X100e LCD monitor black

I left my computer running when I went to have lunch.  When I returned about 2 hours later, the screen was black.  I assumed that it was in hibernation, but the screen did not reapper when I opened and closed the lid or when I pressed the start button. The start button was backlit green as if the computer was on.   I disconected the power supply and removed and reinserted the battery but when I restarted I had the same condition.
Yesterday, just to be sure, I plugged in an external monitor and when I started the computer,  I had the startup repair screen.  After a while, startup repair informed me that it could not reapir the condition and gave me the option of starting windows normally.  When I did this, the LCD screen came to life and I had both screens active.  Thinking that the condition was now corrected, I shut down and disconnected the external monitor.  When I restarted, the LCB stayed black.  I reconnected the external monitor it works fine.  However, in my device list, the only monitor listed is the external monitor.  The computer does not seem to detect the LCD.  I checked the update list to see if display updates had occurred around the time of the problem but all I saw was an update of Lenovo Thinkpad Display 1366x768 that occurred about two weeks before this problem.
I might also mention that this occurred two days after my warranty expired.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I have good news, I guess.
I started the computer to try your suggestion and to my surprise, the LCD was working again.  I did the hard disk diagnostic anyway and it found nothing wrong.
Then, when Windows started the computer configured a Windows update (Security update for Windows Service Pack 1) and seems to be working normally.
I shut down and started up again and it all seems normal.  So, it doesn`t look to me like a hardware fault.
In thinking back on what I did after I posted my original message, the only thing that comes to mind is that I uninstalled and reinstalled the Thinkpad Toobox. After the problem started and once I had access to the computer via the external monitor,  I had been getting a message that Toolbox was unable to update so I reinstalled it.
I`m thinking that my problem is somehow related to the power management routines.  I have experienced less severe freeze-ups occasionally after a hibernation/sleep mode occurrence.  From reading some of the posts on this community it seems that there may be conflicts between Windows and Lenovo power management. Perhaps I may need to focus on that aspect.  I must admit that I have ignored it until now.  What do you think of that idea.
I will also investigate extending the warranty right away.

  • Satellite L - LCD monitor flashing black after desktop loads

My LCD monitor has started flashing black at startup. It doesn't do it if I log off and log back in, only on startup. I can log in, the desktop loads and everything looks normal then after about 7 seconds everything goes black, then the taskbar quickly appears then disappears and then the desktop becomes visible again momentarily but goes black again. It repeats this very fast two or three times then starts normally.
Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. I disabled my antivirus so it wouldn't startup but that didn't help. I've done some registry cleaning lately so I restored everything back to well before this started and that didn't help either. I've done a lot of installing and uninstalling of software lately but can't pinpoint anything that might have caused it. This computer is about 2 years old. I have Vista 32 bit, service pack 2.
Anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas what the culprit might be? Really appreciate any advice.

OK, I connected a CRT monitor from another computer and it basically did it too. As the laptop screen was flashing off and on, the CRT screen went black and then came back on when the laptop went back to normal.
I think my graphics card is Intel Display Driver 7.15.10.1502. Does that sound right? I checked for an update through the Device Manager and it said no update is available. The same version is the only one listed at the Toshiba Downloads page. It's included with my Toshiba Application Installer so I'm tempted to uninstall/reinstall, but I'm afraid if it doesn't automatically install at at startup I won't have a monitor. Any advice on this or anything else is appreciated.

  • Studio 17" LCD went black

I have a 17" Studio LCD monitor connected to a Mac Mini intel via a DVI to ADC adapter. Last night when using the computer the screen suddenly went all black, as if the power was removed and I can not get the picture to return. The power indicator on the display is on and has power. Is it the monitor, the DVI to ADC adapter, something else? I've heard rumors of Leopard/display issues, but I had no issues till this. I will try to borrow a monitor, but don't know anybody with an ADC monitor. Does anybody have any solutions to what is going wrong?
    Thanks for your help!

  • New LCD Monitor Blinks On and Off

I just purchased a new 22" Visionmaster LCD monitor, connected via digital cable to my ATI Radeon 128Mb video card.
However, it tends to switch OFF to a black screen, and after about 5 seconds it comes back on. The screen displays the word DIGITAL in the upper right hand corner.
Why is this happening, and what can I do to avoid it?
It doesn't seem to like using the digital cable. It works fine using the standard VGA cable, however.
Can anyone comment on this? Is this particular card not compatible?
    Thanks!

