Xcode 4 in a computer lab:  Advice wanted

Hi, All:
I'm configuring Xcode 4 to run under Snow Leopard in a computer lab .  If a student logs in, they are asked for a id and password of somebody in the Developer Tools Group (which I understand is really _developer).
The student accounts are being supplied by Active Directory.  I've asked my Active Directory administrator to see if he can indicate that the students are in that group, so that they can run Xcode 4 apps while remaining as standard users.
I'm surely not the first (or even 10000th) person to encounter this problem: running Xcode 4 in a lab with managed users.  How does everybody else handle this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Michael

Your network admin can use that command against an Active Directory path.

  • Looking for Help on how to get wireless near computer lab

Ok Im Near A Computer Lab, And I want to get free wifi. I can log into the router from one of the computer lab's computers by the >192.168.1.1 and see passphrase, wep keys all that stuff...
My Question is how can I get internet at home from this router?
    More info about router:
    Firmware Version: v2.0.02
    Mod: Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2
    Questions I need answered:
    Basic Things Like, Mainly:
-What Adapter Do I Need? Is My Idea Plausible? What Information Do I need To Log Into This Internet connection from home? What Are The Consequences Of Leeching Internet this way?  just stuff to get me going.
-If I Succeed In Getting Internet From The Computer Lab's router, Will "They" Be Able To See My Personal Email, What I search For on the internet, Downloads Things like this?
Other Maybe Useless Info: I have a old Wireless-G PCI Adapter Model No. WMP54G, I Have Not Tried But I Dont Think The Card Works And Is Broken Do To After Installed The Toolbar Icon Was Completly "Greyed Out"

I'm pretty sure the "computer lab" settings are configured and restricted that is why the default address is not working. Basically, if it is not your network more so if the network is secured,  then definitely, you will not gonna be able to connect unless they had provide you the wireless settings like the SSID and the password. However though, if it is unsecured, then, that's no problem at all.
As with your wireless adapter, check on the links below:

  • PE8 in a 26 Computer Lab of New HPi5-64bit 8Gb-W7-Crashing/Sluggish/Wont Launch

    Greetings,
I hope somebody is familiar with this problem and can offer a solution that I can forward to my school district's tech support, because it's near imposible to teach video editing with PE8 in its current state.
I teach AV Production Tech and Graphic Design at a public school in Texas. We just got a brand new computer lab with 26 new HP Z-something's...not sure of the number but they are i5 processors with 8GB of ram running W7 Pro at 64 bits with nVidia...again..I don't know the numbers (I'm typing from home. . ) but they are very fast video processors with as much ram as you can get, ordered specifically from one of the HP Ad's on Adobe's website . Everything else Adobe runs splendidly and lighting fast - even real time 3D video in Photoshop! But. . . Premeire Elements 8 is close to being completely dysfunctional. On the computers where it doesn't crash (as often), it runs horribly sluggish.  This happens regardless of project specs. Even NTSC DV project files without any video at all - just titles and text - clunks along painfully slow with frustratingly long lags between clicks, drags and other mouse commands. And then, typically on 3 or 4 other random computers in the lab there will be one or both of the following problems: 1) You can't launch the program at all. It acts like it's going to launch, but then gets stuck in the taskbar and you can't get it out, or 2) Everytime you try to enter text, it crashes entirely. I  guess I should ad a 3rd and that would be crashing for no appearant reason at all.
Needless to say, this is extremely frustrating for the students and makes them want to give up, since it is the only editing system we have. I'll be polite and not say here what it does for the teacher.
My tech has reinstalled PE8 with all the latest updates on the many occasions I have put in a trouble ticket, yet the problems still exist.
I can't imagine why PE8 won't run well, or at all, on these machines like all the rest of CS5 Design Premium does. Could it be due to all of the network filtering we have in our district? My district has the strongest lock-down on computer systems I have ever experienced.
This is extremely frustrating because the only thing our techs do is wipe and reinstall.  I can't type up trouble reports all day long each day because I don't have the time, but if I were to do so everytime a machine with PE8 crashed or would not launch, I would be busy all day doing just that.
I hope there's a simple fix to this!
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

