X11 and Matlab problems

I've been trying to install Matlab on my Powerbook, 10.4.11.
1) I insert the Matlab CD, start the installation, and it tells me I need to have X11 to run Matlab.
2) I insert the CD's that came with the Powerbook to install X11. I open the XCode tools folder, open the packages folder, and double-click on the X11SDK.pkg icon. It begins the X11 installation process. Mere seconds into the installation, it quits with an unnamed error.
3) I download X11 from download.com and attempt to install that. It tells me there is already a newer version of X11 on my computer.
4) I insert the Matlab CD and get the same error about not having X11 and needing it to run Matlab, but install anyway.
5) I attempt to open Matlab after installation and nothing happens.
6) I download a newer version of X11 from download.com and I'm still told that a newer version is on my computer.
7) I attempt to use finder and spotlight to find X11 on my computer with no luck.
8) I install XCode (hey, it starts with the same letter as X11 and is in the same folder, maybe it'll help!) because I'm getting desperate.
9) I attempt to install X11 again, getting the same error during the installation.
10) I bang my head on the wall until I realize that the friendly folks at Apple Discussions will probably have some insight.
Thanks much!

So, did your Powerbook come with 10.4 on CD (DVD) or an older version of OS X?
I think you should boot from the OS X 10.4 installer disc and select Custom Install to select the optional X11 installation package from there. I am not sure if it is safe to install these system files when you are running from that booted system. In any case, maybe you need to restart for the new installation of X11 to work.
You only need the X11 SDK and Developer Tools (XCode) to compile and build X11 applications from source code, like some of the GNU apps from the Fink project.
(Not sure if Matlab needs the SDK/XCode Tools or not, unless maybe you are using m-file stand-alone application compiler, or if it uses its own compiler?)

    I am having the same problems. I have sniffed the network connections and see that the Mac is returning the message "No protocol specified."
    My goal was to get an X client on a Linux system display to the X server on a Macintosh running 10.5.1 but got this message. I am able to start an X client (xclock, for example) on the Macintosh and have it display to the X server on Linux. After sniffing the networks, both sides are sending the same info but the Mac seems to be replying with that "no protocol specified" message. I have even tried a 10.4.11 system. In fact, I can't get the Mac's to display on each other; they can, however, of course, display locally.

  • X11 and tablet problem

    I'm running the Gimp (2.6.8) and using my tablet. I love the pressure support that now exists, but the trackpad seems to go away. To use a tablet, I need to set up gimp's Input preferences. Doing this however, disables the trackpad. Menu commands are accessible, but not one single tool works at all. I would like to use the trackpad for various tasks, but I don't want to have to remove tablet support each time.
    I'm wondering if anyone know why this is happening, or how to fix it. My guess is that the X11 environment is interpreting the trackpad as some type of incomplete secondary tablet, and not a mouse.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • X11 and X11 applications won't start

    I seem to be having a problem getting the X11 application, which I installed from the 'optional installs' package on the OS X installation DVD, working. I originally posted this elsewhere, but was advised to post it here, where people familiar with X11 might be able to help.
    I'll just quote what I posted elsewhere below, and hopefully someone can help.
    I seem to be having a problem with the X11 utility, which I installed off of the OS X DVD (from the 'optional installs' package), and a problem with The Gimp, both of which i think are probably related.
    Well I installed The Gimp a while ago, aswell as the X11 program, and both worked fine (you probably already know that The Gimp needs X11 to run). But at some point, it suddenly stopped working. I think it may have been after an update, but I really can't remember.
    The problem I was having with The Gimp is that it would go to start up, but just after the X11 icon appeared in the dock, the cursor would change to an X for a few seconds. The splash screen would come up, but it didn't even appear to have a background or progress bar or anything, and didn't do anything.
    At that point, just running X11 on it's own, or OpenOffice.org worked fine.
    Well recently, i've tried to run The Gimp again, and something different happens. The X11 icon comes up and starts bouncing in the dock, but after a few seconds, it closes again, and The Gimp tells me that it needs X11 to run (which I already have of course).
    When I try to run X11 on it's own, the same thing happens. The icon comes up in the dock, starts bouncing, then goes again.
    I've used the Console program in the Utilities folder, and both times, for both problems (when The Gimp had the funny splash screen and wouldn't start, when it wouldn't start up at all, and when X11 wouldn't start), I get the same few lines which might help, these are below:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
    (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
    _XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 1280x1024 @ (0,0)
    Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
    Quitting XDarwin...
    So now, I have The Gimp that doesn't work, X11 that doesn't work, and OpenOffice.org doesn't work either (same problem where X11 quits), which is rather annoying, since I could do with using The Gimp.
    I hope that explains my problem a bit, and I hope someone can help me sort it out. Thanks in advance for any help

