WRT54GL having network stability issues in Windows 7

Hi!
I'm currently evaluating moving to Windows 7 Bits (currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit from MSDN) on a stationary test computer (AMD X3, 8 GB ram, etc...).
I've got 2 Ubuntu 64-bit machines on an gigabit LAN, and an Tvix media player running fine all attached to a D-Link DGS-1005D gigabitswitch that is attached to a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 router with a 10/10 Mbit internet WAN. I am NOT using any wireless connection other than very seldom for an iPhone or when installing/supporting/servicing other peoples laptops.
My test computer is running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with excellent performance but booting to windows 7 ultimate gives me strange network problems. I first tried the built in gigabit lan on this computer but then tried changing into using a D-Link DGE-528T gigabit lan controller (gives better performance when the network is actually up). I have also tried windows xp 32-bits which worked perfectly..
Back to windows 7...
The funny animated new network diagnostics center seems to always pinpoint that it is my router that isn't working although all my other computers are running fine at the same time. I'm am at this point unable to access http-admin for the router from the w7 computer (fully accessible from linux though). Scanning through the web I've tryed a feew tips with no final solution:
* Disabling IP6 protocol (less problems after that)
* Limiting the network load for my primary linuxserver (might actually have also lessened the problems).
* Tried with and without QoS on the WRT54GL router.
* Tried disabling the QoS service on the network card in Windows 7.
* Tried a few pointers from: http://speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574
  *  According to my reading, this one was the primary candidate for fixing my problem: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
* I've upgrade my Tomato firmware to v1.25.
If I simply wait long enough the network problems seems to disapear by it self. But then at a non repeatable time pattern the internet connection via the router is lost again.
I've not tried DD-WRT and some people have suggested that it would solve the problem but no one has pinpointed exactly what in the DD-WRT firmware solves this.
I'm currently laughing about the suggestion from the windows 7 suggestion to look after a router with a sticker saying "Compatible with Windows 7".
Anyone got any pointers on this? I'm afraid I need at least one windows, preferably one supporting 64-bits due to my memory needs and I simply love my LINKSYS WRT54GL since it is the only router I have ever owned that NEVER has failed (and therefore is the only one I'm recommending to other people also needing 24/7 remote access capability from outside their own network).
Best regards
Thomas

Tnx for quick reply!
I've tried disabling the anti-virus (AVAST) and also disabled the windows 7 firewall (actually disabled the built in software firewall before - forgott it in the list above!).
I've also today tried both letting my WRT54GL assign a static IP (192.168.1.110) and normal DHCP (192.168.1.103). Both seems to work but the network is stil lost at random intervall that seems to happen more often if my network load through the router is higher.
When Win7 thinks the network is down it is not possible to ping the router (192.168.1.1) from win 7 but my linux computer has no problems doing that (and happily keeps using the net).
Strange this...

  • X240 Network Driver issue with Windows PE

HelloI am working with OSD deployment in a big organisation. We are using SCCM 2012 SP1 to deploy new computers with our own image and applications. The new Thinkpad X240 is causing a big problem at the moment since we do not seem to be able to find an appropriate Ethernet network driver for the built-in Intel ethernet interface that is working in winPE 4.0. This is what happens. The computer boots, I press the F12 key, the computer presents a list of bootable devices, I choose the ethernet NIC.The computer PXE boots - it recieves an DHCP address from our server, downloads boot.wim, downloads the boot.winPE.boot.wim file and then starts winPE on the X240. It gets to "Preparing Network Connections", hangs there for a while, and then it reboots. If I use the F8 option and run ipconfig, it reports "Windows IP Configuration" and nothing else. If I run /renew it says "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation". There seems to be no NIC available to winPE to start the Task Sequence with.I have downloaded the Windows 8 x64 Network driver and the Windows 7 x64 enterprise driver package Network driver from Lenovo, for this model and injected the Network drivers in the WinPe boot file. Neither of these drivers is working with the Network Interface in winPE. We do not have any problems with any other models, they all install with our SCCM 2012 SP1. Is there anyone who have experienced and resolved this? Kind regardsNick

