WLS Datasource

Hi,
I am storing a reference to the DataSource in a Singleton object. Does WLS synchronizes access to the DataSource internally? Should access to the DataSource be synchronized if multiple threads are calling the DataSource to get connection?

protection you need. All callers will get their own connection.

  • Database Access via WLS Datasource

    I need to access a database resource by JNDI Datasource lookup and not by JDBC Direct Connection. This is needed because the underlying database is an Oracle RAC with several machines and my intention is to use WLS MultiDatasource Feature to round-robin and failover all the database needs.
    Could someone help me ??
    Thanks in advance

    I'd like to access the same database from a
    standalone, command window program and have tried
    setting the INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY and PROVIDER_URL
    properties as shown below.I've never done this. I'm not sure if it can or should be done.
    The problem is that the standalone app isn't part of any Tomcat context.
    It also ties your standalong app to Tomcat. I don't think you want to do that.
    There's got to be a way to manage this without resorting to Tomcat. I'd look at the Commons docs to see.
    If I copy the JAR file containing
    BasicDataSourceFactory (viz. commons-dbcp-1.2.1.jar)
    from Tomcat's common\lib folder into Java's
    jre\lib\ext folder, This is a terrible idea. You shouldn't be putting anything in jre/lib/ext - it'll cause more problems than it's worth.
    Create a /lib directory for your project and put the 3rd party JARs in there. Disk space is cheap, and keeping all the artifacts that you need to create your app in one place is a good idea.

  • WLS 10.3.4: How to use OS authentication for JDBC Data Source

    Hello all,
    As a preface, I've tried searching the forum/Google for "OS authentication" and reading the WLS JDBC doc to no avail - if it's documented somewhere, a RTFM link would be much appreciated.
    I'm trying to set up a JDBC data source on WLS that leverages the OS Authentication capability of the Oracle database. If it would help, I can go into the reasoning behind why I want to do this, but basically, it's to simplify the config/deployment of a COTS application. What I have in the database is an "identified externally" user that corresponds to the OS user that is running the WebLogic Server. Normally, in tools such as SQL*Plus, I would use "/@db" as the username/password (in other words, no username and no password specified), and I would be logged in as the "idenfitied externally" user. I want to configure the same thing for a WebLogic Data Source, but if I leave the username/password blank, testing the connection in the WLS console gives me "invalid username/password, login denied" I've also tried using "/" as the username, as was documented in a quite old WLS faq, but that gives me the same result.
    Is there some magic switch I need to flip?
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John, there's no way to do that with connection pools, which is how WLS datasources get their
    connections, or middleware in general. WebLogic would have no way of knowing which if any of the
    pooled connections was appropriate for the current 'user', which is not the application user, but
    instead is the OS identity of the person who started the WebLogic server! If you start up your
    WebLogic server, and people start pointing their browsers to it, doing various stuff, the OS knows
    you started WebLogic, and maybe with the help of OCI, Oracle's JDBC might know it was you who
    started WebLogic's OS process, but what does the OS know about any user that may be running
    a browser or application elsewhere (even if on this same machine), when that browser or application
    connects to your WebLogic server process?

  • Error retrieving JDBC connection from remote client (WLS 10.0)

    Hallo,
    I get an error when I try to retrieve a JDBC connection from a WLS datasource using a remote client. My Weblogic server version is: WebLogic Server 10.0 MP1 Thu Oct 18 20:17:44 EDT 2007 1005184
    I use the following code to retrieve the JDBC connection:
    Hashtable<String,String> ctxEnv = null;
    InitialContext ctx = null;
    DataSource dataSource = null;
    Connection con = null;
    ctxEnv = new Hashtable<String,String>();
    ctxEnv.put(InitialContext.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");
    ctxEnv.put(InitialContext.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
    ctx = new InitialContext(ctxEnv);
    dataSource = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("datasources/XXX");
    con = dataSource.getConnection();
    When I execute this code with the weblogic.jar in the classpath everything works fine. However, when I put the wlfullclient.jar in the classpath which I created using the JAR Builder Tool I get the follwoing error:

    Can please anyone tell me what's going on there? What really astonishes me is that the class mentioned in the stacktrace is neither present in the wlfullclient.jar nor in the weblogic.jar, but using the weblogic.jar everything works fine. Any hint would be appreciated so much ...

