XServe in an all-PC environment?

Hi there,
We are a small engineering firm with 20 employees, and have been running a Netware network for years. Due to industry standards (AutoCAD mostly), we need to stick with PC's for our desktops.
I am exploring a migration away from Netware and Novell with our next server upgrade.
The XServer sounds really appealing, and perfect for our needs (file and print sharing, directory, SMTP and webmail, large capacity, expandable) but are there any caveats’ in having an Apple server serving just PCs?
Thanks for any advice!

Seth L-
Greetings and welcome.
Most of the decision comes down to who the IT department is and whether or not they have the training and skills necessary to maintain the server. If they don't do Macs you probably won't win that battle.
If you are going to be the IT department and are familiar with Macs then that is certainly a different story.
The biggest caveat will be that the XServe as currently available is not able to run any PC software. If your AutoCAD stuff can be served from a file server you should be golden. You won't be able to run a PC-centric program that all of your workstations tie into or depend upon for file service. I am not familiar with AutoCAD but perhaps you can contact them for their take on things.
For your needs as listed the XServe will be more than adequate.
Luck-

  • PL/SQL not outputting all fields (environment variable?)

    This must be very straightforward.
    I'm getting back to doing some PL/SQL coding after a break of several years. I'm trying to start with something simple & building on that.
    create or replace procedure change_details(
    dirname in varchar2,
    id_filename in varchar2)
    is
    ids_file utl_file.file_type;
    spool_file utl_file.file_type;
    id_var varchar2(400);
    begin
    ids_file:=utl_file.fopen(dirname, id_filename, 'R');
    spool_file:=utl_file.fopen(dirname,'update_names.lst', 'W');
    loop
    begin
    utl_file.get_line (ids_file, id_var);
    utl_file.put_line (spool_file,id_var);
    exception
    when no_data_found then
    exit;
    end;
    end loop;
    utl_file.fclose(ids_file);
    end;
    spool person_ids
    set serveroutput on size 1000000;
    begin
    change_details('/my_directory/anon_cf','ids.lst');
    end;
    spool off
    I've got this code which should read in values from one file & write out to another. What's happening is that I don't get all input fields in the output file.
    More accurately, if the size of the input file is 2048 bytes then I do get all input fields in the output file.
    If there are less than 2048 bytes on input then I get nothing; if there are more than 2048 then I begin to lose
    some fields.
    There must be some environment setting which is affecting this but I don't know what. (I added "set serveroutput"
    hoping for the best but no difference)
    (It's Oracle9i on Solaris 9)
    Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? Thanks, Chris

    I think what BluShadow is getting at is that you
    have:
    utl_file.fclose(ids_file);in your code, but no
    utl_file.fclose(spool_file);
    Correct. ;)

  • Mac in an all PC environment (revisited) MrHoffman two questions

    Last year, I was in a HUGE battle with our IT people about using my Mac on an all PC network.
    The discussion is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1872433&tstart=0
    MrHoffman and many others made some very interesting points, but the bottom line was...I could not use my Mac.
    Over the summer, IT got around a million bucks of bond money to rework our old and outdated systems.
    We now have a wireless system connected throughout the entire district.
    After it was put into service a few weeks ago, many teachers (NOT ME) received a NEW 17" Dell laptop computer to use with the new service.
    To log onto the wireless service, all you need is the username and password you use with your "Wired" desktop to log onto the wireless system.
    YES, I could not help it, with my built in wireless card in my Mac, I tried to log on. IT WORKED!
    Well, for a short time. When using OS X 10.4.11 I get an airport error.
    Under OS X 10.5.8 I get a message "Unknown certificate" I push OK and boom I am on the web again after almost a year.
    But I really need to be in OS 10.4 because I still use many "Classic" programs.
    Why is it that I can log on with OS 10.5 but not OS 10.4?
    Next question.....
    I asked the IT people if it was OK for me to log on. The Technology Director, Network Engineer
    and Network Manager did not respond, even after several e-mails they simply ignore me.
    However the IT person on campus informed me that just about everyone is able to log onto the system using their username and password. EVEN THE KIDS are logging on with iPhones.
    She said "The kids are using it , so I guess it is OK for you to. So far there have been no security breaches.".
    Should I take this as a yes, or should I send another e-mail to the head of IT for the district?
    Would there be some reason why they continue to ignore me?
    Any advice is GREAT!!!! Obviously, my IT department does not wish to acknowledge that I exist. I suspect that it is because the new system and firewall is safe. Why else would kids be logging on with cell phones.

