Xgl - xfce4 - conky help

I started running compiz/xgl and xfce4 and it all works fine but after conky starts and I click on the desktop conky seems to disappear behinf the wallpaper?
I think it may be due to that xfce is set 'allow xfce to manage the desktop' in the desktop settings. I can untick this but when I logout and tick save current session it does not seem to work, as when I log back in it's still ticked and xfce is still managing the desktop.
Any way to untick this option some other way, such as edit a .*rc file somewhere?

Hi,
Found a workaround for this one.  If you put conky in .xinitrc, before your startxfce4 command, it will run on the root window.
Like byte said, the problem is that xfdesktop sits on top of that, hiding conky.  If you kill xfdesktop you lose the ability to set a wallpaper image or colour and to have desktop menu.
So, some searching around other forums turned up the solution:  Any scripts in ~/Desktop/Autostart will be run after Xfce4, and hence xfdesktop, are already running.
Create ~/Desktop/Autostart/ and place a shell script in there, mine is called startconky.sh
# startconky.sh
# Shell script to run conky on top of xfdesktop
conky &
exit 0
This seems to work and runs conky on top of the xfdesktop window.
Hope this helps..
Francis

  • Xfce4-session-helper NOT FOUND

    After upgrading xfce4-session the other day,
    [PACMAN] upgraded xfce4-session (4.10.0-6 -> 4.10.0-7)
    These errors appear in syslog:
    Apr 29 13:27:56 arch-top slim[342]: (xfce4-session:397): xfce4-session-WARNING **: Unable to launch "xfce4-settings-helper": Failed to execute child process "xfce4-settings-helper" (No such file or directory)
    Apr 29 13:27:56 arch-top slim[342]: (xfce4-session:397): xfce4-session-WARNING **: Unable to launch "xfce4-settings-helper": Failed to execute child process "xfce4-settings-helper" (No such file or directory)
    They appear twice, together, like above (on startup).

    According to http://www.xfce.org/about/tour (one of the first hits for  xfce4-session-helper), this helper was merged into a settings daemon in 4.10. Either it's a bug or you have some leftover bits from 4.8.

  • Conky Help

    I am new to using conky and am looking at setting up a conky file for my arch openbox setup.  What I am looking for is something that goes along the top of the screen (1280x1024 monitor) that includes the computer name, kernel version, uptime, cpu's (quad core) and mem usage.  Don't require drive space specs or wireless or network info.  A black background with white lettering would be awesome.  However, I have absolutely no idea how I would go about setting this up.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    There is some nice conky info here
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Conky
    and here
    http://conky.sourceforge.net/
    Also I found a nice conky config that may fit your needs.

  • [Solved] Need some conky help

    Hi,
    I'm battling with two conky issues related to audacious & hddtemp.
    EDIT: Feel a bit daft now, ${if_running audacious}${exec audtool current-song-tuple-data title} - ${exec audtool current-song-tuple-data artist} sorted the audacious issue out.
    I cannot get HDD temperature to be displayed, it's just blank. I have hddtemp daemon running and I can get the details from the hdd with hddtemp and nc.
    Temperature: ${alignr}${execi sudo hddtemp /dev/sda 127.0.0.1 7634 | cut -c20-21}°C
    I've also tried using execi nc 127.0.0.1 7634 | cut -c20-21 but both just come up blank.
    I'm probably missing something obvious, any ideas?

    To answer the original question, just for future reference...
    "execi" requires an interval before the command.  So instead of
    Temperature: ${alignr}${execi sudo hddtemp /dev/sda 127.0.0.1 7634 | cut -c20-21}°C
    you should use something like
    Temperature: ${alignr}${execi 30 sudo hddtemp /dev/sda 127.0.0.1 7634 | cut -c20-21}°C
    That would refresh the info every 30 seconds.

