Word Import - Hyperlinks with #

All:
I just downloaded and installed the trial version of RH 9.0. I'm trying to import a word document into RH HTML project. The word document has lot of hyperlinks and 90% of the hyperlinks contains # in it. (For eg: https://www.something.com/index.html#wpasder). The hyperlinks with # are not getting properly imported into RH. All other hyperlinks without a # are getting imported properly. When I checked the HTML code the href is set to "" <blank>.
Anyone had any issues like this before? If any solutions or work arounds available, please let me know.
PS: I'm relatively new to RH tool...
-Thanks in advance, arun

I am encountering the same issue in RH10. Hyperlinks that include a # for page bookmark do not import from Word to RH.

• Word import - hyperlinks work in one document, not in another

Hi all,
I am aware that much has been written about broken links after importing, but there is a strange pattern to my problem I have not seen before.
I have three language versions of one document (English, French, German). So I set up three independent RoboHelp 8 projects and imported (linked) the corresponding Word documents. English and German are no problem, but in the French project, some (10%) cross-refs are not converted to hyperlinks. The involved titles have no accents, so it is probably not a character set problem. If I update the Word link or force update, it is always exactly the same cross-refs that are not converted correctly.
The cross-refs in Word look like this:
{HYPERLINK \I " title "}
The cross-refs that do convert correctly have the same format, I see no difference between cross-references that work in RH and those that don't.
Any ideas about this?

Sometimes, but it does not seem to affect the function. There are working links with spaces at the end.
On the other hand, there are strange things like this:
I have two chapter titles named "Système de désignation des modules de fonction" and"Système de désignation des connexions".
When I create hyperlinks, then Word inserts these fields:
{HYPERLINK \l " Système de désignation"}
{HYPERLINK \l " Système de désignation "}
-> The titles are cut off in the middle, the text markers differ only by an extra space. These hyperlinks work in Word, but not in RoboHelp.

Hi,
I was downloading Skype for mac last night, and now my safari isn't working correctly (has a lot of popups and and words are hyperlinked on my webpages I pull up now. I think I have the 'DownLite' trojan but I am unsure of how to get rid of it. I saw a post in March that Linc helped with describing how to fix it, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me (because I think mine is in a different folder but am unsure how to find it). I have the UNIX shell script diagnostic scan if needed. Can anyone help me get rid of this?? Thank you for your help!

• Importing word 2004 docs with tables into Pages

I work in video production, and my clients send me shooting scrips as word documents formatted with tables. Needless to say, I was quick to discover that Pages doesn't really 'like' these documents. I can't keep asking my clients to reformat their docs as txt files for me - it's very unprofessional.
What I've found is that all the text is there, but the tables don't 'translate' (one cell tries to fit on a whole page and the text gets 'lost' at the bottom). Is there a quick and easy way to remove the tables in Pages but keep the text?
In Word, it's Alt+A, V, B, 0 (I've been formatting and reformatting scripts for 8 years!).
Thanks for your help. I REALLY don't want to have to get Office - I've read so many horror stories about 2008 (especially the excel part).

Hello,
Have you tried: Select table, then from the Pages Menu; Format > Table > Convert Table to Text?
It might be of some value in this situation.

• Mac Word 2008 - hyperlink message "Word cannot open the specified file"

