WSUS Database SUSDB authentication via SQL

1) Just setup your frontend IIS and backend MSSQL server as described in Appendix C. http://www.microsoft...f7ad0cd638.mspx
2) Create a SQL user, for example susdbuser and give it dbowner rights to the SUSDB database
3) Setup the registry on the frontend iis server:
Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup
Values:
SqlAuthenticationMode SqlAuthentication (mind the case)
SqlServerName <your sqlservername>
SqlDatabaseName SUSDB
SqlUserName <your sql-account>
SqlEncryptedPassword <see below>
4)
compile it yourself, the source is below to C:\Program Files\Update Services\service\bin and run it
from the commandline to determine your encryption string. Just run the program and give the "clear text" password as an argument and it will return an encrypted string. Paste the output in the SqlEncryptedPassword registry value.
You need to run it in the mentioned directory, else you'll get an error...it needs a dll from that dir.
5) Reset IIS (iisreset) and the "Windows Updates Services" service, and things should work !
using System;
using Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal;
// For compile add microsoft.updateservices.utils.dll to References from "C:\Program Files\Update Services\service\bin"
namespace WsusEncryptString
    /// <summary>
    /// Summary description for Class1.
    /// </summary>
    class Class1
        /// <summary>
        /// The main entry point for the application.
        /// </summary>
        [STAThread]
        static void Main(string[] args)
            try
                int c = args.Length;
                if (c > 0)
                    System.Security.SecureString secureStringPwd = EncryptionUtilities.StringToSecureString(args[0]);
                    string resultEncryptPwd = EncryptionUtilities.Encrypt(secureStringPwd);
                    Console.WriteLine(resultEncryptPwd.ToString());
                else throw new Exception("Need one argument!");
            catch (Exception e)
                Console.WriteLine(e.Message);

In some case we have to use SQL Authentication instead of Windows Authentication
SQL Authentication is NOT supported for use with WSUS (for very good authentication reasons, never mind the *security* reasons).
This scenario is useful if WSUS is in DMZ(within firewall) & SQL is in NON-DMZ environment (behind firewall).
This configuration is totally unnecessary for this scenario. Furthermore, I would argue that a WSUS server in a DMZ ought to have a LOCAL database and thus completely ignore this entire consideration.
The only thing that is *required* to support access to the remote SQL inside the firewall is that the WSUS server in the DMZ and the SQL Server inside the firewall belong to the same Active Directory Domain, and that's actually required even if there isn't
a firewall between the two servers!
So, if they're both members of the same domain (required), ALL authentication can be done with domain accounts, completely eliminating the need for SQL Authentication.
But thanks for sharing yet another way for somebody to screw up their WSUS installation. :-)

  • How uninstall WSUS server role from Windows Server 2008 R2 with database hosted on remote SQL server?

    Hello,
    I'm looking to uninstall the WSUS server role 3.0 from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The thing is the database is hosted on a remote MS SQL server. I want to remove the database as well. I would like help for figuring out what I need to do to completely remove
    WSUS and its database.
    Any kind of help is appreciated! Thanks

    Hi,
    WSUS offers limited support for running database software on a computer that is separate from the computer where the rest of WSUS is installed. This section offers step-by-step
    instructions for how to install WSUS in this configuration.
    If you meet the uninstall issue with the normal uninstall, please post the detail information for us but if you just want to manage the WSUS related SQL data, you can refer
    the following KB then delete corresponding database.
    In the general procedure, you will create the related WSUS database as below::
    Run WSUS Setup from the command line, using the SQLINSTANCE_NAME=servername\instancename command-line option, where servername is the name of the remote computer, and instancename
    is the name of the SQL Server instance that you will use for WSUS.
    More information:

    Have installed GERMAN WS2012 R2 Essentials and have added plus configered WSUS role. Have "unfortunately" installed ENGLISH SQL Server Management Studio. Have connected Management Studio to
    \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query with  Windows Authentication, can browse Databases ... BUT when right clicking the server's name and selecting Properties to limit the amount of Memory WSUS Database can use after

    Hi,

    Any Chance to set the memory limitations via PS Script?
    Please use

    requested dialog because failed to retrieve data for this request as the System could not find the requested file"
    On current situation, I’m also guess that this issue (above error message) may be caused by different language
    versions (GERMAN Windows Sserver 2012 R2 Essentials and
    ENGLISH SQL Server Management Studio).
    If any update, please feel free to let me know.

