XRAID not appearing in RAID admin

I've been having a problem for quite awhile now. Although both my RAID sets will mount properly on the desktop, I can not get then xRAID to appear when trying to add it to the Admin app. I have reset the controllers, and confirmed that the ethernet cables are in place and recognized by router. When trying to add a new RAID, nothing appears in the main boxes, and I am only left with the option of adding by address.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PowerBook G4 boots to unfamiliar login. List of known user accounts does not appear and original admin user name and password is rejected. What is going on here?

There are no children, nor other suspicious characters that have "played" with my computer. One moment I'm in, the next time I turn on/restart the powerbook I'm at a screen with the name of the hard drive and two fields: username and password. Not a list with pictures and names ie 'Katie Jo' with an orange icon and 'Guest' with a silhouette of a head.
In an attempt to remedy this problem, I backed up files using target disk mode and firewire cable. I then, rebooted in single user mode, typed in the correct script and essentially made the computer appear virgin again. Original start up welcome screen display with multiple languages, and then set up prompts such as language, network, and registration. After completing the cues and the "just a few more questions" page, I press continue and am left at a grey standstill, with the continue button greyed out, and no other actions. I'm only able to "go back" by clicking the go back button, all the way to the beginning of the set up, and as I proceed through the steps a second time, I'm greeted with the same halt. What is this?

  • Drives say "not installed" in RAID Admin on lower controller

    hi all,
I'm trying to re-establish connection to an Xserve RAID which has been in storage for some time. I can see all the drives and the RAID array and its data on the upper controller no problem (using RAID admin). However the three drives on the lower controller all show a red status light, and RAID Admin actually says "not installed" for each of the three drives.
Its critical i get access to the data on these drives. Its very unlikely all three drives experienced a complete failure at the same time so don't even show up as inserted into the Xserve - does this sound like a faulty controller?
what can i do to confirm the problem, and does anyone have any suggestions for resolving it wthin the Xserve RAID and/or otherwise getting access to the data?
could I plug another empty drive i know is working into a spare bay on the lower controller and if it doesnt show up as present in RAID Admin assume that the controller is definately faulty?
if the controller is faulty, is there any way of replacing the controller and installing the three discs and getting back access to them?
I'm no Apple expert, any help appreciated.
    nathan

Hello natrat22, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
+if the controller is faulty, is there any way of replacing the controller and installing the three discs and getting back access to them?+
If you want to test the controller the easiest way is to turn the unit off, unplug it, swap the controllers and start it up again. The fan, power and controller units are completely part swappable so that should be pretty easy.
Check the Xserve RAID docs for more information: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/XserveRAID_UserGuide.PDF
The general Xserve RAID area is here: http://www.apple.com/support/xserveraid/
It might also help if you were describe the drive/RAID configuration you're trying to resurrect.

  • Applications do not appear in Wifes Admin account

My Wife and I both have separate admin accounts on my MacPro. One night, I had accidentally Moved the applications folder from the finder into my Trash. I was able to retrieve them, but to do so, I had to create a new applications folder (or OSX did, I dont remember). Regardless, I was able to see them again in my finder.
    However.
Now when my Wife tries to View the applications (she previously had no restrictions, she has full administration capabilities), the Applications folder is Empty, minus an utility folder. To make things more insteresting, the Applcations on her Doc at the bottom of the screen do work.
I am not familiar with Unix at all. I only know the very basics on how to set up an account. The rest is pretty foreign to me. Can anyone help me getting her App folder to see the applications again? Thanks in advanced!

    Sorry to butt in...
"Looking at my account, it shows it as /users/my account name...."
The path should be just /
It sounds as though, in retrieving the trashed Apps folder, you have put it in your 'Home' folder. Just to confirm, from within a Finder window select your Home folder. If it is in there, drag it out and drop it on the Macintosh HD (or whatever else you may have called your HD). You may wish to wait for confirmation from BD Aqua or similar rank as I am only guessing. Admittedly an educated guess...

    Hello,
You may have to manually run the maintenance on the database before the next scheduled automatic activity for the same. The following cmdlet can help you: Remember to substitute your database name
    Get-MailboxStatistics -Database "Database Name" | Where { $_.DisconnectReason -ne $null } | ForEach {Update-StoreMailboxState -Database $_.Database -Identity $_.MailboxGuid -Confirm:$false}

  • Raid Admin Cannot Find XRaid

I have a G4 XServe running 10.4.11 and an XRaid divided into 2 partitions, both raid 5. Recently the second partition disappeared. The problem is that Raid Admin 1.3.3 cannot find the raid. We are part of a large network, where none of the IT people speak Mac. I have found out that the Raid IP is a 169.254.x.x address and our XServe is on a different VLan and Subnet.
Question 1: I have one Cat 5 cable going to the top controller and a fixed IP for the correct VLan and Subnet, how do I change the IP on the XRaid without being able to see it in Raid Admin?
Question 2: Do I need a separate IP and connection to administer the bottom controller.

