Xcode project from makefile rules.

Dear All,
I have crashed into an old project but new to me and it was not setup for Xcode. I have successfully compiled it in the command line mode using Intel c++/fortran compilers and using Xcode to debug it.
The thing is that Xcode complained about some preprocessor definitions not being defined; however, it is defined when I assign the flag during the compile time. Since it is already compiled, there is no way to give additional preprocessor definitions to the code.
I am wondering if Xcode has anyway to derive the rule for code linking according to the binary it reads in. Apparently it can debug and walk through the code now, why can it not derive the building rules? I am just thinking a quicker way to replace the command line makefiles by a single Xcode project.
Anyone?
Thanks in advance.
Alvyn

Can't you just recompile with with the additional flags?
Something that is already built with makefiles should probably be kept that way.

  • Xcode Project to Makefile

    Does Apple's Developer Tool package include a tool for converting an Xcode project to a Makefile, for building from a shell prompt or script?

    Thanks, that's the command I forgot - though it would be nice to see the dependencies listed in familiar Makefile format.

  • How do you add files to a target of an Xcode project from the terminal?

    Hi friends.
    I am building a tool to build projects in an automated way. So far it is working great but I can't find a command to add files to a target from the command line.
    Basically what I want to do is the following:
    I have a directory with the XCode project, something like:
    - Classes
    - Images
    - Configuration
    - Etc
    I want to add some files to the folder Images that will be included in the build output.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks!!

  • Problem Moving XCode Project From iMac to MacBook

    I have been working with an Objective C library for iPhone apps using XCode on a iMac running OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). My project builds fine on this system. I need to relocate the project to a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.4 (12E55). I have XCode 4.6.3 installed on both systems. The project fails to build on the Mac Book pro. I get two compile errors, both claiming "No visible @interface for 'xxx' declares the selector 'yyy'". (xxx and yyy are class and method names respectively.) The source code appears correct, and as I mentioned this very same project builds fine on the iMac.
    I can zip the project directory structure on the MacBook and copy it back to the iMac, and it again compiles just fine.
    The project will also build on another iMac using XCode 4.6.1
    I've tried stuff like deleting the schemes and re-creating them, etc.
    I'm rather new to the Apple development world. The code was developed by someone else, and unfortunately I can't really call him in on this. So if anyone has run into anything like this, I'd appreciate knowing what the causes/remedies might be. Thanks..

    Sorry. There is no remedy other than doing it correctly the first time. What you will have to do is rebuild the project from scratch.
    Do all of the following on the original machine. Create a new project using the correct template for whatever you are building. Use git SCM. Setup all of the plist and bundle IDs to be the same as the original. Then, open up the original project. Drag all of the source files except for main.m from the old project to the project navigator of the new one. When promped, make sure you copy the files to the destination. Once you have all of the files copied over, get the project running again. I'm sure you will have difficulty because there are probably other things that were done incorrectly.
    Once you have the new app working, you can transfer it to the new machine. You might want to look at setting up a remote repository. You will also want to do additional testing. Once you familiarize yourself with the code, you might want to split it back up again into an organization that makes sense for you.

    I have a MacBook Pro (Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b). Please let me know about upgrading iOS version so that I will be able to do the class project.

    To program for iOS 6, you need iOS 6 SDK. You need to download Xcode 4.5.x. But don't worry. All your previous projects are still alive and you are able to open them in the new Xcode.