    - WSUS is using the windows internal database.
    any advise??
    thanks

    Check these steps.
    go to Sql Server Configuration management->SQL Server network config->protocols for 'servername' and check TCP/IP is enabled.
    Open SSMS in run, and check you are able to login to server using specfied username/password and/or using windows authentication.
    repeat step 1 for SQL native client config also

  • Can connect via ODBC but not via SQL Developer?

    Hi, all.
    My setup:
    Windows XP Pro
    JDK 1.6
    SQL Developer 2.1.1.64.45
    I'm attempting to connect to an Oracle DB using OS authentication and trying hand-entry of the host and SID; and also trying my TNS file. When I attempt to connect via SQL Developer, I get the following error:
    "Status : Failure -Test failed: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied."
    When I attempt this same connection, however, using ODBC and Access, I can get right in and see the tables.
    What can I try in order to get SQL Developer working correctly?
    Thanks,
    IVR Avenger

    I'm not really familiar with connections Using OS authentication, but if OCI+TNS based connections work you could try to activate OCI connections by selecting
    Preferences -> Database -> Advanced -> Use OCI/Thick Driverand then use the TNS connection type when creating your connection.
    It should work well even with the thin driver but i cannot help you in this case because i've never had to use this kind of authentication.

  • Query WSUS Database

    I'm trying to query the WSUS DB using the Query Database activity to run some cleanup scripts on a schedule. The initial catalog is different than in a typical DB instance because, according to what I've read, its not a full version of SQL. Its a skimmed
    down version of SQL Express. So the DB looks like "Pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\SQL\QUERY". I've tried connecting with a few variations of this and keep getting an error:
    Fatal Error Database error has occurred. Fatal error has occured. Please ensure that you have the latest MDAC installed which can be found on the installation cd.
    And:
    Database error has occurred. Cannot open database "Pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\SQL\QUERY" requested by the login. The login failed.
     Code = 80004005
     Code meaning = Unspecified error
     Source = Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
     Description = Cannot open database "Pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\SQL\QUERY" requested by the login. The login failed.
    I've tried using just "QUERY" as the catalog as well...that failed. At this point I feel like I'm just guessing.
    Also, I know it says login failed but the service account I'm using is an SCCM admin and
    should be an admin on the DBs as well. So I assume login is failing because it cant find the DB to login to.
    So, does anyone know the correct string to enter for the WSUS initial catalog?

    Hello,
    Did you figured this out?
    I tried to connect susdb with UDL file, I have to detach it before I can connect successfully.
    And here is a blog, hope this will give you some clue.

    I resorted to PowerShell using the Invoke-SQLCMD cmdlet. I had to Invoke-Command on the WSUS box. Here's my script:
    $server = "WSUS Server"
    $user = "Account"
    $pass = "Password"
    $sec = ConvertTo-SecureString $pass -AsPlainText -Force
    $cred = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PsCredential($user, $sec)
    Invoke-Command -ComputerName $Server -Credential $cred -ScriptBlock{
    Import-Module sqlps
    $instance = '\\.\Pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\SQL\QUERY'
    Invoke-Sqlcmd -ServerInstance $instance -Database SUSDB -inputfile "c:\Scripts\cleanup.txt"