  • No cursor theme in XGL / XFCE4

    No matter where in my system I set my cursor theme, it's always the default black theme.  What can I do to make my cursor theme visible in XGL / XFCE?  I'm launching them by running startxgl 0 xfce nvidia.

    wimac wrote:
    try putting:
    export XCURSOR_THEME="Bluecurve"
    in your ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
    replace Bluecurve with the theme of your choice and restart X that should do it...
    There isn't any such file. ~/.config/openbox just has a "lxde-rc.xml" in it.
    fwojciec, that worked. Thanks a million. Looks like I'm juuuuust about set on this thing. A few more hiccups to figure out and I'll be golden (all related to cosmetics).

  • Using slim and xfce4, something crashes on exit

    I recently did a fresh install of Arch onto an older PC that I have. It's running a P4 3.06GHz, an nVidia GeForce FX 5900, and 1GB RAM. Because of the lower resources, I decided to use xfce4 and slim. I have a monitor and TV hooked up through s-video with the "seperate X screen" option. Whenever I logout of xfce (this includes, logout, reboot, shutdown), it goes to a blank black screen with a cursor at the top left and just hangs. I have slim configured to run from inittab, so it picks up after a couple seconds. However, if I run startx from console, and then logout of xfce the system just hangs and wont accept any keyboard input (including ctrl+alt+function to switch run levels). Also, if I choose to shutdown or reboot, the system will do so but the only thing I see is the blank screen until the POST. If I do a startx from console, the logout, I'm able to ssh in from my laptop, login and issue a reboot (again the screen doesn't change until the POST). Also, if I turn the "seperate x screen" option off, and just run the desktop on the monitor, it doesn't freeze. I've worked my way through a number of issues so far, but this one has me completely stumped. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration or if it's just a problem with the graphics driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated.

  • Xfce4 programs not shown in menu!?

    I installed xfce4 on 2 pcs. On both no xfce4 programs are shown in the menu of the taskbar. Internet,Office,... programs are alls shown, but the others like xfce4-settings-manager,... not.
    Does somebody know, how I can fix this?

    Having the same issue, Settings is missing from the right click menu therefore I have no Settings Manager sub menu. I have tried clearing ~/.cache/xfce4 folder, stopping and restarting xfce4-sessions-helper but to no avail. I have searched Arch forums and xfce forums but have not found a solution unless I overlooked something Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • XGL + KDE = groovy, XGL + Gnome = GDM won't start...

    I've followed the instructions in the Arch wiki to the 'T', and also tried on a separate occasion  to follow the Gentoo wiki directions for getting GDM to work with XGL; neither has helped me. When I boot up, GDM tries to load (I get the watch-face cursor), but it doesn't load... it waits for a while, then flashes to a tty and back again, does this waiting & flashing twice more, then I get an 'Xserver failed to start' BSOD.
    I can nest an XGL Xserver in a 'startx'd gnome instance no problem, and everything works great. Also, I've got XGL working with KDE flawlessly, using KDM, a few days ago. GDM's being a real bugger though, and I can't think how to fix it :shock:
    Any suggestions? The log in /var/log/gdm is of no use.

    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xgl … starts_XGL
    Use the second method so that GDM starts on a regular X server
    I dont use XGL myself cause its very unstable.. but i might try it (or not cause i just read all the problems on the bottom.. its really not worth the fun i can have lol)

  • [SOLVED] Xfce 4.8, "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found"

    Hello fellow Archers!
    I just upgraded my Xfce installation to version 4.8, but I have a weird problem with xfce4-panel. After upgrading the system via pacman I've rebooted, and after logging in I couldn't see the Xfce's panel anymore! Moreover, a dialog box pops up saying that "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found". I've tried to fix this issue by launching xfce4-panel through a terminal, and then saving the session before logging out. Now when I log in, I can finally see the panel, but the pop up window keeps coming out every single time. Do you have any suggestions on what could be the issue?
    Thanks in advance!