  • Xcode fails while makefiles work

    I am having problems setting up an xcode project for some given source code.
    I have already a build system based on makefiles for the source code that works fine (so the source code must be ok).
    Now i am trying to set up a xcode project for that source code. It is distributed over a small number of directories, consists (for now) of one library plus some test programs.
    Building the library seems to work fine, but when i build the test programs, i get linker errors.
    Here are the steps of the build process of xcode for one of the test programs (it is called 'unix') plus the ensuing linker error messages:
    CompileC /tmp/xcode/qhull.build/Release/unix.build/Objects-normal/ppc/unix.o /Users/zach/Code/CollDet/xcode/../common/qhull/test/unix.c normal ppc c com.apple.compilers.gcc.4_0

    I suspect that the problem is caused by the build process that builds the library, that something xcode is doing is wrong.
    Here are the last few steps of the build process for the library from xcode (the name of the lib is 'qhull'):

    Are there any differences that might cause xcode to produce the linker errors?
    There are several command line options that are different from the compile/link commands issued by the makefiles.
    I have no idea what they do, where they come, or if they really might be the cause.
    For the record: i am building on a Powerbook, and not building a Universal binary.
    I will appreciate any suggestions, tips, pointers, etc.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

    Why do you need to build in Xcode? If you already have makefiles that work, just use them so you don't have two development environments to maintain. I only ask that question because people seem to think Xcode is somehow required for building on MacOS X. It isn't, not for any project.
    Let's say, for whatever reason, you want to build it in Xcode. Another question. Why don't use use a makefile project? You can have all your code organized in Xcode how you want, and your build step is just to call "make" on the existing makefiles. You'll have some of the benefits of Xcode without having to maintain two development environments.
    Again. Let's say, for whatever reason, you want to build it in Xcode using a native project. Now come much harder questions. How did you setup your Xcode project? Ideally, you should have an aggregate target with one subproject for the library and a subproject for the unit test application. Does the makefile version also build dynamic libraries? If not, your Xcode project should be a static library. Once you get it running, you can (if you want) convert it to a dynamic library.
    If none of these questions really answers your question, you are going to have to delve into the differences in how Xcode builds vs. the makefiles. Dynamic libraries can be particularly difficult to figure out. There isn't any magic setting or Xcode bug. You just have to understand how the build and link process works. Personally, I wouldn't waste any time building Xcode projects for things I didn't write. You'll have to re-do everything the next time you upgrade the software or your system.

  • How do I use a precompiled dylib in my xcode project?

    Hello all you brainiacs out there!
    I want to use mongoDB as my database for my iPhone projects.
    I have compiled their code, with instructions from http://api.mongodb.org/c/current/building.html... successfully.
    I ran all the tests, successfully.
    I have two files, libmongoc.dylib and libbson.dylib generated.
    I have imported them into a brand-new xcode project, (build phases, link binary with libraries, hit '+' sign, add other and browse to these two files)
    I copied the .h files (bson.h and mongo.h) to my project.
    Can I now use the functions in my project as defined to connect, insert, delete.... etc.
    I am a noob at iPhone development (2 months) but I do know what I am doing... (I passed the 2  IOS 5 tests at brainbench.com scoring just under 4/5)
    Can someone walk thru the steps after loading in the dylibs and including the C headers?
    Regards,
    Dan

    The App Store Review guidelines have such a list.
    But rather than focusing on what you can't do, you should focus instead on what you MUST do. One of those "must do" items is comply with any licensing agreements for code or resources you include with your app. It can be quite enlightening to ignore what people say about "open source" and "free software" and actually read those licenses say and research their history. It isn't Apple that is restricting you here . As a wise person once told me - "Follow the money". That will lead you from the Free Software Foundation to academic think tanks and writers right back to .. .some interesting places.

  • Publication of the big-sized Enterprise projects from Project Professional 2013 to Project Server 2013 takes about 60+ minutes.

