Workarounds for random shutdwns and freeze

The following workarounds tested on iPhone 3GS OS3.1 and iTunes9
Try this first:
A workaround (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2155949&tstart=0):
iPhone disconnected from the PC/MAC
iPhone is shut down.
Press and hold down the "Home" button for more than 10s till a USB cable and a CD dispaly on iPhone screen, DO NOT RELEASE, keep holding down the "Home" button and blug the cable, then release the Home button. iTunes will detect and recognise it and displays the "Restore" screen... so you could restore your iPhone and hopefully not have in the future any freeze according to an Apple support guy.
Second try what I tried myself and worked for waking the iPhone up from his deep "coma":
I have 3GS under 3.1 and iTunes9
1. iPhone connected to my PC, iTunes launched.
2. I holded the Power and Home buttons down for 10s
First it displays the apple, do not release to two buttons and keep holding them down until it sends a kind of flash, at that moment release the power button and keep holding down the Home buttons for 10 supplementary seconds.
The iPhone is then detected by iTunes and it displays the "Restore" icon.
You could then restore iPhone.

I've now had three further occurrences of this problem and after a bit of research have found a few things posted on a number of other forums.
One of the suggestions is that it could be attributed to a memory problem following a RAM upgrade. This made me think as I have recently upgraded from 2GB to 3GB. I'm going to revert back to the original 2GB of memory and see if the problem goes away.
Another theory is that the keyboard cable behind the battery is in some way causing the problem due an intermittent connection. I'm not convinced by this one but I think it's worth investigating.
Any other suggestions are still welcome

  • [Bug: JClient tree binding] Workaround for 'random' collapsing of branches

Hi all.. For those of you who have been bothered by a bug in the JClient tree binding model regarding (seemingly) random collapsing of branches, I have a small workaround which may brighten your day. I know it brightened mine. :)
    Anyways, here's my situation:
    - A JTree with a master VO ("MasterView", for the top) and a detail VO ("DetailView", for the 'body'), recursively bound.
    - A JComboBox bound to a VO ("TopsView" or whatever), which is used to 'select a tree'
    - When a the currency of TopsView is changed, the selected row's ID is used to build a new tree. I use my own simple synchronizing mechanism, so I can do some additional checks. I suppose you could make MasterView a detail of TopsView, but that's not really important.
    masterView.setWhereClause("ID = " + selID);
masterView.executeQuery();At this point, the tree will automatically be rebuilt.
However, based on my experiences, I figure that this is not really the way the JDev guys pictured how I'd work because there's a pretty huge bug which at some point pretty much makes the tree useless (or 'act weird' to say the least).
Here's a description of how to reproduce the bug and some of my observations. I will refer to the collection of currently displayed nodes/records as 'tree'.
    1. When you first expand certain branches in the current tree, all goes well. No problems.
    2. Next, you use the JComboBox to select another tree. (The new tree will appear totally collapsed.)
    3. At this point, you will also be expanding branches 'in that tree', 'for the first time'.
    4. After that, you switch back to the first tree.
    5. Now it becomes interesting: when you expand ANY branch that you previously expanded in this tree, the bug will surface (details will follow). When you expand branches that you DID NOT expand during your last visit to this tree, all goes well -- no problems.
Note that re-expanding a branch after manually collapsing it, does not cause the bug. The key is that you expand a branch for the first time during a 'visit' to this tree (ie, so that it has to gather it's child nodes).
    Details about the bug:
    - The problem surfaces when expanding certain branches. (See above.)
    - Effects will vary from collapsing different branches under the same parent node to collapsing the entire tree.
    - The selection in the JTree component (or its selection model, if you will) will also be canceled.
    Observations:
    - It seems that JClient was not designed to handle multiple trees (as described above). It appears that, before the newly selected tree is built, the old tree has not been properly cleaned up. By this I mean the collection of JUTreeNodeBinding objects, which continue to refer to DefaultMutableTreeNodeBinding objects of the destroyed tree. In effect, these orphaned objects continue to work their magic in the background and will influence the JTree and its associated objects in a way so that this problem (and possibly others) surfaces.
The workaround I will present below is designed to suppress this problem. It does not deal with orphaned objects in a proper way, it will merely partially suppress their functionality.
    How to suppress the bug:
    - In case you haven't done so already, you have to copy the source file of oracle.jbo.uicli.jui.JUTreeNodeBinding into your project directory and then make small modification to it.
    - On line 482 (if I'm not mistaken), you will see //if (al.size() > 0) Change it to if (!(mTreeNode.getParent() == null && getParent() != null)) Now the enclosed code will only be executed when the tree is fully synchronized (as in: the 'tree' of JUTreeNodeBinding objects has the same structure as the 'current tree' of DefaultMutableTreeNodeBinding objects).
In a nutshell, it checks whether the parents of this JUTreeNodeBinding object and the associated DefaultMutableTreeNode object are not null. Because in case it concerns an 'orphaned' JUTreeNodeBinding object, the parent of its associated DefaultMutableTreeNode object will be null. However, in case it concerns the tree's root node, both parents will be null, in which case this condition will have to evaluate to true as well.
I hope that this information will be of use to others :) and that possibly someone of the JDev team could comment on this matter. Thanks.