    I have a similar problem that I described in a different forum, but was referred to this one and hope that someone can give me clue.
    My original message was:
    Hello,
    Brandnew here and new to the Mac environment (former Windows user), so excuse for anything dumb as it may follow.
    Wanting to install GIS software (Grass GIS) it appears to require X11 application. Found the refence in Machelp to the topic on the Apple site. However, it doesn't provide a link to the actual software, just states it is on the Install disc. Indeed, there is a package on the install disk (under Xcode Tools/Packages) called X11SDK.pkg. I thought that this might be the required app, but after installation of the Xcode tools the Grass software still doesn't function (start-up screen only and error message indicating that there is no X11 found).
    Thus the question is: how do I properly install the X11 app and where do I find the software?
    I hope that someone can help me out (as the AppleCare helpdesk doesn't seem to function today). Many thanks in advance.

  • I downloaded gimp+x11 and message says can't uninstall -help please

    I downloaded gimp with X11 and want to uninstall it but an icon of a hard drive is in my sidebar under my mac hard drive icon  with  gimp X11 on it   and when I tried to drag it to the trash, a message popped up saying "can't = put it in trash because gimp cannot be uninstalled" . Please help me. I have an older version of adobe creative suite but wanted a simpler paint program to merge art and photos. I desperately want to uninstall gimp because it is not even as good as Tuxpaint which my granddaughter uses at school and which I realized has options of photo merging also and seems like a better designed program even if it is for kids. The only problem with Tuxpaint is enlarging its canvas or workspace window and I haven't yet found how to export it's images but my granddaughter loves it and will flip when she realizes she can load photos from her digital camera, I hope. My main problem though is getting rid of gimp.  Thank you for your help.

    It sounds like you have a disk image mounted. If that's so, unmount it by clicking the eject icon that appears when you mouse over it in the Finder sidebar, then move the image file (something like "Gimp.dmg") to the Trash.

    Hello all.
    First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't quite sure where to post this, seeing as X11, which i'm having problems with is a utility, I thought this might be the right place to post (it says about 'utilities' in the forum descriptions afterall).

    For the problem with /tmp you might see if there is any useful information in this discussion. I've seen a couple of other people with a problem involving /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID. Don't know what the scoop is on that. The directory is supposed to have two files: fonts.dir and fonts.scale. If you have the CID directory and it has the required files I'm afraid I don't know what else would need to be done, although running Repair Permissions from Disk Utility is something you might try. It doesn't hurt, might help, and shouldn't take too long. You might also try posting your problem in the UNIX discussions. You're more likely to attract the attention of people familiar with X11 problems and solutions in that forum.

  • How to input japanese text in x11 and openoffice

    I posted this question in the Mac OS section, but someone suggested that I post it here, too.
    I recently installed X11 on my computer to run OpenOffice.org. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to switch between languages. Normally, I use the hot keys shift-cmnd-space to toggle between languages, but on X11, it won't allow me to do that.
    I don't know very much about X11, and I only downloaded it because I needed it to use OOo. OOo seems to have the easiest way to to input furigana characters when typing in Japanese, so it would make my life a lot easier if I could use OOo when creating Japanese documents. I'm not hellbent on using OOo, but the furigna input seemed easier to do than with Word (also, word has been crashing a lot lately, so I thought I'd try something else). If anyone out there uses a different program with furigana capabilities, I'd be open to hearing about that, too. Especially if it's easier to configure.
    Either way, I still need to figure out how to get X11 to input different languages. Can I use the katoeri program in X11 to input Japanese characters? Do I need to install something else? I'd also like to be able to use French, so if I need to do something special for that, please let me know how to do that, too.
    Also, if you couldn't tell, I don't know anything about computers, open source or codes. I don't have unix on my computer, but figured maybe someone here might be able to help me. Please be patient with my ignorance about all this stuff!
    Thanks in advance

    Either way, I still need to figure out how to get X11 to input different languages.
    Not really. You wouldn't use X11 for anything other than OO I think.
    Do I need to install something else?
    Yes, after some more research it seems you need something called kinput2. You can search this forum for Japanese. Here is one item of possible interest:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5249892&#5249892
    I'd also like to be able to use French,
    No problem. You should be able to demonstrate that for yourself already, since it is the same as normal OS X apps. Do you know how to do that?
    I don't have unix on my computer
    Yes you do, OS X is based on Unix, and X11 requires it.

