Word 2003 vs. Word 2007

Hi everyone - I've been running Office 2003 on my laptop, but since I sync-ed my Pearl, whenever I start Word it puts me into "compatibility mode", which somehow forces me to work on my '03 docs in '07.  Any idea how I can go back to using Word '03 only?
Thanks,
Susan

Hi Peter,
Can you please jot down the link to your site so I can read Snippet 82? I'm having trouble with RH7 recognizing MS Word 2003. I only have the one version of Word, but when I attempt to generate a Printed Document, I receive an odd error message that RoboHelp cannot find MS Word.
Thanks!!

  • Word 2003 w/ Office 2007 compatibility pack crashes after writing PDF

Writing PDF from Word 2003 SP3, all patched, using (most recently) Acrobat 7.1.0 has for some months crashed on my system after the PDF is written but just before the Acrobat window closes and control of Word is returned to the user. Word is hung so severely that it is not possible to close it with Task Manager. And, it happens every time, whether from a single-page document or a >300 page API document with extensive graphics, links etc.
The generated PDF is complete and valid, but has not been closed, so at this point it cannot be accessed. No choice but to reboot, after which the PDF can be accessed and is just fine. Word shrapnel (temporary files) litter the folder because it never closed properly.
Searching the net I could never find anything that sounded like my problem. It felt to me like a font issue. On a hunch, I uninstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack (which comes with Vista fonts that I've never used), and along with it, several associated Office 2007 security updates and service pack 1 for the compatibility pack.
Once again I can write PDF's without hanging Word. If I had nothing better to do with my time, I might try reinstalling the compatibility pack, its service pack and the updates one by one to see when (or if) the problem might return... but this has caused me enough grief so all I'm prepared to do is post this information in the hope that it might help someone else.
BTW - I also use Solid Documents PDF Converter once in a blue moon to create Word docs from PDF files. It also has PDF generation capability, which I tried as a troubleshooting measure. Same result. Clearly this is nothing to do with Acrobat per se.

Sad to report that a few days later, the problem had returned, so my joy was short-lived. Now it's even more mysterious than ever. Why would uninstalling a compatibility pack provide *temporary* relief?

  • RH7 Word 2003 vs. 2007

    Hi folks,
I'm using RH7 (and TCS) and have both Word 2003 and 2007

Does anyone know if I can configure RoboHelp to use Word 2003

  • OT: Problems with docs from Word 2003 in Word 2008

First, my apologies because this is probably off topic but no one answered in the officeformac.com forum.
    Now, to my question.
I often have to work with Word documents (from 10 to 100 or so pages) that have been created using Word 2003 for Windows. In these docs, track changes is turned on.
When I open them with Word 2008 for Mac (in compatibility mode) everything works okay. I can edit and changes are tracked (with bubbles at the side and all).
However, when I copy the doc back on the server (samba share) and open the doc again with Word 2003 on a Windows machine, the docs are often (though not always) messed up. To be precise, all the tables are split up in such a way, that each row of a table appears on it's own page. All the content is there, but the tables are spread over multiple pages.
I have all the Mac and Word updates installed and also installed the Windows fonts.
Has anyone had similar experiences? Any ideas what could be causing this?
    Best regards

My only thoughts would be to try NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both of which are extremely MS Office compatible, and work on Leopard. They also have PC versions as well.
MS Office on Macs has never been a really good fit, and as you are aware, support from MS is poor to nonexistent.

  • Need to see ALL files in folder when saving from Word 2003 OR Word 2013 program

Here is the issue.... A customer of mine has the need to save files in order (Communications with customers by date and time)
BUT..... when saving the file word does not let him see ALL the documents (.doc AND .docx) in the save dialog. (I know we could convert but there seems to be issues with the conversion, at least on the research I have done)
Is there a way for the Word save dialog box to display ALL the files in the selected folder?  OR is this just an undocumented feature OR a WOW we never thought of that....
    Thanks!

    Hi,
When we save a Word document, the "Save As" dialog only displays these files which are the same type as the one we are trying to save. To display other types of files, select from the "Save as type" box, but I haven't realized there's a way to show
all types of files when saving. This is just how it works so far.

  • Any Issues Upgrading from Word 2003 to 2007?