Hello! Look in your system prefs under the screen saver and see if a "hot corner" is set. It sounds like the mouse is trying to trigger a screen saver or the "display slep" is set to only a few seconds. I've seen this type of behavior with my Dell screen and it's something I'm triggering with the mouse. Tom

  • Philips 22inch lcd monitor for mac pro

    hi there,
I have recently bought a philips 22 inch lcd monitor (220WS8) for my mac pro, but everytime when i start up the system, it keeps booting up with my old display setup (which was my old 15 inch monitor) and having a big black area on the right.
I have to reset it back to 1680 X 1050 everytime when i startup my system.
I was reading the manual and it suggest resetting the PRAM while starting up the system. That worked, but if I have to do this everytime when i turn on my computer, this is really annoying.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or know the solution to this?
    * by the way I am currently using the dvi > vga converter at the moment.
    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hello:
That's interesting. The first time I experienced the problem I was using a vga cable also. I've since switched to dvi.
I've had some strange issues with the 10.4.9 update though. Aside from the video problems the machine was logging itself off every few hours, some disk images ( .dmg and .iso ) refusing to mount, slowness and some USB devices acting strangely. I took it ( 10.4.9 ) off and everything is working great again. Some people have told me it's the 2007-005 security update causing the havoc.
Being an old windows machine convert I am used to straightening out software ( and hardware ) problems. I'd like to experiment and find out what is causing the issues, but I don't have enough spare time to tinker right now. My time is much better spent tending my web sites. The main reason I bought the Mac was to save time, knuckles and aggravation and so far it's done a great job of handling the work load demanded of it. I see now why Mac owners consider their Mac their friend.

  • External LCD monitors with DVI PowerBook: Banding Issues

I have a DVI PB and would like to attach an external LCD monitor. I've looked at both Samsung 20 inch and ViewSonic 19 inch versions but whenever I attach them, I get "banding" around the edges of the external monitor. Tonight, I went to CompUSA to look at the Samsung 204B 20 inch. Taking my PB with me, I hooked up and set the resolution to 1600 x 1200 and the Samsung had huge, fat black banding all around the monitor. If you don't know - banding looks like a large, black border going around the screen. The sales guy pushed some auto-set buttons (which is said always work to remove the banding) but it didn't fix the issue. Any suggestions? Is there some secret that I'm not aware of on how to attach and use an external LCD monitor with the PB? One note: I did set the resolution down to 1280 x 1024, which worked fine to remove the banding but it monitor looked horrible. Not the best resolution for a large monitor.
    Thanks,

Hi, Bill. I can't speak to whatever happened with the Viewsonic monitor, since you didn't tell us about that, but it sounds as though the Samsung was in display mirroring mode rather than extended-desktop mode. The F7 key on your Powerbook's keyboard toggles an external monitor between the two modes. In mirror mode, the external monitor displays exactly the same thing as the built-in display. In extended-desktop mode, it functions as a separate portion of your desktop, and you can drag things (windows, icons) from one monitor onto the other. If you're going to use both displays, extended-desktop mode is probably what you'll want: why keep two copies of the same thing in front of you?
In mirrored mode, the fact that your Powerbook's display has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 854 means that only 1280 x 854 pixels of the external monitor can be used — leaving wide black borders of untapped pixels around the copy of your PB's display that's centered on the external monitor. In extended-desktop mode, the external display's native resolution of 1600 x 1200 can all be used, provided that your 32MB of VRAM is sufficient to drive the total of (1280 x 854) + (1600 x 1200) = 3,013,120 pixels, at the bit depth you've selected. (You might have to use the extended-desktop mode in Thousands of colors, rather than Millions.)
Another issue that comes into play with display mirroring is that the 4:3 aspect ratio of the 1600 x 1200 Samsung is different from the 3:2 aspect ratio of the Powerbook's display. If you set the Samsung's resolution to 1280 x 1024 to match the pixel width of the PB display, the top and bottom of the Samsung will be black bands, because the PB isn't manufacturing any pixels to fill those bands. And it will be blurry, because the Samsung has to interpolate to make 1600 pixels look (sort of) like 1280 pixels. Unlike a CRT display, the actual number of pixels in an LCD is fixed. When you change resolution settings on an LCD from its native (maximum) resolution to anything less, the image is always blurred. Only the native resolution can be really sharp.

