X1 Carbon: Sandisk SSD or Toshiba SSD? Good/Poor? LCD Good/Poor?

Initially, may have said that the SSD in X1 Carbons were Sandisk SSDs, and that they performed very poorly on 4K speed tests - which are true when one looks at these reviewers doing 4K tests.   So...that's a bummer.
Then, someone posted a teardown picture of the inside of an X1Carbon, which showed a Toshiba SSD.
Which SSD is the one that will go inside the consumer X1 Carbons rather than the reviewers' early samples?  Confusing.  Whichever one it is, is it any good including its poor 4K performance?   I mean real life performance: any good?
Also, most say the LCD is rather nice on the x1C.   they mostly said that for a 14", the 1600x900 hits an excellent sweetspot.   the Z 2012's 1080 was downright annoying when i tried it out last week because on every single website, one needed to do Control ++++++ to increase the size, otherwise, you'd not be able to read it!!   1080 is too much resolution for a 13.1" LCD on the Z 2012.
Then, the Engadget review just posted today says that one sees space around each pixel on the x1c's LCD!!   they didn't quite like the LCD on the x1C!!!    can that be true?  or is that an early reviewer's sample??    Highly conflicting points of views, right?
i can't believe that the pitch is so poor on the 14" 1600x900.   that just doesn't sound right to me.
any ideas from the good folks on this forum?

What a nightmare!
The technician came over and opened the computer and was not able to put the cable in the correct place. Forced with his tools the cable against the case and damaged the laptop exterior case either in the back and either at monitor level and base level.
Amazing: now not only the cable is still there but I got scratches from tools all over.
I reported it to Lenovo and apparently the technician reported that he replaced the cable and the problem disappeared. 
I hope someone fires the guy!
Lenovo told me that they are going to prepare another action plan so now I am curious of what the next guy will do.....
I will avoid to make further comments for now.... let's wait for the scenes in the upcoming chapters.

  • New Sandisk SSD Plus on 2011 Macbook Pro is slow

    Before I get into my issue here are some screen shots of system information.
    I have recently installed a new Sandisk SSD on my early 2011 Macbook pro. After install of 0S and waited for finder to do its things I tested read and write speed using Black Magic Speed Test. My results are shown below.
    ACTIVITY MONITOR
    WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TRIED.
    Used disk utility to verify disk and repair no issues found one problem found when repairing disk permissions but it was repaired.
    Fresh install of OS 10.7
    NAVRAM reset.
    Verified disk was actually selected in systems preferences.
      Im at a standstill I have ran out of ideas of what it could be. I cannot appear to find anyone else who did not resolve this issues by following one or more of the steps above. 

    I searched that kernel process that is shown eating up my CPU and applied to following commands in Terminal.

    Command to check ModelIdentifier of your Mac:

    Command to list the names of ModelIdentifier in Resources directory of your Mac:

    [Please Replace YourModelIdentifier.plist with Your Model Identifier.plist  name. Like mine was MacBookPro8_2.plist. In My Case the command will be: sudo mv MacBookPro8_2.plist /users]

    will this SanDisk SSD Extreme II 480gb: SDSSDXP-480G-G25 fit and work in my 2008 unibody macbook?

    go to applications > utilities > system info > SATA, if the SATA chipset is Nvidia MCP79 the SATA link speed will not be negotiated correctly. This is an issue with the Nvidia SATA chipset. SanDisk has not released a FW that locks Extreme II SSD to SATA 3Gb so the link speed will only be 1.5Gb. If you can find the original Extreme SSD you can use the FW linked in this thread to lock the Extreme SSD to SATA 3Gb.

  • MacBook Pro Retina SanDisk SSD electronic noise

    I ordered an rMBP 15 with the 512 SSD from SanDisk and had id exchanged 3 times. All of them were making an electronic noise when accessing the SSD. In the Store however older models with Samsung SSDs made no noise at all. Finally I cancelled my order of the 512 rMBP where all the currently produced models emply SanDisk SSD and reordered the same configuration but with the 768 SDD which is from Samsung only. I would rather prefer the 512 SSD but I had to pay the overpriced 768 to get a silent rMBP. They all should be silent. My former MBP 15 with Crucial SSD 256 I couldn’t hear anything holding my ear to it but the fans at very high CPU load.
    I hope I am right and the 768 rMBP that I did’t receive yet will be absolutely silent and satisfy my requirement for silence. The sound is very annoying especially when working at quiet places. So for me this action will be worth it. I’ve lost a lot of time to find this out and through exchanging though.
    Apple, how can you please stop employ those noisy SanDisk SSDs in your flagship device? Your customers shouldn’t be receiving hardware with second class parts. Please, stop installing SanDisk SSD and be friends with Samsung again.