Hello, Dennis Goff, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
+Question 1: I have one Cat 5 cable going to the top controller and a fixed IP for the correct VLan and Subnet, how do I change the IP on the XRaid without being able to see it in Raid Admin?+
You can't. Without RAID Admin access your only control over the box comes from things like resetting and rebooting from scratch.
Can you clarify what you mean by "correct VLAN and subnet" here? Do you mean 169.254 or correct for your company's infrastructure?
You need a machine on the 169.254. IP range which is self assigned - essentially "no IP". The easiest way to do this is to attach a notebook set to DHCP directly to the RAID and it will self assign 169.254 as well and then the RAID Admin will be able to search and find it. Whatever IP range the ports are on you will need a machine that can speak to that IP range to communicate with it. The 169.254 range is not accessible from regular assigned IP ranges because it is reversed for special use. Note that the RAID Admin software is Java and will run on virtually anything and does not need to be on the Xserve.
+Question 2: Do I need a separate IP and connection to administer the bottom controller.+
No, a single ethernet connection is enough for complete RAID admin. The other ethernet light will be yellow in RAID Admin instead of green but if that doesn't bother you then don't bother.

  • RAID Admin reality check -- this software needs serious work

Folks: This is a combination rant about RAID Admin 1.5 (on OSX 10.3.9) and plea for any suggestions for things I may have missed.
RAID Admin -- an utterly crucial tool for responsibly administering an X Serve RAID, itself offered for use in mission critical applications. But RAID Admin is just one frustration after another.
    1. Can't start due to broken Java or somesuch. As reported by several others elsewhere, and experienced herre, some QT upgrade breaks ability to launch RA. Thee's a "solution" of rolling back QT -- doesn't work. There's a command-line workaround for launching, but if this is really broken Java, how can you trust other functions of RA? Anyhow, we're running it from console of X Server with non-recent-QT.
    2. Finding the RAID Array is totally hit or miss. (And BTW -- don't get hosed by the little feature that it's not sufficient to have the RAID hooked up by fiber... you also have to have the ethernet cables connected). Sometines RA finds the nearby RAIDs by itself, sometimes it finds one of two, sometimes none... figure on entering the IP addresses by hand.
    3. Serious memory leak. Leave RA running for a few hours and it ***** up >100% CPU (on dual G4), huge amount of memory, and is almost completely unresponsive (apparently due to huge disk activity to swap virtual memory). Example: after 12 hours uses 372 Meg of real memory and 1.3 G of VM. Quit and restart fixes the problem... but do you really want to do that in midst of lengthy admin operation?
    4. Array Conditioning: Seems like a great idea -- but how can you tell whether it's doing anything useful? It generates errors to the event window showing bad blocks.... OK great... what do they mean? Is it fixing them? Where is its output? Maybe we could learn that from the docs....
    5. Oh right... no docs. Still stuck on RA 1.2 docs. No mention of Array Conditioning found anywhere in Help, or at apple.com... except to advertise that the feature exists.
    Graham

William, thanks for your response, comments inline below:
I have not personally experienced any of the first 3
issues you note. And I've run RAID Admin on 30-40
different systems, and monitored 100+ RAIDs, over the
    past 3 years.
... it is good to hear a general level of satisfaction...
Are you experiencing this on just one system --
have you ever tried another machine?
What do you mean? We have one X Serve, and one RAID, and that's the one we need to admin. How would we introduce another machine into the scenario?
I'd suggest that your Java installation has
    serious issues.
Why would you suggest that? As I noted, the Java-suspected issue was not on the machine that I reported the rest of the problems on. It simple obliges us not to use RAID Admin remotely (and conveniently) since all the remote machines are up to date with updates including QT.
Also note, it's impossible for RAID Admin to have a
leak. Java has a garbage collector. Therefore, if
    there's a leak, it's a JVM problem, and not a RAID
    Admin problem.
That line of argument would be correct if the leak was due to orphaned objects -- ie: objects no longer refered to and not garbage collected. There's nothing to stop a program in whatever language just consuming more and more memory because the programmer neglected to throw away unneeded objects.
However, since posting, the Array Conditioning operation has completed, and I've noticed that the memory eating behavior has stopped. I've posted a correction on this.
For #4 and #5, I'd suggest reading the Kbase article
which details the updates and what they're good for:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302780
Where on that page are you seeing info that addresses 4 and 5? This is in fact the one page I was refering to: it advertises the feature, but where are the docs?
I'd suggest you figure out what's wrong
    with your Java installation.
No reason to suspect Java on the server, where we are running RAID Admin.
I posted some command-line options which will
give diagnostic output in other threads,
... that could be useful, could you be more specific about where you posted them, and do they cover the result of Array Conditioning?
    Thanks again for your answers,
    Graham