I'm using WordMac 2008 version 12.2.5 and after following detailed instructions on how to hyperlink chapters in a Table of Contents to their respective chapters in a book, I can only get the message "Word cannot open the specified file".
Any ideas what could be wrong?
My OSX is 10.5.1.
The instructions I followed are pasted below and are copied from the Smashwords Style Guide: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/52
START OF PASTE FROM SMASHWORDS STYLE GUIDE:
How to create a linked Table of Contents. Consider this feature in “beta.” My
thanks to Smashwords author Cheryl Anne Gardner for sharing these tips below,
which I have augmented based on my own experience adding a ToC to the Style
Guide (woo hoo!).
By adding a linked table of contents, you can help readers navigate your
document. This is especially useful for non-fiction. Most fiction doesn’t
need it. If you follow the instructions below, the ToC should work in your
EPUB, MOBI and PDF files, but it will not work in our other formats.
First, create your table of contents where you want it by typing it out. Make
sure the text is normalized just like the rest of your Smashwords’ Word
document. Example:
Contents
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Etc.
Next, we are going to create the BookMarks. In Word 2000, 2003 and 2007, the
Booksmark function is under the Insert tab. Go through your document, and at
each Chapter Start or Indexed item, you will highlight it and then select
Insert: bookmark. Name your bookmark corresponding to the Chapter/Indexed
item and then click add. It’s very important to use the first word of your
heading you’re linking to, because later on, when you add the hyperlinks,
Word displays the bookmark shortcuts in alphabetical order. With many
bookmarks, I found many of my bookmarks weren’t labeled properly, so it was
tough to link to the correct bookmark. If you want to link to a chapter named
How to Publish Ebooks, I’d recommend naming your bookmark
“HowToPublishEbooks” to make it easy to locate. If you instead name it,
“publishebooks,” you’ll frazzle your brain and make mistakes.
Repeat the process above for every Chapter Start as well as for other matter
in the book like index, bibliography, epilogue, prologue, etc. I didn’t link
to every section in the Style Guide, because otherwise the ToC would have
been three pages long. This is your call.
Next, return to your table of contents and highlight the word “Contents.”
Click insert, bookmark, and label this last bookmark “Contents”. Formatting
note: Bookmarks cannot have spaces or odd characters. If instead of
“Contents” you called the label in the document Table of Contents, as I did,
then when you insert the bookmark, name the bookmark “TableofContents,” one
word, or “toc.”
Next, add the hyperlinks to your Chapter Starts. In your table of contents,
if Chapter 1 is called Chapter 1, then highlight Chapter 1 and then click
insert Hyperlink. As you can see in the Style Guide, I tried to use more
descriptive labels. In Word’s Hyperlink menu on the left hand side, select
“Place in this document.” You will now see your bookmarks listed in the main
window. Select Chapter1 bookmark (or whatever you labeled it) and then click
ok. Do this procedure for every chapter and piece of matter in the table of
contents.
Final step. Now you can link back to the Table of contents. Move through your
document to each indexed item or Chapter start and highlight it. Then click
insert, hyperlink, and then select “Place in this document.” When the
bookmarks are showing in the main window, select the bookmark labeled
“Contents,” assuming that’s what you named your Table of Contents. Do this
for each and every chapter and or indexed item.
After you are done, all your links will be underlined. You will need to test
and make sure you linked everything properly. In most Word versions, you just
click on the hyperlink to test. In Word 2007, you may need to Ctrl-Click each
hyperlink and make sure it takes you where you need to go in the document.
Advice: Word has an automatic ToC generation feature under the reference tab.
Do not use this. It uses automated headings and formatting to generate the
ToC and this will un-normalize your text and cause font conversion issues in
your Smashwords files.
END OF PASTE FROM SMASHWORDS STYLE GUIDE.
I did all that as described but I still get the message "Word cannot open the specified file".
Could you help please?

This question would be better addressed to...
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/help.mspx
I think the operative phrase from that article is...
*Consider this feature in “beta.”*

• Maintaining internal word cross references in word import

I'm using RoboHelp 9.0.1 trying to import Word 2007 (docx) in order to generate a WebHelp. I have adjusted my style mapping in order generate an appropriate TOC with books and matching sub chapters, which works fine. However, internal Word cross references from the original Word document are not transformed into hyperlinks.
I have already tried/verified the following:
- The "convert cross references to hyperlink" option is checked in the RH-Word import settings.
- I also tried fiddling with the Framemaker options as it is suggested in another thread (see beneath), with no success.
- Within the Word source document I tried both options with "use hyperlinks instead" when creating cross references.
- The RH-HTML source, in all of my attempts, does not show any links in the corresponding locations.
What may I be missing here? According to another, similar thread, the feature should work and is really not that challenging:
"RH9 - Can not create ANY links in linked Word documents"
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854095?tstart=0

In my testing, I got a link in the RH topic, but it wanted to launch the target Word doc instead of jumping to the desired RH topic. I'd say this sounds like a bug - so go ahead and report it.