One question though. What exactly do you mean by 'copy
    the source file of
    oracle.jbo.uicli.jui.JUTreeNodeBinding into your
project directory'.. would I need to change the package
name of this binding, and modify the client code
somewhere to have it use my modified version? Or will
it use this local copy instead of the original one?The simplest way to go is to create a new (empty) class in your project, which is to be located in the package "oracle.jbo.uicli.jui", and name it "JUTreeNodeBinding". Next, open the source of the original JUTreeNodeBinding class and copy-paste it into your newly created class in JDeveloper.
Now, when you run your application, it will use your 'custom' version of JUTreeNodeBinding, while it will function exactly the same. You can make any modifications, like the one I suggested in my original post, in this class.
    Good luck.

  • Iphone 5 locks up and does random things and freezes

I have an iphone 5 that randomly freezes, starts apps on it's own, types when I am not typing, video goes astray when playinmg games.  I am ready to throw this thing out the window.  I called Apple Support and they said it is a software glitch.  I tried multiple time restoring from computer backup and from Icloud but symtoms don't go away.  Has this happened to anybody else?  How do you fix it@

Hi...thanks for the advice but it still has random things happening and gets unresponsive. I have backed up and restored from my computer and the cloud. Neither worked. I resorted to erasing the phone and starting as a new phone but I am getting the same random problems. For example, i open the camera app but I  can't take a picture. If I touch the escape button on the top of the phone and open the same app I sometimes can take a picture.
Forget about playing games with graphics. Nothing responds well with games.  The weirdest thing is when you launch email and the phone just starts typing random characters and letters.
I think I have to bite the bullet and get s replacement phone.
PS i use a lifeproof case and the problem occurs randomly with or without the case.

  • Random restarts and freezes. Just upgraded my RAM trying to diagnose new RAM as the problem but they pass Rember test.

Hey so I have been dealing with random reboots and computer freezes since upgrading my RAM. I also reinstalled my 10.8.2 at the same time I upgraded my RAM. I have a Mac Mini Mid 2011 with the OWC Data Doubler Kit and a Crucial M4 128GB Boot drive. My computer reboots every 30 minutes or so and sometimes completely freezes up. I am trying to figure out if the new RAM is the issue as I can send them back. I have ran several Rember RAM tests but the computer freezes mid test so I can not see the issue. All other times it completeles the RAM test with no issues.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

  • Date modified for random songs and videos continuously changes

Using iTunes Match and iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone 5 and iPod 2 - random songs and videos have modification dates reset; I used to be able to find newest added files by sorting by modification date and now it is entirely random.  Also, I got 40 plus copies of two random CDs on MacBook Pro, as though Match just keeps Matching and adding the same tracks.

I have the same problem. Mac OS 10.5.3. Intel iMAC core duo. When I upgraded to iTunes 7.6.2 all of my playlists went grey. Both Music and Movie Playlists.
I installed the latest version of quicktime which did not fix the video playlist greyed out issue as noted in other areas of the support forums.

  • Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes

ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
    - Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
    - Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
    - Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
    - Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
    - Testing RAM with memtest
    - Running Disk Warrior
    - Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
    - Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
    - Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
    - Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
    Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
    Processors: 1
    Cores: 2
    L2-buffer: 4 MB
    Memory: 3 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version: 1.9f4
    OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.

    Hi Kguy,
    Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
    Hope this helps clarifying

