X300 and Crucial C300 SSD

In case anyone is considering doing the same, I thought I would post my experience with this.
The original Samsung 64GB SSD in my X300 was full, I needed something much bigger. The Crucial C300 devices have had good reviews, and are now available in 1.8 inch format.
I bought the 256GB C300, took an image of the old drive, swapped to the new drive and did an image restore which worked perfectly, so that was all I had to do.
I haven't done any detailed tests, but Windows 7 Experience gave 6.1 for the old drive and 7.1 for the new one.
The new drive wasn't cheap but I'm very pleased with it.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I avoided the 128GB version because, quite apart from the fact that I would nearly fill it right away, it has a much slower write speed than the 256GB.
You are right that prices will come down, it's a fast-developing market, but like all such things if you keep waiting for the better deal round the corner you will never move on.

  • Yosemite and crucial m550 ssd

    Hi,
I have recently replaced the 320GB HD in may late 2008 MBP (MacbookPro5,1), with a Crucial 512GB M550 SSD. Used Disk Utility to copy the original disk to the new SSD. Currently running Mavericks.
Have read that should I install Yosemite, my MBP will be trashed basically. because Yosemite does not support 3rd party SSD.
The question is, is it safe for me to install Yosemite or not? Pros/Cons?
    Thanks

Comments are a mixed bag - some colleagues are using SSD with no TRIM and working very well and getting great speed.  Some others are using TRIM Enabler with success with Yosemite.  So, the comments are varied but a number of users have 'third-party' SSDs and no issues.
A comment one made, though addressed to external and RAID setups:
SSD TRIM is a command in the SATA specification that tells the SATA SSD to begin the background process of erasing available SSD pages. This process of erasing available pages in SSDs is sometimes known as “garbage collection.” The lack of TRIM support does not necessarily mean that SAS RAID controllers and external storage arrays do not perform garbage collection on their SSDs, it just means that they have to accomplish it a different way. External storage subsystems that have SSDs in them do perform garbage collection, but this step is triggered by the storage system itself and not by specific SATA TRIM requests issued by the host servers.
Given the mean time between failure rates for current generation SSDs, very similar to HDDs, my view would be to not worry about TRIM/noTRIM at this point.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 & Crucial C300 SSD Drive

    Hi all,
I have in the last month bought a new MacBook Pro from the apple store, 17"
    Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,3
I have tried moving my C300 from my old macbook pro but it jsut doesnt work in the MBP.  I have read about 400 sites which state that this or that is the problem with no definative answers.
Do I need to buy a different model SSD drive or even downgrade to Sata 2?

  • (Solved) Trouble with installing on Crucial C300 Real SSD 64GB

Hello everyone. I've been trying to figure this out for the last three nights. I cannot get arch installed if I am using my ssd. The ssd is Crucial c300 64 GB firmware is 0006. It does not matter what I do if my ssd is connected I get to booting os in bios followed by a reboot with no error messages. I have tried many different things like allowing arch to manually partition the ssd, using ssd as home instead of root to no avail. Only thing I have not tried is adding a 1 mb partition to the beginning of ssd marked as ef02 as per the Arch SSD wiki. If anyone with this same ssd and firmware can chime to let me know if they had the same issue I would appreciate it. I do not have this problem with other distros. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and LMDE have all installed fine on the ssd. Sorry if this is the wrong section for this.
Edit. Looks like I found out the problem. It was having quit boot enabled in the bios. I suppose I need to look into initreadahead if I want arch and my computer to play nice with that setting.

Check whether grub-install belongs to grub package or grub2 package. Try to install these updated grub2 packages from here
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for x86_64
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for i686
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - any arch
and then follow the post_install instructions from grub2-bios package.
You might have to 'bind' mount /dev into your <chroot>/dev though or install the above packages and install grub2 from outside the chroot.

  • Help: Slow Crucial C300 256GB SSD in 17" MacBook Pro (2011) via SATA III 6Gb/s

    Computer: 2011 17" MacBook Pro
    Drive: Crucial C300 256GB
    Drive Firmware: Revision 7
    Bay: Main Drive Bay (6Gb/s)
    OS: Lion 10.7.1
I did a fresh install of 10.7.1 and I'm getting these speeds on the above configuration:
Here is the same test run on my previous computer, a 2008 Mac Pro, with SATA II (same exact drive):
What is going on here?  The Mac Pro with SATA II was running the C300 faster than the brand new 17" MacBook Pro 2011 running SATA III.  This drive should be getting up up to 355MB/s read on SATA III.
Can someone please help me figure out why this drive is not running faster in my computer?
    Thank you in advance.
FYI - I did install the new EFI 2.2 Update that was released in September.  The above tests were after I installed the update!  So you can rule out that I didn't install this update that supposedly fixed SATA speed issues on these Mac's.

