Xrandr, dual monitor, openbox - setting the main monitor?

Hello fellow archers,
got some kind of nasty problem here:
I got a notebook (on the right side) and a old monitor (on the left side).
By using the handy xrandr tool I can set up dual monitors (almost) fine:
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --left-of LVDS
That should do the trick, but unfortunatle conky and gmrun than appear on the left-monitor. But I would like to have my notebook screen as the main-screen.
So basically I would like to have what I get with
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --right-of LVDS
just with the minor difference that I can swap screens when I move my mouse over the left-notebook-edge / right-monitor-edge instead of the other way round.
Hope you get what I mean and maybe someone even knows a solution.

err. there has to be a more elegant solution! openbox has excellent support for dualheading now.
the xrandr thingie togehter with kde works like this afaicr:
xrandr --output 1 --right-of 2
leads to :
[ screen 2 ] [screen 1 (main)]
maybe this works with openbox just as well
cheers Barde
EDIT: i'm an idiot ^^ there is an option in the openbox configuration file... it's called placement and it's under
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<openbox_config xmlns="http://openbox.org/3.4/rc">
</snip>
<placement>
<policy>Smart</policy>
<!-- 'Smart' or 'UnderMouse' -->
<center>yes</center>
<!-- whether to place windows in the center of the free area found or
the top left corner -->
<monitor>Any</monitor>
<!-- with Smart placement on a multi-monitor system, try to place new windows
on: 'Any' - any monitor, 'Mouse' - where the mouse is, 'Active' - where
the active window is -->
</placement>
</snip>
</openbox_config>

  • How do I get firefox 4 on Windows 7 to 'remember' to open on monitor 2? It keeps opening on the main monitor, only.

    When you open a program in a multi-monitor set-up and transfer the program to the second monitor and close it, when it next opens it should open on the second monitor. Firefox 3.x performed this way. Firefox 4 does not -- it only opens on the main monitors, always.
    Please build this into the product or provide an option for it?
    Thanks,

    Update: I forgot something about the way BootCamp installs Windows...
    I had temporarily turned off BlueTooth on OS X because I didn't need it, and when you do that, it effectively removes it from the system's list of devices.
    So I just wiped the Windows partition, turned BT back on in OS X, and re-installed Windows. Just to make sure, I went through and manually installed all the drivers by hand and then let the BootCamp utility install them as well, and it's been working like a charm!

  • Can I designate one monitor as the main monitor over the other?

    I have a 24-inch IMac and a second monitor that I also run. However, when I try to play one of my older games, my IMac monitor does not have a low enough resolution setting. My second monitor does, but I cannot get the game to play on the second monitor.
    Is there a way to designate my second monitor as the main monitor so as to use that lower resolution setting (the specific game that I am having a problem with is Starcraft... trying to play it in Windows XP...)????
    Thanks for any suggestions you may offer...

    Open the displays control panel. On the main display you'll get a dialog box which shows a graphic of your two displays showing their orientation to each other. One of the two will have a bar going across the top of it which represents the menu bar. Drag the menu bar to the other display and it will become the main display.

  • Can an external monitor be the main monitor?

    Is there a way to make my external monitor the main monitor, i.e. the one with the menu bar at the top, without just "mirroring" the display?

    Yes. With the external monitor connected (and mirroring off), in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab, where you see the icons of the two displays, drag the menu bar from the current location to the other display. That will move the menu bar and dock to the external display.

  • CS5; Image always opens on last monitor used instead of main monitor

    This problem is back. In CS4, when you opened an image it would always open on your main monitor regardless of which monitor you closed your last image. I have three monitors running and this is really annoying. CS4 was the only version I know of that didn't do this. I wish CS5 didn't do this. Dare I wish they would return to way it works in CS4?

    Opening a new document on the last used monitor is as designed. When the behavior changed to always use the main monitor in CS4, we got a number of requests to return to the old behavior.
    If you have a document open on your main monitor and your secondary monitor and then close the document on the secondary monitor, then a new document will open on the main monitor, so a possible (although not great) work around for you is to have a small "dummy" document open on the main monitor.

  • What is 'fseventsd' when monitoring cpu in the activity monitor?

    what is 'fseventsd' when monitoring cpu in the activity monitor?

    The .fseventsd is the file system events storage location.
    Since it writes file system event log files and since applications such as Time Machine use it, I would not stop its process.

  • EMac Panther - Using external monitor, I want to shut off the main monitor.

    Hello guys and gals. I have an eMac with Panther. I'm using the VGA adapter so I can use a nice LCD TV as my screen. It works great and as you may know, it will only mirror the main screen (both screens show the same thing).
    What I want to do is shut off the eMac Monitor (crt) and only use the external LCD through the VGA Adapter. Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance!

    Try using the Desktop & Screen Saver pane of System Preferences to set a hot corner on the display and using that corner to sleep it. If that doesn't work, it can't be done.

  • Is there a way to have an external monitor dim like the main screen on an iMac?

    i have an apple 24 inch external monitor attached to a 27 inch imac. the main screen dims according to the energy saver settings but the external monitor stays bright. there seem to be no settings in the energy saver pane in system settings to control the dim function, any suggestions?

    could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

  • I use multiple monitors, and Firefox switches monitors by itself several times a day (to the main monitor). How to prevent this?

