X1 Carbon - battery maintenance utility not available

My X1 came with windows 8 installed, but the thinkpad utilities does not include the battery maintenance utility that I use to manage the battery charge levels.
Is this intentional for win 8, or can I install it and expect it to work fine?
Thanks,
Sebouh

Battery maintenance is not supported in the X1 Carbon with Windows 8 (Lenovo did not release the battery maintenance for Windows 8).

Because that is a decision the Apple made.  You can get the battery percentage (within 5%)  by using a free app such as BatteryLife Lite, but it will not show the percentage on the top of your screen.

  • My external hard drive is not recognized by Time Machine; "The backup disk is not available" according to Disk Utility

I'm not completely tech savvy, but I'm having troubles with my external memory & time machine.  I'm a student, and thus its very important to me to be able to back up my computer.
I wanted to back up my Time Machine the other day.  I clicked the icon at the top of the page (beside the battery icon, etc.) and the message "The backup disk is not available".  I have a 500GB Seagate passport (ie: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate---FreeAgent-GoFlex-500GB-External-USB-2.0-Po rtable-Hard-Drive---Silver/9929098.p?id=1218196478444&skuId=9929098)
My macbook pro is version 10.7.5 Mac OS X Lion.  My external memory is only about a year old. It hasn't been dropped or anything; it permanently sits secured to my desk.
What appears when I click "Repair Disk":
Verify and Repair volume “Time Machine Backups”
Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Detected a case-sensitive volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file shutdown_time
(It should be 1 instead of 0)
    Invalid node structure
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume Time Machine Backups could not be repaired.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
After clicking "Repair Disk" this message pops up: "Disk Utility Stopped Repairing 'Time Machine Backups'  Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many as your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I don't want to wipe my memory on my external disk just in case the disk doesn't restore (as I do not have another disk to back up my computer on to).
What is going on? Why is this happening out of the blue? How can I fix this?

Sounds like it either has, or is about to die.
If you don't need anything off the old drive, then yes, replace it immediately with something a little more reolaable. I use WD Caviar Black personally. But anything that has a known low failure rate.

  • "battery not available", battery not charging

I just bought a NuPower battery fo my IBook G4. It's been working fine for a month or so. However, now my computer won't charge the battery. Near the battery icon at the top of the screen, it at first says "caluculating..." and then says "battery not available". Further, sometimes even when the power cord is plugged in (and the LED's are lit up), it still runs on the battery power and says the power is not plugged in. And, the lighting on the LED's do not correspond at all with the battery charge(i.e. it is sometimes green even though there is no battery power). Maybe these are 2 different problems?
Any advice would be appreciated-I'm no where near a MAC service provider.

There are two things you could try.

  • When I go to install OS X on the disk utility I got a prompt telling me that Mac 10.7 is not available. I am connected to the internet. What do I do in order to install OS?

My laptop was running slow while in the regular mode, but in safe mode it would work fine. I deleted all of the content through the disk utility. Once I would go back to the recovery mode prompt and click on install os I go to the next page and get a prompt that says mac os x 10.7 is not available. There also is no picture to the left of the OS system like most people have on their recovery mode screen on the install option. Please help!
    Thanks!

That might do.  There is the 'poor man's' alternative.  Take a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) and wrap it around a business card.  Insert it gently into the slot.  Some times it works.  Do not dismiss the possibility that the DVD drive is kaput.
I did purchase this laptop from my brother a couple years ago. He told me the first operating system that was on the laptop was OS X 10.6. He gave me the disc to install,
According to the information that I have, a Mid 2009 MBP came with Leopard (10.5).  You will have to install Leopard (if you have the original disk) or purchase from the online store a Snow Leopard (10.6.3) retail disk.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
This disk is a requisite in order to install and run Lion (10.7) or any other newer OSX.  You have to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 before downloading and installing Lion.
    Ciao.

  • RAID Utility software not available in OS X Mavericks?

Up till yesterday I have been using a RAID card in my Mac Pro (Mid 2010, 4 x 1 TB SATA, initially as RAID-5, now in a RAID-10 setup) under OS X 10.8.5 without any issues, and the RAID utility allowed me to check the status od me disks, event log, and the battery status / refresh cycles for the RAID card. Last night now I upgraded to OS X Mavericks. The upgrade went well, things appear to work OK, obviously at least half of my RAID-10 array is in use — however, I can't find the RAID utility, check the status of the RAID-10 system and the battery status of the RAID card. The disk utility shows the RAID set - but none of the underlying features (individual disks and their status, logs, battery) — am I thrown back to a soft RAID, and my investment into a RAID card has evaporated?

Thanks a lot, Seliqui! the reason why I did not find it is that a) after the upgrade to Mavericks, the icon that I previously had parked in the dock no longer worked, and b) the new location for the utility can't be found anywhere on the Launchpad. I suspect both effects are an indication that they missed to add the new directory to the command path. I can hardly imagine that this was deliberate because if you have a RAID card you definitely want to have access to that utility — not just in case of a disk failure (I have had a couple of these!), but also in order to stop the user from doing things one is not supposed to do while the battery is reconditioning.