  • LCD monitor profiling: getting started

I have a cheap LCD monitor (Gem brand) I bought a year or so ago. It works okay for me but i've never calibrated and profiled it. I'd like to finally invest in a calibrator. I'm a click away from ordering the X-Rite EODIS2 Eye-One Display 2 as my quick research (thanks to this forum) says that's a fine choice.
Once I receive it I will take a serious look at my ambient light conditions and try to become comfortable living with less natural light in my workspace. I will also consider constructing a monitor hood.
Meanwhile I'll keep reading Real World Color Management.
Does it sound like i'm on the right track? Any advice / caveats at this stage welcome. Otherwise I'm sure you'll be hearing from me. :) Many thanks.

    The saga continues...
I've been watching Chris Murphy's lynda.com 'Color Management Essential Training' videos, which are very good but i'm still not sure I'm doing this properly. Here's the story:
He outlines a test to determine whether your LCD display's backlight is controlled via the Brightness or Contrast on-screen control: fill a new Photoshop file with black, and adjust each control independently to determine which shows a visible change in the solid black. After resetting my monitor to defaults, and trying this, it was obvious that the Contrast control was linked to the backlight.
Murphy then demonstrates profiling, using the same Eye-One Match software. He skips the 'Set the Contrast' portion in the software, as that relies on adjusting the Contrast control to adjust backlight. I did do it, because my monitor backlight does appear to be controlled by Contrast.
Next is the 'Set the White Point' portion, which involves adjusting RGB values separately. Chris says it's not a good idea for non-high-end LCDs -- that it's better for white point adjustment to occur in the video card LUT. So he skips that portion, and -- although my monitor does allow such independent adjustment -- i skip it as well.
Then it's 'Set the Luminance', where we use the Brightness control. In Chris' case he's adjusting the backlight. In my case, uh, I dunno what I'm adjusting exactly. Anyway, I can't get the current marker all the way down to the target value. With Brightness at 0, it's slightly above my target 90. (I wonder if this means my monitor is burning out, or it's an indicator I should have done the RBG adjustment stage?) But Chris encourages staying slightly above the target so there's a little room to come down later. I settle at 92.6.
Then calibration, correction curve, RGB->XYZ, and a display profile is born!
I learned from Chris that Eye-One Match includes a Monitor Validator feature. I do it and find my DE2000 is 2.56! Seems quite high. (Chris' was 0.78.) Does it mean my monitor just sucks, or is it an acceptable value, or is there something I need to adjust?
In other news, blinds are more closed (except for one window -- this room has lots of 'em), room is darker, I shall start wearing black. :)
Thanks for any perspective on any of this.

  • External LCD monitors - important specs???

    Hi,
I'm looking at getting an external 20" - 22" LCD monitor to go with my 15"MBP C2D.
Looking at the specs of various models, I'm wondering how important the contrast ratio is - it seems to vary from 500:1 to 800:1. I'm using the comp for video editing/design work and am keen on faithful colour reproduction.
I guess viewing angle is another important spec while response time is important for gamers. What are other specs to look out for? Pixel pitch? Display colour (is 16.2M adequate or should I hold out for 16.7M?)?
BTW, are there any third party models out there that offer additional USB/FW ports as the cinema displays do?
    Thanks, Sean

If color is important to you the most important thing to look out for is professional reviews; specs are secondary to that. On paper one monitor might have better specs than another... but when you look at the two side by side the lesser spec monitor can have better overall image quality.
Basically narrow down all the models/brands you can afford... and then start googling for reviews on them. You'll find lots of reviews on online mags like trustedreviews.com etc... but you dont need to search those sites... just search google. Read all the reviews and then you can make your mind up from there.
The profesional reviewers usually use software like DisplayMate to measure the performance of the monitors in loads of different areas of image quality... color gradients, bw gradients... shadows, midtones, hilights, grey-grey response time, black-white response time etc. The figures you see in specs usually dont mean much as they have a lot of marketing crap attached to them. E.g. most cheap monitors which boast hi response times usually omit the fact that they can achieve those response times because they use lower-bit depth panels... which mean dark gradients appear very banded etc. YOU wanna make sure your monitor has as little banding as possible. Also the contrast ratio which they boast arent always accurate... they may say 800:1 contrast ratio but for some reason when the contrast ratio is measured it is nowhere near that figure... whereas other brands/model quote more accurate figures....
So in short, google for reviews.... dont put all your faith in ONE review but read as many as you can and look for COMMON points from all reviews (e.g. one review may prefer model A over model B, and another review may prefer model B over model A... this can be down to personal taste... but lookout for what common things which both reviews say about both models.... that stuff is probably accurate).