  • X11 Yellow-Cursor Problem: Still Not Solved

    Sorry for bringing this up again, but previous discussions (search for "X11 yellow cursor") are not active anymore, and the problem is unsolved. Let me briefly restate it for those who just joined in:
    When displaying X11 windows from Linux machines on Intel Macs using Apple's X-server, the cursor turns into a hardly visible yellow something. Apparently, the cause is related to some wrong assumption about the Endianness.
    There used to be a patch available (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060316124704289), but it was superseded by Apple's latest X11 update. The alternative solution suggested in that article (fiddling with the icon set on the Linux side) seems not work reliably - it doesn't for me.
    So the present situation is very unsatisfactory. I just bought iMacs for my research group and myself. Having tested all the software we need for our daily work (which includes X11) on my Powerbook G4, I thought I would be on the safe side. Now, we've run into this Intel-specific bug, which annoyingly enough seems to be understood and solved, but Apple decided not to correct it in its latest X11 release.
    I would highly appreciate any suggestions how to work around the problem for the time being. And I hope that somebody at Apple is reading this: The usefulness of Macs in a Linux/Unix-dominated scientific-computing environment critically depends on the availability of a reliable, stable X11 implementation.

    Hi Hans,
    but it was superseded by Apple's latest X11 update.
    What do you mean by "superseded"? The patch
    http://homepage.mac.com/lycestra/yellowcursor.patch
    works well with the latest Apple's X11 source code.
    Just download X11-0.46.4.tar.gz from
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.4.9.x86/
    and put it in the same directory as yellowcursor.patch
    Then you can apply the patch as follows:
    $ tar zxvf X11-0.46.4.tar.gz
    $ cd X11-0.46.4
    $ patch -p1 < ../yellowcursor.patch
    Now you can build everything by
    $ cd xc
    $ make World >& logfile
    I guess it will take 20 to 30 minutes.
    (build may be faster if you add some definitions into config/cf/host.def)
    After the build, don't run "make install". Instead, just install the new Xquartz. Be sure to backup the origianl:
    $ sudo mv /usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz /usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz.ORG
    $ sudo cp -n programs/Xserver/Xquartz /usr/X11R6/bin/
    You may compare the output of xdpyinfo and glxinfo before and after installing it. I have noticed any performance difference between the original and the new Xquartz.

    I'm not sure that OpenOffice uses your system fonts directly (could be wrong), but I know NeoOffice/J does and I'm not seeing the problem you describe.

  • X11 and Remote KDE desktop

    I have started using my Mac for Unix systems administration using X11 and XDMCP (??) to a local linux box running KDE. I start X with -query a.b.c.d and running fullscreen I get a nice fullscreen desktop login. Everything was working fine until I realised that I was still running the Panther version of X11 on my Tiger system. I have upgraded from the install CD and now have a minor but impossible problem.
    Everything works as before and I can login to the box. I open a Konsole session on the KDE desktop and suddenly discover that the "e" key on my keyboard has become a backspace key!!! Every other key seems to work fine!!
    I cannot figure out what is causing this and how to fix it any and all advice/suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

    Remote Control is a built-in feature for SCCM 2012 and uses the RPC protocol. When you use this, the user can still be logged on while helping.
    Remote Desktop is a buit-in feature for Windows and uses the RDP protcol. When you use it, the user will be logged off.
    Why you would use one over the other depends on your requirements.

  • X11 and iTerm

    Is there a way to launch X11 stuff within iTerm? I really like iTerm as a replacement for Terminal so far, but I still have to launch a Terminal from within X11 anytime I use X on a remote machine.
    I found an old solution for a bash profile script, but it doesn't seem to work:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/x11-users/2003/Jun/msg00175.html
    I have DISPLAY set to localhost:0.0, but this didn't work; I tried setting it to .0 but I still get an xauth warning, which keeps X from working (even though I still get a DISPLAY value on remote servers).
    In addition, I also would like to get SSH key forwarding working: I have a script in .bash_profile to start the agent when Terminal/iTerm is launched, but this doesn't seem to forward the agent, so I'm prompted for my passphrase each time I open another iTerm tab or window. I also installed SSHKeychain and add my key there, but that doesn't seem to work either ... maybe I need to tell iTerm to use SSHKeychain somehow?

