[WORKAROUND] Can only boot after exiting EFI Shell

Hello there, What happens is  when I boot, this is an EFI, if I boot directly to GRUB I get the menu then the messages:
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
Then is just stops. There are no more messages or any thing. The only way I have found is to boot into EFI Shell then exit the shell which drops into grub which will then boot all the way.
I have efibootmgr set to boot into EFI Shell. The startup.nsh just runs 'exit'.
grub2-common 1:2.00beta2-3
grub2-efi-x86_64 1:2.00beta2-2
Linux 3.2.13-1
root/boot are a single partition. Filestsyem is btrfs compressed zlib on an SSD.
I hope this is clear enough.

I ran into very similar problem today, except that I'm using grub-bios.
Booting 3.2.13-1 fails at "loading initial ramdisk...", with no error message or whatsoever. The lts kernel also fails.
It turns out the downgrading the kernel from 3.2.13-1 to 3.2.11-1 fixes the problem.

  • Mavericks can only boot in safe mode

    In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
    The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
    I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
    My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
    Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.
    Here is a copy of the log. If anyone can help, I would be grateful !

    I have tried a few other tricks from the experts in the discussion boards (including removing all preference files that are non apple, remove all non apple extensions), still no way to start up the computer other than safe boot.
    I would like to try and turn off bonjour, as it seems like a MDNSResponder Error. But need a green light from any of you experts.
    I am posting the latest system log (on this one, I forgot to unplug the printer)
    Please help !!!

  • Mac OS drives no longer visible, can only boot windows.

    I have 4 internal drives and 1 external drive on my Mac Pro. Three drives are Mac OS, on internal drive is XP, and one is Win 7. At the moment I can only boot from the Windows drives. The Mac drives are not visible from boot camp or at startup holding the option button down. I know the cause, but I dont know how to fix it.
    I caused the problem while booted into Win 7. I was trying to install VS2010 beta 2. The program failed to install, and I found out the problem was that the installer was trying to access the Mac disks. I removed the drive numbers from the 3 Mac disks, and the installation worked. After I relettered the disks I was able to see them from Win 7 (not XP).
    I assume I somehow messed up bootcamp. I have no idea of how to fix this. I would appreciate any help.

    We have a BootCamp forum.
    Do any of the drives show up in Disk Utility?
    Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
    You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.

  • For Those Who Can't Boot After Upgrading To 10.5.6

    For Those Who Can't Boot After Upgrading To 10.5.6
    (and i am one of those)
    how is Apple supposed to make them able to install future fixes and updates
    once they finally acknowledge and address this horrible bug?
    will they send free bootable CDs with the updates to 10.5.6?

    What "Boot ROM version" do you have (check in the system profiler under "Hardware")? If it's not MBP31.0070.B07 or MBP21.00A5.B08, then you will need to update your MacBook Pro's firmware. To do this, you might need to connect an external display and mouse/keyboard, and then run the computer with the lid closed to bypass the laptop's monitor. Then apply the firmware patch and reboot the system. This might also be doable via "Screen Sharing" if you have that enabled and have another mac handy.
    The firmware update is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/macbookproefifirmw areupdate151.html

  • Can't boot after system update: unknown filesystem type

    After running a system update, including updating the kernel, I can't boot to the new kernel.
    On booting, grub loads the kernel image, runs/loads udev, but then fails to mount the root partition with error:
    mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'
    I have tried reinstalling the 'linux' package via packman several times, also trying the --recursive argument to make sure all my dependencies were there, and after days of googling and tweaking my system, I'm at a loss.
    Thank goodness I happened to keep a spare kernel laying around in /boot.
    Thanks in advance.

    The OP can read their partition initially though, it's only after udev that they can't.
    Also, try adding "rootfstype=ext4" to your grub kernel line. Is your /boot on a separate partition or part of your / partition?