    Behemot you'd better start a different thread. May be a different issue as this one is solved.
    isn't it supposed to start from /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml ? Here's what's in mine:

  • [Solved] Xfce4.8: App shortcuts not working after update

    Hello,
    since pacman upgraded my Xfce to 4.8, my application shortcuts are no longer working. I especially need them to emulate a third button with Super_L and bind the netbook function keys for audio volume/muting to amixer calls. I already tried to rebind all shortcuts, but that didn't help. Any ideas?
    Edit: I already tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … 7t_working, but this didn't help
    Edit2: Solved it. Apparently I lost xfce4-settings-helper during the migration from 4.6. So I restarted it manually and then saved my session.

    I am not bothering with windows 10 my friend, it is too much of an newbe baby at the moment and there are just too many bug fixes need doing in my opinion.  I did manage to get my dolby home theatre to work again in windows 10, but it was an awful dulled down version with only half the features of the original that came with the version that was on my pc. My plan is to stick to windows 8.1 until it's death.  When they withdrawl all the security patches for windows 8.1 and it becomes obsolete, then I will be forced to trash my pc again and go to windows 10, was not much fun mind spending 3.5 days putting everything back to its former state.   Hope they do make windows 10 more stable and fix a lot of the bugs.  I tried opening videos and pictures in windows 10.... result = missing element errors.... and  error, error,  error,,,  So I think I will wait until 28 July 16 to when the last day of my free upgrade and reservation to windows 10 becomes mandatory.  (This is I day before my year to upgrade expires). Thanks for your post.  Will

  • Help feature broken in Xfce

    Hello!
    Hoping that one of the Xfce / Archlinux gurus can help me out with this:
    when I click on About -> Help in Thunar or in any other application, or press F1, nothing happens.
    I'm using Xfce 4.10.
    How to fix this? Can it be related to the default browser setting, since the help can sometimes be viewed in an internet browser?
    Thanks much!

    Thank you, Trilby!
    When running from the terminal, and then clicking on "Help", nothing more is displayed in the terminal window.
    It actually seems that only the "xfce4 default applications" have this problem, i.e. any application below which has an "Help" menu:
    % xfce4-
    xfce4-about xfce4-display-settings xfce4-notes-settings xfce4-popup-notes xfce4-session
    xfce4-accessibility-settings xfce4-keyboard-settings xfce4-notifyd-config xfce4-popup-whiskermenu xfce4-session-logout
    xfce4-appearance-settings xfce4-kiosk-query xfce4-panel xfce4-popup-windowmenu xfce4-session-settings
    xfce4-appfinder xfce4-mime-settings xfce4-pm-helper xfce4-power-manager xfce4-settings-editor
    xfce4-clipman xfce4-mixer xfce4-popup-applicationsmenu xfce4-power-manager-settings xfce4-settings-manager
    xfce4-clipman-settings xfce4-mouse-settings xfce4-popup-clipman xfce4-screenshooter xfce4-taskmanager
    xfce4-dict xfce4-notes xfce4-popup-directorymenu xfce4-sensors xfce4-terminal
    Also including Thunar.
    The help is functioning properly (opens a browser window) in other apps like qBittorent, Orage Calendar, etc.
    Any clue?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Xfce4 and Openbox

    Okay all,
    I tried searching, didn't have any luck, so here goes:
    I'm following along with the Wiki here to configure Xfce to run with Openbox.  The Wiki says:
    Log into a normal Xfce4 session. From your terminal, type:
    $ killall xfwm4 ; openbox & exit
    This kills xfwm4, runs Openbox, and closes the terminal. Log out, being sure to check the "Save session for future logins" box. On your next login, Xfce4 should use Openbox as its window manager.
    When I do this, Xfce flickers for a moment as the terminal closes and sends me back to the desktop, but nothing has changed.  I then proceed to log out, checking the box as instructed, and log back in.  However, Xfce does not use Openbox as the window manager when I do this.
    When I run:
    $ ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    It returns:
    username 2210 1.5 0.2 137084 9204 tty1 S 02:12 0:00 xfwm4 --display :0.0 --sm-client-id ...
    I've tried this several times without luck.  I have ObConf installed already, and also installed Xfce4 (and was able to get it to load properly using startxfce4, naturally) as well as Openbox (the installation order went Xfce4, Openbox, ObConf in case it matters.)
    Any idea what the issue might be?
    If I run just
    $ killall xfwm4 ; openbox
    (ie, without the exit), I receive the message
    A window manager is already running on screen 0

