XP installed successfully, but now won't boot into OSX

I installed XP onto my 06 MB Pro without any problems. Now when I restart it boots into XP; holding down the Option key to invoke the Startup Disk Manager doesn't work.
How do I get into OSX to set the main (OSX) partition as the startup drive?

I ran Boot Camp Assisstant, followed instructions (partitioned HD: 1 for OSX, 1 smaller for Windows), inserted XP install disk, then followed Windows installer.
Windows install disk reformatted smaller partition into NTFS, then installed XP.
The Book now boots straight into XP, and holding Option won't invoke the Startup Disk screen to choose between OSX partition or Windows partition. I triple checked that the right partition was reformatted, so am confident it was the right one!
+If you have an external hard drive, you may want to set it up so you can boot from there; have space to use WinClone to backup Windows at some point, as well as clone/backup OS X.+
I have external drives, but they're all USB so no Target Mode I'm afraid.
+If you inserted and installed Apple Setup while in Windows, you should have Apple Boot CAmp control panel startup disk and other services now.+
I haven't inserted any other disks since the XP installation - do I now need to insert my Leopard install disk? How can I check if I have the Boot Camp control panel on the OSX partition (will it show up in XP anywhere?) ?

MY iPhone added a device successfully but now won't stop searching. Has used all battery  any suggestions

Bluetooth when turned on is always in a discovery/pairing mode. It does not really use that much battery when doing so, but if you want to turn it off, you can do so from the Control Center, an easier way to turn it off. I've never turned mine off, and it does not make a noticeable impact on my battery. I suggest you check to see if there isn't something else that is consuming your battery.

  • Pismo now won't boot into X (but runs 9.1)

I originally upgraded PBG3(FW)(pismo) to panther about a year ago. All was well and it worked without any problem.
Then at the suggestion of software update I did one of the security updates (to be honest i can now no longer remember which one) and after that it crashed and refused to boot.
It will not boot from my panther CD - sometimes gets as far as the grey apple and spinning disk, then stalls.
It will boot from a backup 9.1 CD and I can re-install 9.1 on the HD, which then boots and runs normally (wow its fast).
From within 9.1 the panther CD mounts and verifies normally. In startup disk it is greyed out so i can't chose to start from it. If I launch the installer it tries to restart but won't and gives an error to the effect of not being able to startup from the startup CD.
It will not boot from a clone of my PM G4 installation from a firewire HD.
The panther CD will startup the G4 (so it must work) and I can install panther on the pismo HD when it is in FW target disk mode. But the pismo will still not then boot from this install.
Its as if something in the update stopped the poor pismo from starting up from any version of X. No other hardware changes made between it being OK and now refusing to boot.
Any help very gratefully recieved !

    Hi Jon:
Good call on removing the RAM, which is often a culprit of kernel panics, and you're right, Panther does need at least 128MB to run. You could try another stick of RAM (I'd recommend Kingston or Azen)....
I've installed Panther on close to 50 mac of various flavors in the last two years, everything from 350 MHz iMac to a dual 2GHz PowerMac G5, and have rarely encountered a problem that couldn't be resolved with a simple hardware change (RAM, optical or hard drive). Right now, as it turns out, I'm having problems with a 350MHz iMac. Panther installs ok, all the updates go ok, all the installed apps run fine, but as soon as I try to change the screen saver, it freezes. I've wiped the drive, written zeros, and reinstalled, and both times I get the exact same thing. I've swapped RAM, which makes no difference, so I'm about to try a different hard drive.
Let us know how replacing the mach_kernel file goes, and good luck!

  • Cloned 500GB HDD inT450S and Win8.1 to 1TB HDD, but now won't boot, even though HDD is seen

This concerns a new T450S; Win 8.1 Pro; I upgraded 4MB Ram to 12MB by adding Crucial Ballistix 8MB 1.2v DIMM, and everything worked as it should. Then, before any user files were created, I cloned the largest available 500GB Seagate (w/512KB sectors) from Lenovo to an aftermarket 1TB Seagate (w/4096KB sectors) using HDClone 5 Basic ($39 online). Cloning and conversion to larger sectors appeared to occur without incident. Ran Lenovo diagnostics on both the memory and storage and both passed. Now attempts to boot take me straight into setup "Boot" dialog and although the 1TB HDD is listed, arrow only points to PCI Lan (I assume this means the only bootable disc) and my attempts to switch to 1TB drive and pressing enter, end up after screen flash, to the same "Boot" dialog. Any Thoughts? I was thinking of re-installing old unmolested HDD and creating a recovery disc, then re-installing the new 1TB drive and then attempting to run recovery disc, but Lenovo case and HDD location not designed for repeated changes, so I thought I'd ask for help here first.

