Work flow? Kona Card?

I am about to capture footage from DVCPRO HD tapes shot 720p/24p with three cameras: Panasonic VariCam, HVX 200 (using P2 cards exported to 2 40GB G-Drives) as well as the HDX 900. I will be editing a short demo tape of about 10 minutes in length. Can I import all of this footage using with a firewire cable straight in to my MacPro without the use of a Kona Card? The final short is not meant for broadcast, yet I do want it to have a professional quality. I have FCP 5.1 loaded and I'm working with one 23" cinema display. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Yep....no Kona card needed. Varicam captures via firewire, P2 footage imports from an external drive.
Click on Underdog to get to my Blog about working with these formats. I am in the middle of my third such broadcast documentary that utlitizes mixing Varicam and HVX footage.

  • 1920x1080 23.98p to ntsc 720x480 29.97p conversion work flow

I have edited apple prores 422 1920x1080 24p 23.98p on FCP6 and I wold like to letter box it and make it ready for TV commercial ready format (NTSC 720x480 29.97p) what would be the best work flow? I tried several times in several ways, had no luck. It came out to be not so great look. Thank you
    Y.

I hate to say it, but the best way to get true broadcast quality out of that is to use a HD video card, like a KONA or Blackmagic. To do it software only is possible but quite tedious. But here's what has worked for me.
    1) Create a NTSC 24 frame letterboxed version by nesting the HD sequence in an NTSC@24 timeline.
    2) Export that as a full re self contained QT
    3) Import that file, place it on a NTSC 29.97 timeline.
    4) Use the Nattress Standards Conversion plug-in to convert 24 frame to 29.97. FCP will simply duplicate every 4th frame, so motion will not be smooth. The Nattress adds 2:3 pulldown to make the motion smoother.
Good luck. (24 really means 23.98, but I'm lazy...)

  • P2 Work flow

I feel like I’m making so head way using HVX200 at my new job. I was able to download/convert./transfer media off the P2 card 2 different ways.
    1. HVX200 camera via firewire straight to external LaCie HD and then I transferred that to an internal HD so that I could clear off my external HD and use it again to get more media off P2 card for next project. (Small projects 5-10 minutes) But when I went to move the Contents and Lastclip files they were locked. I had to unlock all the files. Is there a way around this?
    2. HVX200 hooked directly to computer where I pushed the PC/Dub button for 2 or 3 seconds until an icon mounted on the desktop. Then I opened FCS 2 and went to Log and Transfer and tried to use this work flow, but not sure if was I just working from the files on the P2 card in the camera. That is, not exactly copying them to my computer or hard drive just editing from the card.
I watched Shane Ross' Tutorial on P2 Workflow w FCP 6 and saw the icons on his desktop:
    1).P2 Card
    2.) Shuttle1
    3.) Media Drive.
Can you briefly explain what all three Icons are?
How I would I get the P2 card to mount on the desktop? Is there an external device that I need to insert the P2 card directly into to and bypass using the camera?
I know these are basic questions to many of you but I like the way you guys answer questions with patience!!!
    Thanks,

    1).P2 Card
The P2 card that I took from the camera.
    2.) Shuttle1
The drive that I copy the CONTENTs and the LASTCLIP files to. Field offloading of footage. I make folders to contain these files. All laid out in the tutorial.
    3.) Media Drive.
When you use the LOG AND TRANSFER option in FCP, this is where you import the footage to. From the backup drive (Shuttle1) to the media drive...the drive you use to edit.
When I am done importing, I copy the footage off the SHUTTLE drive onto my Archive hard drives...or LTO tape drives...whatever you archive to.
How I would I get the P2 card to mount on the desktop?
Install the drivers for the card. They are on the Panasonic site, and should be on a CD that you got with the camera. If you have a Powerbook G4 like I have, then it will fit right into the computer. If you have a MacBook Pro, then you need the Duel Systems Adapter...or you need to use the camera itself.
Is there an external device that I need to insert the P2 card directly into to and bypass using the camera?

  • IPhoto or Aperture--Which work-flow?

