Writing to DVD

OK, here's the problem. I produced my first 40 minute long presentation of still pictures, mixed with six short movie clips. There is a soundtrack running in sync with the pictures, going to mute when the movies run. I finished the presentation and copied the entire show to DVD, but it won't play on a DVD player for TV. So, I asked the local Apple store for advice and they said Export it to QuickTime and then to iDVD. So, I tried that but everytime it got to the movie clip, it Quit. So, I tried changing the slide and transition time. This time, it took ages to start converting and when it got to the movie it copied the entire movie and not just the clip.
SO I have a dilemma, I'm needing to write a DVD of the program so I can play on any computer - even if it doesn't have KeyStone. Also, I want to write a version to DVD to play on TV. Also, I want to play this in England which requires a Region 2 DVD write.
Can anyone help me through this mire? I'm leaving for England tomorrow and need to get the DVD transferred tonight.
HELP!!!

Called Apple Help line and resolved the problem. The answer is that QuickTime won't import a mix of movies and slides together, therefore you have to save the slide presentation first, then add the movie element using iMovie.

  • Writing data DVD sometimes results in lost data.

    Hi there
First a bit of background on the Mac in question. We have an G5 running Leopard (10.5.8) here that we use as a file server. Operator copy files off the servers, work on them locally, and then copy them back when finished. After a job is finished and invoiced, 'inactive' client files are writtien onto DVD for our archive, and deleted from the file server.
We have had a few instances where a DVD has been written, the session closed, and no errors have been raised by the OS – however, when going back to some of these DVDs, individual files have not been copied. The files are not corrupt, they simply have not been written. For example, A folder containing a client's publication exists, but not all of the InDesign files contained therein, and perhaps some image files are being lost that are contained within a 'links' subfolder.
I have checked the filenames of the offending items, and there are no illegal characters being used in the filenames or anything obvious that I could use to chase this problem down. There have been occasions that there have been files on the server (most of the time originating from Windows PCs) that for some reason have the permissions set as 'read-only' and on rare occasions some mac files have also had the same problem.
In my mind, if it were a hardware issue, (i.e. the DVD drive going bonky (technical term)), then the OS would report back with a writing error either during the writing phase or after the session closes, and the issue would become more and more common as the hardware fails. That's not the case.
Then again, if it were a software issue, I would expect it to happen much more often - but given that a huge percentage of the disks write OK, and none of the offending files have illegal characters, I cant see why it would be a software issue (unless it could be down to permissions errors listed above – feel free to comment on that possibility.
So what I'm really after is this: At the moment, after we write a disk, we have to view the original folder's contents, and compare them to the written DVD using 'Get info' to ensure that the amount of items in a given folder (and the amount of bytes written) tally up. Is there a good software solution that would automatically check the disk after writing to compare the source and destination folders?
I looked at rsync, but found that it only compares folders, and DVDs cannot be mounted for it to work. I have also looked at using diff, but to be honest, we are all from a design background here, and none of us have any background in command-line Unix. Terminal scares us.
So – any ideas for freeware/shareware? My searches have come up blank, and my attempts to write an automator script also came to nought.
    Thanks in advance.

I am also trying to write an automator app that handles the disk checking for me.
You may want to post your automator question in:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_technologies
Perhaps you should post this whole question in the technologies forum.  This is an odd problem.
I did find some comparision apps.  The dvd icon works like a folder. You would compare dvd icon to a folder.
    Compare Folders.
    http://download.cnet.com/Compare-Folders/3000-2248_4-10317614.html
I have this app. Looked easiest for your needs.  Not sure it would spot one character getting mangled in copied files.
The author has stopped supporting the app
    Folder Compare
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/folder-compare/id535348544?mt=12
I haven't tried, but example looked interesting.
    Kaleidoscope
Use Kaleidoscope to spot the differences in text, images, and folders.  Folder compare example looked a little weak to me.
    http://www.kaleidoscopeapp.com/
    FileMerge
The light grey entries means the files compare.  The bold entries mean the folders did not compare on these files.
It's free and part of the developer tools with xcode.

  • Trouble Writing Finished DVD

My iDVD has been giving me some trouble lately.
What happens is iDVD goes through all the normal steps of encoding audio, video and such. Then, when it gets to the Writing DVD stage, it sounds like its trying to burn but no progress is made on the display onscreen and after a while, iDVD gives up and ejects the DVD saying that errors were found during the writing process. The weird thing is, this only happens ever other time. Usually 1 in 3 times I can get it to burn a DVD properly. Same thing goes for DVD Studio Pro.
It's always when it gets to the writing stage that I get trouble.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Patrick
Can be anything from dirt to a dying DVD-burner.
    I would:
    1. Try a Cleaning CD/DVD disk
    2. Make a "Disk Image" and burn this with either Apple Disk Util tool or
Roxio Toast™ - at an as slow speed as possible eg. x1, x2 or x4
    3. Use Verbatim DVD-R disks
    4. Check up QuickTime version and iDVD version.
QT 6.5.2 and iDVD 5.0.1 is a nice combination.
Still problems my bet is - severe problem -repair shop.

  • Writing to DVD as if it were a floppy (packing writing)

I am a pc user switching to mac...
In windows, I used a program from Nero that allowed me to write to a DVD as if it were a floppy (ie drag and drop). I seem to remember is was called packet writing. Is there similar capability in Mac? Is it native or do I need a 3rd party app?
    Thanks
    bob

What is it you really want to do? Personally, I use a thumb drive exactly the way one used to use floppies. Plug it in, drag files to it, eject it. Later on you plug it in again and drag more files to it and delete files from it you no longer need. Of course, while they are pretty cheap these days (I've seen 1GB thumbs for $6), if you are giving away the disks to someone else this wouldn't be the best idea, which is why it would help to know what you are doing.
Both Windows and Mac programs use a bit of trickery to add files to a burnable disk, and the trickery is not really compatible between the platforms, so if you want to share files by way of disks between a Mac and Windows computer a FAT32 formatted drive is the better option. So, again, what is it you are trying to do?

  • Tecra S2 - Problems Writing to DVD

I have a Toshiba Tecra S2 running XP Pro SP3. It has a Mat****a UJ-831S DVD RW drive. I have for years been writing files to DVD-R and -RW simply by dragging and dropping in Windows Explorer. I updated to SP3 a few weeks ago, and now I find that although I can read original or previously-recorded DVDs and CDs with no problem, I can't do anything with blank DVDs. When empty, the drive shows in My Computer as a DVD RAM Drive D:, but when I put in a blank DVD, it changes the description to CD Drive, and when I try to access the DVD, I get the message "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function". As it should be for DVDs, the CD recording box is not checked in drive properties.
I don't know if the problem relates to the upgrade to SP3 as I did not use the DVD drive immediately before and immediately after the upgrade, but I did not have the problem three weeks before the upgrade when I last used the function. I have used Device Manager to confirm that the latest driver is installed for the DVD drive. If I start the inbuilt Sonic RecordNow software I can write to a DVD with no problem - it's just the ability to drag and drop in Windows Explorer that has been lost.
    Any help gratefully received.

  • Uknown device error while writing a DVD

Every time I try and write a dvd from dvd studio pro I get this error at the end of the session!  Any suggestions?

If you only do the build, will it complete the process? If it does and thr TS plays in DVD Player, I'd suspect your optical drive and connections.

  • Separating a long movie for writing to DVD

OK. So I spent many hours and many weekends filming my grandparents' life stories. After this, I used iMovie to piece them together in a chronological way (they weren't always told so) and added various pictures and sound clips. After spending many hours editing them, I was done.
That's when I realized that I had a very long, flowing movie. But it wouldn't let me easily separate them for different DVDs. It would seem like I'd need to make a whole new file, re-insert the image, re-edit it, re-insert the pictures, sounds, etc.
Is there any way to take a very long movie and easily break it up, saving the edits, for multiple DVD writings?
I hope I'm making sense here. It was a couple years ago I realized I had this problem and I have barely used iMovie since.
I'd prefer not to, but I could buy iMovie 2011 if it would solve this problem.
    Thanks!

I would recommend that you select your project in the Project Library View. Then FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT or right-click/Duplicate Project. Do this to make as many separate projects as you need.
For each one, keep one section and delete the rest.

  • Writing to dvd with super drive - speed?

I understand from the user manual that I can write to either + or - dvd disks. However they are sold with different speed ratings. Which speed of disk should I buy? Also, in anticipation of further questions, if in 6 months time faster dvd disks are being sold, can I start using faster disks?
    Thanks, LJ

    Hi Louis XV11:
I understand from the user manual that I can write to
either + or - dvd disks. However they are sold with
different speed ratings. Which speed of disk should I
    buy?
If you have the first generation of MB's then you can write to DVD's at 4X and a second generation (LATE 2006) you can write at 6X.
Nowadays you can use any speed, if the disk is rated faster than your drive, it will use your max drive speed, ( so if you have a 16X disk and a 6X drive it will burn at 6X) and if the speed rating is slower than you drives max speed, it will burn at that speed, so you don't need to worry.
For Important data, I would recommend either Apple or Verbatim Disks, and for video, home movies (iMovie, iDVD) use -R.
Also, in anticipation of further questions, if
in 6 months time faster dvd disks are being sold, can
    I start using faster disks?
    As above
    -Robert

  • Writing a DVD

Hi, sorry for asking stupid questions but I am trying to run a dvd; I have the audio_ts folder and Video_ts folder and I can run previews in dvdafteredit. Basically everything is in place but I do not know how to actually run the dvd in it's entirety, like a launch program file or something. What file does the mac look for to start the dvd? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Kev

To play a set of DVD files from your hard drive using the Apple DVD Player use "Open DVD Media" from the "File" menu and select the VIDEO_TS folder. It should play it as if it were a DVD.
To burn the VIDEO_TS folder to a disk, use DVD Imager (free) from:
    <http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html>
This creates a UDF (Universal Data Format) image file. Use Disk Utility to burn this to a DVD.