I solved it.  Xbench didn't give the best results.  I tried other benchmarking tools and concluded that I am getting the SATA III speeds on this drive on this MacBook Pro.

  • IdeaPad V370 and Crucial MM 128GB SSD Problem!!

I just bought a Crucial MM 128GB SSD to replace my current 500GB HDD in my V370.
I have the following question need yours help!!
    1. In the BIOS, I found it detects the SSD under the SATA HDD but not the SATA SDD!
    2. I have tried to install the windows 7 enterprise edition 64 bit version in the setting of IDE and AHCI mode in the BIOS.  The wireless adapter cannot be started I install the driver that is fully functional in the windows 7 in 500GB HDD.  Actually the wireless adapter can be found in Device Manager.
    3. My V370 is a build-in display card version (intel), after I install the display card driver and reboot to make effective, during the starting of the windows (when the windows logo is running), it will go into Blue screen and it will be restarted and I need to restore to the no display driver installed version of windows.
The SSD is the last updated firmware version 0009 already.  Is the V370 is not support to the Crucial MM SSD?
    Please help!!!!!!
    Samuel

So, I guess you are able to see BIOS and get upto a black screen where it just doesnt find a boot drive?
You could try booting from a USB first, just to make sure that your USB ports are working. You will need to create a bootable USB using Windows copy. I believe you can download windows from Microsoft or any other website.
The thing to note here is that the windows to be downloaded should be the same as what was on your system, I think it should be Home edition.

  • Anyone with a Crucial MX100 SSD and problems with Mavericks?

    Hi there.
I carbon copy cloned my ex Intel X25M G2 160gb SSD to my new Crucial MX100 512gb SSD and installed it in my mac mini Late 2012 (i7 2.6ghz).
Never experienced before, now the system freezing up and getting the "spinning ball of death" for almost 10 seconds (maybe more) and than the system becomes normal. After few time (don't know maybe two minutes, maybe twenty, it depends) again freezing up and getting the "spinning ball of death".
Are there anyone with a Crucial MX100 SSD that experience my problem? Solution? Apple Hardware Test on the mac mini say 'no hardware problem at all' (I went for the long test during the night). Maybe the clone process had some unknown problem even though I did it many times in the past and never experienced something similar.
Do I have to re-install to have the answer? What do you think?
    Regards,
    Claudio.

There's a firmware upgrade for the MX100 (search for MX100 in the dropdown here: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd) however after reading through the thread, the upgrade seems to require a fairly advanced skills and knowledge.  Anyway I'm not sure if the upgrade is intended to fix spinny beachball issues or random and frequent restarts like I'm experiencing.  Here's how Crucial describes the update...
Release Date: 03/10/2015 (Manual boot file for Windows and Mac)
Firmware for the MX100 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU01 to MU02. The MX100 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU02 includes the following changes:
Improved stability, Efficiency, and Performance during power state transitions
Improved handling of environments with unstable power supplies
Improved handling of environments with SATA interface signal integrity issues
Improved response time for SMART read commands
Corrected error handling NCQ Trim Commands
Corrected reporting of SMART Attribute 5

  • 15-f010wm unable to clean install Windows 8.1 on Crucial M500 SSD

    I have a new 15-f010wm laptop I got from walmart's black friday deal.   I have a 240GB crucial M500 ssd I have already installed.
The problem is Windows 8.1 setup will not see the drive.   Windows 7 sees it just fine.
    What I've tried:
    - updated firmware on SSD
    - upgraded laptop BIOS to latest from f.03 to f.12
    - enable "legacy" mode in bios
    - enable / disable xHCI support
    - tried to load AHCI driver from HP's website (This is the storage driver from the driver page for this laptop)
    - format GPT
    - format NTFS
    - Remove all partitions and volumes with diskpart
    - Tried to upgrade windows 7 clean install to Windows 8.1 via DVD.  Upon reboot setup fails to see drive, reboots into Winows 7
I simply cannot get Windows 8.1 setup to see this drive no matter what I try.   Again,  Windows 7 sees it just fine... in fact, I am creating this thread on the laptop in question with Windows 7 installed on the SSD in question.  The hardware is working fine.

