Word Document Lost

Using word 2008, on a 2009 imac, a document and support document I had been working on for 2 weeks disappeared!
Both files were created in the same session and saved each day for about 2 weeks. They were reopened each session using 'open recent.' I have time machine running. Yesterday, 'Open recent' could not find the documents; spotlight could not find the documents; the documents were not in the folder; time machine had never heard of the documents; 12 000 words DISAPPEARED. It was as if the files had never been created. I've played about with a few recovery methods; autorecovery files and a recovery program but nothing except the cold hard reality of work lost.
Can anybody shed any light on what happened?

Hello Ness09:
Open your hotmail e-mail and on the left click on the drafts folder. It should have saved it there. You can also check the sent folder as well in hot mail as well least part of it is there as well. frrw

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Open Console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & next startup for clues.

lost word document.  time machine no help. suggestions?

Need more info. How do you think you lost a Word Document?
Try Easy Find, Search program, and search for *.doc*. That will turn up all Word Docs with both the .DOC and .DOCX extension on your complete hard drive.
If it is truly lost, Deleted, then you are basically SOL. Unless you do have a recent TM backup that has that file included.
As for recovering it from TM do a search for Pondini TM FAQs.

  • Lost Microsoft Word Documents

I started my computer (HP Pavilion dv6 Laptop) this evening and all my work files I had saved to the desktop (all Microsoft word documents) are gone and I can't find them anywhere.  Nothing has been changed on the computer since we got it back two weeks ago after it did a system restore on us.  This is the second time this has happened and i need the documents for work.  Can anyone help?

    Hi,
It may be worth checking that the documents haven't become hidden as follows.
From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and open Folder Options.  Click the View tab, fill in the radio button tittled 'Show hidden files folders and Drives' and click apply to make the change.
Now check your Desktop to see if the files are now visible.
If they are, for each file in turn, right click and select Properties.  On the General tab, next to the sub-heading 'Attributes', remove the tick from 'Hidden' and click Apply to save the change.
When done, open the Control Panel and open Folder Options.  Click the View tab, fill in the radio button tittled 'Don't show hidden files, folders or Drives' and click apply to make the change.
    Regards,

  • I just lost a word document on my MacBook Air. Can it be recovered?

I closed a nine-page Word document that I had just finished as was about to send it to my professor, but after closing it I could not find it anywhere.  There is another smaller document that I also can't locate.  Both documents were saved and even checked for compatability.  Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

if they were saved and closed, and you looked where you saved them to and can't find them, then they weren't saved correctly and most likely can't be recovered.

  • I'm affraid I lost my "Word" document of 30 pages. I can see only stars, squares and other strange figures. How can I recover this? Please I need help!!!

I need help! My daughter is busy with her final studyprogram. Her "word" document changed into stars and other strange figures. Is there a possibility to recover this. I hope someone can help her!!!! thanks jvdharst

Are you using the latest version of MS Word?  It’s possible you can restore the corrupt file from the last saved version or the automatically saved version.  Have you tried that?  MS Word uses a folder called Autorecover to store temporary versions of your file.  Hopefully there’s a good version in that folder.  Use Finder to search for Autorecover if needed.