    Thanks Bill. Here is the part of those instructions that I can't follow:
    +Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase)+
    If I could do that, I would never be prompted for a passphrase, and my problem would disappear!
    Unfortunately, I need a passphrase on my key (well, technically: nobody should never know whether I use a passphrase or not, but if anyone at work ever found out if I didn't, I'd be in serious trouble). So I'm looking for a way to get Terminal/xterm/iTerm/whatever to stop prompting me for the same passphrase each time I open a new window or tab. Here's what I have currently in my .bash_profile (shouldn't this work?):
    # auto-launch SSH Agent:
    SSH_ENV=$HOME/.ssh/environment
    function start_agent {
    echo "Initialising new SSH agent..."
    /usr/bin/ssh-agent | sed 's/^echo/#echo/' > ${SSH_ENV}
    echo succeeded
    chmod 600 ${SSH_ENV}
    . ${SSH_ENV} > /dev/null
    /usr/bin/ssh-add;
    # Source SSH settings, if applicable:
    if [ -f "${SSH_ENV}" ]; then
    . ${SSH_ENV} > /dev/null
    ps -e | grep ${SSHAGENTPID} | grep ssh-agent$ > /dev/null || {
    start_agent;
    else
    start_agent;

  • X11 and security

    Back in the "good 'ol days" (before internet crime became so prevalent) I used to set up X Windows on a host of different systems, run 1 X11 app on one machine and had it display on another, etc. etc. etc. (all that stuff that made X11 great).
    Nowadays I've heard of so many security "loopholes" with X11 that I'm almost afraid to run it. I'm a software developer but NOT a security expert (more like security dimwit). Our current cross platform development environment has some Windows XP systems, FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris, and of course, several OS X systems on it (ranging from Panther to Leopard). We use Cygwin on the Windoze machines FWIW.
    Back in the "good 'ol days" we used to use xhost+ to allow access to all machines, and copy files between systems using rcp. Nowadays, xhost+ is gone and we use scp or rsync for file transfer, and we don't even bother mapping the display of a program running on one system to the X display of another.
    My question is this: Is there a way that I can securely map a display from one system to another? Allow me to provide a scenario:
    1. I compile and test something on OS X, and it works.
    2. I now want to port, compile, and test it on one of the non-OS X systems, but instead of doing an scp or rsync of the code and then moving to the actual machine, I would like to copy the code over with scp or rsync and then map the display from the target machine to the OS X machine, but DO IT SECURELY.
    I know there are ways to do this via ssh, but they seem script/terminal oriented (or possibly I don't understand the process fully). What's the best and easiest way to run X11 AND remain secure?
    Thanks in advance,
    OSX Fan

    Dear Bob,
    sorry if the format of this posting may not be correct (it is more of a personal request for help from help) but I need someone who is rather skilled on security and Windows to look into my note below.
    I have had horrible security experiences with PCs which I needed to use for my job as XP Home Edition and now that I came back to Mac the same criminals who stole personal and financial info from me from two XP platforms, managed to bother me even on Leopard, of course, using a basic Microsoft server connection. FYI I have MAC addresses and IPs which are connected to the same peopole who were reported last year to the authorities.
    I'll discuss the problem with a technician if there actually was a security breach but my computer has been self-'copying' important files, limiting my permissions periodically and I keep finding changes in my preferences. There definitely is an intrusion and it happens through a responder (MDS?), but I don't seem to find a final way to eliminate it. Repairing prefs and fsck did help a bit but did not block the responder. How can someone break in without access to my complicated passwords?
    I am a user, not a programmer, but I consider myself very proficient in troubleshooting anything with system 10.X but this one problem just reminds me of previous DOS XP intrusion by professional thieves.
    Am I supposed to have all these processes even if I am directly connected to a cable modem via router?

    Hi Danny,
    Per my understanding that you can't get the expect result by using the expression "=Count(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4) " to count the the TICKET_STATUS which value is 4, the result will returns the count of all the TICKET_STATUS values(206)
    but not 180, right?
    I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue, the issue caused by you are using the count() function in the incorrect way, please modify the expression as below and have a test:
    =COUNT(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4 ,1,Nothing))
    or
    =SUM(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS=4,1,0))
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

  • BOSD, Battery issues and Heating problem after iOS 8 upgrade

    i have upgraded my iPad mini to iOS 8. Ever since I upgraded to iOS 8 am facing blue screen issues and heating problem as well. This is really frustrating even the patch iOS 8.0.2 dint solve the problem. Are you guys listening our complaints. When will you fixing it.

    The same thing happened to me on my 2012 Subaru Outback.  I'm not sure this will help you since you have a Honda, but I'm posting this just in case.
    I paired the audio on my car with my iPhone 6.  However, when I turned the car off and back on again, the iPhone would not pair automatically.  I had to manually connect the iPhone with the car.  Turns out there are two separate bluetooth pairings on my car: one for phone which allows up to 5 devices and one for audio which allows only one device.  So I did the second bluetooth pairing for the phone (had already done the audio), and that fixed it.  YMMV