  • Could not get Crucial M500 SSD to work in Thinkpad X201

I have a ThinkPad X201 running Window 7, I have not make any changes to the computer hence all the hardware are original.Except when I recently bought a Crucial M500 SSD, First I use MiniTool to clone the HD to the new SSD. After cloning, I install the SSD into the X201. Window appear to boot up normally with no error message. But soon I notice the Window is not working correctly. For example Window no longer recognize Microsoft published program. For a simple thing like pressing Del to delete a file. A UAC warning will come on to asked if I will allow delete, exe from an unknown publisher to make changes to the computer. Then I tried to repair window by downloading the Window 7 ISO file from microsoft site and proceed to do an upgrade of Window, The upgrading process took quite a while. When everything appear to have finished an error message came on to say "Window setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware". So I gave up on cloning and try to make a clean install of Wondow on the SSD by using the Recovery DVD that came with the computer. The installation process gone through but at the end it ask me to put in the supplementary disk which did not come with the computer. Hence I could not complete the process. I am at a total loss, what can I do next to get it to work?

thanks. I used Minitool to make the cloning which can be booted up from a CD/DVD. I will try to clone with the target in the laptop as suggested and let you know the result.
Crucial normally supplies Apricorn EZ Gig software with their drives. If you don't have it, check Crucial's website and there should be a download available. It should work when it detects a Crucial drive connected.
I didn't understand that you said you were going to order an external enclosure. How did you do your clone with Minitool? If you were using an adapter cable, you should also be able to use it to connect the HDD externally.
The cloning software should take care of everything for you. The cloned disk should be a seamless, plug-and-play version of the original. You should not have to fix anything afterwards. Just boot it and start using it directly.

  • SuperDuper kills only Crucial M4 SSDs or all the brands?

Today I have bought a Crucial M4 SSD 2,5 512GB to replace my MacBook Pro HD. I connect it with usb to sata cable to my Mac, format it and begin copying the data using SuperDuper. 5 minuts later I get an error, the drive is ejected and from that moment it has been impossible to mount, erase or repair.
Disk Utility shows the drive with the partition name blurred. If I click mount I get the "run first aid" dialog. First aid says the drive seems OK. If I try to format it another error and DiskWarrior reports a hardware failure. Searching the discussions I find it seems SuperDuper damages the lookup table or something similar. As it was not exactly my idea of quality paying as I paid 1 euro per Gyg, I have returned the SSD and got a refund. The question now is: are all the SSD drives so fragile or partially incompatible or there's one that I can use just exactly like a mechanical hard drive???

Just to clarify the subject: SuperDuper KILLS NOTHING. I bought a second identical Crucial M4 512GB and I got same identical behaviour: ten minutes installing MacOS from DVD then death, unrecoverable, not recognized as a hard drive nor nothing attached to the usb bus...
I needed a PC to revive the drive and to upgrade the firmware. After that it works like a charm, first in an external drive for testing and now inside my 2008 MacBook Pro.
So if you are looking for an ssd drive and googling you end reading this, first of all UPGRADE THE SSD FIRMWARE, and then don't forget to enable TRIM using one of the Trimenabler apps you can get on the internet.
    Hope this helps somebody.

  • Crucial MX100 SSD- Freezing in middle of my work ( MAC OS X 10.10.4)

    Hello
I have Crucial CT256MX100SSD1 (256 GB) installed on my Macbook Pro 2011 OS X 10.10.4 I have used optimal bay for my HDD and I used SSD on primary SATA port. I used a software to clone all my data from HDD to SSD. I didn't have any issues with the Crucial SSD till today. I bought the SSD about 3/4 months ago. I used it perfectly everything worked flawlessly and till today my laptop started freezing or stopping in middle of my work (browsing on internet mainly . or opening up many safari tabs) then I waited couple minutes but still no change so i decided to TURN OFF by holding down power button but after i turned off it still doesnt boot up properly.  My laptop get stuck on the APPLE booting page and it doesnt boot  up but eventually even the apple logo disappears and it freezes again in white screen. It doesn't turn or boot back on. I tried many different methods RESET PRAM , RESET SMC but it just doesn't start back up. But I waited couple more minutes then it managed to turn back on finally. This happened to me almost 2 times now in row today. I am very worried for my data to be lost and not retrieved on the SSD. Please help me to get this solved. I am very unhappy with the current issue i am facing. I've read many people are having this issue. Does anyone have any solution. Please please help  Model: Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1
    Revision:MU01Capacity: 245.07 GB (245,066,539,008 bytes)
    Available: 31.11 GB (31,106,969,600 bytes)

The drive was showing symptoms of Trim being turned off, combine this with the bug riddled MX100 MU01 firmware and that would make it difficult to have a stable Mac. Powering the drive off may have contributed to the problem of the Mac now not booting. Alternatively the MX100 has a hardware problem. Try the following: 1 Boot off your HDD with OS X 10.10.4 and the MX100 SSD connected as a secondary SATA drive. 2 Go to Disk Utility and see if you can Verify/repair the MX100 SSD. 3 Turn Trim on via the Trimforce enable command. 4 Backup your data. If you get this far, you should at least have your data. 5 Upgrade the MX100 to MU02, this is mandatory. 6 Test the MX100  7 Clean install with OS X 10.10.4. No need to rush this, you may consider a larger SSD as 31 GB is not much free disk space. Also OS X 10.11. is due for release which has improvements over OS X 10.10. http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/os-x-10-11/ Also note:  MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issueshttp://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

  • I recently purchased a Crucial MX200 SSD.I need some direction.

