAN must be allowed on the 802.1Q trunk configuration on the neighbor switch and not be the native untagged VLAN.
Cisco recommends that only tagged VLANs be used on the controller. You should also allow only relevant VLANs on the neighbor switch's 802.1Q trunk connections to controller ports. All other VLANs should be disallowed or pruned in the switch port trunk configuration. This practice is extremely important for optimal performance of the controller.
Note Cisco recommends that you assign one set of VLANs for WLANs and a different set of VLANs for management interfaces to ensure that controllers properly route VLAN traffic"
Can you supply a screen shot of the interfaces page from your WLC and supply the WLC switch port configuration also? Just to sanity check what you have so far? -
WLC-2106 and multiple interfaces on the same network
Hi there,
I recently created a TAC request to the Cisco support regarding our WLC-2106, but they could not help me. Basically I just learned that you can create new interfaces for the wireless LAN controller and then dedicate them to a given wireless network (SSID). This way I could more effectively utilize network bandwidth also. Problem is that all of the interfaces have to be in a different network segment in order to work, which is not what I want. I specifically want to have several interfaces on the same network segment.
Has anyone tried to accomplish the same?Basically what I've misunderstood is that all the traffic generated by our wireless clients have been going through the single 100Mbit/s ethernet port on the wireless LAN controller (management interface), and to mitigate this I thought I could create new interfaces (ports) and dedicate those to given WLAN networks.. I see now that this is not supported. Not inside the same network at least.
So, by reading further and consulting my best friend Google I learned about a setting called "AP Mode". Changing that from Local (the default) to H-REAP the APs should not route their traffic anymore through the management interface on the wireless controller, but instead route all the client traffic directly to the local LAN. This way you effectively remove the 100Mbit/s bottle-neck when all the APs were using the management interface both for configuration and client data traffic.
It seems you also have to enable H-REAP Local switching from a given WLAN network in addition to changing the AP Mode of your access points to H-REAP. I'm still in the testing phase here so should anyone have any insight to this, I'd be greatful to hear more. -
Wlc management port can't trunk other than native vlan
Hello,
Ihave installed my first WLC 5508 with this topology :
WLC Connected trought distrubtion SFP 1Gb port to Core Switch port configured as Trunk port permetting 3 Wireless VLAN :
- Management WLC, Wireless Voice and Wireless Data Vlan (native Vlan is management WLAN).
- I have created 2 dynamic interface on WLC regarding my Wireless VLAN :
10.7.1.0/24 : Defaut Management Virtual Interface when installing WLC +
10.7.6.0/24 : Voice Virtual Interface and
10.7.2.0/24 : Wireless Data Virtual Interface trought GUI.
DHCP configured on each dynamic interface is the L3 vlan interface for equal VLAN subent for CORE SWITCH contining IP DHCP Pool.
WLC Management Inerface IP adress is : 10.7.1.10/24
I Have create 2 WLAN with SSID named Data ID 1 & Voice ID2.
I have create and AP Groupe named APGRP1 containing the AP registered on WLC and using both SSID WLAN.
Both AP are connected to Switch acess port configured as access port to native management WLC VLAN.
I have create 3 IP DHCP pool on Core switch with related L3 Interfaces for Inter VLAN routing.
Problem: when I try to connect from laptop to Data SSID I get IP Address from management WLC VLAN a non DATA VLAN.
the same case from Wireless IP Phone configured with Voice SSID.
What can I modifie that permet to both device to get IP address from the correct VLAN?
ThnksHi Adil,
Q1 >> AP access port on the switch must be configured on an Access port mode or trunk mode?
ANS - The LWAPP/ CAPWAP APs connected to the switchport should be a Access port not trunk.
Q2>> if the first case, setting the port on, the same VLAN like WLC Management VLAN will support other WLAN Vlans (voice and data)?
ANS - Yes it does support, since the traffic which involes the WLAN will be inside the LWAPP/CAPWAP logical tunnel.
Q3>> I will verify the interface mapping between WLAN and Dynamic Interfaces and i will tell you.
ANS - I will be waiting for your response!!
lemme know if this answered your question..
Regards
Surendra