• When i am trying to create a report(using graph) in Word97 using Report generation Toolkit from Labview it's giving error in word import Module.vi that no such interface is supported could anyone help me out to solve this problem

Word import Module.vi is trying to call Vb project and VB components thru active X controls when it's trying to call Vb components it's giving the error no such interface found..I am using Labview 6,MSoffice97,Graph8

Hi Adam,
It seems that there have been a couple other instances of the same error occurring and the problem is a conflict that occurs with the Office 97 only. Somehow the MS Office type library has been modified and this is causing incompatibilities with MS Office 97. Have you installed any other application on top of MS Office that plugs into MS Office tools – Adobe Acrobat, Visio, Reflection?? If so, you will want to see about uninstalling or reinstalling those utilities and then reinstalling Office 97 to restore the original MS Office 97 type library.
Also, if you have a newer version of MS Office, I would highly recommend upgrading your computer. It seems that this problem is only with Office 97 and later versions of Office do not have this issue.
Thanks again for bringing this question up.

• MS Word mailto hyperlink headaches

Ive got about 100 customer supplied PDFs made from MS Word using the plug-in with about 50 hyperlinks each, some http others mailto. When you roll-over the mailto links you get the finger cursor, not the arrow-w cursor. On some machines, clicking the mailto link will spawn an Internet Explorer window with an Action or Navigation Canceled message followed by two Outlook email message forms. If Internet Explorer is already open you simply get one Outlook email form and no extraneous browser windows. On other machines the mailto links work normally that is, one email form and no browser window regardless of Internet Explorer being open or not. Out of 4 machines I have here locally in the office, 3 initially exhibited the problem, one did not. Our client has tested 4 machines at their site, all four exhibit the problem. After an entire day of testing locally to find out why some machines work and other dont suddenly two of the machines that initially exhibited the problem joined the one that did not, for absolutely no reason, none of the settings have been changed.
We can fix the PDF documents so that they work with 100% consistency simply opening the document in Acrobat and selecting Create Links from URLs is enough to over-write all of the hyperlinks with Acrobat code. Once that has been done, rolling-over the mailto links produces the arrow-w cursor and clicking the link only spawns one email form, never a browser window, every machine. The only minor downside to this approach is that the links are now subject to Acrobats annoying security warning This document is about to connect to the internet (well, duh, an email link was just clicked). Youd think problem solved and we can just move on, but no, the boss is obsessed with figuring out why some machines work with MS Word encoded hyperlinks, others dont, and some switch without warning or cause.
Just FYI: this problem does not appear to be version specific for any of the applications involved. Ive tried just about every imaginable combination of: Word 2003, 2007, Outlook 2000, 2003, 2007, Acrobat Reader & Pro 7 & 8, IE 6 & 7 and heres something curious: four of the documents were created with QuarkXpress on the Mac, they behave just like the Word docs.

The original documents were customer supplied so Im not sure what options were engaged, however, we were able to reproduce the problem internally and discovered the following:
If the link option is turned off in the PDF Maker preference, Word encoded hyperlinks still pass through to the completed PDF. These links work as described above, finger cursor on rollover, browser launch + 2 email forms on click if IE is closed, 1 email form if IE is already open, Acrobat internet security warning bypassed.
If the link option is turned on all links are Acrobat encoded, arrow-w cursor on rollover, 1 email form on click, no sensitivity to IE status, Acrobat internet security warning displays.
Based on the above observations, it looks like the link option was off when these PDFs were created and all hyperlink activity is from the Word encoding, not Acrobat but I have a hard time explaining why the four documents created in Quark work just like the ones in word, as far as I know Quark does not automatically encode URLs.