I was thinking the same. Seems like flipping the temp sensor cable fixes the poles as far as actual sensor detection by the SMC, but it must mess with the other jumper settings hence the no-boot issue. The annoying part is that my iMac already has the WD temp sensor, so theoretically it should be the correct cable :/
Oh well. I was just looking at some fan control apps myself. I was thinking about Macs Fan Control though over HDD Fan Control, since it seems to have slightly better reviews (and the $0 price tag is better than $35 ) http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/47386/macs-fan-control

  • G4 boot from external OS9, but now won't boot back to 10.4?

Sorry if this may be a little confusing..
Basically I have an old sawtooth/AGP single processor unit from a friend who moved to New Zealand to work on a movie/graphics project.
He upgraded it to a newtech 1.6 processor.
The problem is I booted into 9.2 via external firewire as I still have some specialty cards/apps that are not supported in 10. The mouse will not "click" for selection purposes, it only moves the cursor which does not allow me to go into the control panels and select the "startup disk" utility and go back to 10.4 or anything else for that matter.
I unplugged the external firewire while shut down and restarted assuming it would pick one of the two internal drives with OSX.
It did not! It gets to the grey OSX "apple logo" screen and then powers off.
When I plug the external back in, it will start all the way to desktop9, but the same problem persists in that neither the new wireless mouse nor the old G3 puck will click.
I do not have an apple keyboard that works, so the "new" wireless one will not work for keyboard startup commands, so I cannot just press "x" or "c" and boot to another source that way. I do have a G3 usb mouse I dug out of the closet (I just recently recycled my old Apple II+ from said same closet) but as I said it does not "click".
I tried the programmer's button while in OS9 to try to command boot to the OSx drives. The dialog box showed up, but it won't take the commands; ie: nothing happened.
Next I tried plugging the firewire (while shut down) into an external with OSX. Nothing!
I plugged it back into the 9 drive and get to the desktop with the same useless mouse problem.
I am considering pulling the internal battery in hopes it will kill the boot memory and perhaps default back to the OSX disks again.
Any thoughts and ideas are much appreciated!
    Many Thanks!
    El Jefe de Biosmell!

    Hi, biosmell -
I am considering pulling the internal battery in hopes it will kill the boot memory and perhaps default back to the OSX disks again.
That should work to reset PRAM, which contains the boot volume selection. Be sure to also pull the power cord, and to wait long enough; about a half hour should be fine.
After replacing the battery and reconnecting the power cord, wait another couple of minutes and then boot it - by default it should boot to the first OS it finds on a local (i.e., internal) hard drive.

  • Firewire  card installation failed, now won't boot into os x

G4 gigabit dual 450 was working fine except firewire port wasn't so I installed a firewire port card. On reboot i got/get a nice startup tone but the screen stops on the grey on grey apple image... with the grey bar circle spinning, and won't move into os x. I tried the button switch (PMU? counted to 12) by the internal battery, but no change. HELP, please...
(I took the firewire card out)

    Hi
    Dale Wiesshaar,
I installed YellowDog Linux last week. I deleted the installation, personal reasons, and tried to install this week.
Guess what happened? All three firewire ports are not working.
When trying to install YDL, the installation tries to load the ohci1394 driver and abends, dumps, throws and exception, whatever.
In addition, none of the 4 daisy chained firewire drives appear on the desktop. None of the additional 3 daisy chained firewire drives appear on the desktop. The firewire camera does not appear on the desktop.
So I broke the chain into a 15 feet chains, and distributed the chains over 2 external firewire ports. Four devices are on one chain, and two devices are on the other chain. The other firewire device was moved to the 12 port usb hub (this device switches b/w usb/firewire). The camera is off the chain entirely.
The following are the installed extensions on my mac:
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
This is the fix I performed: http://www.index-site.com/firewirebug2.html#RESETPMU
pull the plug on all devices and power mac; waited an entire day to replug
    reset-all = in open firmware
    reset parameter ram
broke up the chain of firewire devices to 15 feet each, on each port
blew any dust particles from the firewire ports
    lastly, reset PMU
the battery is problably less than 2 years old (my mac is 10 to 12 years old; it is my personal computer)
None of the above fixes restored my firewire ports. Therefore, I purchased a firewire card. All firewire devices appear within the finder.app.
I am not able to install YDL. YDL allows me to perform a multiple boot:
    Linux
    MacOSX
    MacOS
    OpenFirmWare
    CD
    NetWork
(for security reasons i do not perform all of these boots)
When YDL attempts to load the ohci1394 driver, it fails. I removed the new firewire card, now I am back to circle one.
I will now try the following solutions:
    combo update
    repair permissions
If this does not work, I will reseat my fireWire card and not install YDL.
Thank you in advance for your assistance, and helpful post on the fireWire conumdrum.

