Yet Another Airport Update 2007-1 problem

Hey Guys,
Just ran that pesky Airport Update last night on my MBPro, and now I can't join ANY wireless networks. Every time I try, I'm given the "Error Joining Network" response.
I was online just fine until that point, and the other 4 computers in the house (a g4 iBook and 3 PCs) are connecting perfectly. I've restarted, reset the SMC, said a few curse words, etc.
Is my best option just to archive and install, and skip the 2007-1 update? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi,
If you haven't already tried it, you can also try the fix @ macfixit.com. Some people have had success with it.
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070201002456498
Though, when I tried this with my Intel Mini it didn't seem to work. After attempting several times, I finally gave up, backed up all my files on a USB drive, and reinstalled OS X clean. Luckly, I just bought the mini a few weeks ago and didn't have much on it...other than 20+ Gigs of music, and some videos. It seemed to work, though I would avoid it if at all possible (obviously!).
As an aside, I've had to reinstall XP on my windows machines several times, and "switched" so I wouldn't have to deal with that anymore.
I disabled this update on my MacBook Pro!
Hope this helps.

  • Airport connection, Keychain access after Airport Update 2007-003 & 10.4.9

Not sure what to do here.
I installed the Airport Update 2007-003 and the 10.4.9 update simultaneously. After restarting my computer it would connect to my home (WEP) wireless network but would disconnect suddenly.
I had a suspicion it was the Keychain. I tried to open Keychain access, and it just crashed immediately and every time thereafter.
I turned of WEP and connected to the network just fine.
Any ideas? Is there any way to reinstall Keychain access while retaining the keychain?
    Many thanks in advance!

I just repaired the permissions on my Powerbook G4 (which does correctly connect to the router) and found that the same permissions required fixing. Here's the repaired permissions report:

  • 802.1x Auth Error After Installing AirPort Update 2007-002 and 10.4.9

After installing the AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002 (and 10.4.9, but I doubt that update did it), I am unable to log into my campus's wireless network. I get the message "802.1x Authentication has failed. (Error: 1001 on port en1)"
I've double-checked the settings, and all looks good. Other Macs are able to log in fine but they do not have this update applied.
Other wireless connections from this computer work fine, including using another SSID on this wireless network using WPA/TKIP. Only the 802.1x auth is failing.
I'm a systems admin for the college, and I can see in the radius logs that an error is generated:
"Unexpected error. Possible error in server or client configuration."
I'm the only one getting this error. Anyone have any ideas about this?
    Thanks in advance.

I finally discovered what was going on. When doing either the 10.4.9 update or the Airport update, my /System/Library/Keychains/X509Anchors file was either corrupted or completely emptied. The file did remain with 0K size.
I started noticing that all SSL connections from the computer were failing (Safari, iChat, whatever) that depended on the Mac OS X components to do the SSL validation. (Firefox continued to work fine, as it has its own SSL stack.) I then ran the Keychain file check in Keychain, which alerted me to the exact file problem.
My wife also has a MacBook with the same version of Mac OS X, so I was able to copy her X509Anchors file to my computer and everything worked perfectly after that. SSL came back, iChat works, Safari works with SSL, and 802.1x works again.
    Hope that helps someone else...

  • Airport Update and New Problems

Every since I exposed my rock stable mac to the last airport update and system update, I have had some connectivity problems with my airport. I cannot get Back To My Mac to work. I can't print off of my USB connected to the airport. I went into Airport set up and the airport does not recognize the printer. I tried to get on my desktop mac in the other room, and can't log on. I can't see my wife's computer sitting across from me. Should I be looking at a different problem, or is this a up-date conundrum?

I'm still experiencing these problems with the 7.4.2 firmware upgrade. I think there may be a problem with the computer's Airport card, not with the base station. Perhaps the 7.4.2 firmware has nothing to do with it. Maybe it's a problem with an OS X update. Sometimes, inexplicably the internet will go offline for a few minutes. During this time not only my network (coming WiFi from my Airport Extreme Base Station) but also all of my neighbor's networks suddenly disappear. A few minutes later everything returns to normal. Also during this time my ISP remains online; there is no problem with the ISP. The MacBook is the only device that seems to "think" that all internet networks are down. Another big tip off is during this time the Airport utility fails to recognize my base station at all. It doesn't even see it... period. If this were an ISP problem the Base Station would still appear as visible to the AirPort Utility.