    Hi. You should open an official support case,
    but it may be that we do not support
    external client JDBC with the client jar.Actually, I misspoke. I think we do supply a client
    jar, and that may be true
    what I said, but I see you're making your own. Can
    you find out what jar you're
    loading the InstrumentationSupport class from? That's
    the original location of
    the error, and that class doesn't exist in 10.0.Hi Joe, thanks for your reply.
    First of all, let me clarify what we did and why we did it: We have a stand-alone client application that needs to communicate with a Weblogic server using the t3 protocol (we don't want IIOP or HTTP tunneling). According to the official BEA documentation (see http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/basics.html and http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/t3.html) we needed to create the wlfullclient.jar file. We did this using the Weblogic JAR Builder Tool (see http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/jarbuilder.html). Unfortunatley we discovered the problem mentioned in my original post when we tried to run the client with that wlfullclient.jar.
    Regarding your classloading question: The InstrumentationSupportImpl class is located in the wlfullclient.jar, so it does exist in WLS 10.0 (it is also contained in the weblogic.jar). Unfortunately this JAR does not contain the required class "weblogic.diagnostics.instrumentation.InstrumentationDebug". I searched for this class and found it in the OSGI module "com.bea.core.diagnostics.instrumentor_1.0.1.0.jar" shipped with the Weblogic server. Obviously the JAR Builder Tool did not include the contents of this OSGI bundle into the wlfullclient.jar. I tried to include this OSGI bundle into the classpath of the client app manually (just for testing purposes), but this onyl resultet in another NoClassDefFoundError. This time the class "com.bea.objectweb.asm.Constants" could not be found.
    What astonishes me is the fact that the connection retrieval works fine when we only have the weblogic.jar in the client applications classpath, but fails when we have the wlfullclient.jar in the classpaht. It seems that the t3 communication is handled completely different, depending on what JARs I have in the classpath. Also, JMS communication works fine in both cases (i.e. for the weblogic.jar and the wlfullclient.jar). The only thing that causes problems (at least as far as we have discovered) is getting a JDBC connection from a datasource. I simply fail to see why this is the case.
    Best regards,
    DirkInteresting. I hope the official support case solves your problem.
    I would like to dig further, but it's too far afield for me with
    the workload I have at the moment.
    Joe

  • ODI-26029: Could not deploy the datasource automatically

    Hello All,
       I have deployed a Java EE agent as "ODIJavaAgent" on Managed server "odi_server1" on port 8001. Generated the server template from ODI studio and also agent test was successful. However when I try to deploy the data sources for e.g. work repository or data server, after dragging them on Data source tab of the agent, I am getting below error.
    Please help on this.
    Note: Weblogic was up and running during the process.
    java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.RuntimeException: ODI-26029: Could not deploy the datasource automatically.

  • WLS 10.3 ClassCastException obtaining JDBC connection

    I have a problem obtaining a JDBC connection in a java client application, using a WLS Datasource.
    - I've configured a JDBC datasource in a WLS 10.3 instance, using the Oracle thin driver (not the XA version) - and have successfully targetted this to my server and tested the connection via the console.
    - When viewing the JNDI Tree for the server, the Datasource is visible as expected.
    However, when I attempt to use a simple client program to obtain a datasource and JDBC connection I get the following error :
    java.lang.ClassCastException : weblogic.jdbc.common.internal.ConnectionEnv cannot be cast to java.io.Serializable
    Debugging shows a datasource is obtained and that the ClassCastException is thrown when an attempt is made to get a connection from the datasource. Note this code has been used successfully for previous WLS versions to obtain and test a connection (WLS 8.1 - WLS 10) and follows the expected steps :
    Hashtable<String, String> ht = new Hashtable<String, String>();
    ht.put( Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory" );
    ht.put( Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
    javax.naming.Context ctx = new InitialContext( ht );
    ds = (javax.sql.DataSource) ctx.lookup( pDataSourceName );
    Connection con = ds.getConnection();
    The client app has the following Jars on the classpath :
    wlclient.jar
    jdk1.6.0_07 runtime jar
    The client code has been built using jdk1.6.0_07
    i) Can you confirm if any additional libraries are required on the classpath
    ii) Please indicate if there are any special steps required to obtain a JDBC connection in WLS 10.3
    Thanks for your help.