  • Raid Admin 1.5 - Recognize Array button not active

    Hi all,
just updated to RaidAdmin 1.5, updated firmware on both controllers to 1.5 version.
I have 6 disks on which should be my lost array. Suddenly 'Recognize Array' button in utilities is not active.
    Any idea?
    Leos.

    ok. The whole story:
Few month ago, I had RAID 3 schema on 6 disks. I did firmware update on my XRaid. This update WAS SUCCESSFUL. After XRaid restart, I lost my array. I didn't have backup. After unsuccessful local Apple support, I tried 3rd party companies to reascue my data. Noone helped me. I managed help from Apple in US, I sent my disks to them (quite expencive, I am from Czech Republic.). They recovered raid set on my disks to RAID 3 schema on 5 disks only - don't understand this. So I called them back a and I sent disks again, with detailed desription how it must be. Thay sayed OK and sent me back 6 disks, with no raid set schema - 6 unassigned to any array. And as a bonus, one of them was failed. So, now I have 6 disks, Apple claims, that raid schema is on disks (but i cannot see it on my raid - I realy tried everything - swapping possitions, controllers, cables .....). So when Raid Admin 1.5 brings this new function - recognize array, I started thinkink, that I have one more chance to recover my data back. But situation is as I described in first topic....

  • Warning lights on XRAID but RAID Admin won't mount it.

    I have 3 Final Cut edit suites sharing 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs.
I had an audible alarm on one of my RAIDs an amber flashing light by the System Identifier Button.
Edit 2 started up fine and my editor was happily working away. I then went Edit 2 to mount the RAID storage - made up of 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs each split into 2 partitions providing a total of 4 volumes creating my volume based SAN. As I tried to mount the RAIDs using SANmp I had real issues. Eventually got the volumes mounted but then had the greyed out screen of doom when I tried loading up a Final Cut Pro project and had to do a forced shut down.
Edit 2 was still working but I then had similar problems in Edit 1 - not able to mount partitions and unable to load projects.
I tried looking up the RAIDs on the RAID Admin Tool but I'm only seeing 1 RAID when I should be seeing 2. The AID that is mounted is not giving me any errors which makes me think I've lost communication with the RAID with the problem.
Should I just shut the whole system down and hope it starts talking to me again when I fire it up again?
I just want to get on an edit my show.
    Thanks.

William: Thanks for your reply, but you seem to be wide of the target here.
RAID Admin can connect to the RAID,
    but doesn't see drives?
No. I can run RAID Admin on the Xserve or on a separate laptop, and either way RAID Admin can't find any RAIDs to show in the list of available RAIDs. So it doesn't even get to the stage where it can see any individual drives, since it doesn't find the RAID unit in the first place.
The red light you're seeing, as well as the
fact that Disk Utility can see all the drives
    as individuals,
Clarification: Disk Utility is showing symbols for drives, but of course these are really partitions of the RAID, not the individual physical hard drives in the RAID.
indicates that either stuff is set in JBOD mode
... well I'd love to report what mode it's in, but RAID Admin won't show me . However, judging by the fact that there's no part of the file system that's obviously missing, (and also by our original intent when this was set up) I'm 99.9% sure it's in some redundant mode, and 99.8% sure that is simply in default RAID-5 mode.
    or something is seriously wrong...
... depending on the meaning of "seriously"!
I'd guess the RAID set (and any data that
    was on it) is gone.
... though as I noted in original post, it's in everyday use, including by me, and I've not detected any missing data, aside from a handful of files (out of total approx 2 million files) that return read errors.