Hello. We have the option in my department to upgrade from
Word 2003 to Word 2007. My team still has some help projects in
RoboHelp for Word. Before we decide to upgrade, I was wondering if
anyone else using RoboHelp 7 (for Word) has upgraded to Microsoft
Word 2007, and if they have encountered any issues. Thanks for any
    input.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback, everyone. Here's an
update, just fyi. I loaded Office 2007 today, and seem to be
encountering one of the issues described by David Hurlston. When I
try to create a new popup, it takes a little over one minute for
the Insert Popup window to appear. Then when I select the topic to
which I want to link and click OK, it takes another 10 seconds or
so for the link to appear.
I also received the "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a
problem and needs to close" error five times in the past hour, when
just trying to add new topics. I ran Microsoft Office Diagnostics,
and it was unable to diagnose the cause of the crash. I'm using
RoboHelp for Word 7.0, Build 7.02.001. (I have the full Adobe
Technical Communication Suite with all of the latest updates
installed, and just loaded Office 2007 today, along with all of the
    latest Windows and Office updates.)
This is the perfect time for our team to upgrade to Office
2007 since we're at the very beginning of a release, so I'm going
to continue testing to see if I can figure out why it's a bit
sluggish and why it's crashing. I just wanted to follow up on my
original post in case any of this info is helpful.
On a semi-related note... I'm usually pretty good about
finding my way around in new user interfaces, but it took me about
ten minutes to figure out how to access the Insert Popup window
(due to the new Word UI). If anyone knows of a handy reference
guide for people upgrading to RoboHelp for Word 2007, let me know.
I checked the LiveDocs for RoboHelp for Word, but the version I
found currently contains the old icons I'm used to. (I'm hoping to
find some type of quick reference that explains where to find
things that have moved and/or changed icons. I found a great
interactive tool on Microsoft's site, but it seems to be specific
to Word docs, without addressing the RoboHelp-specific options.)
Thanks again for all the input!

  • Word 2003 - Acrobat menus disappear for some (not all) documents

I have a user who is having a very bizarre issue with Word 2003 and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.  When he opens some Word documents, the PDF menus disappear.  They are immediately restored when he closes the document or creates a new document.  We've tried repairing and uninstalling/reinstalling to no avail.  He uses several custom templates, but they are applied at startup to all documents.  Any other troubleshooting ideas?  Could the fact that he's using Word 2003 instead of 2007 be causing the problem?
    Thanks

More information: I just checked the version of the file I had on my hard drive, and it's doing the same thing there. However, the other similar documents in the same folder on my hard drive are not behaving this way, so apparently it's not specifically
    a SharePoint issue.

  • Paragraph Alignment and Justification different in Word 2003 and 2010

    Hi all,
We are migrating some letter templates from word 2003 to word 2010 for our system and we found a alignment problem in word 2010 (actually, it is not a problem and I think the behavior in 2010 is correct)
In word 2003, the following paragraph alignment will display like this :
"To enjoy your membership in our service center, please remit a payment of US$
    123456789.00 per annual"
In word 2010, the following paragraph alignment will show like this
"To enjoy your membership in our service center, please remit a payment of
    US$ 123456789.00 per annual"
(US$ 123456789.00 is shown on same line in 2010 but US$ and dollar amount are not
on the same line in 2003)
Although I think the paragraph alignment in 2010 is more reasonable, I still want to achieve back
the look in 2003 such that we can easily to compare results.
As in one post that I asked help in this forum, one expert shows me that there is option to set back the layout
look behavior in 2003, I guess if there are some advance settings to achieve this?
Please kindly advise to me on this.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Ray