    Dear Sirs,
    I need your support over the following MS EPM 2013 issue:
    Publication of the big-sized Enterprise projects from Project Professional 2013 to Project Server 2013 takes about 30+ minutes. We
    need to reduce this total publication time down to acceptable working values 10+- minutes.
    Environment information:
    Single App Server (Virtual): 16 Gb RAM, x64 4xCPU, HDD > 50 GB free disk space, OS Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition x64 Service
    Pack 1, MS SharePoint Server 2013 and MS Project Server 2013 with CU December 2013 (KB 2850024) applied.
    Single RDBMS MS SQL Server (Virtual): 8 Gb RAM, x64 4xCPU, HDD > 200 GB free space, OS Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition x64 Service
    Pack 1, MS SQL Server 2012 x64 SP 1 Enterprise Edition.
    We have 1Gbit LAN between APP, DB server and 1Gbit LAN between APP and Proj Prof Client.
    Yes, we are on the way of migrating to the Prod environment
    with 3-tiered architecture (with SP1 slipstream and CU December 2014 applied), but this issue also
    presents there.
    Project’s file information:
    Tasks in the file: [~4900], resources in the file [~396] enterprise task’s custom fields used in the file [~23].
    Project save procedure for this new project would last about 7 minutes. Project publication would last about 47 minutes. We noticed that
    tasks synchronization process took about 1 second for each ~2,5 tasks, to add them to the sharepoint tasks list. So for all 5148 tasks it took about 5148/3/60 =  34 minutes. Other 13 min was used for reporting database publication and other tasks relevant
    for new sharepoint site creation.
    Case 1: Issue description:
    During the Enterprise project’s file save and publication we have the following sharepoint 2013 log messages:
    07.31.2014 12:43:17.22 Microsoft.Office.Project.Server (0x0358) 0x3D5C SharePoint Foundation Monitoring b4ly High Leaving Monitored Scope
    (Persisting list changes). performing time =376.068676326181 22dca99c-4696-70f1-e9e2-06851d0bcffd
    07.31.2014 12:43:17.69 Microsoft.Office.Project.Server (0x0358) 0x3D5C SharePoint Foundation Monitoring b4ly High Leaving Monitored Scope
    (Persisting list changes). performing time =361.652807828928 22dca99c-4696-70f1-e9e2-06851d0bcffd
    It shows that sharepoint spend at least ~350 milliseconds (or 0,35 sec*4900 tasks = 1715 sec, or 28,5 min) for each task update during
    project publication. And we also have another log file that shows that about 0,7 sec (or 0,7 sec*4900 tasks = 3430 sec, or 57 min) sharepoint spend for save each task in project file to project server. So total save and publication time more then 60+ minutes
    for that project file. The same result we have even if user didn’t do any changes at the project file.
    We use only enterprise projects (dbo.MSP_EpmProject_UserView.projectvisibilitymode = «False»), and do not use sharepoint tasks lists,
    but the synchronization between MSP Plan and SharePoint tasks list works at any case.
    Case 2: Issue description:
    - For the second test we created a new project with new sharepoint project’s site on basis of our «issue» project, with total amount
    of tasks in it of 5148 (yes, we increased the tasks list default limit at the sharepoint site up to 6000 items in it – standard limits for sharepoint view list – 5000 items).
    - Project save procedure for this new project would last about 7 minutes. Project publication would last about 47 minutes. We noticed
    that tasks synchronization process took about 1 second for each ~2,5 tasks, to add them to the sharepoint tasks list. So for all 5148 tasks it took about 5148/3/60 =  34 minutes. Other 13 min was used for reporting database publication and other tasks
    relevant for new sharepoint site creation.
    -Then we deleted the
    tasks list for that new test project from the sharepoint site and republish the project plan one more time. This time project save procedure took about 7 minutes, project publication about 2 minutes and 3 minutes for other relevant queue jobs. So total time
    is 12 minutes.
    As a conclusion: yes, we have determined
    the exact problem - during synchronization process (from Project Server to SharePoint) it perform copying all tasks and related data from Project to SharePoint in spite of fact that you changed only ONE task or ALL of them. At any case, synchronization will
    copy ALL of them from Project Server to SharePOint task’s list.
    Our workaround is to disable the task’s synchronization for such big-sized project plans:
    – to delete the SharePoint «tasks» list at the SharePoint site tied with project plan.
    - or deattach the SharePoint site from the project plan.
    Thank you for reading this topic, please if you also forced with such issue provide us any known workaround or maybe any official response
    \ feedback from MS about it.
    Thank you in advance,
    Best Regards, Andrey