    I have tried both of your above methods, here's the results:
    openbox --replace
    When I do this, it doesn't return control to me in the terminal, so I have to CTRL-C out of it, at which point Openbox isn't running anymore.
    So, I modified it to:
    openbox --replace &
    Now, when I do this, it starts Openbox (the window styling changes obviously), and returns:
    [1] 1687
    Then, running
    ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    returns
    eric 1687 0.0 0.1 96800 7940 pts/0 S 20:09 0:00 openbox --replace
    which indicates Openbox is now running properly.
    So, then I proceed to logout using the menu option, and I check the box for "Save session for future use.".  Upon logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    (xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    (xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    Upon running
    startxfce4
    again, my desktop returns, however my cursor has turned to a black X, and the desktop icon for Home is now partially covered by the top toolbar.  Additionally, when I start a terminal, the top of the terminal is actually overlapping with the menu and part of it is off the screen to the top.
    Running
    ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    reveals that neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
    So, then if I run
    openbox &
    I can then at least click the top menu bar and move the terminal back fully onto the screen.  If I click "X" for the terminal, it hides the terminal but it does not disappear from the application bar.  If I then logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
    xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running. Leaving...
    (xfce4-settings-helper:1663): xfce4-settings-helper-WARNING **: Failed to get the _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS property.
    xfce4-panel: No window manager registered on screen 0. To start the panel without this check, run with --disable-wm-check.
    (xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    (xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    When I run
    startxfce4
    again, it returns to the previous issue where my desktop shows but the cursor is a black X and the icons and toolbar overlap, and neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
    If, instead of running
    openbox &
    when I have no window manager, I instead run
    xfwm4
    it returns to normal (terminal closes properly, nothing is overlapping), and when I logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
    xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running.
    When I next run
    startxfce4
    everything loads properly (read, it loads normally as it did before I replaced xfwm4 with Openbox, so there are no errors with overlapping icons and menu bars and the terminal actually closes), and there are no warning messages displayed on logout.
    So, what gives?

  • [solved] xfce4-panel 4.8.0-1 only on one desktop

    Hello,
    xfce4-panel got updated today to version 4.8.0-1. Now I have the problem, that the panel appears only on the desktop it was started, but does not remain sticky as expected.  I'm using plain openbox without xfce stuff. I also removed the old configs, same problem.
    Any hints?
    Vlad
    PS: Set the openbox internal application settings to sticky in rc.xml:
    <application name="xfce4-panel">
            <desktop>all</desktop>
        </application>
    Now it appears on all desktops, but it should work without this. It's definitely a bug...

    I figured out a way of solving this one .
    It seems that the problem dissappears once you run xfwm4, even if you run openbox --replace afterwards
    To fix it, I edited the file /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml
    My old xfce4-sessions.xml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <channel name="xfce4-session" version="1.0">
    <property name="general" type="empty">
    <property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>
    </property>
    <property name="sessions" type="empty">
    <property name="Failsafe" type="empty">
    <property name="IsFailsafe" type="bool" value="true"/>
    <property name="Count" type="int" value="5"/>
    <property name="Client0_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="openbox"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client0_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client1_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfce4-panel"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client1_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client2_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="Thunar"/>
    <value type="string" value="--daemon"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client2_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client3_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfdesktop"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client3_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client4_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfce4-settings-helper"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client4_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    </property>
    </property>
    <property name="splash" type="empty">
    <property name="Engine" type="string" value=""/>
    </property>
    </channel>
    My new one:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <channel name="xfce4-session" version="1.0">
    <property name="general" type="empty">
    <property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>

    </property>
    <property name="Client0_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client1_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfce4-panel"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client1_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client2_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="Thunar"/>
    <value type="string" value="--daemon"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client2_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client3_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfdesktop"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client3_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>