As Bill says we get very few reports of success using PRE across a network. It also doesn't help that PRE8 was generally considered a bit of a disaster - even when running standalone.
You don't mention the configuration of your hard disks - they can also aggravate problems if you don't have a lot of free defragmented space (minimum for success is 30GB - I go for 60GB).
Another PRE8 issue was the auto-analyzer that takes over most of the CPU activity.
You say that your Tech Support have installed all 'updates' - ask them to confirm that this includes the latest graphics and sound drivers from the manufacturers web sites (nVidia in your case for graphics). And the latest Quicktime player.
And do work through the article Bill referenced.
I'd also be inclined to query with your IT suppliers why, for new HP machines, they provided an out of date version of PRE. PRE10 has been out since 19th September 2011. And, assuming you procured educational licenses, I'm surprised that's not the version you received.
Maybe, to alleviate the frustration of both tutor and students, you could teach some basic principles with something like Windows Movie Maker.
Also download the PRE10 Trial version and see how that works on your systems.
    Cheers,
    Neale

  • Copying iBooks for iMac computer lab

We want to share free Common Sense Media iBooks to all users in a K-12 computer lab (21 iMacs running Mavericks) without the need to download them for each student from the iBooks Store.  I was able to copy the iBooks folder (xxxxx.ibooks) to a student computer, but was not able to open it through iBooks.   Is it possible to store iBooks on the computer hard drives so the students have access to them?

No, the books are tied to the Apple ID.
They have to download them from iTunes.

  • Install MSN Messenger to Client Computers in the Computer Lab

    Hello,
I have a School Computer Lab with about 50 clients computer running on Mac OS 10.3 and A server that host home directories running on Mac OS Server 10.4.9.
I wanted to update the msn messenger for the users. Could someone please guide me on how to run a network install to all those 50 computers?
    Thanks a lot!

Seriously though, the easiest solution is ARD (http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/), and it's pretty great for a whole ton of other lab management tasks too, which is nice.

  • Computer Lab Desktop issue

I have a computer lab of 28 eMacs with a Xserve. I control the eMacs with ARD. This morning when I booted the lab all the desktops were changed to my personal desktop rather than the student desktops with their folders and work. Nothing different was done yesterady from previous days so I cannot figure out the problem. 2 of the eMacs are not attached to the server and they were not changed. I'm thinking server problem. Anyone have any ideas?

    Kathy Teaches-
First of all make sure you don't overlook the obvious. Including having been hacked. Might be something hardware related though. Is this storm we are having on the East Coast causing power problems?
Do you still have control of the server? If so, try powering the server completely off via the shutdown command. We want power off, nothing running. Shut down all of the eMacs as well.
Power down the switch that all of the networked eMacs are plugged into. Wait a few minutes. Power on the switch and then the server. Power up one eMac other than your own and see what happens. Then power up your main Mac. If this works keep bringing up other Macs and see what happens.
If things don't come back as normal please post your results here.
How robust is your personal password system? How robust is your security in general? Kids are wicked smart ya know, and they will work endlessly to defeat you. Just because.
I am around off and on today. I will keep the gears turning. Please let me know what happens.
    Luck-

  • Is there a solution for Higher Ed Computer Labs?

I am an instructional Technician for the Photography Department at a Community College. We currently purchase and use the Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium here in the Photography, Graphics and Journalism departments. We have over 150 Macintosh computers licensed with your product and we are very interested in the Creative Cloud.
Currently we purchase the licenses for all of our student and faculty computers, we are hoping that you will be developing an education solution for computer labs like ours.
What we would like to see is an arrangement that would allow our students to subscribe to the Creative Cloud for a three-month period that would be paid for prior to the first day of classes. This would avoid classroom disruptions from students failing to pay if the subscription was on a month-to-month basis.
While I understand that the current Student and Teacher edition at $19.95 is a limited promotion, a price of $20–$25 per month or $75 for a three-month period would be less than the cost of a textbook and could be easily charged as a class fee.
A potential problem is that students sometimes do not use the same computer all the time. If students are taking multiple classes in different labs, they need to be able to access the programs on several computers. I am currently subscribed to the free trial month and my impression is that the subscription is dependent on logging in with an Adobe ID. If this is the case, students should be able to use this log in to access the software they need on whatever computer they are at as long as they have an active (paid) login, and are not logged in on another computer.
As it is everywhere in education, our program budgets are tight. The Creative Cloud would allow us to save a significant amount of funds while still offering the most current technology to our students and faculty. The ability to access any software we need and allowing students the ability to access the programs at school and at home will empower both our faculty and students. Additionally, the availability of cloud storage will allow students to work on files at home and at school seamlessly.
    I am making several assumptions:
    Pricing –
Student and faculty pricing will be available.
A price will be established for a three-month period to facilitate a college semester.
    Access –
Students will be able to access the programs on more than one lab computer.
Is access controlled by logging in with an Adobe ID?
Once the software has been installed on a computer, will any student with an Adobe ID be able to access it?
We are hoping to be able to implement this by next fall, so I am anticipating that these details will be worked out before then.