  • LCD monitors

Ok given the choice of the upgrade to FCP Studio 2 and a new CRT HD monitor I have decided to buy the software, but can anyone reccomend a good HD LCD monitor ( good enough for colour grading) and one that will connect to my little Sony HDV deck which has an HDMI output.

walking around nab, i have yet to see an lcd worth a grain of salt, however the viewing experience was akin to walking through costco. i would have liked to have seen the newest eCinema offereings but the folks there were way too busy talking among themselves to talk to me.
sony was demo-ing it's new luma monitors and quite honestly, they do look better than their last horrendous offering. they also had a black tent set up with three monitors set up in row, apparently two were lumas and one was a crt. they all looked a bit different and i didn't feel it was a realistic viewing experience as who watches tv in total darkness?
another thing about sony which i found a bit hypocritical, lcd technology is touted to be so great and it was advertised in full force but for each camera set up around the colorful demo scene, the monitoring was done on a hanging bvm crt.
however, the way of the world is moving to lcd so before you buy anything, get a proper demo that includes viewing analog video as well. recently i supervised an analog video color session on an avid symphony and the viewing/grading monitor was a new panasonic 24 inch lcd. i'm not exaggerating when i say the analog scaling quality was absolutely abyssmal.

  • Monitor blacks out when booting with KVM Switch in the middle

    Hi
I have attached my Xserve with an iMac G5 to a KVM Switch. When I boot up the Xserve the monitor blacks out after the apple logo.
I know that the Xserve tries to autodetect the monitor. Apparently it fails in its job when the KVM is in the middle. Everything works well when I remove the KVM and connect the monitor directly to Xserve.
Any ideas how do I disable the monitor autodetect feature - or something?
Xserve (intel) Mac OS X (10.4.1) dkvm-4u KVM switch

    Hi all
I did try that. No luck.. Strangely enough, I realized that when the server boots up, the login screen defaults to 85HZ refresh rate. I found a site that explains the plist file that you can change to force it to 60HZ. What is weird it if I boot the Mac connected to another LCD, then move the cable to the KVM, it works. It almost seems like when the mac is booting, it sends some sort of signal just before the login screen comes up, that screws up this KVM. Tried updating firmware, still in the process of speaking with the KVM support people...
    very strange..

  • Annoying problem with LCD monitor and noise!!

I have MSI 6330 with 1.2 GHz Athlon (it has a built-in sound card), 384 RAM memory.
I just bought a new Cornea 17" LCD monitor with built in speakers.
When I connect the speakers to the sound card, there is an annoying static-like noise coming from the speakers, like an electric transformation sometimes causes. However, this sound is not "broadcasted" to the speakers, because even if I mute the speakers, the noise is still there, as long as there is a picture on the screen. When the monitor is turned off or shows black screen (such as during start up, or when in power-save mode) the noise disappear. The only way to eliminate this noise is buy reducing (almost to zero) the speakers volume, but then you can cannot hear anything at all, not even sound.
I got a new sound card (I thought it was the sound card problem) - same thing. I connected the monitor to a different computer and the problem is gone, which means - it is something with the computer, mobo, different device....something, I don't know what.
Any one have an idea what this could be?
    Thank you.

    Hi!
It could be that you have some problem with the monitor.
I have - so far - not encountered a monitor with built in speakers which gave acceptable sound anyway, the easiest solution might be that you will not use the speakers in the monitor (even the cheapest stand alone speakers will most likely produce better sound quality).

  • Connecting 2 LCD monitors to my Macbook?

    Hello Everyone.
Ok, before I go poking around and stuff something up, can someone please answer my following questions. I am wanting to connect two LCD 22inch monitors to my Macbook Pro.
    1. How do I do this?
    2. Instead of buying Apple screens, are there any other good LCD monitors that will do just a good a job?
    Please help.
    Thanks....I love my MAC

    1. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/corpo/products/home.php
    check graphic expansion modules
    2. for serious work I would strongly recommend eizo monitors. current apple displays simply cant compete with them. They are very outdated and therefore overpriced. they have poor adjusting possibilities..in both picture and stands.