    <value type="string" value="--replace"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client5_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    </property>
    </property>
    <property name="splash" type="empty">
    <property name="Engine" type="string" value=""/>
    </property>
    </channel>
    What I did was change the window manager back to xfwm4 here:
    <property name="Client0_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfwm4"/>
    </property>
    Then make openbox --replace run after that (to kill xfwm and start openbox) by adding this:
    <property name="Client5_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="openbox"/>
    <value type="string" value="--replace"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client5_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    And lastly, make xfce recognize that last entry by changing this:
    <property name="Count" type="int" value="5"/>
    for this:
    <property name="Count" type="int" value="6"/>
    Relog after that and there you go

  • [SOLVED] XFCE4 Desktop not displaying properly.

    Hello,
    I've just recently installed Arch on my laptop, and installed XFCE4 as my Desktop Environment. When I start the machine and login, I enter
    startxfce4
      When XFCE starts,  the background flickers terribly and I can just make out the little mouse in the back. Then the screen goes black. The cursor is enabled and I can use it but there's nothing to click on. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work.
    startx
    works, and I can start XFCE from within and it shows up normally. However, when I move my cursor from the console of X to the desktop on XFCE it begins flickering again and the output on the X console is
    (xfce4-settings-helper:911): xfce4-settings-helper-WARNING **: Failed to get the _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS property.
    xfce4-panel-Message: no valid position defined: (null)

    xfdesktop[919] starting up
    Then it finally gives up and xfce shuts down.
    I've googled and browsed the forums until my eyes hurt and I can't find a solution for my specific problem.
    Any help is much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

    I don't know if it matters now, but I'd like to post my solution in case anyone else comes across this problem.
    You were pretty much correct Tyo. I did pacman -Syu before and after the installation of xfce, but my problem was after the installation there was a file at /etc/profile.d/locale.sh that was causing a conflict and not allowing the system to update at all. I never noticed it and when it went back to the cursor so fast I automatically assumed everything was up to date and it had nothing to do. I removed the locale.sh file, ran pacman -Syu, and everything updated as it should and xfce works flawlessly now.
    Well, you know what they say about assuming...
    Thanks a lot guys.

  • XFCE takes a long time to start up sometimes...

    I use 'ck-launch-session xfce4-session' to start XFCE.
    It starts a session in which only xfce-settings-helper, xfdesktop, and xfwm4 are running. In my autostarted applications I have an entry called Autostart.sh which corresponds to a .desktop file:
    .config/autostart/Autostart.sh.desktop
    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Version=0.9.4
    Type=Application
    Name=Autostart.sh
    Comment=
    Exec=/home/rob/.config/autostart/autostart.sh
    StartupNotify=false
    Terminal=false
    Hidden=false
    .config/autostart/autostart.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    stalonetray &
    netwmpager &
    conky &
    claws-mail &
    pidgin &
    volwheel &
    But I think this somehow really slows down xfce's loading. It seems to load the xfce stuff quickly, then it sits for sometimes 20 seconds before all the other stuff pops into life.
    Any ideas?

    Wow I'm dense. I even looked at that file and I didn't see what it was doing. I just changed /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml and took out a few entries.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <channel name="xfce4-session" version="1.0">
    <property name="general" type="empty">
    <property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>
    </property>
    <property name="sessions" type="empty">
    <property name="Failsafe" type="empty">
    <property name="IsFailsafe" type="bool" value="true"/>
    <property name="Count" type="int" value="5"/>
    <property name="Client0_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfwm4"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client0_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client3_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfdesktop"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client3_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="Client4_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="xfce4-settings-helper"/>
    </property>
    <property name="Client4_PerScreen" type="bool" value="false"/>
    </property>
    </property>
    <property name="splash" type="empty">
    <property name="Engine" type="string" value=""/>
    </property>
    </channel>
    Now it doesn't start xfce4-panel or Thunar --daemon and I don't have to use the session manager. And start up is way faster than with the session manager, which is clearly not working properly.