    I use Firefox 4, but this happened with Firefox 3 as well.
    I have two monitors. I run Firefox maximized on Monitor 2. It switches by itself to Monitor 1 several times a day.
    None of my other programs exhibit this behavior.
    Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thank you!

    I have a similar problem with Firefox 12 (Mac OS X 10.7.3). The main tool bar is on monitor 1 and I want to display browser windows on monitor 2. In previous versions this worked fine. Firefox automatically opened on the last used monitor. Now it will only open on monitor 1, and I have to switch it manually. Other software does not show this behavior. I have tried switching off hardware acceleration, to no avail. Is there anything else I can do?

  • PS docked to additional monitor not opening in main monitor

    Do so hope someone can help.
    I'm running CS5 on an ASUS laptop with Win7 (my desktop system had a motherboard failure) that is docked to a 23" monitor. For some reason, Illustrator and other parts of CS5 Design Standard seem to open just fine on the designated "main screen" but Photoshop does not. It may be that I had not actually *used* those other parts of CS5 on my laptop. Could PS have some some "I'm going to do it this way because I've always done it this way" setting that it won't let go of? I can't just drag it to my main screen (I can but it's uuuugly which defeats the purpose of using the giant monitor).
    Thanks for any help you can offer.
    KC

    I did try that but since this aspect of working in PS is new to me it's possible I did it incorrectly. Had a similar "glitch" today when I decided to alter my preferences to fit my previous settings on the old system. I thought my system was hung up when instead it was just a matter of the preferences dialog box hanging out on the laptop monitor. After realizing what was up, I changed the setting I wanted and closed the dialog box. Next time I opened it, it opened on the main screen. Go figure.
    Well, one easy fix that is fine with me - I just set everything to run on the 23" monitor only rather than having both in use. I don't really need (that I know of) to be able to extend the monitors. I was trying to and thinking it might come in handy. Down the line I may find that it does but right now I'll stick with what works best for my way of working and limited neurotransmitter. In addition, by limiting my work area to the one monitor, my tablet area is used for the entire screen area of the larger monitor. Much easier for me keep track of the cursor.
    Heck gettin' old.
    Thanks much.

  • [SOLVED]Setting the default monitor in Gnome3

    I have an external monitor connected to my laptop and I want it to be the default screen (to contain the panel, notifications etc.). I've solved this by adding the command:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --primary
    to the gnome startup applications. This works but I'm curious is there some other, more elegant way of solving this, maybe through X server configuration or something??
    Thanks in advance.

    in the gnome display settings, you can drag the panel to the monitor of your liking, that setting will stick.

  • How to set the supported monitor resolution in Solaris 11 Express

    I am running Solaris Express 11 under Hyper-V and my monitor is "unknown" as such the maximum resolution is 1152 x 864. How can I manually tell Solaris that I want to use a higher resolution? Which files do I need to modify?
    Thanks,
    Codrut

    By default Solaris detects and then automatically uses whatever it thinks is best. If you disagree you need to create a /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and fill in whatever parameters you think are better. Any parameters not hard-coded will default back to the auto-detected settings.

  • Upgraded 10.5.5 Dual G5 6800 Ultra lost main monitor

    I run Dual head (twin LCDs 1280x1024) on my Dual 2.5GHz G5 with 6800 Ultra
    I just upgraded to 10.5.5 and I lost my primary display, it's not kicking out any signal that my screen can work with. The secondary screen is fine.
    I went to display settings and changed the primary screen to loads of valid settings and nothing works.
    Reset PRAM, still nothing.
    I suspect from reading other posts that 10.5.5 is bollocked on G5s somehow.
    Does anybody have any insight or information about what I can do to fix things?
    I'm not overly happy about trying to drop back to 10.5.4 as I just lost one of my drives and I'm actually trying to restore that at the moment so the prospect of finding a spare 500G drive to clone onto is a bit scary etc.
    Anyway, let me have the suggestions

    Hi Mordatdansant,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    I want to say make a bootable clone first and use Archive and Install as the option on the OS Disk to get back to an earlier OS, but you don't seem very up for that.
    There's another thing you could try to fix your issues but only if you're willing to take an element of risk. I've done this two times to clean up weird problems on my mac but I had backups galore and could take the risk (I'm reckless as heck too). Exactly what problems trying this fix could cause, I don't know. Essentially I would think it was copying over files to replace identical ones. It's I just don't see this posted too often.
    So do you feel lucky..., well, do ya' "Mordat"?, huh?
    If so, download the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update, yeah, the gigantic one, here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1055comboupdate.html
    Once you get it all to your desktop, double click on it and apply the update, again. When I did it I don't recall the installer giving me the usual install options, but if it does do an Archive&Install.
    You'll be asked to restart..., and, when it all starts ups again, ideally, your problems will be gone.
    Best of luck

  • Working on external monitor, dragging files glitches main monitor

    After installing 10.10 on my MBP 17" 2009 most things work all right. I have an 23" Apple HD attached. Every time I drag a file in finder the laptop screen glitches completely. It gets all garbled up. Also the menubar. Doesn't show on screenshot.

    Howdy Paul Kana,
    It sounds like your display is exhibiting some unexpected behaviour after updating to Mac OS X 10.10. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue:
    Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
    If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
    Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
    If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
    You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
    Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
    From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
    Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
    Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling
