XML as input in InDesign

Hi,
I am sorry to say that but as I see, there are not a lot of answers when there are questions regarding XML as text input.
Perhaps can somebody make some suggestions regarding where can I search for such answers (books, other forums ...)?
Thanks,
Dan

  • How to read an external XML file in a indesign Plugin?

    Hi All,
    Can you please guide in reading an external XML file in a indesign Plugin in MAC system. I am an windows user.We are using this file for reading some inputs.
    Thanks,

    Hello Daniel,
    I am uncertain about the actual question. If you are developing a plug-in or otherwise interfacing with the guts of ID, I suggest asking the question in the SDK forum:
    InDesign SDK Forum
    Otherwise, what is it you are wanting to know concerning importing XML into InDesign?

  • How-to use Excel for the XML file input?

    Hello all,
    Following our discussion with Gerhard Steinhuber on the very nice tutorial from Horst Schaude , "How to upload mass data via XML File Input" , I am starting this new discussion.
    In the comments section of this previous cited tutorial, Rufat Gadirov explains how to use a generated XML from Eclipse instead of your XSD file as your source in Excel.
    However, in spite of all the instructions, I am still facing the same issue in Excel when I try to save my file as XML : "The XML maps in this workbook are not exportable".
    What I try to do is to create one or more Sales Orders with multiple Items in it from a XML File Input, using excel to enter data.
    The part with the File input is working (if I directly upload my file to the webDAV, it creates a sales order instance with multiple items).
    The only missing part is the Excel data input that I cannot make work. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Here is my XML file that I try to use as a source in Excel before inputing data from Excel:

    Hello Jacques-Antoine,
    I suppose that as you have tried to construct a map from the schema, you have taken the elements from the List level down. In this case I also can't export the map.
    But if you take the elements from the level MySalesOrderUploaded down, you'll get the exportable map (screenshots)

  • Custom action with XML type input and output parameter.

    Hi,
    I want to develop custom action with xml type input and/or output parameter.
    Is there sample code for java side. How is the definition of input and/or output parameter and set/get methods?
    does it need special .jar file to develop custom action like this?
    Thanks.

    Cemil - yes, you can use XML data types.  Use the class
    com.sap.lhcommon.xml.XMLDataType
    for your parameter type.  Here is a snippet from a custom action we use to log XML (instead of just returning the #text node like the default logger does):
    public class XMLLogger extends ActionReflectionBase
        private String source;
        private String eventType;
        private String textMessage;
        private XMLDataType xmlMessage;
        public XMLLogger()
            log = new Logger("UserLog");
            source = DEFAULT_SOURCE;
            eventType = TYPE_INFO;
            textMessage = "";
            xmlMessage = new XMLDataType();
        public XMLDataType getXmlMessage()
            return xmlMessage;
        public void setXmlMessage(XMLDataType xmlMessage)
            this.xmlMessage = xmlMessage;
        public void Invoke(Transaction transaction, ILog ilog)
            StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
            sb.append('[');
            sb.append(source);
            sb.append("] ");
            sb.append(textMessage);
            sb.append(XMLUtils.convertXmlToString(xmlMessage));
    XMLUtils is a helper class we wrote - it's just a bunch of standard Java XML boilerplate code.  The important part you need to know is XMLDataType.getDocument() will return an org.w3c.dom.Document.
    I hope that was enough information to help.

  • Report with XML as input !

    Hello,
    I am hv been trying to create a simple report with an XML input but by the end of it, it doesnt give any data on the report.
    I tried it with XML + SQL input, it gave me a blank report and when I tried with a pure SQL input it did give data in the report. I enabled the trace option but couldnt get to the core of the problem.
    My XML & XSD file are all valid, they are auto-generated.
    The report doesnt give any error either.
    Any clue what the problem could be ??

    I really have no idea what kind of file that is and how is the structure, but if it´s valid XML, I guess you could use InDesigns Tags to Styles mapping engine to format incoming stuff....

  • XML and tables in InDesign

    Hi everyone,
    I'm just starting to explore the possibilities of XML in InDesign and in need of some general information:
    The projects that I'm working with that I think would benefit from the XML workflow are files that include a number of tables (e.g., product names, descriptions, prices, etc. with header rows and some merged cells).
    The content of the tables are the same for a brochure-style layout and a poster-style layout but the brochure tables need to be tall and narrow and the poster tables short and wide (basically flipping the axes). So far I've handled this through a complicated dance of exporting the tables as text and using Excel to flip the axes and then import the tables back into InDesign (in order for this to work, I have to un-merge all merged cells and it still isn't perfect but a reasonable starting point).
    The editors make changes to the content in InDesign using InCopy (adding or removing rows or columns to add new products and/or prices, etc.)
    The poster and brochure versions of the file don't need to be live at the same time--they're used at different times of the year so it's a matter of loading the final brochure content into the poster then making any changes to the poster and 6 months later importing the final poster content into the brochure. And the cycle continues.
    Would XML handle well? The little I've read so far about XML and tables indicates that each cell would need to be tagged. This could easily result in mis-tagging a cell which would screw up the content import, right? I'm talking about hundreds (thousands?) of cells.
    And since the structure of the table would be changing due to adding/removing rows/columns, it seems I would need to tag each cell of the tables every time I wanted to import content.
    Am I understanding all this correctly?
    Thanks for your input.

    Hi
    You are right each cell nee to be tagged in XML tables, if you are working with more than hundreds/thousands of cells, be careful in content tagging. adding/removing columns/rows would really affect the structure of the XML and if it need to extract/export the content the structure of XML will not be correct. It is better to avoid XML tables in case of adding/removing columns/rows.

  • How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

    I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
    I created  an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
    Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
    I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
    So my question is the following:
    How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
    number of XML files could be unknown.
    Thank you very much for your answer.

    Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
    I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
    My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Help using multiple if else statements & manual dynamic xml data input to trigger a goto and play.

    Below is code that has a timer countdown that reads off of the computer. Below in bold is code to read "if it reaches the date, go to and play frame (2).
    timer.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, updateTime);
      timer.stop();
      gotoAndPlay(2);
    Below is code that is manual input-   I had set up a dynamic txt field in flash named it : raffle_tix_remain When loaded on to the host I can manulally update the xml code and the change will take effect.
    raffle_tix_remain.text = root.loaderInfo.parameters.raffle_tix_remain;
    My question:  Since the raffle_tix_remain is a manual input from a user to xml  Is there a way to tell flash once it refreshes and "raffle_ tix_ remain"  goes to (0) zero gotoAndPlay(2); and let it play like a "sold out" sign
    i guess that would be a  if else statement.

  • In PI how do I convert the XML payload (input) to a text file and send out

    I am extracting data from SAP and sending thru XI / PI to a file (non-sap system).
    On the receiving end, I need the file to be a text file, with one row for each "FTZ_Row concatenated_data" tag in the input.  It needs to be just a plain text file with no XML tags.
    Currently the file gets one record which matches exactly to the XML payload below.

    thanks for the input but I am still having issues - I get an empty file when I use the content conversion option.

      recordset structure   FTZ_Row
    FTZ_Row.fieldSeparator     #
    FTZ_Row.endSeparator     'nl'
    I am not sure why the following row looks like this ??
        <FTZ_Row concatenated_data="CONCATENATED DATA 1" />
    I thought FTZ_Row would be one tag and "concatenated_data" would be another one.
    any help would be appreciated.
    I have read many entries/blogs/etc in SDN but and tried many different setups, but nothing is working.

  • Importing xml with xslt in InDesign CS4

    Hello All,
    i need someone's help who's an expert at xml and xslt features of InDesign CS4.
    i work in publication, besides our magazines we produce yearbooks with lots of repetative information fields in them. we get the data in xml fromat which we flow in to InDesign. the xml files are very simple, here's an example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
    <Root>
    <Story>
          <Country> Afganistan </Country>
    <Company_ID>
       <Company_Name> Kam Air </Company_Name>
       <Company_Code> 1 </Company_Code>
       <Address_text> 1205 Qalla Fatuha </Address_text>
       <Address_text> P.O.Box 456 </Address_text>
       <Address_text> Kabul </Address_text>
       <Address_text> 22004 </Address_text>
       <Address_text> Afganistan </Address_text>
       <Telephone_text> Telephone: +93 20 2200 108 </Telephone_text>
       <Fax_text> Fax: +93 20 2200 110 </Fax_text>
       <Email_text> E-mail: [email protected] </Email_text>
       <Website_text> Website: www.flykamair.com </Website_text>
       <Personel_text> Abdul Raquib, chief Executive <Personel_text>
       <Personelmail_text> ([email protected]) </Personelmail_text>
       <Job_code> A1 </Job_code>
    </Company_ID>
         <Country> Albania </Country>
    etc.
    </Story>
    </Root>
    the problem is we don't want <Company_Code> and <Job_code> elements displayed in the InDesign file.
    so we created an xslt file that shoud get rid of these two unwanted elements (obviously the xml file above was pointed to this xslt file)
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>

    Thanks everyone!

    Here's the sort of thing I mean in more detail.

       <Job_code> A1 </Job_code>
    </Company_ID>
    </Country>
    </Root>
    Note that I have renamed the XSL file "transform2.xsl". I have got rid of the "Story" tag, and I have nested the tags more appropriately, with a new tag "Country_name". Here's the XSL:
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
    <xsl:template match="/">
    <Root>
    <xsl:for-each select="/Root/Country">
    <Country>
    <Country_name><xsl:value-of select="Country_name"/></Country_name>
    <xsl:for-each select="Company_ID">
    <Company_Name><xsl:value-of select="Company_Name"/></Company_Name>
    <Address_text><xsl:value-of select="Address_text"/></Address_text>
    <Telephone_text><xsl:value-of select="Telephone_text"/></Telephone_text>
    <Fax_text><xsl:value-of select="Fax_text"/></Fax_text>
    <Email_text><xsl:value-of select="Email_text"/></Email_text>
    <Website_text><xsl:value-of select="Website_text"/></Website_text>
    <Personel_text><xsl:value-of select="Personel_text"/></Personel_text>
    <Personelmail_text><xsl:value-of select="Personelmail_text"/></Personelmail_text>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </Country>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </Root>
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    (That file should be saved as "transform2.xsl" to match the link on line 2 of the XML.)
    Hope that works -- Jeremy

  • XML import/export in inDesign

    Hello,
    I am new to inDesign so please bear with me if I am asking something basic. I have been searching for an answer on Google, but could not find it. Here's what I am trying to do:
    We have a lot of existing inDesign files in our company. Our intent is to manage the individual components of these files in a third-party content management system. The CMS uses XML like most other systems.Since inDesign has a lot of built in XML features, I decided to try it out in a sample file (none of our existing inDesign files have XML tags). I created tags and manually tagged the content. After this, I was able to export the content to an XML file. Great so far.
    The question is, can I export the layout and style information also? If so, can this be extracted to a separate file, maybe another XML file? The reason I am asking is that if I store the content XML along with layout and style info in the CMS, I should be able to use these to open a new inDesign session, import the layout information and then import my XML content file and it should display with all formatting and style intact. Is this possible?
    thanks for your time and help.

    Thanks, this is good info.
    I tried an export and was able to reimport succesfully. But, when I open the IMDL archive file, I see a lot of folders and files (Master spreads, resources, spreads etc.). It looks like I need to store this entire IMDL file in our CMS. That's ok, I can do that, but I am not sure if this works. Here's what I tried:
    - I imported the IMDL file into a new inDesign session. This showed my content correctly formatted.
    - I made a change to the exported XML file that I had created earlier from the "export to XML" command. Such changes will be done through the CMS system using workflows.
    - I imported this file and used "File->import XML" and selected "Merge Content". In the next dialog, I selected "Only import elements that match existing structure" and "Do not import contents of whitespace-only elements".
    - This did not bring in my changes as I thought it would. The styles were also screwed up.
    I may be doing something wrong, though. Will try again next week.
    thanks