Hello,  I experiencing the strikly same situation with the same configuration :- SCCM 2012 SP1,- SCCM 2012 SP1 Boot Image x86 4.0,- Lenovo X240,- Drivers Lenovo SCCM package for Windows 7 (32-bit) http://support.lenovo.com/fr/fr/downloads/ds038819- Task Sequence W7x86. No problem when deploying an adaptated Task Sequence with Lenovo X250. However, WinPE don't allowing the network adapter to get a TCP IP configuration when deploying with Lenovo X240. To resolve this situation, do you use :- the standard boot image in the Windows 8 DVD or a customized one with Windows ADK ?- your boot image is this a x86 type or x64 ?- In case of a customized Boot Image, have you, please, some advice to give to use Windows ADK ?  Best regards

  • Airport Extreme Network Stability Issues

My airport base station is within cord reach of the only working jack in my house (old house). My den is down the hall, my boarder's down in the basement.
We've been suffering from pretty bad connection issues, and there doesn't seem to be any clear start to them and nothing I do makes it better. Within the last couple of months, I dropped the "static IP" option from my ISP (DSL cable), got a new modem (which the techs at my ISP have tweaked) and I'm wondering if I need to tweak the settings on my Airport due to this changed set-up? What happens is that randomly, the download settings drop to almost 0, the computer almost disconnects (the status bar starts to scroll), then in 30 seconds or a minute, its back up to normal. Yesterday, I tried reverting to the last firmware update (like another recent poster, I didn't get notice of that update until relatively recently), and that seemed that it might have worked, but then back to tricks this aft.
The problem is clearly with the Airport. It's not the computer, as we've got two completely different systems (a PC of some sort and my iMac) accessing it. I've also hooked the iMac straight to the modem and the signal is just fine from there.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
This is just a side comment unrelated to your problem, but usually "DSL" and "cable" are two entirely different things, with DSL service being provided over a phone line and cable being provided over a coax cable TV wire.
got a new modem (which the techs at my ISP have tweaked) and I'm wondering if I need to tweak the settings on my Airport due to this changed set-up?
If it works at all I wouldn't think so.

Could you explain what you mean by "the download settings" and "the status bar"?
I'd launch AirPort Utility, enter "manual setup" mode with your AirPort Extreme, pull down the Base Station menu, select "Logs and Statistics", then select the "Wireless Clients" tab. Watch the graph as well as the signal and noise values in the table, particularly during times when you're having connection problems. What you see may give a hint as to the nature of your problems.

  • Network Disconnecting issue with Windows 8

We are getting RTO to gateway at regular interval on windows 8 laptop.at same time we are able to ping system from same subnet.
we have installed windows 8 in different make and model of laptop also Ethernet driver is updated with latest version, Windows firewall n defender is not enable no third party firewall or antivirus is installed in laptop.
if we installed windows 7 in same laptop with latest Ethernet driver network is working fine.

can you please launch the following command :
    to reset the TCP/IPv4 config
=> netsh interface ipv4 reset all
    to configure your NIC:
    => netsh int ipv4 set add name="Name_Of_Your_NIC" source=static address=IP_Address mask=Subnet_Mask Gateway=IP_Of_the_Gateway
where Name_of_your_NIC is the name of your NIC adapter (e.i Local Area Connection)
IP_Address is the ip address you want to specify on the machine
Subnet_Mask is 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0, depending on the IP address's class
IP_Of_The_Gateywa is the IP address of the router
Let me know is the problem is resolved after applying this procedure.

  • Been having some stability issues particularly with software...

(as opposed to the OS), but i notice that numerous applications crash on their own. I'm thinkging i may need to dump my plist files for all of my apps...but wanted to see if there was anything else i should try first...since resetting all thos preferences will be somewhat of an inconvenience....and very time consuming...
    any help?

um ok...well yeah it's numerous applications...and sometimes the specific app will freeze for a moment before crashing with the whole "close, reopen, and whatever" pane opens up....others, no freezing at all, just the pane pops up. I AM typically using the programs that are crashing, though not necessarily doing anything heavy or complicated, just a normal function of whatever app...
More recently I've had a couple of stranger issues like with Mail, when the pane is minimized or hidden, and I click on the alias i have on my dock, a new Finder window would open up for a while...that happened everytime i clicked it a couple of days ago....I tried force quitting (regular quit wouldn't work) several times, and at some point after several repeated tries, it went back to normal....
With Safari, though I DID have an inordinate number of Tabs open, more than would fit on the width of the pane, when I would click on one tab to make it active, the tab that was two tabs over to the left would be the one to activate instead...so that was weird ...
but mostly it's the full on cashing of apps where i get the option to close or report or reopen (i believe those are the 3 things)
i have 2gb ram..the max for my desktop. My HD is 120 GB, and I have been loading it up quite abit, running out of space more than a few times, though there doesn't seem to be an specific correlation to the timing of the crashing apps as they don't seem to happen when i get the disk space low warning....so i dunno if that could be part of it?
    not using classic....