Hi, I recently purchased a Crucial MX200 SSD, Current Firmware: MU01.  I set this up with a clean install of windows 7x64, in SATA IDE. My motherboard is an ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 and it supports AHCI. In this computer I have a mobile rack/tray in which I swap (cold swap) this SSD with mechanicalhard-drives depending on the job that I need to do. Everything works together well now. If I do install the AHCI drivers while the SSD is in will I still be able to swap with the mechanical hard-drives ok ? another question; I downloaded motherboard drivers for AHCI. Should I install them orchange the following registry key to 0:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci\StartRestart the computer once (without changing any BIOS settings) and Windows will load default AHCI drivers. Let Windows sit for a minute or two after reboot to give it enough time to make sure this process happened. Restart the computer again and change the SATA operation to AHCI in BIOS. Save the BIOS settings & exit. I should notice that Windows is installing new hardware, which includes several SATA AHCI components.??? Thanks

    No idea about hot swapping.
As for the AHCI drivers, you can make the registry change, and change the bios setting immediately during the next boot.
There's no need to do that extra first reboot or wait for driver installs.  The drivers are already there.  It's just a performance optimisation that it only loads the storage controller driver you used for install.  All you're doing is telling it to load what's already there.  And it's one of the first steps of Windows startup - long before the desktop or any installing new hardware dialogs.

  • Build in a crucial M500 SSD into a Mac Book Pro 2013 - now it crashes

    Hi guys,
first of all greetings from Germany, I hope you can understand my horrible english
Today I bought a Macbook Pro together with a Crucial M500 SSD harddisk.
With the standard HD the Macbook runs perfect.
But when I start it with the new SSD theres a error displayed as attached.
I did Snow Leopard into the superdrive while first start with the SSD.
Could you please tell me what is the reason for that and what can I do?
    Many thanks,
    Jo

If you tried to install Snow Leopard on a new machine, that's your problem, not the SSD. SL isn't going to run on a new machine, at least easily. You'd be better served by copying the old drive to the new one with Carbon Copy Cloner and an external enclosure.

    Thanks.

Hey, i had the same problem and i tried allmost everything: but the problem was not  the ssd, not  the ram, not on changing the date, not on installing only part of the programs (X11, or the Fonts, etc.), to install first 10.5 and then 10.6...
in my case the problem was the driver. I just buy a new samsung external driver and I install with no problems the complete snow leopard.
After allmost 3 weeks with the problem I can say that I'm very happy.

  • Replacing my HDD in my Early 2011 Macbook Pro...Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb and Crucial M500 240 gb. Samsung is faster but less "mac-friendly". Should I opt for the Crucial due to the "mac-friendliness"?

I have a S.M.A.R.T error on my current Hitachi drive that came with me Early 2011 Macbook pro. Want to upgrade to SSD.
Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250gb and Crucial M500 240gb, at this gb range, the Samsung is faster and uses less wattage....ONE PROBLEM...I have read many user experiences that note it is much less mac-friendly...
The software samsung  offers is not IOS compatible and some report lower than expected speeds after installation...Also apparently the RAPID MODE of the drive, the fastest drive mode is nonexistant when installed on a Macbook pro?
Should I opt for the slower and more power cosuming Crucial M500 240gb SSD because it is more Mac-friendly? Does anyone have a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb SSD installed in their macbook pro? What has been your experience?
    Thanks ahead of time!
    Resoure: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-m500-1tb-ssd,3551.html

I decided against the Evo as there are too many Mac users that have had issues with slow speed on them. Even without these, the main speed that Samsung states for the Evo comes form turbo Write which is a PC only feature as is software dependent.
I'm sorry but Crucials M500 is simply too slow compared to modern drives to be recomended. Read speed is ok, but the write is far too slow for the price.
I've used and installed both a Samsung 840 basic and a Samsung 840 Pro in 2 separate Mac books! and currently have the 840 Pro in my own MacBook Pro and it comes very highly recomended. It's all but the fastest Sata III drive you can buy - A few OCZ drives just edge it but the difference is negligible. Samsung by far have the best reliability though when it comes to SSD's. I've been getting 520Mb/s easily on mine consistently, and without getting a MacBook with a PCIe drive you won't get a faster more reliable drive.
I really would recommend nothing else.