There is a difference, but it turns out to be a "2-factor" one. As far as I can tell, "enabling an 'east asian' language for editing" is the other factor. When you create
a document with such a language enabled, wrapping of currency amounts works differently in Windows Word 2007 and later. Once created, the problem seems to occur even on copies of Word that only have (say) English enabled.
In Word 2003, having such a language enabled for editing appears to make no difference.
Whether "enabling of an 'east asian' language is the cause of the problem described by the OP, or the only thing that will result in such a difference, I cannot tell.
Here, I tested roughly as follows:
     a. back up normal.dot/normal.dotm
     a. open Word 2010 and ensure only English is enabled as an editing language
     b. create a new document
     c. Type
    " $          a"
(space, $, 10 spaces, "a", no quotation marks).
     d. Type text + spaces before that, until the "a" wraps onto the next line.
     e. save and close that
     f. enable (say) one of the Chinese languages for editing.
     g. restart Word
     h. repeat (b)-(d). This time, I think you will see that the $, 10 spaces and the "a" wrap as a unit.
     i. Save that.
     j. disable the East Asian language again and restart Word. Open each document and see how the wrapping behaves.
Here, I happen to have Chinese enabled as one of the editing languages in my copy of Word 2003 and I do not see the "wrap as a unit" behaviour in that case, or in either
of the two .doc fiels saved from Word 2010.
Here, the behaviour appeared to be the same whether I used $, £ (UK pound sign) or the Yen character symbol, but not the Euro currency symbol.
I saved my test files (including some created in Word 2003) in 2007 XML format and tried to pin down the significant difference. Per-dcoument compatibility settings
didn't seem to be involved. Changing the w:eastAsia language attribute in the following element in the styles.xml file was enough to change the behaviour:
    <w:styles><w:docDefaults><w:rPrDefault><w:rPr><w:lang ...

  • Converting pdf to Word 2003 in Acrobat 9 Pro

I am using Acrobat 9 Pro.  I want to convert pdfs to Word 2003.  I have followed the instructions to export to Word, but when I get to the dialog box that selects the conversion method, I choose Flowing, which is recommended, and click OK, and I get an error message that my PDF document may be corrupt.  This happens with every pdf, whether it is a form downloaded from the internet or a text document I have created myself.  If I try to convert to RTF instead, it makes the "conversion", but in doing so, it creates a file containing an image that is not editable -- it does not create a plain text, editable file.
Is the problem that I am using Word 2003?  Word 2003 is not on the list of file formats to which the pdf can be exported, but when I get to that screen, I choose Workshare PDF in Word (which I believe I read somewhere is the correct choice for conversion to Word 2003) as my selection and it gets me to the "conversion method" screen (which gets me to the corruption error message). Again, even if I choose rtf, I do not get an editable document.
    Any ideas???

    Something to try -
    Export the PDF to RTF.
Open the RTF file with Word Pad.
Save As (perhaps to a new filename -- 'something_bis.rtf')
Open this file with MS Word.
Not particularly surprising that the PDF you posted behaves poorly when 'worked' with Acrobat.
It is an output of Ghostscript.
Compounding the awkwardness of export is the fact that the PDF is not a Tagged PDF.
A significant raison d'etre for Tagged PDF is to support export of PDF content to a word processor application.
    Be well...

Sorry to take so long getting back to you - ill health is a

The fact that the message refers to an invalid argument or

uncheck each in turn until you find the offender.
Also check what Office updates were applied just before the

  • J6480 not printing to word 2007 or word 2003!

Relatively new J6480 AIO will not print a word document from  Word 2007 or 2003 version. All other forms of documents from the office suite can be printed  i.e. Excel, power point, microsoft pub. etc. Even pdfs. Any suggestions?

Don't know if you can still update your WORD, but this sounds like a common WORD problem, though I have not heard about it with 97. I assume you get the same result if you print to paper, always a good check. If so, then start looking at WORD.

  • Issues with 'Rounding' function (Word 2007 issue? Works in Word 2003...)

My colleague (using Word 2003) and I (using Word 2007) are working on a change to a template where we include a formula that has the function called rounding.
She (2003) is able to preview the pdf but I (2007) am getting error message: : oracle.xdo.parser.v2.XPathException: Extension function error: Method not found 'round'
All other settings that we have appear to be the same (same config file, same java version, etc)
Does anyone know if there are some changes to Word 2007 that are causing this? And, any ideas on how to resolve?
    Thanks for the help!
    Background:
-The function is designed provide a total weight value: each individual weight value, multiply by a factor of .80, round up, and then added together to get a total amount.
-Because we also show the individual weight values on the output, (also multiplied by the factor of .80 and then rounded up), we need the factor and rounding to happen before the sum).
The entire set of functions for the total weight value is:
    <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum',0)?>
    <?for-each:LIST_G_CONTAINER_NAME1?><?for-each:G_CONTAINER_NAME1?>
    <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum', xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum')+ xdoxslt:round((GROSS_WT*0.8),2))?><?end for-each?><?end for-each?>
    <?format-number: xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum');'9G990D00'?>
    space
    <?WEIGHT_UOM_CODE?>
Error when attempting to preview the pdf after uploading an xml file:
: oracle.xdo.parser.v2.XPathException: Extension function error: Method not found 'round

    Hi,
I took my original file (didn't have the round functionality) and Word 2007 and did the following:
    1) Tested with xml to ensure that there are no other issues - was able to preview successfully
    2) Added the function you suggested: <?xdoxslt:round(1000.98978,2)?> and saved the change
    3) Tried to preview using the same xml and got the same error message about rounding
I can't test on 2003 because my colleague is not working right now (she is the one with that version installed). I will try on 2003 later today (but I am guessing it will work for her because the other rounding function works for her).
Thanks for any other ideas about this.

  • Do you know if it's possible to generate Word 2003 files from RoboHelp if we're using Office 2007 and RoboHelp 2007?

Do you know if it's possible to generate Word 2003 files from
RoboHelp if we're using Office 2007 and RoboHelp 2007? We are
thinking of upgrading, but have customers that would still require
Word 2003 formats because they won't have 2007 installed.
    Thanks!

    Hi NewtoRobohelp
Unfortunately I don't have Office 2007 in front of me to test
with. But I'm thinking that as long as Office 2007 still produces
the same formats as 2003, you could do it this way.
From RoboHelp 7 and using Office 2007, generate Printed
ouptut. Open said printed output in Office 2007 and perform a Save
As. Save the document as a RTF (Rich Text Format) document.
RTF is more universal. So I'm thinking this may be a possible
way around it. There is also the possibility that Word 2007 offers
up an ability when saving a file to save in an older format.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Adobe Acrobat 9 still can't convert Word 2003 files?

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/673769 is a link to the same discussion a year ago.  There was no option for me to add a reply, so I had to create a new discussion here.
HAS THIS PROBLEM BEEN FIXED?  Fujitsu's pdf printer S1500 comes with a full OEM version Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard, which I just installed.  Immediately it caused problems with Word 2003, just as the above discussion link illustrates.  Clearly that's a problem with Adobe Acrobat not being able to read SOME fonts.  Where is there any bug fix for this?
Why would a customer want to upgrade Adobe Acrobat, if he can't get font support?  In my case, it appears that GREEK FONTS are not supported, which makes no sense, if the fonts are installed in Windows.  The pdf-converter knock-offs like Smart Creator PDF Pro can convert just fine -- so why not Adobe Acrobat?  Who wants to pay more for Adobe, if it is worse?
So again I ask -- has this problem been fixed?  Very unprofessional, if the answer is 'no'.
Very unproductive, too.  I spent hours on computer crashes, reinstall uninstall detect and repair, just like the posters in that thread above, from a year ago.  Businesses don't need this kind of aggravation.  IS ADOBE EVEN LISTENING?  Very unprofessional, if the answer is 'no'.

First, this is a user-to-user forum and not one for Adobe. They are sometimes around, but not on a regular basis. The lengthy discussion in the link did not apparently get folks to a solution. I did not see your handle in the discussion.
Two common errors were suggested, one the color setup and the other was font errors. Keep in mind that just because you have a font, it might not be able to be embedded in the file. That is due to copyright restrictions. The font file has to have the permission built into it to be used. That may be the case for any font that you download from another source. Most of the MS fonts are licensed for embedding.
Also, just because you have a font with the same name, does not mean it is the same. There are often multiple versions of the fonts, some that are useful and others not.
Out of the linked discussion, I have no idea what issues you are having -- there were many. I use AA9 with OFFICE 2007 and have no problems. I also use AA8 with OFFICE 2007. For AA7 I have a machine that runs OFFICE XP (2003). None of these have issues. To be able to help (if we can at all) it is necessary to track down the conditions when the problem occurs and possibly try to replicate it some. A few folks mentioned 64-bit systems in the linked discussion. The 64-bit systems have caused a lot of problems and generally require the updates for proper opertation.
From the point-of-view of trying to fix things without delving into the specfics, all I can suggest are a repair and then updates to the latest version of Acrobat. The updates should be able to be done from the Help menu, but if not from there you can download them from the Adobe Downloads>updates site.
Probably not considered much help at this point, but I really don't have enough information to home in on the problem. It may be that my copyright comment about fonts is really the issue (you should get an error message from Distiller if you print to the Adobe PDF printer that suggest the problem. As far as other packages, if they do indeed embed copyright fonts that do not have permission, then you are technically violating the law, even if allowed by the software. I have no idea if that is the case, but it is a possibility.