  • How to reindex the WSUS database 3.0sp2

    Good Day,
    It has come to my attention that MS released a new update KB2938066 which increase security.  The recommendation is to run Server Cleanup Wizard (which I did) and then reindex the WSUS database which I have a question on.
    I am running Windows Server 2008R2 with a standard download of WSUS 3.0SP2 installed.  I used the default database which is the internal database for windows.  The database files look like
    SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_log.ldf  and in services you see Windows Internal database (MICROSOFT##SSEE)
    With that being said, I need to run the SQLCMD utility which is my problem.
    When I go to install the software SQLSERVER2005_SQLCMD_X64   I get the following error and I am not sure what or where I have to go to fix it
    Setup is Missing a Prerequisites
    SQL Native Client
    when I open the link up it really doesn't tell me what I need to do.  Am I running the right software to install SQLCMD or do I need to install some SQL Client first and if so where do I find the client?
    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated
    Thank You
    Adam Raff

    Hi Henrik
    Sorry but I have very little knowledge of SQL so please have a little patience with my questions.
    I went over the list of files and I see one of the files that I posted is SQLSERVER2005_SQLCMD_X64   which is a msi.  I thought that This was the Native client or part of it.  If not what other file do I need to download to get SQLCMD
    to install.
    So now my questions are as follows
    1: What version do I use 2005 or 2008?
    2: What other files do I need to install besides SQLSERVERxxxx_SQLCMD_64 to get the software to work?  Where are the ODBC drives included in?  What file or files?
    Thanks Again

  • How to load an Excel sheet into Oracle via SQL* Loader

    Hallo!I am trying to load an Excel spreadsheet into an Oracle 10g database via SQL*Loader.
    How do I achieve this via Oracle Enterprise Manager?
    Please give a detailed explanation especially covering the locations of the control file,infile,bad file etc for Oracle 10g running in both Windows and Linux platforms.

    This has nothing to do with Oracle Enterprise Manager

    We are currently in the process of migrating some applications from Oracle 10 to 11. Our admins have setup a new development system for us with an Oracle 11 instance. Regarding performance the new system behaves more or less the same than our old, e.g. when executing SQLs we notice hardly any performance differences and those we find are slightly in favour of the new system.
    But now we discovered that the time it takes to establish a database connection via SQL*Plus is longer on the Oracle 11 system. Running the following code
    sqlplus -s user/pw@database <<END
    quit
    ENDa thousand times takes ~60s under Oracle 10 but ~140s under Oracle 11. This may not seem much but we are running a test framework consisting of a bunch of shell scripts where several thousand connections are openend via SQL*Plus to execute some SQLs, so that even this small time difference results in rather huge difference in total runtime. The SQLs themself require roughly the same time in both databases, as already mentioned above they are in fact slightly faster in Oracle 11.
    To analyze the time difference I ran a trace for the connect with the following parameters in sqlnet.ora
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=4
    TRACE_UNIQUE_CLIENT=ONand found out that there is a time difference of about 70ms during the connect handshake:

    (1) [22-MAR-2013 13:33:40:618] nscon: got NSPTRS packetAny ideas what could be the reason for this time difference? Something in our network configuration or something else?

    With local connections - I do not think a TCP packet send from an IP to the same IP, leaves the interface as an actual wire protocol/signal. If I'm correct, then running local connection tests will be mostly useless in checking the actual network infrastructure.
    Tests 3 and 4 should be showing the same connection times as the same physical network infrastructure is used - only the direction is reversed in the tests.
    I would assume that port settings on the switches and interface settings on the routers treat packets equally in both directions between 2 servers. But this could in part explain the problem if this is not the case. In a case of a router for example, the 1st test's ingress interface is the egress interface of the 2nd test (and vice versa). Configurations can differ substantially between interfaces on the same router. Likewise if there is a firewall - as different rule sets are applied in each test and these rule sets could differ.
    So I would not be too quick to state that this is definitely not a network problem. But I agree that based on the small percentage difference (assuming comparable tests), it does not look like a network issue.
    The next step is to determine what the delay is between the listener accepting the client connection, and the connection being serviced by a dedicated server process.
    This will require listener tracing - tracing the time from when the listener accepted the connection (and parsed the TNS connection string), to handing off the connection to the dedicated server process.
    As a comparison test, you can also test shared server connections. Dispatcher processes (of the db instance) register themselves with the listener. The shared server client hand off is thus done to an existing server process - no need for the Listener to make a kernel call to load and initialise an executable image.
    Shared connections are typically faster than dedicated connections in this respect.
    If there is a major time difference, then it means some kind of issue with the listener dealing with dedicated servers as oppose to dispatcher hand off's. As both connections would have had very similar network transit time - which means the connection time difference is related directly to dealing with a dedicated server connection request and hand off.
    You can also substitute the oracle executable with a wrapper - and troubleshoot the actual dedicated server startup. I've only done this with Oracle XE 10.2 though and with local IPC connections. Unsure how robust this will be for testing purposes via TCP using 11g.