  • Why does apple not allow iphone to open .rtf word documents

Before you get lost in my post, please remember this.  I simply want to know how to view .rtf word document files from my mac products.  It's vital.  So there you go, please don't get upset at me because of my love/hate relationship with mac products.....
I like my apple products in general, but sometimes it seems as if the apple programmers are so stubborn and are not sympathetic to the actual end user.  There seems to be an unnecessary PC vs Mac mindset.  There needs to be a customer mindset.
People like me have problems seeing certain .rtf word documents that are created at work with a PC, emailed out to the emplyees, and then only those that use non-apple smartphones and computers are able to actually see the original / very important word document.  I (a mac user) am one of those people who gets ostracized because I use an iPhone and Macbook Pro.  Case in point:
My work prints out the next days schedule in a .rtf word document format.  It's usually an attachment.
When I try to view it with the iPhone (the worlds most popular "smart" phone), it can't see this common and very popular file type used by businesses and government employees.  It says "An error occured while reading the document".  Wonderful...I guess I have to call my buddy with a blackberry.
When I try to view the common file with my $1,200 MacBook Pro, it doesn't know how to open up this .rtf file by default.  I have to select "Open it with: Preview, or Text Edit".  Then, a useless downloads box remains up after the computer has finished downloading...and then it sends the file to an inconvinient destination...somewhere that I have to then go on a hunt for by using the "today" option in finder.  I use the word "useless" because these download windows are always empty and instead of being useful (by actually containing the file that I just clicked to open), it then requires you to go for a time wasting/frustrating hunt.  How hard would that be?  Actually making the experience user friendly?  You tell the computer to download a file, it downloads it, and then shows the file to you in that window? Preposterous!  (sorry, I'm not trying to sound pompous...I'm just frustrated)
Anyway, sometimes the computer will attempt to translate it (a schedule with peoples names, times, and it's contained within boxes that resemble an excel spreadsheet), but everything winds up all messed up and jumbled.  Instead of reading the .rtf word file...macs resort to a lackluster attempt to translate it for you.
Maybe I am not seeing things correctly.  I don't know.  I'm just a common man.  I do know this though.  The programmers need to listen to the people and not be different just for the sake of being different.
How do I get my iphone and macbook to open up a .rtf file as soon as I select it??? I want it to behave like a PC does with respect to being user friendly and logical.  (I don't want to have to save it on a thumbdrive, go to a second computer while jumping on one leg, upload the file, brew a cup of coffee while I wait, translate it, and then send it back to my iphone so that I can view it....I'm only partly joking here)
Thanks for the help in advance.

My iPhone won't view them at all...yet.  I'm hoping that I can figure it out.
Well when I use pages to open the file on my macbook, it opens up an incorrect interpretation.  Things are mis-aligned.  Think of columns and rows.  If the original document had A1 defined as John Doe and A2 defined as a time of 10:30, then Pages in my Macbook may translate it as A1 - John Doe, A2 - blank, B1 - blank, B2 - 10:30.  The lines that are used to outline boxes wind up different lengths and thicknesses as well.
    For example:
PC word doc (original)                                                  Mac (translation)
    John Doe  |  10:30                                              John Doe     |
                                                                                                        _______ 10:30
Above is a simple interpretation, but I hope that it sort of gives you a visual representation of what I'm seeing (if I see anything at all).  Things appear in the wrong places and a one page document turns into 3-4 pages of incorrect "fluff" if you know what I mean.

  • How do I generate a Word document and a PDF from Help files?

    Hi,
I am new to RoboHelp HTML, and am using version 8.  I updated some Help files, and now I want to generate output.  Here are my questions/ or the process I used:
To compile the help, I clicked Generate Primary Layout.  Is this correct?  I noticed that the date stamp on the xpj file has not changed.  The date is still from many months ago.  (Why is that?  Should it show a recent update date?)  However, the files that I updated do reflect the dates when I made the updates.  These include art files, an hhp, and htm, js, ldb, pss, cpd files.
To generate a pdf, I clicked Generate PDF.  I was not able to generate the PDF at first, but then, I enabled macros in Word 2007 (Trust Center Settings > Enable all macros...and clicked the checkbox, Trust access to the VBA project object model), and clicked Generate PDF.  At the end of the generation, I got this error in Word: Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  The info you were working on might be lost.  Word can try to recover it for you.  I closed the dialog and Word generated several blank documents.  Microsoft Office Diagnostics was run and found one problem and corrected it.  Despite the error message, a pdf was generated.  (If you could give me any insight on why I got the error messages, that could be helpful to know).
How do I generate a Word document?
    Thank you!
    Erin

    Welcome to our community
Note that RoboHelp is capable of creating a variety of layouts. WebHelp, FlashHelp, AIR Help, Microsoft HTML Help, JavaHelp, Oracle Help, ePub and more.
Any of these layouts may be nominated as the Primary layout. So when you generate the Primary layout, you get whatever has been configured as the Primary layout.
Only certain actions will result in a change to the .XPJ file. The actions are indicative of major changes to the project. So I wouldn't fret the fact that the date time stamp wasn't updated.
Indeed the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe is what you use to create PDF. Generally what happens is that RoboHelp creates a Microsoft Word document as an intermediate file type, then creates the PDF from that. As you might imagine, there are a host of things that can go wrong during the process. I might suggest that you first get a Word document to generate cleanly. Then once you do that, focus on PDF. I know that I typically gen a Word document and stop there. I just open Word and use Word to create the PDF.
If you look at the properties for the Printed Documentation Single Source Layout recipe (View > Pods > Single Source Layouts then right-click the Printed Documentation layout and choose Properties) you will see that PDF, Word or both are options at the top of the dialog.
Hopefully that gives you a nudge in the right direction.