    I don't see any new details or new changes here that might alter [my position and comments|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1872433] from last year.
    Yes, there's newer WiFi equipment. And a WiFi I'd connect onto only with permission, and then only with a firewall raised and tunneling. (The permission because you're on staff and because you've had previous discussions with IT about network access and were denied, and the use of a firewall and tunnel because this WiFi is wicked untrusted; if the kids are freely connecting their own systems and their own WiFi phones, they're almost certainly also connecting port mapping and network sniffers, too. This is a wicked hostile WiFi environment.)
    Regardless of the WiFi and the rest of the technologies here, this is (still) something you're going to have to sort out with IT and with the local administration, and with yourself and with your own tolerance for risk and your own personal and career goals.
    As foilpan comments, this clearly isn't about Mac OS X Server. It isn't really about technology at all.

  • Can to setup Xserve to process all Mac requests for our AD enviornment...

    I want to setup one of our XServe to be the directory controller for all of our Mac clients, which the XServe would then pass on to our AD server. Would also like that server to allow searching of Directory Users for iChat, etc. How can I set a system up to basically look like an OD server, but authenticate to our AD server, and also provide directory services to applications like an iChat server?
    This system would NOT be pointed to by any PC's. We currently employ about 1300 users, and have about 200 Macs in the building. They want a seemless portal for the Macs in AD. Suggestions, tips, etc? Currently running 10.5.4 on all of our XServes.

  • Calling all Logic environment masters can U help?

    Hi are there any Logic environment masters out there if so I pose this to you I am using an E90ES Yamaha synth as my mother keys and I want to make it play a split layer meaning bass in the lower part of the keyboard and piano on the upper part. I then assign a midi channel to each split Zone. No problem there as far as the E90ES is concerned.
    When I select 2 midi trks in Logic and go to record it uses the selected channel and records the whole thing as apposed to 2 separate recordings one the bass an the other the piano. I didn't want to have to mess with the environment in order to achieve this I thought it was a quick straight from the arrange page.
    Can you help me please on this thanx ahead of time

    Hi Teebow,
    You need to set up a simple pair of transformers, in your audio Layer.
    One transformer will feed MIDI channel 1, and one, MIDI channel 2, in your arrange page, for recording.
    First, create a simple Environment Object, and call it whatever you like (key splitter is good). This is so you can send one midi stream ot both Transformers.
    Cable this to the following two Transformers:
    The first Transformer will FILTER all notes BELOW your set parameter, ie whatever note you decide. This is the TOP of the keyboard split. Hook this up to your first Audio Instrument channel. this would be the melody instrument.
    The second transformer will FILTER all notes ABOVE your set parameter, ie whatever note you decide. this is the BOTTOM of the keyboard split.Hook this up to your second Audio Instrument channel. This would be the Bass instrument.
    In the Arrange Page, create your two instruments, and then select the TRANSFORMERS as the Instruments to be active. In other words, you'll see in the Arrange page "Transformer #1, Transformer #2" instead of the actual instruments. This is so you can record through them, and then the VIs just playback the correct notes.
    Cheers

  • Xserves blocking all ports upon reboot [Firewall issue]

    Almost every time I need to shut down/restart my new Intel Xserves, they block all their ports upon reboot and I can't access my SAN or VNC into the servers (every network port/fiber port gets blocked). I found the solution for this is to run:
    -sudo serveradmin stop ipfilter
    -and then reboot and then everything is fine again, strangely.
    -However if I keep the firewall disabled (as a temp fix) my client machines cannot access the internet or LDAP.
    I was just wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this odd glitch and how to stop it from happening. It's not too much of a big deal at the moment since I'm on campus but in the future I will not be and I'd have to travel up here to fix it.
    Is this a problem with OSX Server?
    Message was edited by: evets90