  • EUS password authentication in sql developer failing with username/password

    We have recently changed to use Enterprise User Security (EUS) for our client authentication (password global authentication).
    This is working fine but we are encountering an issue with SQL Developer whereby we can't logon using our EUS details, it simply returns the following on the logon screen:
    Status : Failure - Test failed: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
    Logging on via sql plus client and server software and other 3rd party tools like pl/sql developer works correctly.
    It appears to be an issue with sql developer itself.
    We are using the latest Production release of sql developer 2.1
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    This is an issue for
    Edited by: david butler on Jan 14, 2010 10:45 AM

    Further to this, I have now found a suitable resolution to this that doesn't require an external client.
    There is a jdbc setting that will allow you to use EUS password authentication.
    Add the jdbc line option (below) in the sqldeveloper.conf file (backup the sqldeveloper.conf file first).
    AddVMOption -Doracle.jdbc.thinLogonCapability=o3
    The sqldeveloper.conf file can be found wherever you have installed sqldeveloper, under <INSTALL_HOME>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf.
    After you add this option, restart SQL Developer and you should be able to use your EUS username / password to authenticate via SQL Developer.

  • How do i get a output in CSV of a SQL query executed via SQL Command prompt

    Hi All,
    I have a question with reference to SQL command prompt. I have a sql query which runs properly and gives proper execution in SQL Management console in GUI.
    This report is used to pull the free disk space report of our servers
    As i want to schedule it as a report so i want to script it to run via SQL command prompt. I made the script and it works fine if i enter it in SQL command prompt. When i try to extract the output to a CSV File it fails. Below is the details of the command
    i am using to query to pull the data. Can anyone help me in getting the output of this query in SQL command prompt.
    sqlcmd -W -s , -S Servers FQDN
    use operationsmanager
    Go
    Query:"select Path, InstanceName, SampleValue
    from PerformanceDataAllView pdv with (NOLOCK)
    inner join PerformanceCounterView pcv on pdv.performancesourceinternalid = pcv.performancesourceinternalid
    inner join BaseManagedEntity bme on pcv.ManagedEntityId = bme.BaseManagedEntityId
    where SampleValue < '20' and CounterName='% Free Space' and TimeSampled > '2014-08-06 11:00:00.00'
    order by countername, timesampled" -s "," -o "C:\DataSqlCmd.csv"
    Go
    When i enter the command without the quotes when the query is starting and ending and also without the output command (-s "," -o "C:\DataSqlCmd.csv") it is working and shows the output in the command prompt. Below is the screen shot for
    your reference.
    Due to security reasons i have to erase the server names:
    But when i add the line to extract the output ( -s "," -o "C:\DataSqlCmd.csv") It gives me this error:
    The exact command would be:
    sqlcmd -W -s , -S CINMLVSCOM01.e2klab.ge.com
    use operationsmanager
    Go
    "select Path, InstanceName, SampleValue
    from PerformanceDataAllView pdv with (NOLOCK)
    inner join PerformanceCounterView pcv on pdv.performancesourceinternalid = pcv.performancesourceinternalid
    inner join BaseManagedEntity bme on pcv.ManagedEntityId = bme.BaseManagedEntityId
    where SampleValue < '20' and CounterName='% Free Space' and TimeSampled > '2014-08-06 11:00:00.00'
    order by countername, timesampled" -s "," -o "C:\DataSqlCmd.csv" -h-1
    Go
    saying the syntax is not correct or some thing as per the below screenshot.
    Can any one please help. Below is just the query whi i use to get the output in SQL management studio.
    Can any one make a command for the below quer so i can directly execute and test for getting the output.
    select Path, InstanceName, SampleValue
    from PerformanceDataAllView pdv with (NOLOCK)
    inner join PerformanceCounterView pcv on pdv.performancesourceinternalid = pcv.performancesourceinternalid
    inner join BaseManagedEntity bme on pcv.ManagedEntityId = bme.BaseManagedEntityId