  • Can't boot after 10.6.6 update

    I see lots of new complaints here about system slowness, apps not working, etc., but after updating my MacBook Pro from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6, I can no longer boot into OS X.
    If I do a verbose boot, I see some complaints regarding VMware's vmnet adapter:
    vmnet: Invalidating peer info for hub: 0, port: 0
    vmnet: VNetUser-IfFree: freeing user If at [mem-address]
    ... and then it goes no further. I have let this run for over an hour without any progress.
    I've also booted the install DVD and repaired permissions and the disk, but that didn't help.
    I've also booted via "safe mode" (Shift on boot), which showed an additional progress bar at the bottom of the boot screen for a while and then went back to the spinning progress circle. This too has run for over an hour now.
    Don't know what else to try at this point. Of course, I had written a presentation in Keynote that is due in an hour, and this is my only Mac.

    Sorry ... what?!? I'm not sure from where you made this assumption, but of course I keep data back-ups; and I'm not sure what you classify as a "production machine", but I certainly don't consider a laptop a production system (again: my data is safely backed up).
    If you have a presentation due in an hour, which is what your post said, surely you anticipate the ability to access that presentation in an hour, and not be beset by issues resulting from updates, hardware issues, etc, I would classify that as a production machine, because time sensitive access is a necessity. One should not be shooting oneself in the foot by modifying what is working until one is absolutely certain that it won't affect their ability to access time sensitive data. Since you are backed up, the issue presented here, is one of a machine which may need directory repair, or to be cleaned up so it isn't too full that the machine can't boot, or one of not having compatible firmware or drivers with the new operating system. Whichever, a recovery of a backup would allow one to continue as if no update had happened, it would also allow one to recover to another hard drive if the hard drive is dying, it would also allow one if the directory is too badly munged to recover data to another hard drive, but whichever the issue, you have within your power the ability to recover from this situation. To repair the directory I give directions here*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
    If it can't be repaired, that's when you have to assume the drive may be dying.
    If it can be repaired, but won't boot, that's when you assume that some driver was installed that won't work with the new operating system, and you'll have to downgrade.
    Whichever the scenario, your backup saves you a lot of trouble.

  • Can't boot after installation of Time Machine

    Hello there,
    I am not sure I am posting on the write forum here but I will try anyway.
    I have recently set-up TM to back up my system on a 150 Go partition of an external 250 Go HD that I formated for Mac (it used to be a PC format). All worked fine and I performed my first (and all the subsequent) backup.
    Please note that this external HD is constantly connected to my new MB via a USB2 port and is set to auto power (so that it turns ON automatically when my MB is on and connected to the HD - which should be constantly if I did not face the problem that I am facing now).
    Now that is where it becomes tricky. Ever since I did that, my system does not boot. I mean that I never get to the grey screen when the Apple logo shows. Even stranger, my external HD starts showing signs of activity, as if my MB were trying to boot from it. If I do nothing, I never get to grey logo screen and never reach the login page and, of course, can never use the computer (I must confess I gave up waiting after 10 minutes, but my system usually boots in 30 to 40 seconds).
    After 10 minutes, I switched off my external HD and within 5 seconds, boot sequence resumed normally (i.e. grey screen with Apple logo followed by login page).
    So now, I must switch off my external HD, switch on my MB and switch on my external HD when I am logged in....it can't be right.
    It all looks very strange to me and I have no idea as to what I should do to stop this from happening (I switched 2 weeks ago to Mac).
    Any thoughts anyone ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Julien

    Julian,
    I'm back. Yes, reformatting/partitioning will remove all data. So move what you need to preserve OFF of the drive. Below is the procedure I use.
    *_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
    For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
    Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
    For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
    One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
    It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve +at least+ double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
    One poster recommended this regarding multiple partitions: “If you do create multiple partitions (half and half would be a good place to start), make sure you use the first partition for Time Machine, and the second for your own stuff (the first one will be on top in the graphical representation shown in Disk Utility; you'll understand when you see the partition tab). This way, you can expand the Time Machine volume at any later time by deleting the second partition. Disk Utility allows this dynamic re-sizing of volumes, but volumes can only be expanded toward the end of the drive, when a volume that comes after is deleted to create the room.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1712437&tstart=0]
    Procedure
    Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
    Launch Disk Utility.
    It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
    Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
    Select the "Partition" tab.
    For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Choose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups. Ensure that the two partitions have different names.)
    Name the disk.
    Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Click "Options".
    Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
    Click "OK".
    Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
    Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups. If you chose to create 2 partitions, then select the first partition for Time Machine backups, and the second for additional files/folders.
    Let us know if this was helpful.