    Thanks for the post.
    The link also says

To acquire data from Microsoft URS, you will have to register with DataMarket at Windows Azure DataMarket and subscribe to Microsoft URS on the Microsoft Utility Rate Service subscription page. For more information about how to create an application by using
data from DataMarket, including information about how to use Access Control Service, see Create a DataMarket Application on MSDN.
We have already registered with DataMarket but unable to Subscribe to the URS in there.
For most of the datasets, we get options on the Right Hand side of the Screen to purchase the services. Where as for URS, it says "Not available in your Market".
What should we do to get it in our market and start utilizing the services.
It would be great if you could help us in understanding where are we going wrong.

  • Battery recalibration not available

I am looking for a way to force my laptop to run a low level calibration on my battery.
After I did a Factory Restore on my computer's software. my battery abruptly went from approx 1.5 hr life to approx 6 minutes life  (it claimed the newish battery was the same age as the computer itself and from that point on the battery life was shot) ... since I figure that the battery itself is actually undamaged and the software is somehow just confused I would like to try a recalibration but the option is not available when I go into Diagnostics in the Startup menu. (other options like hard disk are there; just nothing for battery).  I would like to find an alternate way to access this procedure  ... incidentally, HP Support Assistant says the battery is good, and HP Advisor Dashboard says Condition: Unknown
Background:  This computer (dv6-1330ca - Win7 64) has previously wrecked a battery in a somewhat similar way ... at that time I had a well running battery but decided to follow HP advice and calibrate (I regret doing that as the battery had been fine at the time, but the web site suggested that if you only infrequently unplugged you should probably recalibrate once a month or so) ... immediately upon following the instructions, the battery went from 2 hrs to 5 minutes of life ... after consulting on this forum and with HP tech support I just gave up and got a new battery ... but you can be **bleep** sure I never ran calibration on it!  Anyway, maybe 6mos later I decided to use HP System Restore for a fresh start, and, YEAH! ... another wrecked battery!  I know it's something specific to this computer, which makes it seem likely it may be fixable ... BTW I have a very similar computer (HP dv6410 ca) still running respectable discharge times on its original battery so I know it is nothing to do with either my usage or the environment.  Unfortunately the batteries are not compatible.
If it helps, I can take measurements from the battery ... I am a (no longer in practice) Electrical Engineer and have access to typical small diagnostic equipment.

Well, an update ... I have once again (sigh) replaced the battery and crossed my fingers ... but there is no way that this is not a software issue; I have darn near  the identical HP laptop except running Vista; it's a couple of years older than this one but is stlll running satisfactory times on it's original battery.  This dv6-1330ca on the other hand  is on its 3rd  battery and in each case that battery had been running just fine the day before, then abruptly it became a 5 minute battery.  This time I saw no point in buying the HP recommended battery, so at least the replacement cost less.
I'll just keep toughing things out until I finally decide if I'm going with Win8, but I am not a happy camper.  I usually replace hardware at least once for each OS, and that has almost always been HP;  but as a separate issue  Win8 really has me wondering.

  • Nokia belle battery monitor not available in your ...

    Hi,
I live in Taiwan and have a newly purchased Nokia 701. I would like to install the  Nokia Battery Monitor V3.0 which I gather to be designed for Nokia Belle.
When I search for it on the Nokia Store I get no results. When I try to follow the link
    http://store.ovi.com/content/132519
    I get the message
Sorry, this item is not available for your country.
    And if I try
    http://store.ovi.com/content/132519/download
then I get an internal server error.
Does anyone know whether there is a good reason why this app is not available here, even in an English version, which is all I want.
Alternately, does anyone know where else I might get it from, or have the email address from the Nokia store for support issues about the product?
    With thanks

  • GS70 - Battery Calibration utility does not work (any longer)

    Hi folks
Just got myself a brand new GS70 Stealth notebook. I got the pre-installed battery calibration utility to run OK once, but a few days laters it just quickly flashes 2 windows one after the other and is gone / crashed.
Of course it might be something I did (upgraded BIOS, drivers, installed some apps), but I still need to find out what, otherwise it might happen again even after I reset to factory settings.
I scanned all 33 threads of this forum found with the search "battery calibration", and found only one which describes something similar:
      https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165389.0;nowap
However the symptoms are not the same (I have Windows 8 and my other utilities KLM & SCM are working fine), and that thread is too old anyway. So a couple of questions to the community:
    1) does anybody experience the same failed start issue, with GS70 or other?
    2) can anybody advise on how to debug the battery calibration utility to try and find out where it crashed? (found no logfile)
(note: I also tried to upgrade .NET to 4.5.1 as it seems to be used, no change)
I will eventually contact MSI about this, but I thought that I would ask around first. Thanks for any help...

Okay, just found the answer by myself: The battery calibration utility depends on a service "Micro Star SCM" (MSIService.exe), which I had disabled.
Setting the service start mode to "manual" was enough to solve the problem, the utility starts again.
Hope this can help someone else.