  • MBP intermittant (broken) wireless with WEP after airport update 2007-003

First, my 24" imac works just fine with the current settings. My MBP hasn't connected to a WEP protected network since the 2007-003 airport update (or maybe 10.4.9, I installed it at the same time).
Checking the console while it's trying to connect:

    over and over again until:

The airport icon is turning on while this is happening, then reads the SSID, then disconnects, over and over again.
The keychain was broken after the last update and so was ssh (again!). Those are fixed. But this wireless issue really is a problem for me. The latests updates with 10.4.10 didn't do anything to help out.
Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks!

Reinstalling OS X from the install DVDs restored wireless connectivity. Then installing software updates didn't seem to break the wireless, or all of the dictionary entries.

  • I am often away from my computer for weeks at a time, digging at archaeology sites, before I return to clean, sort, and catalog my finds. And every time I launch my browser of choice, I have to sit through yet another Firefox update.

Sometime's it's a major update, like Firefox 3.6 for instance, but more often than not—too often—it's some stupid little tertiary update that requires Firefox to download, quit, root around on the hard drive, and restart with a whole damn brand-new binary. Why?!
Just once I'd like to sit down, boot up, and get to work instead of wading through this slow, irritating process that the Mozilla developers subject me to.
I've become envious of my friends who run Safari, Apple's home-grown browser, which is updated less frequently. If they want more frequent updates, they download and install WebKit, but can otherwise continue on day after day without interruption in Safari.
I like this model, as it lets busy people like me get more work done, so I am thinking of purchasing a Mac. Really, anything to get me away from the time-wasting wreck of a browser that Firefox has become is a good idea.
The Firefox model crashes and burns its users. Literally, too, when you think about all of its other addling bugs and design flaws that crash the browser and burn countless CPU cycles.
So until I can see the web in a whole new way with Safari on a new Mac, it'll be another day, another Firefox update.
Thanks a lot for nothing, Mozilla.

    Hello Matt, fellow archaeologist :)
Security updates are essential on any and all software, specially your browser. Mozilla is working to streamline the updating process as much as possible, but you shouldn't neglect your own security for a few seconds of "wasted" time.

  • Any Help For Yet Another HDCP For Playback/Netflix Problem?

I have a very complex set-up and had no problem streaming until the other night and I have tried every single solution I can find online under the sun so that is why I am posting here.
I have a Pioneer Receiver that I used a Terk Smart HDMI 3 x 1 Selector with and was able to stream Netflix with no problem.
This is how everything used to be set up:
    Pioneer Receiver
    Blu-ray IN
    HDMI OUT Terk
    DVD IN
    Panasonic DVD Recorder OUT
    OUT
    Panasonic LCD TV HDMI 1
    Terk HDMI 3 x 1 Selector
    OUT
    Pioneer Receiver Bluray IN
    Panasonic Bluray Player
    Input 1
    AppleTV (3rd Gen.)
    Input 2
    Mac Mini (2010)
    Input 3
Now here's the rub:  I also have a PS3.  I used to unplug either the ATV or Mini whenever I wanted to use it and I got tired of switching out so I bought a Monoprice 8 x 1 HDMI Selector.  The logic here being that I would have more than enough HDMI inputs to plug in everything.
When I first hooked up the Monoprice, I hooked the OUT from it into the Bluray IN on the Pioneer and then hooked all of the HDMI cables from all of the various electronics into the INputs on it.  Tested all of them to see that it autoselected whatever I had chosen and even was able to stream on NF.
This is how I have everything hooked up now:
    Monoprice 8 x 1
    OUT
    Pioneer Receiver Bluray IN
    ATV
    Input 1
    Panasonic Bluray Player
    Input 2
    PS3
    Input 3
    Mac Mini
    Input 4
    Panasonic DVD Recorder*
    Input 5
*Bluray IN  and OUT are the only HDMI slots in use on the Pioneer Receiver using this hookup.
Now all of a sudden yesterday I went to stream NF via the ATV and I got that "This content requires HDCP for playback" error.
I did everything I could think of and also tried all of the suggestions I could find on the web.  I had already switched out the HDMI cables as I had bought new ones when I got the Monoprice.  So I hooked the Terk back up thinking it would "fix" things.  No dice.  I put the old HDMI cables back on.  No dice.  I have it hooked up now with the old HDMI cables and still no dice.  I unplugged everything and let it sit thinking I could force a new HDMI handshake.  NF started streaming for 5 seconds and froze -- and then the error message.
I also have a Scientific Atlanta DVR that the ATV is plugged into that the HDMI 2 of the Panasonic TV is connected via HDMI.  The Panasonic TV isn't "old" as I think I got it in late 2009 or late 2010, as it has more than enough HDMI inputs, component, and also a PC connection -- in case someone wanted to suggest the TV wasn't capable of handling the hookups. The ATV is running the latest version of the software.
This is really frustrating since it worked with no problem from the day I got the ATV and now after upgrading the switcher to get more HDMI inputs, everything went kaput.
And I just don't know what to do.
I'm not sure if having everything being dependent upon the Panasonic TV being powered on is affecting things, but it never affected things when I was using the 3 x 1 HDMI switch.  When I wanted to use the ATV, I'd press the Bluray input on the Pioneer receiver, hit the ATV remote and it would come on.  Click into NF and voila: streaming with no problems.
Currently, I still do the same thing -- and I can listen to the radio, stream in iTunes Match on the ATV.  It's just the NF issue that's really beyond me.  The only thing I can think of to try is to maybe put the DVR in the surge protector slot so that it has to be powered on so that everything else will power up instead of the TV?
I'm hoping someone has a suggestion that involves something other than restarting/restoring the ATV, or unplugging things for 30 seconds because I have tried everything I've come across.  I just don't know what to do but I really would like to be able to use NF on the ATV because I like the fact that it plays in Dolby, and I really don't want to have to go back to the PS3 to utilize that feature.
In the meantime, I guess I will switch the DVR on the surge protector with the TV and see what happens if I change the way things power up in the chain.

I am at a loss.  I thought I had a micro USB cord but since I didn't, I wasn't able to downgrade the software.
I did a complete restore for kicks.
    This is the current setup
    ATV HDMI
    Panasonic TV HMDI 2
    ATV optical output
    Pioneer Receiver
Again, all of the other devices run through the 8 x 1 switch box which is NOT powered on to use the ATV.
I get the HDCP error whenever I try to access the following:
    Netflix
    Trailers
    Vimeo
    WSJ Live
HHL and the other sports channels
    These work fine:
    Radio
    iTunes Match
    Podcasts
    Flickr
TV Shows and Movies because I tested both watching previews and they streamed perfectly
I've changed the settings on the ATV until I'm blue in the face and this is what they are currently:
    Dolby - Auto
    Audio Output - Auto
    HDMI Output - Auto
TV Resolution - 1080p HD - 60Hz -- and yes I've had it set on both "Auto" and 720p HD - 60Hz and neither stopped the error once it started happening
All of the equipment is HDCP compliant as I checked
The cable between the TV and ATV
    The 8 x 1 switch box
Panasonic TV specs -- it is HDCP compliant as I said in my 3rd post (according to the manual)
The Pioneer Receiver (for good measure)
I have no idea of what to do other than to hope that Apple does something with the next update to restore everything, as this HDCP issue is really beyond annoying and it's clear 5.2 broke something.  In the meantime, I really am open to suggestions to try something else other than smashing the ATV with a hammer

  • Another airport connecting to internet problem! Please help!

Hi, I'm having a problem connecting to the internet on my iMac G5 running OS 10.5.8.
It initially started happening on and off after I upgraded from 10.4, now it happens all the time.
Airport connects to the network (full 5 bars and I can see the other machines on the network), but can't connect to the internet. When I run Network Diagnostics, I only get as far as Select Airport network, but it keeps scanning forever but doesn't find the network. Meanwhile my iBook G4 and a PowerMac on the same network connect no problem.
I get the Self Assigned IP address message in network preferences.
I have searched the forums for this problem, and found lots of other people having the same problem, but none of the suggested fixes have worked. The only thing I can't do is reboot the modem as it's my landlords network and I don't have access to it.
    Things I have tried include:
    -turning airport on and off
-deleting the airport preferences plist file from system preferences and rebooting
-deleting airport from network preferences and adding it again
-deleting all locations and creating a new one
-using manual dhcp and putting in an ip address same as the ibook with 1 extra number at the end
    -turning of the firewall
    -rebooting rebooting rebooting
None of the above works. Can anyone can suggest any thing else? It's driving me crazy! I know there are lots of other posts on this topic but I think I tried all of the fixes suggested without any success.
    Thanks