    If this is two systems and involves a disk wipe and install hasn't cured it, then this is usually not the servers, but something else on the network that's common.  Though I don't have a way to explain all of what you're describing, and particularly the effects on the "fiber ports".  This effects the fibre channel (optical) SAN ports?  That's definitely odd.  What happens?  Or do you have fiber-optic network connections?
    How are you testing for blocked ports here?  Using dig and ping and related tools, or using a higher-level application?
    I have seen cases where some firewall process goes nuts and clogs up a server.  But that's not usually both servers.
    Check the server logs for any related details, and see if there are any rogue CPU-bound processes.
    And check the local area network for problems with DNS services, with errors with IP routing, with errors around subnet routing configuration (use unique IP addresses in distinct subnets for both controllers, unless you're using link aggregation), etc.

  • XServe Raid Fault Tolerance

    Hello all,
    I am using an XServe Raid in my Netware environment. I have two Novell 5.1 servers, one is plugged in one half and the other is plugged into the other half of the XServe. It has been working good so far.
    My question is, that I just thought of is if I have problems with it both server may be affected. How can I accomplish fault tolerance with the XServe? is there an easy way to put another Xserve on my network and have it copy the other one on a regular basis?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Sure, you can mirror the halves of the Xserve RAID, or do a scheduled replication. The first will give you availability, the second will be a backup.

  • Mac in a Windows/Dell network environment.

    I work in a nearly exclusively Windows & Dell environment at a company with approximately 10K employees worldwide.
    Our applications as well as our software updates and network drive permissions are all delivered via a centralized service.
    For a variety of reasons, I have begun to argue for using a MacBook Air. My main arguement is that since I both travel and work with Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, the micro size and huge trackpad are a great combo. Apparently, the 320m graphics card is decent enough to support my very seldom use of CAD, and will drive my 30" display.
    That's the Cliffs Notes version of the hardware justification. My software justification involves iPhoto and Finder being great tools to sort images, Office 2011 supporting full-screen, etc.
    MY QUESTIONS:
    1) Anyone with experience using a Mac in a Windows-only tightly-secured network?
    2) Testing my personal Mac on the network, I can right away see that our timesheep SAP application doen't work, and neither does our online booking tool for travel. Would these be failures on the browser side or is it simply because it's a Mac and is identified by different permissions?
    3) Any experience with the little keypads you use to generate a VPN key? Does it work the same with OS X's built-in VPN support than Cisco's stand-alone Windows applications?
    4) How does Microsoft Outlook setup differ between platforms? Anything to watch out for?
    OK, I've marked this as a question, but if you have any info or experience to share setting up a Mac in an all-Windows environment aside from answering the above, please feel free.
    Thanks in advance users or IT folks for your help.
    - Chris H.

    Try to connect by doing the following steps:
    1-in finder > go > connect to server
    2-write SMB://ur-server-IP/
    3-press enter
    4-select the volume
    5-type ur username and password.
    Also I have this problem with G4 (10.4.11) but it happens cuz the Data and time reset to 1970, solve it by change Data and time.

  • Can a Xserve help me?

    Inside my home we (not me, employees) do video editing with FCP. We tape high school football games and practices and create highlight DVD as well as individual DVDs for recruiting. We also film and edit various shows for the Dallas Cowboys like Inside The Huddle.
    Right now we use 3 G5s and are in the market to upgrade. A huge limitation is the ability to render, encode, upload to web, and continue to work at the same time. We'll typically save of the processor intensive stuff until night and start it all since we won't be needing to use the computers.
    Before I invest hours of research into an Xserve I want to make sure I am at least on the right track. I am hoping to be able to use two computers (new Macs) for editing and an Xserve to do all the processor intensive stuff.
    I'm thinking that when each is finished with one project they can send it to Qmaster/Compressor for final rendering and encoding and possible web uploading.
    So I understand this endeavor will require much research, I want to make sure I am at least on the right path.
    Any input would be appreciated.

