XFCE - Shutdown and Reboot buttons greyed-out (SOLVED)

This issue cropped up for me a couple of weeks ago.  Just sat down to try and find a solution.  Followed several suggestions from several posts to no avail.
Finally discovered that the syntax for achieving this in "/etc/sudoers" has evidently changed.
This is what I got from the XFCE site: http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=21331 and is very similar to what's in the Arch Wiki, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … o_Shutdown. So I had been using the following line in /etc/sudoers and it had been working:
%users mylaptopname=NOPASSWD: /usr/lib/xfce4/xfsm-shutdown-helper
At some point in an XFCE upgrade the path to "xfsm-shutdown-helper" changed to "/usr/lib/xfce4/session/xfsm-shutdown-helper"
I changed the path to "xfsm-shutdown-helper" but that didn't solve the problem.
Finally I tried this in /etc/sudoers:
%users  ALL=(ALL)       NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown -h now,/sbin/reboot
And all the usual options in the shutdown menu re-appeared.
Hope this helps someone.

Replying to my own post because of what I've discovered since I first posted this.
Most importantly, the fix which I thought had fixed this problem didn't really work.  I was snookered into thinking it had.  But I've found another solution which appears to be working now, thus this post.
Here's what I've found.
I had no login/display manager on my laptop.  I was auto-logging into my desktop with this setting in /etc/inittab:
x:5:once:/bin/su myusername -l -c '/usr/bin/startx >/dev/null 2>&1'
The snooker alluded to above was this:  If I booted to a command line and issued "startx" to start XFCE, I would have the shutdown and reboot buttons available on the logout dialog.
But if I booted directly into the desktop, I didn't.  It's taken me a while to figure out that this is what was going on.
Even though my old setup had worked for the almost 2 years I've been using Arch and XFCE, some upgrade somewhere in  recent months prevented it from working any longer.
My final fix was to install a login manager, in my case, lxdm.  And set it to auto log me into my desktop.
I now have the expected reboot and logout menus.
Hope this helps someone.  This has been a bear to figure out.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE shutdown and reboot buttons only dump out to prompt

Recently, after an update, the XFCE shutdown and reboot buttons began not working as expected.  Both are present, and I can click them.   They seem to try to do what they should, XFCE does terminate, but I am dumped out to a shell prompt rather than the shutdown or reboot happening.   What might be a possible cause of this behaviour that I can check and correct?
    Thanks,
    Bill

Are you running systemd or still a sysv/initscript setup?
If it is the latter take into account that consolekit has been dropped. Therefore, as far as I understand it, you are not 'authenticated' and thus not allowed to either shutdown or reboot.
Consider switching to systemd and a good start would be to comply with the 1st step of the systemd installation featured in the wiki to regain control of shutdown/reboot. Afterwards start investigating for the rest as initscripts support has ended.

  • Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out

Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out.  I have downloaded and installed Itunes 11 (multiple times) and restored my phone twice already, but I am still not able to sync my Iphone 4 with Itunes.
When I select / de-select Apps on Itunes to remove from the phone the "Apply" button does appear, but after I click it nothing happens.  Then the greyed out "sync" button just appears again.
    Anyone with some advise please?

Try Restarting or Resetting your touch.
Restart: Hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears and turn off your iPod. Press the sleep/wake button and hold it until you see the Apple icon.
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The red slider will appear first, keep hold everything until you see the Apple icon. Release the buttons.
Check your iPod and see if your music and apps have reappeared. If they do after either option, then resync your iPod.
If neither works, then Restore your touch through iTunes.

lockheed  you could always shutdown like this from wiki, thats what i do.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … o_Shutdown
I have all suggestions from from this thread. And i not use any display manager.
That was more of a surprice that i got shutdown, restart, hibernate, sleep with startx instead of startxfce4. I dont know if more xfce users can do this.
And for me i dont need to have shutdown, restart, hibernate, sleep in the panel.More curious why startx works and startxfce4 not like i say in my first post.

  • Firefox 8 and 9beta. Back and Forward buttons greyed out. Right click menu also has forward and back greyed out. Updated all plugins, then disabled all plugins and extensions and started in safe mode. No change.

My forward and back buttons are greyed out after update to Firefox 8. Tried to move to 9 beta, but same behavior. Back and Forward also greyed out in right click menu.
Attempted to fix by updating all plugins and extensions, then disabled all plugins and extensions, and then tried to start in safe mode. Nothing worked.

You could have backed up your profile folder. If you did, [[Recovering important data from an old profile]] can help :)

  • Forward and back buttons greyed out, no forward or back available in right click menu either

After upgrading to the latest FF14 the forward and back buttons and menu versions of forward and back are greyed out.
Tried the sqllite check and it says all my databases are fine. Tried safe mode, same thing. Tried a new profile, same thing.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Apply and OK buttons greyed out in console after updating custom lists

    Service Manager 2010 SP1
I updated some custom lists that are used in our incidents and now the OK and Apply buttons are greyed out in the console. It's been years since I built this out and I'm hazy on how it all works. I tried putting everything back the way it was but the buttons
are still greyed out. Any new incidents created AFTER I made the changes to the lists are working OK.
    Any ideas what happened here?
    Any help appreciated, thanks,
    Dan

yes, that's usually the reason but as far as I can tell, all of the required fields are filled out and I've even changed each of the fields to see if that would help but it doesn't.
This only seems to be happening with 20-30 tickets that were created before I changed my lists. Newly created tickets are OK.