    My guess was wrong. The ordered rMBP 15" 768 SSD has the exact same electronic noise issue. And it got even worse: there is dent on the bottom case. Quality control is very disappointing.
    I cancelled both the first and the second order and ordered a MacBook Air 13" instead hoping that it won’t produce that noise. And learned never to buy a first generation Mac again.

  • MacBook Pro and SanDisk SSD

    I'm having a bit of trouble with upgrading my 15'' early 2011 MacBook Pro: I've removed the optical drive and installed a SanDisk SSD in it's place (with an adapter case). I want to have OS X running on the SSD and use the old HDD that is also installed in the machine as file storage. I've tried installing OS X, but keep getting issues like "target disk seems to be invalid", and if I retry the install my SSD may disappear from the list of available drives (even after exiting the installer and restarting). It then reapers randomly.
    What I'd like to know is if this can have anything to do with it being in the optical drive slot. I've read somewhere that it sometimes doesn't work properly. Are there any chances I can just swap them out if this is the case, or will the drives most likely not fit in each others spots. I've also stumbled on something regarding TRIM, is this something I should look into?

  • Is a 64GB SSD good enough for a primary boot drive on a Macbook Pro?

    My hard drive just failed and I am thinking of going the SSD way - installing a 64GB SSD as my bootable drive and taking out my optical disc to install a 500GB HDD. Will the 64GB work for my purpose? Or do I need to go higher? Thanks!

    I would go with a min of 128GB personally, ideally a 256GB drive is best, but depends on what you are going to run as to how much space you will require.

  • Leopard on regular HD / other apps on SSD / Good ??

    Hello,
    The shop where i've bought my new mac pro installed leopard on the standard Harddisk, i also have a SSD where i've installed all Adobe and 3d software... Photoshop for instance is not always that fast, sometimes even hangs a few seconds when opening a simple 500kb jpg image (saved on the SSD). I've read lots of stories about the super fast SSD but until now i am not impressed, could that be cause of that Leopard is installed on the standard harddisk? If so can i just install Leopard on the SSD without re-installing all other software?

    New Mac Pro + CS5 and OWC SSD along with 3 x 8GB or 6 x 4GB should do very well.
    SSDs are best place for OS and applications together; or for scratch (when you don't have enough RAM).
    Some people even use a pair of SSDs in stripe volume.

  • Are there adapters for the proprietary SSD drives in the X1 carbon?

    That can be used to convert it to a normal commercial sized SSD drive so it can be used in a duplicator. 
    The company I work for are switching to these Carbon X1 laptops for deployment and this will conflict with our current process of reimaging which is cloning our systems using the SATA duplicator.   
    Is there a product available that will allow us to convert these small sized SSD drives so they can fit into the SSD SATA duplicator we have that supports commercial sized SSD drives?

    I am happy with a 240/250 GB SSD but unsure which model would suit best. Because of the SATA II limitation what benefit would i see with a higher end EXtreme Pro SSD over a cheaper model?
    The higher end SSDs have higher IOPS than the lower end SSDs so you would see a little snapper response from the OS but the over all throughput would still be limited to SATA II speed due to the SATA interface of the computer. 
    Because the SATA is II can you just half the SATA III performance spec for a SSD interfaced to a SATA II controller ? Will it not run at the 3 GB limit ?
    Overall throughput will be limited to 3Gb theoretical. You will probably see close to 300MB/s
    Without the sandisk software tools for Mac how can i update the SSD's firmware using a bootable USB stick, my CD/DVD drive has stopped functioning ?

    I am interested in sandisk because of TRIM support on both the SSD and OSX 10.10.4.

  • How do I copy the removed SSD drive from a water-damaged MB Pro to another Mac?

    My son's MacBook Pro (early 2012) was ruined by a pint of water. The insurance company kept the laptop but returned its 256GB SSD drive. I've looked everywhere online – Apple's telephone support is as good as useless given they want a serial number and want to charge me £35 – for a caddy or SATA adaptor of some sort to copy files from the Sandisk SSD drive. I basically need something I can plug the SSD drive into that has a USB lead to plug it into another Mac so I can copy photos, word docs and MP3s. I can't believe it could be so difficult - it's just a hard drive, after all. Your help greatly appreciated.

    This should do the trick, and will work with laptop and desktop drives too. And it doesn't rely on power from the USB port to make the drive work, which can sometimes be an issue.

  • Best SSD to DIY a Fusion Drive.