  • PoollimitException in weblogic 10.3

    hi,
    we are facing the poollimit exception in weblogic 10.3 which is upgraded recently. previously our application is running in bea weblogic 8.1 SP5 application is working fine with connection pool settings default 25 and we are not getting the poollimit exception in 8.1 .
    Recently we are upgraded the weblogic from 8.1 to 10.3g in the new version of weblogic we are facing the poollimit exception .at frirst the connection pool is 25 then next day pool limit exception occurs and server is down. then increased to 50 again servere works for two day again server down for the same reason.
    My Questions are
    1) i have not changed my code same code is working without poollimit exception in 8.1 with 25 why it is not working in weblogic10.3g and is this nessary to increase the connection pool in 10.3?
    2) how may users it supports with default connection pool settings.
    Thanks in advance
    Chaitanya Kiran PVN

    Yes, I think your app is leaking connections, and in 8.1, GC was saving you. I'll
    bet your code is not thread-safe, such that one Connection variable is being
    set by multiple threads. If two threads each set the same variable, they will
    both use the last connection set, and the one overwritten is leaked. Connections
    should be "method-level" objects, defined in the method, obtained from a
    WLS datasource in the method, used, and then closed without fail, regardless
    of the code path, by the end/exit from that method.
    Here is the ideal standard for safe WebLogic JDBC. If you can
    adopt this, many such problems will go away. Pooling is fast,
    and is best used in a quick per-invoke fashion:, and if
    many of these 'top-level' methods are required for a
    given transaction, WebLogic pooling/DataSources and the
    WebLogic transaction coordinator will cooperate to ensure
    that all work is included in the transaction. Multiple
    connection closings at the user level will not hurt.
    For instance, for a non-XA datasource, we will transparently
    ensure that all of these multiple methods will (necessarily)
    get the exact real same connection for a given transaction.
    /* This is how you should make any of your top-level methods
    * that will do JDBC work for any of your user invokes.
    public void myTopLevelJDBCMethod()
    Connection c = null; // All JDBC objects should be method
    // level objects to ensure thread-safety
    // and prevent connection leaking.
    // Define the connection object before
    // the JDBC 'try' block.
    try {
    // This is the JDBC try block for this method. Do
    // all the JDBC for this method in this block.
    // Get the connection directly from our DataSource
    // in the try block. Do not get it from any method
    // that has kept a connection and is sharing it for
    // repeated use.
    c = myDataSource.getConnection();
    ... do all the JDBC for this method in the scope of this try block...
    ... you can pass the connection or sub-objects to sub-methods
    ... but none of these methods must expect to keep or use the
    ... objects they receive after their method call completes...
    (eg)
    DoSomethingFancyWith(c);
    // Use Prepared/Callable Statements. They are faster usually,
    // Especially because we cache them transparently with the pool.
    PreparedStatement p = c.prepareStatement(...);
    ResultSet rs = p.executeQuery();
    ProcessResult(myrs);
    // Close JDBC objects in the proper order: resultset, then statement, then connection
    rs.close(); // always close result sets ASAP at the level they were created
    p.close(); // always close statements ASAP at the level they were created
    // When the JDBC is finished in the try-block, close the con:
    c.close(); // always close connection ASAP in the same method
    // and block that created/obtained it.
    c = null; // set the con to null so the finally block below
    // knows it's been taken care of.
    catch (Exception e ) {
    ... do whatever, according to your needs... you do not have to
    ... have a catch block if you don't want it...
    finally {
    // Always have this finally block. A finally block is crucial
    // to ensure the connection is closed and returned to the pool,
    // (not leaked).
    // failsafe: Do every individual thing you want to do in the
    // finally block in it's own try block-catch-ignore so everything
    // is attempted.
    try {if (c != null) c.close();} catch (Exception ignore){}
    }

  • Weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.Blob_oracle_sql_BLOB ERROR

    Hi,
    we have an application developed with Oracle ADF with several CRUD screens. We deploy it on Weblogic and use as database oracle10G 10.2.0.4.
    On one specific screen, a delete button fails and gives following error:
    ERROR: weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.Blob_oracle_sql_BLOB
    Anybody who encountered a similiar problem and did you find a solution?
    Cheers,
    Robby

    Hi. The issue is that some oracle-specific BLOB JDBC code (which
    requires casting to concrete Oracle classes) is conflicting with
    WebLogic's prudent and correct behavior of wrapping every
    java.sql object delivered from it's WLS datasources. If you are
    able to alter the relevant JDBC code, I can describe what you
    can do.

  • WLS9.2 caching results of CallableStatement?