  • My Canon MP620 just stopped printing text: it can print photos etc but when I send a word document (with a picture) it only prints the picture. Any ideas?

    Hi Everyone:
I have a  Canon MP620 printer connected directly into my Airport base station. So far it has worked perfectly - I can print any type of document over the network from my MacBook Pro.
Yesterday something weird happened. I have a resumé (as a word document) I was always printing but this time all that was printed was a photo and no text. I did a print preview and it looked fine. I converted to PDF and nothing was printed. I then created a brand new word document and again nothing was printed. I have no problem with images but for some strange reason no text  can be printed. All that happens is that the paper goes through and comes out blank.
    Any ideas?????
    Thanks a lot in advace!

    Hi,
Tried all the cleaning programmes and it still will not print...I am lost.

  • What does 'My Passport for Mac' back-up?  Does it include my Word documents for example?

If I lost everything, would My Passport be able to reinstate my MacBook Pro in it's entirety?
It does not look like it contains much; therefore I am worried.
I have lots of data on my mbp, namely, Family Tree Maker software (from Ancestry.co.uk).  It contains all my tree data, and lots and lots of Microsoft Word word-processed documents, eg, vast type-ups of Wills etc.  They take ages to translate and I would hate to lose them.  I also have lots of saved info downloaded from the net, e.g., photos and census stuff.  Whilst I can see the FTM.app, I cannot open to see whats inside.  I have 2 Trees on my software, but I can't see if they are in there for me to re-open from My Passport.
If my whole mbp is in My Passport, I can't see it.
If all the above are backed-up, if I change as much as a DoB on a Word document, will that document then be backed-up with the changes?
Quite basic questions for you Apple folk, but the answers would help me and others a great deal.
    Thank you.  Helen
My machine is: mbp, mid-2010; Mavericks. Version OS X 10.9.5.

Depends on the backup software you use, what backup strategy you implement, and what you need to backup. Where you will start at this point also depends on what you may have already backed up to the Passport and if you are using the pre-installed Passport software.
If you want every change you make to a document instantly backed up to the Passport, then you need the right software to do that (if it exists.) If you wish to use Time Machine that is part of OS X, then it backs up every hour but does not instantly backup a changed file. You would have to repartition and reformat the Passport in order to use Time Machine. Also, for Time Machine to work properly your Passport must be at least twice the capacity of your computer's drive. If is isn't, then you will have to decide upon a different type of software and backup strategy.

  • Export to Word, Text does not appear in Word document

I have created a document in Pages which needs a table as part of it. I need to convert it to Word for work but when I use the Export to Word function it creates the Word Doc file but the table is blank - no text in the table at all? (Other text outside of the table is created).
Apart from that the formatting is not as it should be and some text (outside of the table) is incorrectly placed on the Doc file.
My fall back up to now has been to export to pdf (which works perfectly) and email that, but that stops it being edited at work.
Where should I be looking to make sure the text in the table in pages is exported to the Word document?
Or amn I expecting too much?
I am using a retina iMac, Yosemite OSX. Thanks.

Pages v5 (any version) is none of the following:
    Word clone
    Predictable
    Professional/business grade software
    Complete
    Entirely debugged
    Thoroughly documented
Many have, and continue to report export problems with Pages v5. Since we cannot peer over your shoulder as you enter text in a table, or if you tried to make the table behave as if in MS Word, the best bet would be to drop Pages entirely and use MS Word in Office for Mac 2011 (update 14.4.7 or later). Then you will be able to stop gambling with document conversion, work in the native Word .docx format, and recover some lost productivity. Word, not Apple's Pages, is the corporate word processing standard — for a reason.

  • How do I convert a pdf to a word document so I can change/add/alter a current resume?