I have several thousand digital pics and some small video clips that need to be cataloged and managed in some type of database. I have some experience with: iPhoto, iViewMedia Pro and Aperture. I have use those applications; yet, I don't have enough current experience to help me to understand the best work-flow... I'm leaning toward the use of iPhoto and Aperture.
I need to accomplish the following:
    -Searchable Database of media...
-Keywords and other meta-data in use...
-A flexible workflow that allows me to have the most options available as the images are repurposed...
    -Maximum protection of this media...
-Do not want to ever lose the integrity of the original images...
-Need the ability to identify duplicates during import... iPhoto does this... I'm not sure that Aperture does.
I was thinking that I would need to use at least two applications... for example, I could possible use Aperture as the first stop and main repository of ALL digital media and dump things to iPhoto as needed for special iPhoto features that are not available in something like Aperture. Any, ideas on proven work-flows?
Also, I need to make other decsions:
-File Renaming. Many "experts" say that ALL incoming media should be renamed... Well, I'm not sure that's the best thing unless the new name retains a vital portion of the old name since you may have a need to reference the original file name to retrieve it from somewhere or to ID it's source, etc... What are your thoughts about renaming files?
-Dealing with duplicates... How do you handle this? Assume that you have many gigs of files from multiple locations and you want to build ONE library of unique images...
-Use References or allow the media to be managed? iPhoto and Aperture both support two different methods of utilizing your images which is in effect during import... you either import via reference or you allow the application to manage your library based on meta-data (primarily date info)... Well, what method should I use and why? Currently, most of my images are grouped into folders that indicate approximate date of the images and the source (ex: "NanCam_20061231"). Also, I will want to integrate or add to my library (no matter how I manage it) some unique pics from an iPhoto library that is being managed by iPhoto... just think of this as a collection of images with a different folder organization than mentioned above. So, what method do you recommend and why?
-If nothing has been imported, what workflow do you suggest? At the moment, I do not require the features of Aperture (but I would like to begin using it very soon), so I could start using iPhoto 6. I have some ideas yet I would rather not load the question... What do you recommend?
As I write this, I'm thinking that I should toss everything into iPhoto with the idea that something is better than nothing. However, I wanted to internalize a game-plan or work-flow that I could hang my hat on and not have to think about this so much--ideas?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert:
You might want to look at The DAM Book by by Peter Krogh. It's essentially the bible among professional photographers for managing image files. It can answer you questions.
For me here's my workflow (I use both iView MediaPro and iPhoto):
1 - upload each shoot immediately to a folder on the desktop.
2 - date and name that folder: 01/30/07-Disneyland trip
3 - put that folder in with my other source folder and import into iView.
4 - batch rename those files with the international date format and brief description: 2007-01-30-Disneyland trip-001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc.
5 - import that folder into iPhoto giving me a roll with same name as the folder and file names that will sort and search chronologically.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • FCP Kona Card does not get input from FCP??

Kona card LHE. Had it working just fine but I did something goofy and the Kona control panel does not get an input from FCP. Open to any and all suggestions.
    Thanks
    John

but I did something goofy.........Open to any and all suggestions.
Figure out what you did goofy and then do the opposite.
Seriously, what have you done to troubleshoot this? There's any number of goofy things that you could do that may result in this issue. I'd start with reading the Kona manual and the rather extensive part in FCP about external monitoring.

  • Better work flow for final audio mix

    Hi everyone,
I just finished a 20min documentary shot on miniDV. I did the offline cut on my Powerbook G4 then took it to a post house for online and recording the narration and final mix.
They exported my project to Pro Tools for the audio work. Evidently, when exporting to PT, all my level settings and audio transitions are lost, and we had to re-mix everything from scratch.
Is this the typical work flow? This is my first paid gig as director/editor, so I'm new at this. But it seems quite ineffiecient.
Is there a way to export my audio with all my audio settings intact? or at least the level settings. That way, the mixing engineer can fine-tune my rough mix rather than re-mixing from scratch. I'm wondering because I'm cutting another 20min piece where the audio mix, as rough as it is, is quite intricate, and I'd hate to have to re-do it all in PT.
I suppose one way around this is to work with Soundtrack Pro. But I'm living in Vietnam, and the post houses/recording studios all use Pro Tools.
    Thanks.