There is a fair chance it's a problem with the DNS settings your ISP uses. Here is what I'd recommend.
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
    11. Try out your iMac and report what happened.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Yet Another "User Did not respond" problem

After reading through the many discussions about this problem, I didn't find anyone that is in my exact same boat, so I need to ask.
I, like others, am having the "USER did not respond" problem. However I used to connect to my girlfriend on her iBook with no problems from my iMac. Recently my parents got a new iMac and I couldn't connect to them and now I can 't connect to my girlfriend either! Keep getting the "USER did not respond" error every time! The only thing that has changed since the last time I successfully video chatted with my girlfriend was a the OS X update....
Oh yeah, here's where its gets weirder: I can connect to the Apple Test accounts with no problem.
This is really ******* me off! Please help.

Have you tried connecting to a known user that has no issues? That will help determine where the problems lies.
You can find willing testers listed here: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html
Also, posting more about your set-up will also help (Mac model, Cable/DSL modem type, router, etc)
Lastly, a fresh restart may help, power down all of your components, including your cable/dsl modem/router and start them up in this order: Cable/Dsl Modem (Wait a min or two) router, then your macs.

  • My iPhone 4s is stuck in recovery mode after yet another failed update.

I had freed space, obviously not enough. I cannot understand why Apple could halt not the or prevent the update process if space is lacking, instead of turning the phone into a recovery mode brick. It gave the message that update failed, and went into recovery mode. Most times I update this happens. Usually I manage to get it to reset, and restore from an iTunes backup. Not this time. iTunes can see no phone. Off/on and home together do not reset.
I needed to get iOs 6.1.1 and lastly the most recent update. Given my bad experience of updates, I avoid them if I can.

Someone help, Is there something that can knock it out of Recovery Mode? It's possible with other phones, say Android phones to remove the battery, and also to update with problems every single time.
I'm changing phones. This has to be the forth time. Most other times iTunes found that the phone was in recovery mode and could return me to some default setting.

  • Yet Another "Can't Send Emal" problem

I have been reading about all these Mail.app sending problems, but I haven't found a solution. But I have discovered a few detail which may hint at what's causing this (I hope).
Like others, this problem started suddenly a couple of days ago. However, at first, it was intermittant. Sometimes I could send, sometimes I couldn't. Now it is constant.
I have tried the solutions offered on that long thread on this topic, but nothing has worked so far. I have my own domain hosted by Fortune City and have a bunch of email addresses for my family (eg: [email protected], [email protected]; [email protected], [email protected], etc.). My wife and sons are all on PCs on my home network (wireless airport extreme) and they aren't having any sending problems. My daughter has an older mac running 10.3.9, but she can send mail fine. My father, who lives a few suburbs away, also uses my domain for email; he uses an iMac running 10.4.9 and his email works, too. It seems to be just my email. I set up my email address on my daughter's computer, and it won't send. But I can send email using her account. I also have a .mac account and that email I can send with no problems.
I don't usually use Entourage, but I set up my account on that and tried to send, but no go. Then I went to the advanced options and click the check box for "SMTP server requires authentication" and then selected the radio button "Use same setting as receiving mail server", and now I can send mail with my account using Entourage.
    Here is the error message:
"The server response was: 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied: You must check for new mail before sending mail.
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure what long thread are you talking about, but messy threads where everybody and his/her mother post saying “I have the same problem”, making wrong assumptions and without properly describing their own problem or even reading what the problem described in the original post really was, are the worst place to look for a solution. I personally steer clear of such threads and completely ignore them.
    > "The server response was: 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied:
You must check for new mail before sending mail.
This would indicate that the outgoing server uses a form of authentication known as “POP before SMTP” or “SMTP after POP”:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POPbeforeSMTP
The way to set up that outgoing server in Mail would be setting Authentication to None in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, and either telling Mail to regularly check for new mail in Preferences > General (e.g. every 5 or 15 minutes), or manually checking for new mail before sending.
Not sure why does your .Mac address appear in the error message of what appears to be a non-.Mac outgoing server, though...