  • Dreamweaver CS4 for Mac crashes and freezes

I couldn't find other postings related to this, but if I
missed something, please let me know! I've been working with CS4
for about two weeks and have intermittent success.
After I first installed, I noticed a problem within
Dreamweaver where I could work within the application, but coudln't
switch to other open apps. As soon as I tried, my computer would
freeze, forcing me to do a hard reboot. Because I was working on a
deadline, I stopped using CS4 and went back to CS3 for a few days.
I then went back to CS4 to see if I could figure out what was
wrong, and wasn't able to replicate the problem. It worked great
for a little over a week.
No for the past few days, I'm experiencing the same problem.
It doesn't happen right away and I can usually open a few pages and
work with them before I notice the problem . . . but after working
for a short amount of time, if I try to switch to another
application or use any of the items on the main tool bar (File,
Edit, etc), my computer stops responding. I can usually get a few
quick commands in, like saving the file by doing a ctl-S, before it
freezes completely, and then am left having to do a hard reboot.
And every once in a while, the application will complete
crash when I try to open a file. it doesn't seem to matter which
one, it's pretty random. I prefer it when it crashes so I don't
    have to reboot my computer.
Adobe does have a knowledge base article at
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb405911,
but so far nothing I have done has helped. I've gotten through item
18 on the list, with the exception of 14 and 15, and I wasn't
really sure what I was looking for with 16 (review the Console
    logs).
Before I do anything more drastic, I thought I'd post
something to see if anyone else has thoughts on what to check. In
all actuality, instead of taking this any further, I will likely
just go back to CS3 until I hear more about updates or fixes.
    Thanks!

Well, this is my third attempt at fixing this problem. Each
time, the application works flawlessly for a few days and then
gradually starts to freeze and crash intermittently until it
finally completely freezes each and every time I try to open a
    file.
Here is a recap of what I've tried:
    - Troubleshooting tasks (1) - (19), (22), (23), and (28) from
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb405911.
    - Reducing the display resolution seemed to work for about
two weeks, but then gradually the problem started happening again.
    - Reinstalling my system software worked for about two days.
    - My most recent "fix" was to change the configuration of my
sites within DW. Up until now, I've either been accessing files off
of a network drive (directly, not from within a defined DW "site),
or through a DW site where the local folder was a network drive.
When I copied the files from the harddrive to my desktop and opened
them in DW, I didn't have any problems. I was also able to get a
co-worker who has a brand new MBP with a fresh install test and
    confirm the same problem.
    I found this today -->
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_16644
which is old, but once I changed my site configuration so that the
local folder was something on my HD and the remote folder was the
network drive, I haven't had a freeze once. Now, it's only been 2
hours, so I'll reserve my excitement.

  • Any fix for random art and song order problems after adding new music?

If I sync my touch with itunes as a restore, all cover art, albums and playlists are correct. Once I add anything new or make a change and re-sync, random cover art is missing and random songs are in the wrong order. The only way to fix the problems is through a complete restore. Has anyone else had this problem or figured out a fix? I am using the latest itunes on a PC with XP.

A few issues, but sorry let me try to understand.
Adding new music, 'XXXX's iPod cannot be written or read'' can you let me know the number. most likely music format is not iPod Compatible like HE-AAC.
started skipping songs  - these are normally due to corrupted ID3 tags, try converting them -File-> Advance -> IPOD version or use MP3 validator to fix all songs in the library. (My Apologies, only work for MP3 music that skipped)
As for item 2, you can try Hard Reset if you like to download MP3 validator.
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

  • Workaround for slow performance and poor resolution with RED R3D files in After Effects CC 2014 (13.0)

    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/06/red-r3d-problems-after-effects-cc-2014-13-0.ht ml
The After Effects team are investigating a bug in After Effects CC 2104 (13.0) where RED (.R3D) files are very slow and the image resolution is poor, about 1/8 sampling.
The following workaround has been reported to solve the problems in some cases:
    Save the project.
Choose Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache.
Please post in this thread about whether or not this workaround helped you.

Intentionally cross-linking threads: this issue was first reported in this thread, which has an ongoing discussion:
AE 2014CC RED R3D files support broken - footages looks bad, everything slow.
The thread you are in now is the comment thread for the blog post. Please post in whichever thread makes more sense for you. I am monitoring both.

  • M8430f Desktop with random crashes and freezes

Have had this problem for about a year now. Someone suggested checking the power supply, but I think it's pretty consistent. Sometimes the computer freezes all together, sometimes I get a blue screen... It could happen as often as twice per day, or as infrequently as once a month.
I'm sure there is a memory dump file, but I don't know where it is or what I'd do with it. Someone also suggested Event Viewer, which I found, but again, didn't know what to do with.
I think some memory or the hard drive could be bad. Possibly small sectors, so the crashes only happen when those sectors are accessed. I'll add that two weeks ago I did a clean install of Windows 7, so it's not the operating system.
Any help is appreciated! I'm just trying to find out WHY it crashes.

The symptoms that you describe could definitely be caused by a failing power supply unit (PSU).  It can cause many problems that don't appear to be related to the PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot it.
Here is a guide to help you test the hard driver using the SMART diagnostics in the BIOS.
Test the memory by removing all of the modules and replacing them one at a time and booting.  Place the single memory module in the slot closest to the Processor.