  • Illustrator CS6 Stability Issues- crashing every 5 minutes

    Hi All,
I've been having serious stability issues with Illustrator ever since I upgraded from CS5.5 to CS6. It crashes like every 5 minutes, mostly when I use the "nevigator" tool to pan to another area of the artboard. The windows messsage was something like "the program has stopped working".
I am really sick and tired of that and this is seriously affecting my productivity. Furthermore, does Illustrator has any auto recovery function?
Does anybody know what might be wrong? I am using Windows 7.
    Grateful for your help.
    Best,
    James

I keep having the same problem. It would be half as bad if there was at least an auto recovery function.
    Also on CS6 / Windows 7.

  • Massive stability issues - Disk Utility repair failed, hardware test failed

    Hi,
I am having massive stability issues. The installer will not install anything, programs are quitting randomly, and it is getting very annoying!
I read through a lot of posts and I have attempted to:
Repair my disk using the install cd: but that failed.
I did a Hardware test: but i had an error relating to fonts (?), couldn't see anything on the screen and I couldn't do anything.
Is there something else I could do that I haven't tried?
I have had my PB for a little over a year and have had no issues like this before. All of these issues seemed to start when I was playing a game and it suddenly just quit; I then couldn't go back into the game or re-install the game.
    Help!!
    12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   768 RAM

    Hi, Dan.
You wrote: "Repair my disk using the install cd: but that failed."That's a big problem. You won't get very far until the problems noted by Repair Disk, the function I presume you ran based on your description, are sorted out. It's possible the hard drive has failed.
If the Apple Hardware Test failed, that's another significant problem. If it produces messages you can read that describe the failure, write them down. The machine may need to be serviced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
As to your next steps, first run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified to see what's up with your disk and if anything can be done to correct that.
    Good luck!

  • HT1338 After updating to Lion 10.7.5 I have had stability issues - Macbook continues to freeze and Spotlight is forever indexing. What's the fix?

I am having real stability issues after installing Lion OS X 10.7.5 - my Macbook keeps freezing and Spotlight is forever repeatedly indexing - does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem with a Mac Pro desktop and it started after I upgraded to 10.7.5 . Exact same issue , Crashes for no reason ( very little running - mail, browser) then reboots. Sometimes it does multiple reboots.
I hate to say it but it's tiumes like this that I envy the Microsoft's approach to updates, if it is bad (which is not unheard of) you can go into programs and remove the last update. It would be nice if Apple implemented this since their quality doesn't seem to be what it once was.

  • Massive stability issues. Firefox crashes often.

Ever since Firefox updated to the latest version, I've been having massive stability issues. I downgraded back to version 19, but it is still very unstable. I have to force-quit often when it becomes unresponsive - a dozen times a day or more.
    Things I have tried:
    - Updating all plugins.
    - Scrubbing my registry.
    - Clean install/reinstall.
    - Deleting tracking cookies.
    - Scanning for viruses and spyware.
    - Downgrading to previous version.
I want to continue using Firefox, but this has gotten unbearable.

  • Poll: Who is having no sound issues with X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro?

Several weeks ago I purchased an? X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro. I have the latest drivers/software installed for all of my hardware and am using Windows 7 64-bit ultimate. There is no sound when the computer resumes from Standby or hibernate. I have to disable the driver in the device manager and then re-enable to restore sound. It seems the X-fi driver is not initializing when the computer resumes from these states. Problem does not occur during a normal cold start or restart.
i have an open ticket with creative support and need to find out if others are having the same issue on windows 7. Several folks having the same issue at this link with little to no success at fixing. I don't know if this is a driver thing, an IRC conflict or what. I have no had this issue on the same hardware with any other sound cards I've I had, to include an HT Omega card and the onboard sound; which leaves me convinced it is something with the X-fi card.
Please respond to this posting if you are having the same issue. If you have found a way to fix it, please say so as the creative support folks are still investigating and have asked me to give them more examples.