  • Mac Book Pro 2.13 17" can only boot up in Safe Mode

    I have a 4+ year old Mac Book Pro 2.13 Intel Core 2 Duo 17" and it's primarily been used for heavy graphics usage it's entire life. (Adobe CS Suite etc). A few weeks ago I was watching a video, Hulu, and the entire screen froze.  Since it was none responsive I force powered off.  waited a few and restarted.  I got to the Grey screen, Apple logo, and after 30 sec the screen went to all grey and no further.  Tried it several times, powering off, removing battery, resetting PRAM, all to the same result.
    Things that DO work:
    Can boot in Target Disk mode and mount the disk on another computer.  Ran Disk utility and all check out.
    Can boot in Safe mode but screen shows some video artifacts.  Light red squares all over the screen.
    Can option boot to choose a disk although see the same result as above description.
    Things That DONT work:
    Booting from CD fails at same location as OS boot
    Booting using Hardware Check Disk
    I haven't visited an apple store yet for this issue since I'm hoping to repair myself once I narrow down the problem.
    I'm guessing it's the power supply but not sure.  It does get hot so guessing something is wonky.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Been reading a little and the Mac Book Pro may not have a power supply in the traditional sense so it may not be replaceable. Hmm

  • Can't boot after update, getting "microcode: failed to load" error

    After restarting my computer, it's no longer able to boot, and just prints a continuous stream of errors. The first error it gives is "microcode: failed to load", and I looked it up and found that I should just have to install amd-ucode. Easy enough, except I can't boot. I tried booting into the latest live-usb image, and after connecting to the internet, mounting the partition to /mnt, and running
    # arch-chroot /mnt pacman -S amd-ucode
    I get the following error
    error: amd-ucode: signature from "Allan McRae <[email protected]>" is invalid
    error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature))
    Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    I'm not very familiar with how chrooting works, especially not arch-chroot, so I don't trust myself to fix the problem without breaking something. I was thinking of just putting the package on a flashdrive and installing it with
    # arch-chroot /mnt pacman -U amd-ucode-package-name
    Should I do it this way or am I misunderstanding how arch-chroot works?
    By the way, this is an issue with my desktop. startx stopped working on my laptop right before I went to use my desktop and rebooted it, so after this issue is fixed I'll be making another thread about my laptop >_> Any help is much appreciated.

    Ok, so I managed to install amd-ucode with pacstrap. That got rid of the microcode error, but I'm still getting
    /dev/sdc1 contains a filesystem with errors. Forcing check
    And then it just repeats the error message
    [60.50342] ata5.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED
    [60.51345] ata5.00: cmd 60/<long number that's formatted similarly to a MAC address>/40 tag 0 ncq 131072 in
    [60.51743] res 40/<the same number>/40 Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error)
    [60.62421] ata5.00: status: { DRDY }
    The numbers on the left just keep counting up, but the repeating error message stays mostly the same. What's odd about this error is that the disc it says it has a problem with isn't even the disc with the OS on it. When I have time I'm going to try physically removing /dev/sdc from my computer to see if the error stops.
    Oh and there won't be any thread about my laptop issues. Turns out I filled my whole HDD, which was causing startx to fail.

  • Resized partition, now can only boot using option key

    I made my boot camp partition larger and my os x partition smaller using a 3rd party program. I can still boot into windows, but only using the option key. When I look at my startup disks in OS X, only my OSX partition shows up. Is there any way to make snow leopard recognize this resized partition? Thanks!

    Hi,
    I am not familiar with that program but since it is a Windows program I doubt that it has installed anything in OSX.
    Most likely that program wasn't even "aware" that it was used on a Mac running WIndows.
    And it also might be that that is the reason for your problem.
    To run Windows with BootCamp on a Mac OSX has to establish/use a form of hybrid GPT/MBR partitioning.
    GPT for OSX and MBR for Windows.
    That also means that using any kind pof partitioning tool (resizing etc.) would have to be done best in OSX since only OSX "knows" that there is a Windows partition and can handle the hybrid partitioning accordingly.
    First thing I would propose (if not already there) is a backup / clone of your OSX onto an external HD.
    Secondly boot your Mac from the OSX DVD and use Disk Utility from it to verify/repair your OSX.