  • Imac G3 had clean install OS 10.1; can't install 9.2; now won't boot at all

    Hello,
I was given an older imac G3--has 176 mg ram; 6 gb hard drive. Due to its small memory and the fact my daughter just wanted it for games, I decided to only install OS 10.1, instead of OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.1.5 which I have on my G4.
Then, I found that most of my CD games (no internet access) need Classic to run. So, upon inserting my OS 9.1 disk to install that, I got the message that the firmware needed to be updated; then an error saying I needed installer 4.5.5.
    Two questions:
    1. How do I get around the fact that my firmware needs to be updated but when I boot from a locked disk, I get the error message that firmware updates can't take place due to locked disk.
    2. Now, I can't get it to boot at all into OS X or any disk in the CD drive--I get a screen with a little script that says, "failed to boot, etc., Apple Firmware 3.0 3f built 12/__98
    then (not exact text)
    0 >boot MAC-PARTS: specified partition invalid, etc.
    can't open ide1, etc.
I hooked it up to my other G3 imac and my G4 via ethernet cable but since there's no system accessible, I can't turn on file sharing/Apple talk, etc.
Hoping I'm not the only night owl going round and round with these kind of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Valerie in Seattle

If you don't mind wiping the hard drive, boot from the 10.1 installer disk and install the 9 drivers:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
Then find out what CD came with the Mac by first identifying it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58669
And then looking at this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If it came with 9, get the original CD that came with it to install Mac OS 9.
If it came with Mac OS 8.6 or earlier, get a retail 9 CD which looks like
    Do a clean install using
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58176 as a guide once you have the correct 9 disk.
Then install the firmware update that corresponds to your Mac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And then I would not even bother with 10.1.5 anymore and get 10.2. Repairing issues with 10.1.5 is difficult. 10.2 installer disks which work on that machine once the firmware is updated look like

  • NEED HELP: Deleted windows from bootcamp but comp. won't boot into mac OS!!

    Here is my problem -
I tried to install windows with bootcamp and couldn't get it to work because I had no valid product key for windows. So I deleted the windows partition to remove it from my mac. However, when I boot up the computer it goes to a black screen and tries to boot from a cd instead of just booting directly into leopard.
If I hold down the option key when I turn on the computer it bypasses that black screen and allows me to select the hard drive for leopard - then everything works as normal.
So my question is - how can I stop my laptop from trying to load from the cd and just boot directly into leopard when I turn on the computer like it used to.
    Please help me - thank.

  • IMac won't boot into OSX or XP after power surge.

I was using my computer in XP, and out of the sudden, there was a power surge. The computer turned off, and I tried to turn it back on again, and I heard the "chime" noise that you get when you start up, and then a gray screen. Even if I try to press the option key, nothing happens. any help?

Oh, I don't know how old. That might be the problem.
Also, recently, the computer won't turn on normally (gray screen) after a normal shut down, so I have to unplug everything and wait for a little while before it works again.
Additionally, the computer won't turn the display off after the pre-determined time like it used to. What gives?