    Hello All,
    I've been flummoxed by a problem in which the results of a CallableStatement seem to be cached by our WebLogic 9.2 server. We have a connection pooled DataSource talking to Oracle8i (8.1.7.4.0), configured with 10 statements in a cache and the LRU algorithm, also 1 connection initially and a maximum of 15. We're using Oracle's ojdbc14.jar implementation and orai18n.jar.
    We're mostly executing CallableStatments for packaged procedures/functions that in turn call other procedures or run selects. What I'm geting at is, we're retrieving data rather than updating through our CallableStatement. The retreieved data we extract from the returned oracle ARRAY type using a homegrown map to the "shape" of each Struct underlying the ARRAY collection. In this problem, two CallableStatements are run and return data to our Java app, and at the start all is well. Then the underlying data is changed - via procedures in an oracle forms app on the database, not our Java app. Our Java app should display the changed data. The first CallableStatement runs again and an Eclipse remote debug shows the updated data, however the second CallableStatement continues to return the older data. We have oracle test harnesses that call the same procedures as our CallableStatements; both return the new data. If we leave it for sometime less than 45 minutes, the new data is then returned by both statements. Similarly, if we set the statement cache size to 0, the newe data is returned both times. We're closing the DB resources, (and in the right order: ResultSet, Statement and Connection)
    Has anyone come across this issue before? (From my searches it appears not). Secondly, is there a way of debugging into the WLS DataSource mechanism? I can go down as far as getting the ARRAY and no further, but if there's a switch/command line arg that I could use in the startWeblogic script that'd be great. I remember reading about a WebLogic attributeSpy, (or maybe spyAttribute?) and if I had to try the WLS driver for that I'd give it a go, but if Oracle have something similar that'd be fantastic.
    FWIW, changing the data via the oracle forms app changes the sysdate on the oracle database too.
    Variables from the debug that might be relevant:
    DataSource retrieved from jndi context of type WLEventContextImpl
    driversettings
    weblogic.jdbc.rmi.internal.RmiDriverSettings{verbose=false chunkSize=256 rowCacheSize=0}
    driverProps entrySet [EmulateTwoPhaseCommit=false, connectionPoolID=xxxxx, jdbcTxDataSource=true, LoggingLastResource=false, dataSourceName=xxxxx]
    Connection is PoolConnection_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CConnection
    weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.PoolConnection_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CConnection@5f1
    statement     is CallableStatement_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CCallableStatement (id=nnnnn)
    weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.CallableStatement_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CCallableStatement@5f2
    There is a StatementHolder too:
    weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.CallableStatement_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CCallableStatement@5f2=weblogic.jdbc.common.internal.StatementHolder@21cae26
    In the "stmts" table in "conn" in "stmt", there are the following two variables:
    jstmt     T4CCallableStatement (id=nnnnn) oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CCallableStatement@21cad44
    key     StatementCacheKey (id=nnnn)     { call my_pack_name.my_proc_name(?,?)}:true:-1:-1
    Thanks for any help that anyone might be able to shed on this!
    Best Regards,
    ConorD

    Hi Joe,
    Thanks for your reply; I'm delighted to see that you're still here helping WLS users under the Oracle banner :-)
    To answer your question, yes, we do get good behaviour when we set the statement cache size to 0. I ran a test on that where I set the Statement cache size to 0 and the initial number of connections to 0, then:
    *1)* Logged in through our Java/WLS app to a few test scenarios and saw the data
    *2)* Ran the oracle app on that DB outside of WLS which moved forward the state of the app, including sysdate
    *3)* Logged in again through our Java/WLS app to the test scenarios and saw the new data being returned from both CallableStatements
    I don't think that the initial number of connections had any effect on this, since WLS was running all the time and there was no retargetting of the DataSource, so IMHO it must have been the statement cache size.
    Where we hadn't got the Statement cache size 0, for step *3)* above one of the two CallableStatements continued to return the old data, (as if it had been told by the DB that the result hadn't changed, and it might as well return a cached result - if WLS does cache ResultSets?)
    Lastly, there is one case where we do see good behaviour even with a Statement cache size of 10:
    Between steps *2)* and *3)* above, if I untarget & activate, then retarget & activate the DataSource (to the same server/db that had just been untargetted) we see new data back from both statements on running step *3)*, even with the Statement cache size set to 10. My guess is that the untarget frees up any object in the Statement cache for collection and removes the remote DB session stubs that may be caching on the DB side.
    Thanks again and Best Regards,
    ConorD

  • How Transaction Manager work with Resource Manager, like Connection pool?