• Can I import hyperlinks in Power Point 2007 to Captivate?

I have a presentation in Power Point 2007 I imported into Captivate 6. Within the Power Point presentaiton, the user cannot navigate through the presentation without clicking one of two objects on the slide. Each of these objects is hyperlinked to another slide with in the Power Point. When I imported this Power Point presentation into Captivate, the hyperlinks with the objects did not import even though "high fidelity" was clicked. Is there a way to solve this problem?

No, you'll have to recreate those links in Captivate, they will not import.

The "&" character is part of the reserved word content.
Just like: <, &, >, ", ' to use these in an XML file you should
use:
< <
>“ "
‘ '
like: This is worth < $250K
will become: This is worth < $250K

• [CS4] Word Import severely broken/Interim Solution

As I said before on this topic,
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The Word import has gone from already rather bad to worse with one of the upgrade patches. ...
-- read this for the symptoms.
I finally found a work-around. Strangely enough it was one that has been rattling in my head for a while, but I can't for the life of me remember where I got that idea!
The problem lies in Word's Bookmarks. These are not recognized by InDesign CS4/CS5 Import filter (but they are by CS3 and earlier!) and thus each one of them creates a mis-match in the following text, accumulating up to the end of each paragraph (or possibly the next one, it's too idiotic to check for those fine details). Only at the very end of the document, ID suddenly realizes it has a few text fragments left over, and decides to tack them on to the end.
With results like this:
and yes, these text fragments belong somewhere in the middle of the document! Even worse, here you can see it's text that's been displaced, but it also happens with pure text formatting. Bye-bye smooth text import, hello Mr. Angry Client!
I reported this issue to Adobe "Support" (hum hum), complete with test documents, and got the quite unexpected answer that it was unrealistic to expect "perfect import" because, well, my page size was different in InDesign, my margins were different, the paragraph spacing doesn't work the same as in Word ... so it was no wonder the text was "not the same after importing".
Ahhhh ... now I got that out of my system: the solution is to remove all Bookmarks in the Word file prior to importing. For Windows, you can make a small VB Macro:
Sub KillBookmark()
While ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Count > 0
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks(1).Delete
Wend
End Sub
but for OS X you have to take the manual route: go to menu Insert, select "Bookmark", point to one, select "Delete". Repeat until bored to death.
Now that I have done the work Adobe programmers should have done (that is, finding out what the d*** problem actually was) and present them with a Ready-to-Implement Solution (revise the code that handles bookmarks): WHEN WILL THEY FIX IT!?!?
Please don't say "CS6". I'm still on CS4, and since it got broken in that version, I must insist on a fix for CS4.

[Jongware] wrote:
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Just where did you send the report and test files? There's no way to attach files to the bug report form, so were you talking to some contract script-reading idiot who passes himself off for tech support these days, or did one of the engineering team actually get back to you and ask for the files? I suspect not the latter, and I can offer some suggestions for whom to email. In fact, I think I may put a bug in someone's ear now.
Customer support, by e-mail. They *did* ask for files and I sent a whole bunch of them, original Word files, ID files to show how they got imported, and even separate screen shots of the problem pages with circles highlighting the broken parts.
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
As far as getting a patch for CS4, it's always nice to see a romantic dreamer.
But Adobe broke it in CS4. I noticed it, working with CS4. I complained about it after noticing it in CS4, and I filed a customer support case (w/due documentation) for my version: CS4. It's Adobe's own fault, as they have such a bad customer support service that it cannot readily respond to complaints about the current version!
Sorry Peter, this has been discussed before extensively, and Adobe never looked into it before. Remember me asking if this was ever solved in CS5?
If you haven't escalated your case with customer support to a manager and then that manager's highest-level manager, like the DIRECTOR of customer support, that's a good thing to put into action. From there, insist that the case goes to the highest-level manager or DIRECTOR of technical support, so you can register it as a bug that will get attention, and at no charge to you for the tech-support call.
Allt this might just be a way to put makeup on an ugly and unchangeable situation, but, since you've already invested so much effort, why not give it one more try by depositing your investment on the highest-level person's desk?