    Hi Tommy,
    Mr Hoffman is completely correct with his reply, there is no simple answer as it depends a lot on your existing set up and output. If you can give us some more input we might be able to help you out a bit more. Think about the type of video that you are encoding, SD/HD and the largest project size you've hit so far. If it's only ever going to be streamed, if it's going onto DVD/Blu-Ray or if it's for broadcast will make a massive difference to what setup you should look at and the infrastructure behind it.
    BTW with Final Cut Server you could build some nice workflows to render your finished videos even into various formats or sizes. Keep assets available to users, say a nicely rendered video logo that you use before each sequence. Have multiple people edit the same footage at the same time and do offline editing which might be useful to you if you need to do any editing on the move.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutserver/whats-new.html
    That said if time is only a factor in the editing stage and rendering can be still be done over night and currently finishes on your G5's at a time that fits your schedule. You could swap the G5's for Mac Pro's and reuse them to render your videos to save some more money.
    All the best
    Beatle

  • Moving a template or input schedule from one environment to another in MS

    Hi team,
    Can anyone let me know how does any template or input schedule is moved from one environment to another in MS version?
    Please give me steps.. Appreciate your great help....
    Thanks,
    Chandrakanth.K

    Hi Chandrakanth,
    if you want only the template the easiest is just copy the xlt file from the same folder from one server to the other.
    If you want to copy all the environment (even data) you can use backup and restore from the server manager (appset\server backup save the zip file on the destination environment and restore it).
    From the BPC MS 7.5 SP06 and 10.0 SP01 even the SAP Enhanced Change and Transport System (CTS+) is enabled, for this please see http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/25924

  • Cluster environment with Deployment Plan losing variable values

    Hi all,
    Our environment uses Weblogic Server 10.2, with 2 Managed Servers in Cluster, in Feisty Fawn Ubuntu.
    Our app has a bunch of variables configured in the web.xml with custom values, most of which are endpoint and JDBC related. Our web.xml has some default values in these variables, and we created a Deployment Plan to change these values in deployment-time.
    The problem is that, after a random amount of time, the cluster is "losing" these configurations. At first, everything goes fine, but then, we start receiving errors because the endpoint being used is not the Deployment Plan's anymore, but the one from web.xml. It's completely random, and come and go without notice.
    Is there a known bug about this? Is this a configuration issue?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Francisco

    Are you redeploying the applications at all?

  • Xserve RAID

    Is there a way to admin a new Xserve RAID from my Lion Xserve? I have many 1TB drives I would like to share through AFP on the Lion Server with an Xserve RAID connected to the Xserve via Fibre Channel. Is this still possible?

    I just moved my Xserve raid from an old Xserve to an Intel Xserve running lion.  However one side of my raid is not showing up.  Checked all hardware/firmware, when I plug it back into the old Xserve running Tiger all my volumes show up.

  • Multiversions in Materialized View Replication Environment

    Dear friends
    In my company we have a matarialized view environment where A materialized view, in snapshot site, contains a complete or partial copy of a target master - master site.
    This environment is in Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition and now we are increasing it. We are shrinking our budget and then i'm research an solution more cheaper, i found Oracle 10G Database Standard Edition One, an solution desinged for small to medium environments. My thought is to use Oracle 10G SE1 for news snapshot sites.
    Can someone talk about the user of differents versions (8i mastersite X 10G snapshotsite) in a Materialized View Replication Environment, is it possible? must i upgrade all my environment replication for 10G or to use multiversions ?
    Thanks !!

    10g to 8i can work, assuming
    - 8i = 8.1.7
    - You are applying at least the 8.1.7.4 patchset to the master (8i) or you are applying the latest patchset to the slave (10g). Realistically, you probably want to do both.
    If you are talking about using the standard edition, I assume that you are only doing basic replication, not multi-master replication. I also assume you are aware of the limitations on hardware that come with Standard Edition 1-- I don't recall if you are limited to machines that have a capacity for 2 or 4 CPU's. Also, be aware that Oracle considers multi-core CPU's as multiple CPU's.

  • Bpel deployment fails for all processes that have revision other than 1.0.