    order by countername, timesampled
    Gautam.75801

    Can you try the below query?
    select Path, InstanceName, SampleValue
    from PerformanceDataAllView pdv with (NOLOCK)
    inner join PerformanceCounterView pcv on pdv.performancesourceinternalid = pcv.performancesourceinternalid
    inner join BaseManagedEntity bme on pcv.ManagedEntityId = bme.BaseManagedEntityId
    where SampleValue < 20 and CounterName like '% Free Space' and TimeSampled > '2014-08-06 11:00:00.00'
    order by countername, timesampled
    -- replace the below query part in the below SQLCMD C:\>SQLCMD -S SERVERNAME -E -d operationsmanager -Q "select * from sys.databases ds with (nolock) where name='master'" -s "," -o "F:\PowerSQL\MyData.csv" -h -1
    SQLCMD -S SERVERNAME -E -d OperationsManager -Q "select Path, InstanceName, SampleValue
    from PerformanceDataAllView pdv with (NOLOCK)
    inner join PerformanceCounterView pcv on pdv.performancesourceinternalid = pcv.performancesourceinternalid

    where SampleValue < '20' and CounterName='% Free Space' and TimeSampled > '2014-08-06 11:00:00.00'

  • Create new database in XE via GUI console

    I would liek to know if it possible to create a new database in Oracle 10g Express Edition via the GUI Web console other than the existing XE database? If not, is there another way via SQL?

    XE is limited to a single instance, and an instance can only open one database at a time.
    You should be able to close the 'current database' (shutdown and startup nomount) and create a new database 'create database' through SQL, but I wouldn't see a lot of point to the exercise (except as a learning exercise, where you'd be better off using a Standard/Enterprise Edition).
    There'd be no way to do the creation through an Apex application, as Apex itself has to run in a database so wouldn't survive the closure of the current database.

    Obviously, I would like to get this setup to work, but I also have couple other questions regarding this setup.
    1. When installing the gateway, it asks to run the root.sh script.  the root.sh script as for the following.
    Enter the full pathname of the local bin directory: [/usr/local/bin]:
    The file "dbhome" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: n
    The file "oraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: n
    The file "coraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: n
    is the above answer correct?

  • Using Proxy User Authentication in Sql Developer

    Hi!
    Is it possible to use proxy user authentication in SQL Developer? I'm thinking that if I'm clever enough, I can craft a custom jdbc URL that will allow my users to proxy authenticate into my Oracle 10gR2 database while using SQL Developer.
    Unfortunately, I'm not feeling all that clever. ;)
    Can anybody help me out here? Is it even in the realm of possibility?
    Thanks!

    I found the possibility that proxy authentication of both accounts can be enforced:
    SQL> alter user appuser grant connect through personaluser AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED;
    I guess that this is the motivation for implementing the 2-session proxy connection method in SQL Developer.
    Regards,
    Martin

    In numbers you can add a checkbox that users can toggle off and on. This feature is not available in Pages. Can numbers features/tables be imported into pages or possibly added via Applescript? I haven't found a way to do this.