Does someone know if WLC 2106 support AP 1140 ? I read that AP 1140 is CAPWAP only and I don't know if WLC 2106 supports CAPWAP.
ThanksYes it does, you may have to upgrade your controller software to get 802.11n and CAPWAP, use the latest code 6.0.182.
CAPWAP was supported from code 5.2.157
The max throughput on the 2106 though is only 100mbps so yo wont see the highest speeds -
Just recently I am having issues with my WLC 2106 WiFi network and iPhones. For the past week, the iPhones have been locking up the network much like as it was described with the ARP issues with the exception that what I have been reading, this issue did not effect the 2100 series.
I've done searches but have not found anything applicable to what is happening now.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. It's running on v. 4.0.217.0. Right now I'm controlling who is accessing the wifi via MAC filter to prevent anyone with an iphone to log on but that just doesn't cut it since there's a lot of visitors coming in to use the wifi.
I won't be able to go in and do more testing for a week or two to get that debug log.
But this seems to be a common issue with at least the 2106s. As soon as anyone logs in with an iphone, the controller locks up and the only thing to do is reboot. It only fairly recently started happening so maybe it's only with the newer iphones? -
Port Channel and VLAN trunking
When configuring trunking of VLANS accross a Port Channel, do we need to configure vlan pruning on both the port-Channel port and the physical ports ???
E.g. do I need to apply the "switchport trunk allowed vlan add " command under each physical port and the port channel port ? Or only under the port channel port ?
ThanksIn short, yes. Configure the port channel interface exactly as you do the physical interfaces and both ends should be an exact match. otherwise you will have problems getting the channel to come up or stay up.

4500 Aggregate policers and Per-Port Per-VLAN QoS
Hello,
I want to limit the aggregate traffic of multiple VLANs on a trunk using an aggregate policer. I also need Per-Port Per-VLAN QoS for other VLANs on the same trunk.
To cut a long story short, will the example config below work?
qos aggregate-policer pol_aggr_10Mbit 10m 12.5k conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
policy-map Aggr_10Mbit
class class-default
police aggregate pol_aggr_10Mbit
policy-map Limit_10M
class class-default
police 10m 12.5k conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
interface GigabitEthernetx/y
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
! Aggregate 10Mbit VLANs
vlan-range 208, 316, 909
service-policy output Aggr_10Mbit
! 10 Mbit VLANs
vlan range 20, 50-100
service-policy output Limit_10M
Regards, JanYour config looks good . Actually Per-port per-VLAN QoS (PVQoS) offers differentiated quality-of-services to individual VLANs on a trunk port. It enables service providers to rate limit individual VLAN-based services on each trunk port to a business or a residence. In an enterprise Voice-over-IP environment, it can be used to rate limit voice VLAN even if an attacker impersonates an IP phone. A per-port per-VLAN service policy can be separately applied to either ingress or egress traffic.

Hello,
I have problem with new one WLC 2106 controller. I make this basic configuration (after reset):
(Cisco Controller) >show interface summary
Interface Name Port Vlan Id IP Address Type Ap Mgr Guest
ap-manager 1 10 10.10.10.21 Static Yes No
management 1 10 10.10.10.20 Static No No
virtual N/A N/A 1.1.1.1 Static No No
At this point, everything works OK. Controller is accesible via HTTPS, AP (one 1130) is connected too. But next I need create new WLAN and another interface VLAN - named ak-lan
config interface create ak-lan
config interface port ak-lan 1
HTTPS acces is still working, but when I configure IP adress:
config interface address dynamic-interface ak-lan 10.10.11.10 255.255.255.0 10.10.11.1
HTTPS acces stops. In fact, it seem like HTTPS starts on new interface - it's accesible via 10.10.11.10, but (after certificate warning) shows only empty page (Page is not accesible..)
I dont have an idea why. I tray downgrade software (originaly comes with 7.0.98.0) to 6.0.196.0, whitch I use on another same controller, but the behavior is the same. Now I use software 6.0.199.4. Again the same behavior.
"show interface summary" says:
(Cisco Controller) >show interface summary
Interface Name Port Vlan Id IP Address Type Ap Mgr Guest
ak-lan 1 11 10.10.11.10 Dynamic No No
ap-manager 1 10 10.10.10.21 Static Yes No
management 1 10 10.10.10.20 Static No No
virtual N/A N/A 1.1.1.1 Static No No
(Cisco Controller) >
All interfaces (excluding virtual) matched to ping. All ïnterfaces have netmask 255.255.255.0.
There was another strange thing - "show sysinfo" says that I use sw 6.0.199.4 and emergency is 7.0.98.0, but "show boot" says:

I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

WLC upgrade license and access point
Hi everyone,
I need suggestion regarding wlc 5508 upgrade license. Right now i have 150 license for access points. There will be upgrade around 300 access points. So we are planning to buy new license until the maximum capacity of 5508 (500 licenses).
Our management ip address is 192.168.50.x/24 . so all the access point are pointed to this management ip address (in the same subnet)
First question,
Because there will be an upgrade to around 450 access point. The current management ip address will not be enough.
Please, give me the best suggestion ?
Should i create another management ip address ? or I need to make a bigger subnet using the current management ip address ?
if i create a bigger ip address, the current access points must be set again yups ?
Second question
There will be a new link connected to the wlc, and i want to create new user subnets.
what is the best practices for this matter ?
if there are better suggestion, please let me know, i am still learning about wireless
I have attached the topology.
Thank you
FanieFor an example, a 5508 can support up to 500 AP's, and the AP's can be in one large subnet or be in many different subnets and or even different locations. As long as the ap knows how to discover the WLC or the ap already had joined the WLC, then the AP's don't have to be on the same subnet as the WLC. The easiest way to have AP's join is to stage them on the same subnet as the WLC management and then move them to a different subnet. I would probably have no more than 100 AP's per subnet, but that's me. Stage some AP's on the management subnet that the WLC is on and then when the AP's join and complete downloading code, change the switch port Vlan and shut and no shut the port. The ap will come back up and join the WLC.

WLC 2106 comes up after rebooting
Hello.
I have installed a wlc2106 (ver 6.0.199.4).Everything was working fine until today...
Wlc seems that looses connectivity with core switch (3750).That time i couldn't ping the management ip and i couldn't see it with cdp.
After rebooting the controller the connectivity came up.The same situation was repeated after 30 minutes.
I have attach the logs.
Thanks.Hi,
WLC port and the switchport will auto negotiate the speed/duplex...You need not hard code speed/duplex on the switchport...You may try resetting
the switchport to defaults and configuring it again..for example,
(config)# default interface
(config)#int <>
(config-if)#switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
(config-if)#switchport trunk allowed vlan x x x
(config-if)#switchport mode trunk
No need to set the native vlan on the switchport side if you have the tagging on the controller
management interface...
Once you make the above changes, reboot the WLC.
Thanks, -
Hello,
What is the recomended way to connect 5 APs 1242 to a wlc 2106?
Connect directly the 5 APs to the wlc and use one port for the management interface and connection to the switch or to connect the APs to a switch and use one connection for the wlc?
Thanks in advance.Depends on the AP.
One FastEthernet connection to the switch doens't "really" create a bottleneck. Your AP might. If you, say, you have 1130 or older then I'd say no significant bottleneck because the APs are also FastEthernet.
If you use the newer ones, like the 1250 and newer, which has GigEthernet and/or higher throughput (if you enable 802.11n) the yes. The switch AND the WLC 2100 are both the bottleneck. -
Microsoft Server 2003 / PEAP / WLC 2106
Has anyone ever had a certificate vanishing issue on an M$ Server 2003? For some strange reason the certificate under my IAS RAS policy keeps disappearing after an undetermined amount of time? The server is the only DC / CA root / IAS in the forest. I'm not sure why the self-signed cert. will not remain in the cert. store?
Current config.:
(2) WLC 2106 (both RADIUS clients on DC/IAS)
(5) 1141 LAPs
Authentication: PEAP/MS-CHAPv2
Encryption: TKIP/AES
Any ideas? Thanks. In 4.1, disabling DHCP proxy did just that, it disabled the "proxy". If you ever look at your dhcp lease of a wireless client, it comes from a dhcp server of 1.1.1.1 (virtual IP of the controller). With proxy disabled, the address will no longer be masked.
In 4.2 and beyond, disabling dhcp proxy actually disables the DHCP Relay that is the process of the controller sending the dhcp requests to a specified server.
So if in 4.1, you had "dhcp proxy" disabled, in 4.2 and beyond, you are actually disabling the relay as well.
If this is indeed the case, enable dhcp proxy, or add an IP Helper adress to your router for this vlan, just like you would normally do for Wired clients.