    Hi there, I'd like to know if any of you have personally a SSD brand you trust.  I once purchased a SanDisk SSD for my work computer which failed before a year of usage.  Later I purchased a Crucial/Micron SSD for my iMac which seems to be failing now, around only over 6 months of usage.  I've replaced the SanDisk with a Kingston in my work computer but I'm not sure if it'll last at all.
    For my iMac, though I've lost confidence in SSDs and I feel tempted to rely solely on the HDD, I'd like to know if you can advise other very reliable SSD options since the speed of a Fusion Drive is just spectacular.

    Do a Google search on the various brands and read the reviews about them. I haven't read of any that are outright unreliable. I haven't seen complaints about these drives failing in this forum or on PC forums. Like any piece of electromic equipment some will fail, that goes for SSD's as well as HDD's.
    When you installed this SSD did you take precautions against static? Are you sure you followed all the steps in the installation process EXACTLY? Opening a newer iMac and installing a drive (SSD or HDD) is frought with pittfalls. One bad move and you can create big problems for yourself. With that said I've installed 3 HDD's and 2 SSD's in three different iMacs without problems. However I am very careful to work in a static free environment (wrist strap, static mat, etc.) I handle the components as little as possible, and take care that they are seated properly inside the iMac. It's very easy to pinch a cable or do something that will come back and bite you.
    I mentioned MacSales because buying from a good vendor is just as important as buying a good component. I know MacSales stands behind what they sell, and that's important to me. (I am not connected in any way with MacSales, except being a satisfied customer)

  • Question: Updating T61 with SSD and Win 7 64bit?

    First, my apologies for giving up so quickly and posting after my initial searching.  The support pages and forums have changed considerably since I've been here last and drivers/updates don't seem as easy to find as they were before.
    I have a  2008-2009 era T61 / Nvidia 140M currently running XP.  It's still in good shape running well so I've decided to add memory, a Crucial SSD drive (listed as compatible on their site advisor tool) and Windows 7 64 bit.
    My plan is to:
    (1) Update BIOS which is currently on 2.25 to latest (good idea or bad?) and consider middleton later if things are stable
    (2) Install SSD drive making sure BIOS is set to AHCI (and I've checked to see there are no firmware updates for the drive from manufacturer)
    (3) Install Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
    (4) Install Lenovo System Update application and run
    (5) Run Windows update
    Will this give me all I need or do I need to download some things, e.g. drivers,  separately before starting the Windows install?
    I see the Thinkvantage tools of the past (Prodcutivity center, Tool Box, etc) are gone and apparently replaced by Lenovo Solutions Center. The T61 is not listed as supported.  Is there an alternative I missed?
    (6) Install other apps, utilities, etc.

  • Macbook Air 2014 samsung ssd

    Hello everyone,
    I'm new to this forum and I just wanted to ask, because I'm wondering, if there are any MacBook Airs of 2014 with a Samsung SSD?
    I've read a lot of the slower Sandisk an Toshiba SSD's which showed up in many speed comparisions between the 2013 and 2014 model.
    But, I just ordered a 2014 Model anyway, with i5, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD... But I'm not sure if I should send it back if there is a Toshiba or Sandisk SSD in it.
    I searched this forum and found quite a lot of informations, but nothing regarding if there ARE Samsung SSD's in the 2014 models or not.

    I know that I can identify the ssd manufacturer via the apple menu.
    And I know that there are Sandisk, Toshiba and Samsung SSD's... At least in 2013.
    The question is, are there 2014 mba too with a Samsung SSD?
    Because I read on this forum that the $100 off are because of the slower SSD.
    So, does anyone have a 2014 mba with a Samsung SSD??

    Given current prices, I would like to upgrade my hard drive on my early 2008, Macbook Pro (4.1, pre-unibody) and also upgrade my OS (Snow Leopard to Yosemite).
    The hard drive in this Macbook pro has a Sata I connection and I am wondering what my best SSD options are in 2014.
    I am most concerned about issues of potential backward compatibility of Sata III with SataI.
    I understand Sata III should be be backward compatible with Sata I, but I've seen that some people have had issues with this.
    So I am wondering if anyone has actually made this upgrade with any of the newer SSD drives that are available (Samsung 840 Evo, SanDisk Extreme Pro, Crucial m550) and how it has worked out?
    I understand OWC sells compatible drives, but given the great prices on these newer drives, I am leaning towards a more current drive with all it's modern goodness (longevity+controller) with the understanding that my Sata I connection will be a bottleneck.
    I am also curious about whether I should just look for older Sata II SSDs? For this I would need recommendations.