When we send out audio for sweetening we export the show as an OMF 2 file. This allows the PT folks to start with your exising clips and settings and then change them accordingly.
From FCP you select your sequence and goto file>export>Audio to OMF. We usally give them a version with transitions and one without selectable on the export window. Once the OMF file is created you then image to a disk and hand it over. In return, they will give you bavk an OMF file which you reimport into your show and sync with your show. If your show starts at the 01 hour mark, start the show with one frame of bars and tone. Then have your show start two seconds later. This will make it easy for you to match back up. Also, you should give them a QT of the show with the same one frame of bars and tone for a visual reference for them.
    Hope that helps.

  • Anybody got a better work flow for backing up multiple shoot day projects?

Many of my projects are shot over multiple days. I import media at the end of each day and back up the event to another drive before deleting media from cameras/cards. So on day 2 I have one of three work flows for updating my back-ups.
    1. If I'm feeling lucky. I delete the previous back-up project from the back-up drive. And then make a new copy of the original event and add the date to the title after the word copy.
    2. I make a new copy of the event to the backup drive and date it. When it's done copying and been verified I delete the back-up event from the same back-up drive.
    3. I've just started copying new clips from the original media folder in the original event to the back-up project. It's more work keeping track of all the newly added media files and there is more chance of making an ommision.
Anybody got a better work flow for backing up multiple shoot day projects?

    What you need:
You will need two identical external drives and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. CCC is free. The drives could be USB 2 if all you are doing is backing up. If you plan on editing with the drive(s), you'll want firewire. Each needs to be large enough to contain the raw card contents for the duration of your gig.
    The Process:
At the end of the first day's recording, connect the two drives to your computer (if firewire, daisy chain them / if USB, you'll need two USB 2.0 ports)
On the first hard drive (Drive 1) create a folder - call it BigDealLecture
Inside of BigDealLecture, create a folder and use the nameing convention  "BDL_Date_card number for that day" - so if you used 2 cards today, you should create BDL_2012-02-15_01 and BDL_2012-02-15_02
Attach your card reader or camera to the system.
Lock the cards so they can not be erased
Insert Card 1 into the reader
Select ALL contents of the card and copy them to the folder you created for the first card for today
When it is complete, eject the card, insert card 2, copy its contents to the folder for card 2
    eject the card
Launch CCC and do a clone of Drive 1 to Drive 2. You can set it to do a complete block by block clone or an incremental backup. Either will work.
When finished cloning, test a random sample of the clips on both drives to make sure they work.
When satisfied the copies work, put Drive 2 in the hotel safe.
Put the Drive 1 in a place where you can grab it if there is an emergency in the night and erase the cards to get ready for the next day.
Take Drive 1 with you to the lecture site the next day.
    Rinse and repeat daily.
When the conference is over, send one of the drives via FedEx or some other same day service to your office. Pack the second drive in your bags for the trip home.
A note: If you have enough downtime durning the conference between obligations, you can do the transfer from the cards to Drive 1 on site and do the clone when you get back to your room. Don't unlock and erase the cards until you are satisfied the copy/clone process was without incident.
    Have fun.

  • Canon 60D work flow

I have just purchased the Canon 60d and would like some advice on editing work flow. Right now I have not upgraded to fcp 7. Would this make a difference when using the tape-less workflow? How about a RAM recommendation for DSLR HD editing? Any other advice that might help me ease into editing footage from this camera.
    Thanks

FCP 7 will give you more options with ProRes. Proxy, LQ, 4444 in addition to SQ and HQ available in FCP 6.
Be sure to copy the entire card to your hard drive when transfering your content.
Don't edit the native H264 files, convert to ProRes LQ or SQ is good enough.
RAM isn't an issue so long as you have a minimum of 4Gb, (all that FCP can access) add more if you run a number apps at once.

  • Old AJA KONA card into new Mac Pro.