Just to confirm that deselecting entries in the "headphone detection" tab the creative audio panel seems to provide a temporary (but not an acceptable permanent) solution.
"Automatically mute speakers" provides the workaround but "automatically enable headphone settings" also needs to be deselected otherwise the PC will set to "headphone" on resume (rather than "5:" for example).
So it could be that on resuming from standby it is setting some internal headphone settings to mute the speakers.
I have created a support ticket hoping that this and the other post above might bring about a driver update.
Will keep testing and post any updates.

  • Neo4 SLI Stability Issues

Hello all, I'm having some stability issues with my new setup.  Check my specs below in sig for hardware setup.
My system installed XP just fine.  After that, it crashed over and over.  Blue screens, lock ups, whatever... system never, or has, been stable ever since.  Lately, the system has been fairly stable, except when I start games that are graphics heavy.  For example, I play Joint Operations: Escalation, and when the game starts an online session, it locks up.  Always at the exact same point.  I've rolled back my nvidia drivers, changed video cards to an identical 6800 Ultra, and have had the same results.
I've run memtest86 for 3 passes, and no errors.  My PSU is an Antec TrueBlue 480 with the following specs, +3.3V@30A;+5V@38A;[email protected]; +12V@22A;[email protected];+5VSB@2A.
Does anyone have any thoughts?  I'm really at a loss here.  I'm not a n00b as I'm a sysadmin by trade, but need some expert help right about now.
    Thanks in advance!

haha, at first I was in the same boat.  Driver updates seemed to help, but the instability isn't all gone.  I just finished a C&C Zero Hour game without problem, so it only seems to be certain games.  But the certain games are my favorite ones...

  • EA4500 – Smart Wi-Fi interface and Windows Network Map issues

I purchased this Router about 2 weeks ago as a phased upgrade of our Home Network, primarily to enhance media streaming. It has the latest firmware preinstalled from the factory. Prior to the purchase and installation of the EA4500 Router I replaced my old Motorola SurfBoard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem with a Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. My old Linksys E2000 Router worked perfectly with the SB6141, with the exception that the E2000 wasn’t IPv6 enabled, but does have 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet (RJ-45) and Internet ports.
The EA4500 has been installed for about 10 days and seems to have improved local network speeds and I don’t seem to be having any Internet connectivity issues. However, there are some disturbing issues with the EA4500 and the AE3000 I purchased. There are 11 devices connected through the Router; a Dell Desktop (wireless with the AE3000), a Dell Desktop (Ethernet), a Dell Laptop (wireless), 2 Canon Printers (1 Ethernet and 1 Wireless), 2 Western Digital 1TB MyBookLive Network Drives (both Ethernet), a WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (wireless), an Apple TV media player (wireless), an iPad (wireless), and an Android Smartphone (wireless).
Issue 1 – The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi interface appears to be unreliable at times!!! I’ve read about this problem here on the Community involving the EA6500, so I don’t know if this is a Linksys Server issue, as suggested in a few responses, or a bug in the Router firmware, or defective hardware. However, when the interface locks up, it can’t be accessed from a wireless or wired connection. Usually, powering down the Router and then powering it back up and restart will allow it to function again. However, at times before the interface completely locks up it shows either just a white screen or the security screen will show no firewall features enabled. This is a little scary, so I’ll do a complete reset and setup; this is becoming a pain in the rear!!!!! Is there any hope for this being fixed, in this Router, not the next generation??????????
Issue 2 - All of my network devices show up in the Router’s Device List. Except for the Apple devices they also show up, when they are online, in Windows 7 Explorer under Network and when you click on Network they are correctly displayed as Computers, Media Devices, Network Infrastructure, or Storage. However, when you click on “Open Network and Sharing Center” and then click on “See Full Map”; it fails with the response “Windows cannot create the network map. Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network”; no device map is shown. When I follow the link for more information, the only thing that stands out is “A device on the network, such as a hub or switch, is not working properly or is not compatible with the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol, which Windows uses to create the map. To fix this problem, disable the device, turn it off, or remove it from your network”. All of my network devices showed up on the Network Map with the old E2000. This issue is the same on all of my computers, either wired or wireless. Any known solutions for this, or is it as Windows suggests; an incompatible Router????
Thanks in advance for any insight or solutions. With the issues I’m having with the EA4500 and the AE3000; they are both probably going back to Amazon.