    Regarding my topic, I also said that every time when sync works it updates All items from project’s plan at Project Server to corresponded task’s list at SharePOint server. Inspire of the fact that you changed only One task or group /
    all of them at your project’s plan.
    And it seems to me and my colleagues that it’s probably (maybe) a “bug” at the product. Here is what we have if looked a little bit closer to the code:
    Share Point determines what task to sync from Project’s plan to sharepoint list. To do that sharepoint needs to know was that task changed or not, based on the following fileds (check SQL stored procedure “[MSP_READ_TASKS_FOR_SYNCRONIZATION]”):
    TASK_UID    TASK_NAME    TASK_START_DATE    TASK_FINISH_DATE    TASK_PCT_COMP    TASK_PARENT_UID    TASK_OUTLINE_NUM
    WSS_LISTITEM_UID   TASK_ID    TASK_IS_ACTIVE
    We noticed that at any case synchronization performs for all tasks, EXCEPT the ROOT one. Then we looked at the comparison of TASK_PARENT_UID field. So sharepoint compares TASK_PARENT_UID with ParentID (this is internal name for lookup
    field “Tasks” at the Sharepoint, and it stores their values at the format "ID;#Title").
    And comparison performs like following:
    SharePoint looks for Task at the Tasks’s list corresponded to Project’s plan with ID represented at the TASK_PARENT_UID field. Then it takes SharePoint ListItem ID (“int” type) and store it to the “num” parameter;
    num = this.GetCachedListItemByUniqueId(listItem.ParentList, nullable.Value).ID;
       2.Then it compares “num” with task’s “ParentID” at SharePOint as follow with operator “!=”:
    ((SPItem) listItem)["ParentID"] != (System.ValueType) num
       3. If comparison was success (true) – then it tell us that values (at the Project’s plan for tasks) was changed, then it need to be synchronized. Corresponded Method setup “true” flag, and then returns it.
    The “bug” is that this expression at the Step 2 will always return “true”, because in fact it compares “string” (see above – that this is lookup field at SharePoint side)
    with “number”. For example if the parant task ID is “55”, then we get:
    "55;#Task 1" != 55
    And by the rules of .Net the “string” will never equal “number”
    Furthermore this is approved by the SharePoint logs:
    In that case we always get the note “Setting ParentID to” at the logs (we see it if turns on Verbose for “Project Server” -> “Sharepoint Integration” category).
    So at any case of publishing project’s plan we always get that note at the logs for tasks that have Parent task, and we have Parent for all of them EXCEPT the ROOT one, exact logs represented further:

  • Can a Stored Procedure be called from a Rule (not using Scripted JDBC Adap)

    Hello smart people,
    Question: Can a stored procedure be called from a Rule without using the Scripted JDBC Resource Adapter?
    What's Desired: The project has very strong sql developers and average at best Java developers. We have been successful at implementing the scripted JDBC Resource Adapter which makes use of Java Bean shells. The custom Java Bean shell contains code that calls a stored procedure. We are cool with that process.
    However we would like to be able to set up a Rule that calls a Stored Procedure without jumping thru the Java Bean Shell layer. The Stored Procedures we will be developing will not access the tables in the Waveset database. Instead the Stored Procedures will be accessing custom tables in a custom database. The custom DBase will be housed on the same dBase server as the Waveset database.
    Environment: Identity Manager 7.1. Oracle 10i, and Unix OS.
    It seems to me that this task is possible, but the posts in this forum make it sound like perhaps it is not.
    Do any of you smart people agree that it should be possible or better yet has anyone implemented such an approach?
    Thanks.