• [CS4] Word Import severely broken

(Not a question, rather an observation...)
The Word import has gone from already rather bad to worse with one of the upgrade patches. Two major nuisances that don't seem to have been present from the initial version (based on "we'd surely have noticed this earlier"; they also are definitely not present in CS3!):
Random paragraphs are cut off at the end, continuing on the same line with the next paragraph. The cut-off part appears at the very end of the imported text -- including its hard return. So when I see some stray words at the end I know I have to scan the entire document by eye to find where they came from. Entirely random -- reading a same file twice, or on a different computer or platform, will have the same error but on a different place.
Importing a Word document no longer reads text point size correctly. Sometimes entire paragraphs are in the wrong point size -- at random, not simply using the wrong style or something like that. This is extremely bad, as my firm relies on point size for proper automated formatting.
Rather random -- some paragraphs will be wrong on other computers, some are wrong at random.
This is not limited to one platform; all our computers, Mac and Windows, Leopard, Snow Leopard as well as XP (SP3) will all import a certain file with these errors. Of course all systems are fully patched up to 6.0.4.
It's also not limited to .doc files. Saving the file as .rtf has the exact same symptoms: in Word, all is fine & dandy, in CS4 the text and formatting gets garbled.
A working kludge is to import suspicious documents into CS3, save, open in CS4 and go from there. Hardly a solution.

[Jongware] wrote:
I found that a troublesome document keeps being troublesome ... saved as .doc, rtf, or docx. At any time, something or the other goes wrong with the very same document: cut off bits and pieces of text, footnotes that go haywire, formatting out of whack, text cut off immediately following a table ... And so on. So as soon as I see it happen on a particular doc, I import it into CS3, save, open that in CS4 and copy the text out of it. No problem anymore.
I filed a bug report to Adobe Tech services. Sent one of my Word docs with it, along with a CS4 file showing the problem of bits of text coming in at the end. They went over those files for a week and reported back "The change in text runs is because (a) the page size and margins of your Word file do not match that of your InDesign file, and (b) because of different layout and formatting options, the text may not run the same even if so." That made me laugh. Until I cried.
Thanks for the CS3 solution.
The mismatched margins issue sounds bogus to me. If stuff shows up at the end of file, out of sequence, it's most likely because the particular version of Word in which the original file was created got confused about managing incremental edits, and the file was "fast saved," which keeps the file content and changes in chronological order of creation, and uses pointers to mark what's added and what's to be deleted or ignored. Some versions of Word were so bad at this that even Word itself couldn't interpret the mishmash when opening a fast-saved file of its own.
A good practice that I don't recall seeing mentioned on these forums is, if possible, to make sure to save the Word file to a new name in Word, before converting or placing it in InDesign. Just as InDesign does, saving to a new name reorders the file content and cleans out the spaghetti pointers. I believe that InDesign's spaghetti doesn't go bad so often as Word's, but it's always a good idea to save to a new name periodically. It's possible that some problems that affect exchanging INX files are related to the reliance on pointers to keep a file in order.

How can I exchange my pc created documents on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with my mac and my Pages, Numbers and Keynote created content with my pc? I need to create and edit and exchange between both types of operating systems.

Your Windows system will not open any Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents. No applications exist for Windows that can open those formats. You will need to export your documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats, respectively, before you'll be able to view and edit the documents on your Windows system. The iWork documents can natively open Word, Excel and PP documents, though there are limitations on what can be imported (for instance, Numbers does not support all possible Excel functions). Consult the documentation for the relevant iWork application for details on importing and exporting.
If you are asking how to get the documents from one system to the other, then there are several ways to do that, including file sharing, using an external drive (hard drive, USB flash drive), or emailing the documents to yourself. Which would be best for your situation I can't say without more details about your usage.