    Using: Release *10.1.3.3.1*
    Hello All,
    Bpel deployment fails for all processes that have revision other than *1.0*.
    We have been attempting to deploy several BPEL projects via ANT script to a target environment and are encountering failures to deploy for every project which isn’t a (revision 1.0). We are getting the following error whenever we try to deploy a process with a revision other than 1.0:

    The structure of our automated deployment script is as follows:
    First, a batch script calls (Jdeveloper_BPEL_Prompt.bat) in order to set all necessary environment variables i.e. ORACLE_HOME, BPEL_HOME, ANT_HOME, etc for ant.
    Next, the script lists every .jar file within the directory to an .ini file called BPEL_List.ini. Furthermore, BPEL_DIR, ADMIN_USER and ADMIN_PSWD variables are set and initialized respectively to:
    -     “.” – point to directory where script is running from because all the BPEL processes are located here
    -     “oc4jadmin”
    -     “*********” (whatever the password for out environment is)
    We’ve developed a method to have the script prompt the user to select the target environment to deploy to. Once the user selects the appropriate environment, the script goes through the BPEL_List.ini files and a loop tells it that for every BPEL process listed:
    DO ant
    -Dprocess.name=%%b
    -Drev= !Rev!
    -Dpath=%BPEL_DIR%
    -Ddomain=default
    -Dadmin.user=%ADMIN_USER%
    -Dadmin.password=%ADMIN_PWD%
    -Dhttp.hostname=%HOST%
    -Dhttp.port=%PORT%
    -Dverbose=true
    (What’s happening is that the variables in the batch file are being passed on to the ANT script where *%%b* is the process name, !rev! is revision #, and so on…)
    The loop goes through each line in the BPEL_List.ini and tokenizes the BPEL process into 3 parts *(%%a, %%b, and %%c)* but we only extract 2 parts: *%%b* (process name) and *%%c* which becomes !Rev! (revision number).
    Example:
    Sample BPEL process:
    bpel_ThisIsProcess1_1.0.jar
    bpel_ThisIsProcess2_SOAv2.19.0.001B.jar
    After tokenizing:
    %%a     %%b     %%c
    bpel     ThisIsProcess1     1.0.jar
    bpel     ThisIsProcess2     SOAv2.19.0.001B.jar
    *!Rev!* and not *%%c* because *%%c* will return whatever the revision number is + the “.jar” file extension as illustrated above. So to circumvent this, we parse *%%c* so that the last 4 characters are stripped. Such is done like this:
    set RevN=%%c
    set RevN=!RevN:~0,-4!
    Hence, the usage of !Rev!.
    Below is a screenshot post of the ANT build.xml that goes with our script:

    SUMMARY OF ISSUE AT HAND:
    ~ Every bpel process w/ 1.0 revision deploys with no problems
    ~ At first I would get an invalid character error most likely due to the “!” preceding “Rev”, but then I decided to set rev=”false” in the build.xml file. That didn’t work quite well. In another attempt, I decided to leave the –Drev= attribute within the batch script blank. That still led to 1.0s going through. My next thought was deploying something other than a 1.0, such as 1.2 or 2.0 and that’s when I realized that if it wasn’t a 1.0, it refused to go through.
    QUESTIONS:
    1.     IS THERE A WAY TO HAVE ANT LOOK INTO THE BPEL PROCESS AND PULL THE REVISION ID?
    2.     WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG? ARE WE MISSING ANYTHING?
    3.     DID WE GO TOO FAR? MEANING, IS THERE A MUCH EASIER WAY WE OVERLOOKED/FORGOT/OR DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT EXISTS?

    Only thing i can think of is instead of using a MAC ACL , u cud jus use the default class
    Policy Map Test
    class class-default
    police 56000 8000 exceed-action drop
    Class Map match-any class-default (id 0)
    Match any
    You would be saving a MAC-ACL ;-).

  • Oracle 11g upgrade prerequisite fails for all the values

    Hi,
    We have planned Oracle upgrade from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.2. We have
    followed the upgrade guide Database Upgrade Guide "Upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2): UNIX". Our OS versionis HP-UX ia64 B.11.31. According to the upgrade guide we have set all the environment vairables. And started the Oracle 11.2.0.2 software installation prerequisite with the command " ./RUNINSTALLER -check " The result of the prerequisite check was giving the all the parameters are failed. But the parameters like Physical memory, orasid user also showing failed eventhough we are having 16 GB of physical memory & we logged on
    with orasid it self and all the parameters are showing failed.
    We have check the Oracle metalink note#169706.1,  According to the note we have valid version of HP-UX 11.31 and some patches are already installed and some of them are not installed. But the prerequisite check showing all the patches are in failed state irrespective of some installed patches.

    Sreekanth