    Stefan

  • [SOLVED] Can not boot after mishap with clonezilla

    Hi
    I was trying to back up my computer with Clonezilla. It kept telling me that the drive I was trying to back up (the only hard drive in my laptop and only has Arch Linux installed on it) had a GPT and MBR partition table. I thought that this was odd so booted back into Arch Linux and loaded up gparted and it said that the drive was MBR. So I ran clonezilla again and it said about a command to run to remove the GPT if you are sure that you are using MBR so I went ahead (stupidly) and ran it thinking that everything would be ok and now I can not boot back into my Arch Linux. I just get a black screen with GRUB and a flashing cursor. I think the command that I ran was either:
    gdisk -z /dev/sda
    or
    sdisk -z /dev/sda
    I'm not too sure and I should have written it down or researched it first. (That will teach me.) I have booted the computer from a Knoppix DVD and can see all the partitions on the drive (root, swap and home) and also read all the data. I have tried to reinstall grub (install-grub /dev/sda deom the Arch install cd) but this has not worked. I hope that as will most things Linux I can fix this. Please can you point me in direction I need to go to fix this?
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi
    I have fixed it. I ran testdisk from Knoppix and let it write out the partition table again as MBR then reinstalled grub from the Arch Linux install CD by doing the following from with in grub:
    root (hd0,0)
    setup (hd0)
    Lesson learnt. I'll read and research before just blindly running commands again. Thank you all for reading.
    Thanks

  • Can't Boot After New HD + Time Machine Restore

    So a couple days ago my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard started making some weird noises and stalling out. Annoyed, I talked for a couple hours with apple tech support which eventually lead me to run an Apple Hardware Test. This test returned the error
    "Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.
    4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)"
    I scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they replaced the hard drive.
    After that I got it home and did a System restore from my time machine backup. It finished fine, but when I restarted it got stuck on the grey apple screen with the spinning dial thing.
    I called apple back and they had me do a couple things like repair disk, verify disk, and one person had me reboot into this command line mode and type some stuff in. Nothing worked. After that They had me try to reinstall the OS first from archive, and next by erasing the hard drive and doing it. Both times the install fails with a big yellow exclamation point saying that it couldn't install support files and the OS couldn't be installed.
    Any ideas how to fix this?
    I'm currently trying to restore from my time machine backup again, but I'm not hopeful.

    Here's what I got - apologies for any formatting peculiarities.
    The problem: 10.6.6 mac won't boot after time machine restore to disk.
    Further symptoms: Booting with Command-v shows several errors: usually blued and loginwindow collapse with errors from launchd. Errors will be of the style "dyld: Symbol not found: CSSMOID_APPLE_TP_MACAPPSTORERECEIPT" and other CommerceKit / CommerceCore framework errors.
    A solution: Your Framework Security library may be an older version (possible cause with Time Machine below). The easiest way to fix this is to find another, working 10.6.6 Mac, and update the Security library on the broken machine.
    Identifying if you're affected:
    1) Boot the broken machine into "target" mode - hold "Command-t" during boot until the [Firewire|http://itunesu.utah.edu/terms/images/Firewire_Icon.png] icon appears.
    2) Connect the broken machine to the working 10.6.6 machine with a firewire cable.
    3) On the working machine, the disk of the broken machine should mount.
    4) Open Terminal
    5) Run "ls /Volumes" - the name of disk you mounted should be there (in this example, we'll use "Macintosh HD".)
    6) Typing in the path of the broken machine, run:
    <pre>
    nm /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
    (this does a dump of the library, looking for the version value)
    If this comes back with the value 22457 (or less?), your Mac is not booting because it does not have the updated version of the Security library, which is required in 10.6.6 since Snow Leopard added the Appstore / Commerce framework.
    Fixing if you're affected:
    1) First, make sure the working 10.6.6 Mac has a correct version of the framework:
    <pre>
    nm /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
    For 10.6.6, this should be at least "22458"
    2) *Be extremely careful at this point* - Make sure on the mounted disk (not the machine you are working on!) run the following
    <pre></pre>
    2a) Make a backup of the broken library
    <pre>
    mkdir /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    cp /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    </pre>
    2b) Copy the working version over the non-working version:
    <pre>
    cp /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security
    </pre>
    3) Eject the mounted disk from the working Mac, disconnect the firewire cable, and reboot the "broken" Mac. It should come up.
    If it doesn't, you have problem(s) that are probably outside the scope of this. I'd also suggest restoring your original security library that you saved off.
    Suspected cause:
    It appears that Time Machine never recorded the change to the Security library after the update. If the library hadn't changed, the machine should have failed to boot like it did after restore the moment a 10.6.6 update was applied.
    Inspecting the contents of my Time Machine backups before and after updating shows that Time Machine never updated the Security Framework library - why is still not 100% determined, but restoring from it is definitely broken. Combing through the backup databases on my Time Machine disk:
    (I upgraded to 10.6.6 on January 6)
    <pre>
    for name in 2010-12-30-093337 2011*
    do
    echo -n "In backup on ${name}, version of Security library is: "