I need to convert a pdf to word
    how do you do this?

  • Can't create hyperlinks after converting a Word document with Acrobat XI Pro

    Hello,
    Here's my problem.
I'm making a catalog document for my company.
The document that I'm converting to PDF is made on Office Word 2013 and it's a .docx format file.
I'm on Windows 8 and the latest version of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installed.
Inside my word document I have some pictures that have a hyperlink. Those hyperlinks directionate to a bookmark inside the word document. Inside the word document, if I do Ctrl+Click over the image, it will go to the page that has that bookmark. And it works. Period.
Beside that I also have some Cross-references on the word document. Those cross-references basically are the page number from the bookmark reference. By accident on most of those cross-refrences I left enabled the "Insert as hyperlink" on the cross-reference box options. When I Ctrl+Click over those cross-references I also go into the page of that cross-reference.
After I convert the word document into pdf, I can't get any hyperlink on the pictures, if I simply click on them, like if I click on a hyperlink on a webpage or something similar, the pdf won't go the the bookmark on the page that I've set on the word document.
The funny thing is that if I click on the other cross-references I can go to the page were that cross-reference is...
I tried all the methods to convert the file in order to obtain hyperlinks on the images...
I tried to use the Acrobat tab and the File -> Save as Adobe PDF, as both uses Acrobat PDFMaker, but nothing works.
Even tried all options on Acrobat PDFMaker but can't get it. "Create bookmarks", "Add links", "Convert Word Bookmarks", "...Word Styles to Bookmarks", "...Word Headings to Bookmarks", none works....
If I try to simply print from inside Word by choosing the Adobe PDF printer (like if I choose a regular printer), in the printers options it doesn't show up any hyperlink/link/bookmark option related, so that way is definitely a no go...
To reference, on 2006/2007 I also worked on a similar project and used this method on the word document (on Word 2003). At that time I had another Adobe Acrobat version, can't remember what version was...
This hyperlink situation was without any problem. After conversion, on the pdf file, if I click on a image it went to the right place inside that pdf file...
So I'm simply lost wether it's a problem of me, a problem of Word, a problem from Acrobat... simply lost...
    I'm desperated....please, someone help me!!!

Ok, sorry for never talk since the last time, but I finally discovered why I had this problem.
I found out that M$ decided somehow to change the process of embedded hyperlinks on a image, but in a docx it doesn't get affected. Only after transforming it into a pdf by Acrobat that the problem emerges...
    I found this site http://www.pb-solv.net/2013/08/embed-pictures-in-microsoft-word.html
Basically all I have to do is "Use Insert, Quick Parts, Field, IncludePicture. This inserts the picture in the old way as a field. You can use Alt-F9 to reveal the field codes and change the images to be embedded rather than linked."
Then, after converting it with acrobat, the pdf finally have hyperlinks on the images!!!
They change this on Word 2007. As I had the 2003, at the time, I didn't had this problem.
As I said, M$ changed something, but only is affected after converting with acrobat. So, acrobat also missed something in the process. I call it a 50/50 guilt.
To bad no one ever notice this problem...

  • Oversized text and lack of pages when placing a word document (.docx)

I'm reposting this, since the last one seemed to get lost in the jumble:
When placing text from a word document (.docx) indesign only gives me three pages for a 118 long document.  Also, those pages are blank, and to access the text, I have to delete a few blank lines.  When I do this however, the text is grossly oversized.  Changing the font does not help, as even on 6 pt, the text is much larger than it should be.  Help?  I've tweaked import options (although I may not know enough to diagnose the issue I am having), changed the format of the file (.doc, rtf) nothing seems to work.
I am working in Indesign CS5.5 and here is a link to the document I am working with:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzA9ILF0ZW-aVmlCV0hvekhHYTQ/edit?usp=sharing
Any help you could provide would be awesome.
    Thanks,
    -Julian Q.

The problem is the page size. It's tiny lee than an inch wide and a bit over an inch tall. I'm not sure what you set up, but what you have now seems to have been made much smaller with the Page tool, perhaps.
Set your ruler units in your prefs with nothing open to a system you are comfortable working in (the doc is set up in Picas, now. Do you know how to work in Picas?), then create a new file the size you really want.