thebluemamba_24; Thank you for your suggestion; I finally found time yesterday to perform an extensive evaluation before I return the Router. However, rather than trying to add devices manually, my rationale was if the EA4500 can’t process them correctly, automatically, it needs to be returned anyway, so I added devices normally letting the device an Router handle the process.
In thinking through this issue, all devices on our network are detected and identified by Windows Explorer on Windows 7 computers; except of course the Apple and Android devices (Apple TV, iPad, and Smartphone). So, I wondered if one of those three devices being added to the Router’s device list was somehow causing issues or interfering with Windows 7’s ability to generate a Network Map. Therefore, my approach was to turn off or disable all devices on our network, reset the Router to factory defaults, reestablish the Router to my custom Home Network configuration using a Windows 7 PC that has LAN and Wireless access to the Router, then add one device at a time and check with each addition to see if Windows 7 could still generate a Network Map.
With the Router reset and reestablishment complete; I began the process of adding one device at a time and checking to see if a Network Map was being generated. What I discovered was when a recent addition to the network, a Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, was connected (wirelessly), Windows 7 could no longer generate the Network Map and the failure was consistent. The only way to get the Network Map to work again was to remove power from the WD TV Live, although it remained in the EA4500’s Device List; simply turning it off didn’t help. Since I’d originally witnessed the Windows 7 Network Map working with the Linksys E2000 Router that the EA4500 replaced, I decided to test the WD TV Live with that Router. It worked initially, but it failed consistently after the first success. Interestingly, the failure indication was a little different, but nevertheless generation of the Network Map failed.
I’ve tried changing a few settings on the EA4500 as well as the WD TV Live, but nothing helped. There was a recent firmware update to the WD TV Live, so I might try rolling back the firmware to see if it makes a difference.
The Network Map issue might very well be an issue with the WD TV Live, not the Router, but after reading many threads on this Community I have reservations that the problems I’m experiencing with the Smart interface lockup will be fixed. I suspect new emerging replacement products will be the focus and these older products will be abandoned and no more firmware fixes will be forthcoming and I don’t want to spend more money for a new product just to fix old problems and get something that works properly. The Network Map issue is troublesome, but the lockup of the Router’s “Linksys Smart Wi-Fi” interface is a serious matter to me. It appears that once it locks up, the only way to correct it is a power off restart; not practical if you’re traveling and trying to access settings remotely; the selling point for this feature.
Given the problems I’m experiencing with the EA4500 and AE3000, I guess I’ll return them. Too bad, because otherwise the EA4500 seems like it’s a good Router. I’ve been brand loyal since the Linksys WRT54G came out, but after reading this Community and with my personal experience with the EA4500 and AE3000, now I’ll probably give the NETGEAR N900 equivalents a try.

We have an iPad mini, since updating to ios 7, the iPad no longer picks up my network. My iPhone 4 was having a similar issue, but it was picking up my network. I was able to find a fix to the iPhone, but the nothing is working for our iPad. Is anyone else having a problem like this? Is there a fix?

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter the Wi-Fi password.

  • Having issues installing windows

I have a GT60 2QD-1066US notebook, installed a new SSD in the open HD slot but having issues reinstalling windows on it, i cant seem to get any cloneing program to copy it properly, and when i install my other windows 8 media and use the key off of jellybean finder it comes up with invalid key.  How do i go about reinstalling windows on this SSD hard drive that was installed or is it impossible?

Not knowing where did you get your Win8 but the DPK inside the BIOS is probably not for the version of Win8 you obtained. That DPK is only for OEM Win8.
I'll suggest you just back up your preloaded system. In your preloaded system, there's a MSI's utility "BurnRecovery" (maybe the cloning program you wanted?) which can be used for backup your preloaded system from hidden partition of the disk into a disc or a USB drive. That version of the Windows can be activated directly by the DPK inside the BIOS and no need to worry any invalid-key problem. You just need to use those disc or USB drive to recover the system on your new SSD.
If you insist to install a new version of Win8 from other medias on your new SSD, it's possible, but the activation is the problem. OEM DPK usually supports normal Windows 8 only, not pro or ultimate versions.