  • Writing a DVD Through a Local Network

    Scenario #1
    -2 iMac core 2 duo's - connected w linksys 10/100 router w ethernet
-assume nothing else is being used
If I setup sharing from mac1 to mac2 and put a dvd image on mac1, will I be able to write a DVD in toast on mac2 maybe 4x to 16x from the image in mac1?
will there be congestion in the network causing buffer underruns - or is there enough throughput to happen easily?
    Scenario #2
Will I also be able to do this in a small office of 5 computers with light internet use and other light sharing happening?
At what point will buffer underruns start happening?

    1. Yes, if you can mount the DVD image in Toast you can burn it. You may need to dial it down to 2x due to the network speed, but you can use the "test" feature in Toast to verify prior to committing a disk to the burner.
    2. Same will apply in the office scenario.
You won't know when underrun will occur as you can not control the other users. Right in the middle of your burn someone could fire off a huge file transfer. Again you may need to restrict the speed and use the test feature of Toast.

  • Super Drive - DVD Writing issues

    Hi,
Every time I try to write a DVD (this was working!) it fails with:-
    Hardware Error
    Sense Code
    0x09, 0x01
    Tracking Servo Failure
The DVD's I am using are HiSpace DVD+R 4.7Gb printed silver.
Any Ideas? I can write CDRs but need to write my photos to DVD as there are many Gb's worth!
    Cheers in advance,
    Carl.

mmh... the mini Superdrive is notorious for being below par in almost all respects, but just writing a DVD should be OK. Couple of things to try:
    1. Reduce burning speed
    2. Try with DVD-R media

  • Quicktime movies compress from HD to TV Ratio when writing DVD

    I'm using version iDVD 7 (sorry...no forum for v.7 ???).
Using "ONE STEP DVD from MOVIE" feature to convert a Quicktime Movie that was created in Final Cut Express into a DVD. The item properties in FCE are letterbox 1920x1080. After writing DVD, the image on the screen is compressed to TV ratio. QUESTION #1: How do I avoid this and QUESTION #2: There's probably a better software app for making DVDs from FCE...what do you suggest? Many thanks!!!

Hello again...I have some conflicts in the information provided and the links to others therein.
Article TS1611 mentions to save in 854x480 NTSC, but there's no option to that ratio...in either HD or other formats. The other direction to use the specific compression is something that I was not doing. I was going with the default...so Article TS1611 is a hybrid solution at this point.
The second link suggestion takes me into iDVD's themes...which I do not use. I only want the player without all the graphic stuff. That's why I go to FILE>"One step DVD from Movie".
The other mention within an article suggested using a program that "amorphs" the file during stamping. This user had a file that when exported from FCE was not in the 16:9 ration. Mine are in the 16:9 ratio in HD and then in changes the ratio to 4:3 when writing the DVD within iDVD.
So all seems to be correct, then the DVD plays in TV ratio.
    Thanks again in advance!

  • Writing DVD in Windows 7

    Respected Sir/Madam
I have downloaded a ISO for which I want to write a DVD of.
I have downloaded ImgBurn and also tried writing the DVD in Native Windows 7 way "Windows Disc Image Burner".
But everytime I write with the above procedure it says DVD has been written successfully but the DVD shows as blank after the written process.
Please let me know the best way in ISO can be written to DVD in Windows 7.
    Thank you.

So, only .iso? Yes it is an ISO file.
This worked before?  This is the first time I am writing DVD using ISO file
ODD Specs - Optiarc DVD +-RW AD 7585H
    Softwares used
    - ImgBurn
    - Native Windows 7 way "Windows Disc Image Burner".
Softwares shows success in writing the DVD's but the DVD shows as blank after the written process the complete.
    1. Can't think of any registry issues.
    2.  Restarted before writing the DVD
    Thanks.

  • Re: Problem with TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D TO04 stoped burning CD and DVD.....

Hi everyone! The problem is basically it just doesn't want to write/burn any brand of cd/dvd anymore . It worked just fine for little more than year and recently developed that problem. I'm sure its not the media brands as I've tried with many. The problem persists with Nero, Alcohol120%, MagicISO, PowerISO, Burn4Free, no matter what I try to burn- ordinary data, audio, programs or images. Note that I'm able to write with Alcohol successfully but there's actually nothing on the CD and Nero burns the data also but fails to verify afterwards and gives an error. Writing on DVD R/RWs is completely unsuccessful creating coasters. Also the drive opens itself with no reason and whenever it wants. I have Toshiba A200-1MB notebook running original Vista Home Premium. Here is an error report, hope it'll help. Thanks and any help given is much appreciated!!!

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

Also remove any dust on the lens using a clean microfiber cloth.