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

The laptop now won't boot to windows...
Sequence of events - investigating issue inside laptop, (CMOS battery creating strong bad smell).  The CMOS battery, HDD, and palm rest were all not installed.
The laptop was turned on in this state.
Some error or message screens came up.
As I tried to fix, I first realized and replaced the CMOS battery, then later the HDD, and later the palm rest.
At some point, with the CMOS battery in or out, and HDD either in or out, the laptop said it needed a correct system date.  I went into BIOS and just selected 3/27/2015, and left the time with whatever it was showing.
This resulted in allowing the boot to progress to the screen stating that it could not start up, and asking to run in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good configuration, or normally.
I tried safe mode, last known good, and normally.  All of them resulted in the windows logo and loading bar (XP), and then it showed an error screen for a fraction of a second... and looped back to the boot sequence leading back to asking whether to try safe mode, safe with network, last known good, normal.
Then, later I installed the palmrest, in case that was related.
Still, the boot efforts all resulted in the same thing... an extremely briefly-displayed error page (too brief to read anything), and then instantly booting back to the safemode/last known, normal, etc option screen.
I canged the graphics to the integrated graphics, just to try... no change in result.
What is needed to allowing it to boot fully and normally?
Thank you very much for any help

...means that Windows can't grok the boot device.  Things to try:
    1.  When the PC is booting, press F8 to get a boot menu for Windows.  Do you have a "last known good config" option?  Try it.
    2.  Do you have a Windows retail disk, or a friend who has one?  Boot on it and do a repair.
    3.  Open the BIOS.  Can you find a setting for hard drive controller mode, IDE or AHCI?  What does it say?  Try switching to the other mode.
<<Any benefit of trying to reformat the HDD and reinstal an OS from scratch?>>
Yes, of course.  It will fix the problem, as long as you're sure that the hardware is sound.  But that's not guaranteed.  Hot plugging a drive to a booting computer is not good practice--you have the potential for ground faults, corruption of the MBR, or whatever.

Yes, this did solve the problem.  But I had some trouble updating QuickTime.  It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory.  I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory.  All seems well now - Thanks!

Sure enough that's not enough to release Norton's tentacles in your system, there's an uninstall tool on their website (a whole set of them actually) that managed to carve it out completely and after a restart everything was back to normal. My machines will definitely be Norton-free from now on ... N

  • Battery died while updating to OS X 10.5.2, Now won't boot!

    Dear all,
Last night I went to update my PowerBook from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, along with a couple of other updates that Software Update had downloaded. Half way through the installation my battery died, and now with the mains plugged in, the computer won't boot at all. I get the initial white screen with they grey apple logo in the middle and a spinning loading icon.
Is there anything I can do to revert it and get it to boot up?
I have a time machine backup from about a week ago, but have some work I did yesterday I would really rather not lose if at all possible!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jude

Lesson learned: never update on battery.
If you can boot your computer with your OS disc, and if you have enough free hard drive space, you can perform an Archive and Install. This way you lose nothing but the 90-180 minutes it will take for the OS to install.
If it won't boot off the CD or you lack the drive space for an archive and install find another Mac user and mount your computer's drive on their computer using FW target disk mode.

  • Yosemite install won't boot into any mode

Really sorry if this has been covered before but I spent a good time searching and couldn't find any existing posts with symptoms to the same extent.
I've got a 2008 iMac 27" and have the latest version of Yosemite installed (10.10.1 I guess). I upgraded to Yosemite probably 2-3 weeks ago and everything has been fine. Then yesterday when I woke it up from sleep it effectively froze - no mouse or keyboard input. So I did a reset by holding down the power button, and when I turned it back on it went to the apple logo boot screen with a progress bar that gets to just below 50% and stuck there. I've restarted quite a few times and left it running up to six hours and still it doesn't boot.
Now this is similar to the issue here - OSX Yosemite won't boot after install on mid 2010 iMac - except I am unable to boot into any mode, and the only startup keys accepted are the P-RAM reset. It won't boot into recovery mode (command+R), safe mode (Shift), startup drive select mode (Option), diagnostics mode (D)... nothing
I've booked into a Genius Bar appointment when the Apple stores reopen after Christmas, but I'm hoping that is a last resort and to be honest I'm unsure what they can do for me except to say it's a lost cause.
Are there any suggestions on what could be happening and why it's ignoring the startup modes? I would have suggested the keyboard not being recognised except the P-RAM command works perfectly, so it's obviously seeing it. I'm a little scared that because it won't let me into a boot device menu (which must operate independent of any HDD) then there's an issue ahead of that in the boot sequence, so possibly the motherboard is shot...
Sorry if I seem a little desperate. I had a HDD crash two years ago to the day (great Christmas present Apple) and it kind of puts a dampener on things.
Happy holidays and I'm grateful for any help that anyone can offer