    We did this by putting all of the JDBC calls into a Java class, then instantiated that class and called the methods from within a rule. An example of a rule we used is this:
    <Rule authType='UserMembersRule' name='List UserType'>
      <block>
        <defvar name='adapter'>
          <new class='com.waveset.adapter.ScriptedJdbcResourceAdapter'/>
        </defvar>
        <invoke name='setResource'>
          <ref>adapter</ref>
          <invoke name='getObject' class='com.waveset.ui.FormUtil'>
            <ref>context</ref>
            <s>Resource</s>
            <s>Banner</s>
          </invoke>
        </invoke>
        <defvar name='jdbcHelper'>
          <new class='edu.bates.JDBCHelper'>
            <invoke name='getConnection'>
              <ref>adapter</ref>
            </invoke>
          </new>
        </defvar>
        <defvar name='userList'>
          <new class='java.util.ArrayList'/>
        </defvar>
        <invoke name='addQueryToList'>
          <ref>jdbcHelper</ref>
          <s>SQL QUERY HERE</s>
          <ref>userList</ref>
        </invoke>
        <ref>userList</ref>
      </block>
      <MemberObjectGroups>
        <ObjectRef type='ObjectGroup' id='#ID#Top' name='Top'/>
      </MemberObjectGroups>
    </Rule>

  • Create a Project From an Application

    I currently have a LabVIEW Realtime application (executable) running on a test system which interacts with a Compact-RIO  chassis (FPGA).  Unfortunately the project that was used to create all of this is now missing and the original designer is no longer with the company.  Is there any way for me to "reverse build" a project from this application?
    Basically i want to do the following:
    1) make sure that the application is backed up correctly in case it ever needs to be restored in the future.  If the computer or compact-RIO chassis ever dies, I will want to restore things to how they are now.
    2)I also want to potentially change some things in the current application.  Is there a way for me to do this without having the original project?
    Hoping for some quick/easy responses on this ::fingers crossed::
    Thanks!

    1) Any configuration files, support directories, etc. that the appliation needs.
    2) I would backup the bit file.
    3) Only if they named the project and executables the same.
    I would recommend looking at the Replication and Deployment utility for making an image of your cRIO and backing it up.
    There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions

  • I have Iphoto library in Aperture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging?

    I have Iphoto library in Apeture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the apeture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.  I would like to do this just to reorganize the photos between the two.  I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.

    Tell us more, please. I am not quite sure, what you want to do and how you are using Aperture and iPhoto?
    Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto are you using?
    Do you have separate photo libraries for Aperture and iPhoto, or are you opening your iPhoto libraries in Aperture?
    I have Iphoto library in Apeture.
    Did you import an iPhoto library into Aperture?  And now you are seeing a section "iPhoto Library"  in the Aperture projects list in the Inspector?
    Events and albums you imported from iPhoto (Import > Library > Some iPhoto Library) will be imported as Aperture projects and albums, and they will behave exactly as other Aperture projects and albums.
    Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the aperture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.
    You can drag images from any project in Aperture to other projects and that will move (not duplicate) the images and all its versions to that project. And when you drag all images from the project to another project, the remaining project will be empty and can be deleted.  (Caution: Photos that you have hidden in iPhoto will not be visible in Aperture. If you are not sure, if you have hidden photos, open the library again in iPhoto and unhide all photos).
      I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.
    There should be no problem with moving all photos from the same years to the same projects. You can also drag projects in "Projects" view on top of each other. That will merge them.
    You could also define smart albums in Aperture to search for images taken at a specific period of time:
    File > New > Smart album:
    Then, in the Smart Settings HUD, click "Add Rule" and add a Date or Calendar rule.
    For example, to find all images taken in 2010, use a rule "Date > Capture Year is > 2010"
    To search for Photos taken at a specific date or at several dates, use a "calendar" rule. This way, you do nat have to type the date, but can pick it from a mini calendar.

  • Xcode project questions

    I have just created a new project in xcode.
    Now,I would like to get rid of the files proj_Prefix.pch and projPriv.h , because i don't need them. However, it seems i can't just delete them, because otherwise xcode complains about not finding them.
    In addition, can i get rid of the files projProj.xcconfig and projlTarget.xcconfig ?
    Oh, and one more question: which files of xcode should i put into the SVN repository?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Gabriel.