    Hi all
At the company where I am doing some editing, there oldest suite was run on a G5. Suddenly it started to turn itself off. After taking it into an apple store for repair they quite quickly turned around and said "This is an old G5 we can't repair it, but we will replace the machine with a new Mac Pro, for the price of the repair". Great!
However the the KONA LHe card that it was using looks like a normal PCI interface (or PCI-X), and it seems apple have done away with this, as this new model contains only PCIe slots. Is there a way of making it work? Does anyone know if apple do a spec with a PCI slot now? Is this KONA card completely useless now?
I know what the likely answer is, just thought i'd put the discussion out there.
    Neil

Sorry Shane. I did mean LH.
I always thought the card in the machine was a LHe card, so when the G5 starting turning itself off unexpectadly, and Apple couldn't repair it, they gave us a new machine for the price of the repair, I thought it would still be fine as the card is an LHe. I didn't know that it was an older model and the earlier generation Kona Cards were PCI-X.
Hey now I know the what e stands for at least. Although in the context of this company the Kona LH card is pretty much Obsolete!
    Thanks for comments.

  • Outputting a DVCPROHD 24p project to DigiBeta (SD 60i) w/Kona Card

What's the best way to get my DVCPROHD 24p sequence outputted to DigiBeta (SD 60i) w/ the Kona Card? Is there a way to let FCP downconvert and add the 3:2 pulldown on the fly, (or with a render?) or should i export a cut 24p DVCPROHD quicktime movie to after effects, and then render out a 60i KonaSD codec quicktime with 3:2 pulldown to bring back in to FCP to layoff in an SD 60i timeline?
I want to use the method that will get the best quality downconvert and 3:2 pulldown results, since this SD digi is the final product...
    Josh

I don't know about the best way, or the best quality, but if the Kona card you have is the LH, I've heard it will do this live from the SDI output. I suspect this quality would be pretty darn high, though I don't know if anyone has done comparative tests. I think the Kona 2 won't do this for 24p, but will for most everything else.

  • Help with multiple monitors and a Kona card

I am trying to get a multi window setup but after I added the Kona card my browser keeps defaulting to the video monitor. I can access it with a mouse but is very inconvenient. How do I get FCP to ignore that monitor which is being driven by the Kona card??
    Thanks
    John

I think I have it worked out. I put the Kona card in "input passthrough" mode and all seems to work just fine. I had it in MacIntosh desktop and that was causing my problem
If any other suggestions I am sure open to them.
    Thanks

  • Sharepoint Foundation Can not update External List by Work Flow

    Hi
I try to update External List by other list Work Flow, in Sharepoint 2010 Foundation.
    Here is the manual:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff394479(v=office.14).aspx
But it fails , and the error message is “The
workflow could not update the item in the external data source. Make sure the user has permissions to access the external data source and update items.”
Is there some limited in Foundation?

With no Secure Store in Sharepoint what we ended up doing was creating a new external content type, adding a new connection and picking a connection type of .net type instead of sql.  This means we needed to create a .net app as the go between but within
.net we had all the usual tools for connecting to sql without permission issues.

This means that you have wrong username/password entries in your configuration files. Please recheck them and then things should be fine...

  • Triggering a sub work flow for multiple users at same time.

I have a scenario in which I have created sub workflow as an activity for approval process. This sub work flow should be triggered for multiple users at the same time and their decison is independent of each other.
This is like creating multipe instance of the same sub work flow and then the sub work flow runs indepedently as a new work flow for each of the approver and the process is completeded for approver independently.
    How can this be achieved?

    Tyr to do like this,
    1. First include the subworkflow in the main workflow template.
    2. Now include standard Block Step in the main workflow template.
    3. In the block select the block type as ParForEach.
    4. Before doing the 3rd point make sure that all the agents for whom you want whom you want to initiate the workflow, populate them in a Multiline conatiner element.
    5. Once completing 3rd and 4th points open the block step under the tab ParallelProcessing  assign the multiline container element name in the   for e;g if the multi line container element name is COSTCENTER then do the binding like below. the conatiner element COSTCENTERLINE is created by default once you include the multi line conatiner element under parller processing tab.
    &COSTCENTER[&_WF_PARFOREACH_INDEX&]&   -------->     &_COSTCENTER_LINE&
Now assign the agent of the subworkflow as COSTCENTERLINE , imean if suppose you have 3 entries in the internal table then three separate and for three different agents the workflow is instantiated.