    hi,
    I'm using BEA Webloigc8.1 Stateless Session Bean/DAO/Oracle stored proc.
    but I'm not quite clear how Transaction Manager work with Resource Manager, like Connection pool.
    my understanding is that, in a weblogic transaction, a stateless session bean interact with several DAOs, and for each method of DAO a connection is acquired from connection pool. I've heard that the connection will not return to pool until the transaction commits.
    My question is that, does it mean that for a weblogic transaction, multiple connections might be allocated to it? and if multiple connections are allocated, then how many oracle transactions would be started? or multiple connections share the same oracle transaction?
    I didn't feel it make sense to start multiple oracle transactions, cause deadlock might be incurred in a single weblogic transaction.
    any help appreciated!

    any help appreciated!Hi. If you configure your WLS DataSource to use keep a connection for
    the duration of a tx, it will do that, and in any case there can be
    no deadlock however many connections operate for a given XA transaction.
    Here is the best coding form for DAOs or any other user-written code
    for using WebLogic DataSources. This is important for two reasons:
    1 - Thread-safety is maintained as long as the connection is a
    method-level object.
    2 - It is crucial to notify WebLogic that you are done with a connection
    ASAP, by your calling close() on it. We will then put it back in the
    pool, or keep it under the covers for your next request if it's in a
    transaction etc. The pool is optimized for quick get-use-close scenarios.
    public void one_of_my_main_JDBC_Methods()
    Connection con=null; // Must be a method level object for thread-safety
    // It will be closed by the end of the method.
    try {
    con = myDataSource.getConnection(); // Get the connection in the try
    // block, directly from the WebLogic
    // datasource
    // do all the JDBC within this try block. You can pass the
    // connection to subordinate methods, but not to anywhere
    // that thinks it can use the connection later.
    rs.close(); // close any result set asap
    stmt.close(); // then close any statement asap
    // When you're done with JDBC
    con.close(); // close the connection asap
    con = null; // nullify it so the finally knows it's done
    catch (Exception e) {
    // do whatever catch stuff you want. You don't
    // need a catch block if you don't want one...
    finally {
    // It is important to close a JDBC connection ASAP when it's not needed.
    // without fail, and regardless of exit path. Do everything in your
    // finally block in it's own try-catch-ignore so everything is done.
    try { if (con != null) con.close();} catch (Exception ignore){}
    return ret;
    }

  • WLS 9.1 - How to declare datasource for web service?

    If the code for a web service is generated (either a web application or ejb endpoint), how do I make sure the datasource mapping gets added to the appropriate descriptor file?
    I would like to avoid having to do this manually after running the web service compiler. Can anyone help me with this?
    Regards,
    Joshua

    James,
    Which version of Eclipse are you using? Do you have Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse installed? Which version?
    According to the docs, OEPE 11.1.1.6 (the latest of this post) supports WLS back to version 9.2.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15315_05/help/oracle.eclipse.tools.common.doc/html/index.html
    Make sure that you have a WLS 9.2 Server Runtime defined.
    Window->Prefereces->Server->Runtime Environments
    Add a BEA System, Inc WLS 9.2 server runtime and make sure it is pointing to the right place on your file system and try creating your Web Service project again.
    If you still have issues, try the OEPE forum.

  • Bug in WLS 6.1 DataSource + Oracle Pool

    Does any one has arrived to execute an Oracle Stored procedure which
    return a CURSOR in response with JDBC through the DataSource?
    It's working perfectly with WLS 5.1sp9 to 6.0sp2
    and NOT with the 6.1 (even sp1) ...
    Exception : weblogic.jdbc.rmi.internal.ResultSetImpl
    Any idea ?
    Best regards.

  • WLS 10.3.4 datasource to an Oracle 8.1.7 database

    is it possible to create a generic datasource to an Oracle 8.1.7 database within WLS 10.3.4? Documentation may not list a databases prior to 9i as supported, but can it be done?

    As you can see at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/jdbc817-100207.html the problem here is that the drivers for these old versions of the database work with old versions of the JDK too (1.1, 1.2). Weblogic 10g works with JDK 1.5+ (even I would suggest 1.6+), so they have no compatibility at JDBC driver level, thus that's why you see 9i and later as supported only. So unfortunately, I am afraid that this 8.1.7 database with Weblogic 10.3.4 mix cannot be done, and you should consider moving to a newer database version, which in fact will contain a lot of enhancements that your current db installation does not have.