Great to know this I will be sharing it with my professors also.  To have the "team" version would be great!  Many problems occur for students with portable storage units.  The worst is forgetting to download a project and take it with you. which really hurts our timing on a project to completion.  Also as the projects grow in size we can end up with storage issues as some files are very large.  This sounds like a grand solution.
Thank you for answering my question earlier Mr. Rice.  Now I need to get back to my assignments. bye.

I have a used mac computer. I want to sync and update my iphone. Currently itunes tells me that my iphone is connected to a different itunes account and will sync, but delete everything from my phone. How do I make itunes sync and update my phone without deleting all the current information on my phone?

Iphone will sync with one and only one cpomptuer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.  This is the design of the  iphone.
It will erase the content when you sync.
Why not update from the comptuer with which you normally sync?

You should be able to just place them in your Books library in iTunes and check to ensure that your Book library is configured to sync to your iPod when you sync your iPod to iTunes.

    Yes, No problem at all.
Want to give one to wife.do I need to open a new iTunes account for her?
No - you can share the same iTunes account (my wife and I share the same account). But when you sync the iPads, just remember to select the correct content for her iPad and the correct content for your iPad.

  • My iTunes got deleted off a (no longer working) computer. Is there a way I can transfer all content from my iPhone onto iTunes on a new computer? I want to update my phone, but do not want to lose any music off it when syncing it.

My iTunes got deleted off a (no longer working) computer. I have lost all music & data that was on this original itunes. Is there a way I can transfer all content from my iPhone (music & photos) onto iTunes on a new computer? I want to update my iphone (3GS), but do not want to lose any music off it when syncing it. Help please!!

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are using a new computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices in itunes.
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book & iCal or Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, DO NOT SYNC at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

I have a new computer and I want to make it my home device for I tunes. I have home sharing, and all of the music and files are on the new computer. Now what do I do to make the new computer the home computer for Itunes?

The computer (windows platform) where I initially began using Itunes has four other computers/devices that are shared with it. All four of the other computers show up in my account, and can be managed. Or I can remove them. But on the new computer that I want to be my base computer (home if you will). The computer I want it to replace, when ITunes is open, has a tool bar, with various functions. All of the other devices are linked to that computer in ITunes, under Home SHaring. The new computer, shows the downloads via Home Sharing, but it does not show/have any tool bar.
I want to activate the new computer to be the computer via ITunes where all of the devices are linked to it as the base for ITunes. And, I don't know how to make that happen.
    I hope that makes sense.

  • Need Suggestions for Student Computer Lab - Multiple Users on IWeb

I need some suggestions on how to best show students in the computer lab to save their Domain file to their thumbdrive. It seems some students are saving previous users Domain Files to their thumbdrives. There has to be an easy solution. Students are using IWEB for their Digital Portfolio projects and they are do to be presented in June. For some reason students are not saving their work before the end of class.
This is how I instruct them to save their work:
    File Save
Open Finder, Click on Student User, Library, Application Support, Iweb, then drag Domain file to their thumb drive.
This way when a new student comes to use the same computer either a new domain needs to be created or they open the domain file in their thumb drive.
    Suggestions Please!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thank you!!!!

Thank you for the suggested forum. It seems so simple but students just don't get it. As a Lab Tech and not the Administrator, I can not install any programs.

  • I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule.  I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I used an external hard drive to back up my computer using Time Capsule before I bought a new one.  I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book.  When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time.  Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?