  • Workaround for Chrome, Silverlight and BT Sports

I posted this in another thread as a reply, but felt it needed it's own thread. There's a workaround to get BT Sports working in the Chrome browser:
In the adddress bar type in chrome://flags and press Enter
Search the page for the NPAPI plugin
    Click Enable
Click Relaunch Now to close and reopen the browser
Go to BT Sports and you'll now be able to watch it via Chrome. (I know it works - I've just done it).
    Thanks

Perhaps so. But if people are using Chrome then at least it'll allow them to continue to do so until that time. Yes, but probably best that they know that it's only going to last until September.
They can also turn off the Google updater before that time and it should continue to work. They wouldn't have realised that, but would they want to stick with an outdated version of Chrome just to avoid switching to another browser now and then?
And maybe BT can invest some time in making their player not depend on Silverlight ... even MS will be withdrawing it at some point. Then we'd all be happier, as would Sky customers.
I'm of the opinion that I'd rather let people have the required info and make up their own minds what to do. Me too, but I try make sure that it's all the required info.

  • Droid X: random pauses and freezing (but no reboots)

This is my first Android phone.  The phone frequently stops responding to touch inputs for several seconds at a time.  It can be in the middle of typing (usually using Swype), or navigating through the Home screen, or interacting with an app.  The physical buttons always react immediately, but the touch screen does not.  Is this considered normal?  It's pretty annoying.
    I'm running system 1.13.604.MB810.Verizon.en.US, firmware 2.1-update1

Alright People There are more users out there having the issue. My guess is they are not savy enough to post or dont realize the reboots, caus eit literally only takes 30 sec to reboot, unlike BB tour. So it may not be as apparent. Also other not I just spent 3hrs today back and forth with Verizon an Moto to resolve yet again another rebooting issue with My x. And ladies and Gents this is my second x I will soon have a 3rd. My 1st had issues with in the first week, the second last about a month. Lets seee how long the 3rd lasts. I get it next week. For Moto engineer readers. My phone has 3 apps installed. One game from market ( Robo Defense) google maps and auto task. Im also experienced with both phones gps droping and having to retart phone manually to find a sat as well as screen freezing and locking sometimes to the point of needing reboot. My 3g hot spot sometimes needs a reboot to work. It seems to get caught in a loop, I cant remember what happens exactly but a reboot is needed to resolve. What else, oh I use the phone costantly more than most I travel aalot and its constantly charging so I can be intouch with clients via email, sms, web interface as well of a course a phone voice. The phone sits in a silicon case for protection and I have a holster (leather) to put it in. Its in sometimes the phone gets warm. I also have noticed when the phone is just running sys files the ram is way to high and this concerns me maybe its overheated possibly cap issue not really sure. If there is a developer that cares about makin those that are having continuing issue just reply. I also apreciate u increasing the vol settings cause they are horribly low. Also not u should increase the alarm volume as well as many users use there phone as an alarm clock these days, if thats not already adressed under speaker volume and ringtones. Thanks

  • 4s random crashes and freezes, even with DFU restore

I have a 3 week old 4s and have since had to take the phone to Fresno genius bar three times. My phone has had random crashes (preferences, mobile safari, messages, app store, words). Each time I was told that a DFU restore would fix this problem. The last they did was on Dec 21. It is now Dec 27 and my phone has crashed 6 times with the last one requiring a hard reset as the phone froze while using Safari. I understand that phones are computers and it will crash at times. However, this is a 3 week old phone, it has been less than a week from a full restore, and there does not seem to be a pattern on which apps crashes. I also clear my unused apps (double click home button and clear apps on the background) every day, so it's not like memory is tied up. And besides, a 4s shouldn't be concerned about that, right. I also have several friends that have 4Ss and have had not had this problem to the extent I've had so far? Have any of you guys experienced this?

  • When i click a bookmark, it wont load and freezes

after clicking on a bookmark, it indicates waiting for down load and freezes, every time now but only in the last 18 hours as of about 9:00 pm Pacific time.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • Jerky Vioeo 4 few seconds and freeze it while play audio ok..

Thank all for ur input. The main problem is when I grab video clips from the desktop to the project window and play back on monitor of CS4, I get jerky video for few seconds and freeze it while playing audio perfectly up until to end of the clip. I have tried the same thing with APPro 1.5, the same thing has happened. When I play the SXS card thru Sony XDCAM EX1 on the Televion, I could not find any jerky video there. I have set the XDCAM EX1 and PProCS4 for PAL/HQ/1080i/25fps. Any other suggestions to try out.. Thx

I assume that the "desktop" is your C:/  drive and assume that is where you also run your Adobe application from.
Thats asking for exactly the issue you are experiencing.
PPRo needs multiple drives and setups to run correctly.  Check the setup and specs required for the application.