  • Ipod touch stuck on virtual shutter and camera button greyed out

When I go to the camera, the virtual shutter appears closed and the camera button is greyd out.  I've shutdown and resynched and nothing is working.  Please help.

    Try to Reset your device:
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears (ignore the Slide to Power Off option that shows up first).
If that doesn't help, you'll need to Restore your device. It's in the user guide.

  • My "Check for updates" and "Restore" buttons greyed out in iTunes.

Hy this is a screenshot of my problem. Please help me out. Thank you.

On my G4 iBook I was having issues, first with a first gen shuffle, greyed out update and restore, no info on serial number and such. Shuffle was blinking orange and red, took to Genuis bar tried the shuffle reset application, hosed. My 3rd Gen iPod and brand new Video iPod (just got today) also greyed out.
Shuffle reset was giving numerous error messages, trashed and reinstalled iTunes and all plists, no good.
Tried shuffle on old eMac running older iTunes, worked fine!!
Tried brand new Video iPod on old eMac and older iTunes, worked fine.
Archived and installed Tiger on iBook and voila, Video pod is good to go, haven't tried old shuffle on this yet but, bottom line, reinstall OS did the trick (or so it would appear for now).

  • HT201317 photo stream and options buttons greyed out, windows 7

This has not happened before. I have a Windows 7, 64 bit laptop, and the photo stream button and it's associated options button cannot be selected.
I have uninstalled & re-installed iCloud about 3 times now, ran Malwarebytes, emptied out all photo streams on iPad & iPhone. What should I try next?

The way it worked for me was I went to control panel and uninstalled icloud and itunes, restarted pc and went to the apple site and downloaded icloud and itunes.

  • [SOLVED]Disable Shutdown and Reboot from XFCE

    Hi all
I would like to disable the shutdown and reboot buttons from XFCE (4.10) or to do disable shutdown/reboot systemwide.
I searched for specific xfce instructions and all i could find was using xfconf-query[1] and afaik it can only disable hibernate and suspend buttons

    @nadman10
it had no change to remove my users from the power group
    @2ManyDogs
Creating that file (/etc/xdg/xfce4/kiosk/kioskrc) and setting which users could shutdown solved the problem
    Thanks for your time

  • Systemd - kdm - xfce session: shutdown and reboot disappears randomly

I use systemd and kdm as login manager; my desktop is XFCE.
Immediately after login, if I click the logout button applet in the xfce panel, I can access all the options (shutdown, reboot, etc).
But sometimes, after a while during the session, the shutdown and reboot option simply disappear - only logout works. If I log out to KDM and then again log in, they reappear.
Does anyone have a clue about this?

Just FYI the wikis were updated:
Note: slim is ConsoleKit capable since version 1.3.3. Unless you happen to run an old version, you must no longer include ck-launch-session in your .xinitrc or slim.conf login_cmd.

  • I am having a lot of issues but the big one is that my menu, buttons and toolbar keep greying out

I am having multiple issues and they all seem related to the menu/settings:
    • Every time I start Firefox, my bookmarks toolbar is invisible. The box to display Bookmarks Toolbar IS checked but I have to disable and then re-enable it on the toolbar menu in order to get them to display again.
    • "Tabs on Top" keeps defaulting to off. I check the box every time I run the browser, but every time I close it, it's back off again when I restart.
    • I keep getting tabs that cease to be interactive. They are stuck open and I cannot close, move, or pin them. In fact, if I try to click on the tab, it selects the tab immediately to the right of it. It's like Firefox does not realise these tabs exist.
All of these are frustrating but I could handle them if this also wasn't happening:
    • Periodically, all my menus and buttons grey out and I am unable to use any of them. I can't click bookmarks, I can't use my back/forward buttons, I can't access anything on the menus. I can still use the URL bar and interact with the websites themselves. It seems particularly prone to doing this while I am adjusting settings or toolbars which unfortunately I have to do a lot because of the aforementioned issues. I have not yet been able to use the browser for longer than 15 minutes before it happens. I am having to restart it constantly.
    Potentially Helpful Information:
I have reinstalled Firefox (once as an upgrade, once I uninstalled the original one first) several times at home in hopes this would help, but it has not.
I am using Windows 7. (at work I am still running 2k and Firefox 4 works great)
The only addons I am using are Morning Coffee, Personas, Adblock and Noscript. I use them also at work with Firefox 4 without issue. They are all updated for the latest version. Additionally, disabling them makes no difference in the presentation of these issues.

If you are having that many issues, and if you have tried all five of the Five Rs, then what I would do is take it to an Apple store to the genius bar and let them look at it. It surely sounds as if there might be something wrong with the iPod itself, and if there is, and they can't fix it, they will give you a new one on the spot (assuming they have them in stock).

well, you know how it is - glitches that usually resolve with a hard reset etc
then a restore. then a factory restore....then ..... nothing fixes so I try the next step with apple online - fill out my serial number and find it is a couple of weeks out of date - and then with the holidays who has time to get to the apple store? this is my second 4s handset as it is - first one the glass cracked from L to R without any impact/damage etc - they changed it out automatically because it's a 'known fault' apparently - so technically, this handset is only 6 months old - but warranty is from original purchase date -
never imagined it would turn out to be a warranty issue with the phone - and hey maybe when I get a chance to go to the apple store they'll be sympathetic, but I won't be able to get there till at least Jan 4th as it is. On the other hand, another iOS update might resolve the issue - but how long till that release? at the moment I'm having to use my old 3gs for wifi and 4s for phone!!!