  • New IR's not appearing in Views for non-admins

We are in pre-production testing for SM 2012 SP1.  We only have a few user roles beside the built in roles.  We have a 'standard' group
which has access to just about everything except for sensitive items relating to user termination, legal, etc.  We have a group which can see those sensitive items, and then we the built in administrators.  <o:p></o:p>
When non-admins create an IR or SR, it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes for the item to show up a custom “all open incidents”
view, or in a custom “my incidents” view.  In a few isolated cases, the work item did not appear for over an hour.  However, admins can see all of these work items immediately in any view that should, by criteria, be displaying it.<o:p></o:p>
What would cause a work item to display immediately in all appropriate views for admins, but not for non-admins?<o:p></o:p>

Sorry for the delay in updating.  Our management team got very frustrated with the performance and nearly killed the whole project.  I got them to give SM another chance with R2, hoping that some of issues would be resolved.  This issue was
    not resolved.
So, I have continued testing.  I cleaned up our Queues, so we only have 4 now in the Queues list.  When I open the properties of the our custom user role, the Queue section displays our 4 queues, plus one called Work Item Group from the System
Work Item Library.  I started with selecting just 1 Incident queue, for this user role.  I created a new IR as this user, and it took nearly 15 minutes for the IR to appear in the view.
I then modified the user role and selected the "All work items can be accessed" radio button.  I created another IR and it appeared in the view immediately.  Now, this is where it gets interesting.   I went back to the user role and set it
back to display a single queue, and the IR disappeared from the view.  It didn't appear again for another 10 minutes.
The queue that is this IR should be assigned to is quite simple.  Right now, I want it to display all incidents.  It is not looking at an advanced class, just incident.  Initially, I did not upt any criteria on it at all.  I then tried
setting it to just Active Incidents, and still the IR's takes 10-15 minutes to appear.
I still don't understand what an aggressive queue is.  Does my queue sound 'aggressive?'  The view is looking at Incident (typical), not advanced.  I don't see any obvious problems in the Workflow Status section of the Admin pane.  What
should I be looking for next?  I need to have the ability to filter queues by user roles, but it will cripple productivity if new IRs do not appear for 10-15 minutes.

  • RAID admin software not fixed by Quicktime 7.12

    Hi
I too have had the RAID admin software not launch recently and all evidence points to recent Quicktime updates as discussed by others.
The latest quicktime update does not resolve this!
So in interests of a workaround I have written a small app which uses a terminal command listed in the thread-
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1553067
This app relies on the fact that the RAID admin file is resident in /Applications/Utilities/Xserve\ RAID\ Update/
If the admin app is not here the launcher will not work!
I have tested this on Panther 10.3.9 Server
Drop me a line at edadams70 at gmail.com to get this launcher

can you share the app with us?
I'm on quicktime 7.1.2 and it ***** cause there is no reinstall for it. Just tomorrow i'm receiving a second 14 disk rack and i'll be damned if i can't configure it.

  • Raid Admin Not Connecting

I've left my comuputer and Xserve Raid running as advised, and went out of town for a week. It has been totally inactive. Today I opened Raid Admin and nothing happens. It doesn't search, there isn't a log etc. I added system and typed in the address, it searches but does not connect. However I am able to use Raid with FCP, and can open and play QT's that are on it as well as open other files. Should I just re-start the computer? It is connected with ethernet cable. Nothing has changed except the fact that I haven't touched anything in a week.

It doesn't have to be a G4 powerbook, it can be any Mac with RAID admin installed. I think the only reason he mentioned a powerbook was that most have their RAID connected in another location of the building and it is easier to access by walking down the hall with a laptop instead of lugging their desktop into the server room. Your current setup should work. Although you shouldn't have to ping the RAID because if you're on the same subnet, Raid Admin should find it automatically. If you have a router or switch or hub, maybe try to connect that between you and the RAID and see if Admin will pick it up. Then proceed to give it a static IP and you should be all set.

  • RAID Admin on laptop OK, but not G5

Been working to set up the RAID connected to a Quad G5. Mounted upper controller OK. Using the second ethernet port, RAID Admin never worked. Tried the laptop and there's the RAID. Managed to set up the array for the second controller. And now I'd like to get Array 2 mounted and have the RAID Admin on the Quad working. Any thoughts? Thanks.
    Cliff

That worked!  A couple of notes for anyone with the same problem:
I thought I'd be clever and create a new account before deleting the old one.  That didn't work, as "Settings" kept insisting that the account had already been created.  I had actually to delete the old account and create a new one from nada.
I was careful to write down all the settings parameters first.  Even so, it took a few tries to get everything spelled right.  Fortunately, "Settings" checked everything carefully and its messages pointed to the right places.
I still got the same error message the first time i relaunched Mail.  However, this time I chose the "OK" option.  Since then and thereafter it seems to be working.
    Thanks for your help, lizdance40.