    You have to remove the proj_Prefix.pch and projPriv.h files from the project to delete them safely. In the project window, select the files you want to delete and press the Delete key. An alert opens asking you if you want to delete the references to the files or delete the files and references. Deleting the reference removes the file from the project but keeps it on your hard disk. Deleting the file and reference removes the file from the project and your hard disk. Deleting the reference, then moving the file to the Trash is safer than deleting the file and reference because you can recover the file if you find out you need it.
    You can get rid of the xcconfig files. Those are Xcode configuration files that contain build settings. Configuration files are useful if you make a lot of changes to Xcode's default build settings. By putting the changed settings in a configuration file, you don't have to change the settings in Xcode for every project.
    The point of a SVN repository is to track the changes you make to files. Put the files you need to track in the repository. At a minimum, you should put your source code files in the repository. What works for me is to put everything but the project's build folder in the repository. When I create a Xcode project I want to place under version control, I temporarily move the project's build folder. After importing the project into the repository and checking out the project's files, I move the build folder back with the project.

  • Xcode Project Creation deleted Desktop

    I probably know the answer and do not want to hear what about the backup... etc etc
    I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite and have Xcode installed. I wanted to do a quick check in Xcode and was not paying attention and went with the defaults it had, well...
    Basically the Xcode project was named Desktop saving in my home directory and therefore replaced my Desktop... I don't really do anything on the machine I wouldn't mind losing as I copy off to other drives and servers etc but would quite like to know why there was perhaps no alert and what it has actually done to my desktop and would quite like to know what was on the desktop.
    I am thinking Data Recovery is the only option but have tried Data Rescue and it recovers files as numerically numbered so will take a while to filter through all the results.
    Any suggestions anyone?

    When I try that here I get
    So no idea why you did not get that alert, perhaps you did and missed it?
    Apart from Data Recovery (or the backup) there isn;t much else you can do at this point.

  • What can i do when my Xcode project shows me That UIKit/UIKit.h file not found.

    When i going to run my Xcode project on my iPad i got an issue,it was UIKit/UIKit.h file not found. what can i do?

    Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
    Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
    If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
    Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
    (If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • [Xcode] Error from Debugger: Program not being run

    All of a sudden my Cocoa-AppleScript projects are not being run with *Build and Run* in Xcode 3.2.2. Well, most of them anyway - some old, and some downloaded projects are OK, but projects that ran OK yesterday give me an error today:Running…
    No executable file specified.
    Use the "file" or "exec-file" command.
    No executable file specified.
    Use the "file" or "exec-file" command.
    The program being debugged is not being run.
    The program being debugged is not being run.
    No project settings were changed (I don't even use the debugger, just the console), and the only thing that I've done in the mean time is a software update. The only thing new from that was a Java update, which I don't think should have had anything to do with it. I was having the same problem even building new blank projects, but I've since updated to 3.2.4 and reset the Xcode preferences, which at least got the blank projects going again.
    I've compared some of the settings between projects that work and projects that don't, but I have no idea what to look for. The built applications will run when double-clicked by themselves, just not in Xcode.
    Update: zipping the project files and then unzipping them seems to fix the issue, but I would like to know what to look for that could have caused this problem.

    AHA! Well, although I could have sworn I ran some of these projects from their current location, the problem wound up being related to characters in the name of one of the containing folders.
    I sometimes use leading spaces in the folder names to get them to sort to the top of the list, but even doing that you sometimes need to use additional characters to get the items to sort in the desired way. One of the characters I used (a tilde) seems to get expanded by one of the underlying utilities - my archived projects were in this folder, while other downloaded examples (and copies I had made to other locations) worked since they were outside of the problem folder. It was weird that pretty much everything else ran correctly, though.
    Lesson learned - do NOT use characters that may be special to a shell script in any of your project file paths.