  • Yet another airport & 10.5 issue, low single strength

ok, i am upgrading my macs to 10.5, since i use a wireless network at home, i need to be able to rely on it.
two days ago, i installed 10.5 into my G4 1gig PB. I was at my desk, 7 feet from the Airport Extreme base station and the airport single strength indicator went from full bars to 2 (assuming the little dot at the bottom counts as one). in older OS, i could check single strength in the network settings preferences...i can't seem to do it in 10.5.
i then thought it was my home network, but today, i had the same problem at an office network using a lynsk (sp) router. the connection worked, but i would from time to time lose the 2nd bar leaving me the dot only. in the past, i have been able to get 4 bars from the same spot.
i have no DNS serve set ups to my knowledge. Any ideas? is this a problem or is it cosmetic only?

i tried again, but this time using the G5 running OSX.4.10. reported as follows:
the first two are the printer and the G5 the third is the G4 PB running 10.5
Client Strength Noise Tx Packets (errors) Rx Packets (errors)
    00:0E:7F:33:3C:5D -55 - -(-) -(-)

    00:30:65:28:C7:E5 -64 -96 2994 (0) 3029 (398) - and errors increasing
the PB has a lot of transmit errors and the rate rises avery minute of operations, the bars still show only 2. the G4 and G5 are 3 feet apart and the G5 has 4 bars.

  • Yet another froyo update issue

OK, so I have had my phone plugged in and charging since 8:30 am. Since the update my phone won't totally charge...AND the LED light is now flashing red and green. Before when it was plugged in it was red and when it is totally charged it would go green.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

Maybe it is just my device, but I have noticed when the standard battery was in my phone, and plugged up to my PC thru an old BlackBerry USB cord, it never charged, but when I went home and used the charger that came with the phone and put in the extended battery, it charged much faster ...
I remember way back when I had a LG Dare that only the charger that came with the phone would work although I had chargers from other devices that would fit the charging slot.
Again, it may be just my device, but it appears now to only charge with the delivered charger ...

  • Yet another Nexus Update Rumor

This goes along with several of the rumors floating around over the past few weeks. Instead of the Nexus going from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 it will "allegedly" get updated to 4.0.5 sometime in April.

It really is sad how poorly Verizon has handled having Nexus exclusivity.  Now it seems that Verizon has in fact put their own apps onto the phone.  That goes against the point of the Nexus line and against their previous advertisements.  I just wish they would strive to provide the best quality phones to their customers instead of delaying them to ensure they are loaded with crapware that no one wants or uses.
Those of us who are waiting diligently for the phone to be released are the ones people generally come to for phone advice.  While we nerds are a minority, we can easily sway the purchasing power of the masses.
The two "crapware" apps you speak of are not likely to be the cause of the delay, and they can be disabled... While I totally agree with you, that they should NOT be included on a Nexus phone, I doubt that those two simple applications are the reason for the hold-up.
What concerns me more, though, is that if they are taking this long to "tweak/test" the firmware, how much longer will we have to wait than the rest of the world for updates to the base OS when Android 4.2, 4.3, 5.0 and such come out?  Will Google have the ability to release the firmware with the full CDMA code without VZ delaying it for weeks?  (Yes, I know the alternatives to official releases - I'm on Android 2.3.7 on my OG Droid.)
I'm seriously tempted to go GSM.

  • Yet another mirrorlist updater

    Hey hey
i did some bash scripting for learning purposes and wrote a script that updates the pacman mirrorlist. its an improved version of the script in the wiki: Mirrorlist Generator
    with some extra features:
    a clean config file
    logging
    backup/restore the original list
simple syntax check for the new and the current list
maybe someone wants to review or test (backup your mirrorlist!) it? you can find it at GitHub and in the AUR
say something bad or good or both.
    thx, ushi

This seems to have stopped the update indicators. Thanks for that. For amusement value, I tried the update function on PS6 itself. It still indicates the same updates are needed, and of course gives our favorite error:
    Adobe CSXS InfrastructureCS6
    Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
    Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.2 Update

Clearly there is a fundamental flaw somewhere in ADOBE's system.
If Adobe thinks anyone is going to gleefully cough up $600 per year, every year, for the same buggy stuff, you should probably think again.