  • Can't boot after glibc update (even after a fresh netinstall)

    My main system no longer booted after doing a pacman -Syu yesterday, following the instructions at https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/ .
    I booted a livecd, rsynced my /home to a storage drive and did a netinstall today. The system still doesn't boot.
    The screen goes black after "waiting for udev uevents to be processed" appears, together with expected microcode errors.
    I booted the system with a livecd again and mounted /dev/sda3. /var/log is empty, except for a pacman.log from the install, containing no errors.
    Photo from just before the screen goes blank: https://goput.it/9id.jpg
    inxi -v7 output from sometime before this happened: https://goput.it/rmh.png

    Adding nomodeset to the grub kernel line made it boot fine, so I've narrowed it down to a framebuffer issue.

  • Macbook Pro, Can't boot after EFI update....

    Updated the EFI this morning- Prior to that update, everything was working fine. After the update, I have the flashing question mark folder of doom. Can't use internet recovery even while plugged into ethernet. What happened? Everything was going so well Apple! I'm on Lion, latest updates, 2011 MBP 2.2 i7, SSD 120g with a 750g running beside it (data doubler).

    Okay, so the disk is supposed to show up as disk0s2.
    Remember how I'm unable to unmount the drive? I force unmounted it and then used Disk Utility to repair the volume, but still no luck.
    I think the key to the problem is this new HD I put in runs at 3 Gbps. I think I read somewhere that the new MacBook Pro's don't support that.
    I think next I'm going to try swapping out the new HD in my MacBook Pro with the one it originally came with.

  • LILO can't boot after recent update

    After updating today, I cannot boot any longer. My root is on lvm and I also use LILO.
    I've tried the suggestions to boot from live cd and run mkinitcpio without any success. I've also tried reinstalling udev and mkinitcpio with pacman from a live cd and that did not work either.
    When I boot, I see the following messages:
    :: Running hook [udev]
    :: Triggering uevents...done
    :: Running Hook [lvm2]
    Activating logical volumes...
      2 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg1" now active

    Yes, I can manually mount the lvm partitions in the recovery shell.
    Here is my lilo.conf: http://pastebin.com/w0L1kgqv
    Here is my fstab: http://pastebin.com/eyvfnYpC
    Also,  when i try to update udev or linux or device-mapper with pacman, I get the following warnings:
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /bootmnt: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /cowspace: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/root-image: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/lib-modules: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /sfs/usr-share: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /repo/core/x86_64: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /repo/core/any: No such file or directory
    warning: could not get filesystem information for /bootmnt: No such file or directory
    Thanks for your help!
    [edit] for anyone looking at this post trying to resolve the above warnings, don't. They don't seem to cause problems and as far as I know they show only during a chroot environment within a live boot, so don't worry about them. If you experience issues, it's most likely related to something else, my particular issue was actually with the LILO boot loader and not related to these warnings at all.
