Yet another Nexus Update Rumor

This goes along with several of the rumors floating around over the past few weeks. Instead of the Nexus going from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 it will "allegedly" get updated to 4.0.5 sometime in April.

It really is sad how poorly Verizon has handled having Nexus exclusivity.  Now it seems that Verizon has in fact put their own apps onto the phone.  That goes against the point of the Nexus line and against their previous advertisements.  I just wish they would strive to provide the best quality phones to their customers instead of delaying them to ensure they are loaded with crapware that no one wants or uses.
Those of us who are waiting diligently for the phone to be released are the ones people generally come to for phone advice.  While we nerds are a minority, we can easily sway the purchasing power of the masses.
The two "crapware" apps you speak of are not likely to be the cause of the delay, and they can be disabled... While I totally agree with you, that they should NOT be included on a Nexus phone, I doubt that those two simple applications are the reason for the hold-up.
What concerns me more, though, is that if they are taking this long to "tweak/test" the firmware, how much longer will we have to wait than the rest of the world for updates to the base OS when Android 4.2, 4.3, 5.0 and such come out?  Will Google have the ability to release the firmware with the full CDMA code without VZ delaying it for weeks?  (Yes, I know the alternatives to official releases - I'm on Android 2.3.7 on my OG Droid.)
I'm seriously tempted to go GSM.

  • I am often away from my computer for weeks at a time, digging at archaeology sites, before I return to clean, sort, and catalog my finds. And every time I launch my browser of choice, I have to sit through yet another Firefox update.

Sometime's it's a major update, like Firefox 3.6 for instance, but more often than not—too often—it's some stupid little tertiary update that requires Firefox to download, quit, root around on the hard drive, and restart with a whole damn brand-new binary. Why?!
Just once I'd like to sit down, boot up, and get to work instead of wading through this slow, irritating process that the Mozilla developers subject me to.
I've become envious of my friends who run Safari, Apple's home-grown browser, which is updated less frequently. If they want more frequent updates, they download and install WebKit, but can otherwise continue on day after day without interruption in Safari.
I like this model, as it lets busy people like me get more work done, so I am thinking of purchasing a Mac. Really, anything to get me away from the time-wasting wreck of a browser that Firefox has become is a good idea.
The Firefox model crashes and burns its users. Literally, too, when you think about all of its other addling bugs and design flaws that crash the browser and burn countless CPU cycles.
So until I can see the web in a whole new way with Safari on a new Mac, it'll be another day, another Firefox update.
Thanks a lot for nothing, Mozilla.

    Hello Matt, fellow archaeologist :)
Security updates are essential on any and all software, specially your browser. Mozilla is working to streamline the updating process as much as possible, but you shouldn't neglect your own security for a few seconds of "wasted" time.
I hope you do the best for yourself.

  • My iPhone 4s is stuck in recovery mode after yet another failed update.

I had freed space, obviously not enough. I cannot understand why Apple could halt not the or prevent the update process if space is lacking, instead of turning the phone into a recovery mode brick. It gave the message that update failed, and went into recovery mode. Most times I update this happens. Usually I manage to get it to reset, and restore from an iTunes backup. Not this time. iTunes can see no phone. Off/on and home together do not reset.
I needed to get iOs 6.1.1 and lastly the most recent update. Given my bad experience of updates, I avoid them if I can.

Someone help, Is there something that can knock it out of Recovery Mode? It's possible with other phones, say Android phones to remove the battery, and also to update with problems every single time.
I'm changing phones. This has to be the forth time. Most other times iTunes found that the phone was in recovery mode and could return me to some default setting.

  • Yet Another Airport Update 2007-1 problem

    Hey Guys,
Just ran that pesky Airport Update last night on my MBPro, and now I can't join ANY wireless networks. Every time I try, I'm given the "Error Joining Network" response.
I was online just fine until that point, and the other 4 computers in the house (a g4 iBook and 3 PCs) are connecting perfectly. I've restarted, reset the SMC, said a few curse words, etc.
Is my best option just to archive and install, and skip the 2007-1 update? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
If you haven't already tried it, you can also try the fix @ macfixit.com. Some people have had success with it.
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070201002456498
Though, when I tried this with my Intel Mini it didn't seem to work. After attempting several times, I finally gave up, backed up all my files on a USB drive, and reinstalled OS X clean. Luckly, I just bought the mini a few weeks ago and didn't have much on it...other than 20+ Gigs of music, and some videos. It seemed to work, though I would avoid it if at all possible (obviously!).
As an aside, I've had to reinstall XP on my windows machines several times, and "switched" so I wouldn't have to deal with that anymore.
I disabled this update on my MacBook Pro!
    Hope this helps.

  • Yet another froyo update issue

OK, so I have had my phone plugged in and charging since 8:30 am. Since the update my phone won't totally charge...AND the LED light is now flashing red and green. Before when it was plugged in it was red and when it is totally charged it would go green.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

Maybe it is just my device, but I have noticed when the standard battery was in my phone, and plugged up to my PC thru an old BlackBerry USB cord, it never charged, but when I went home and used the charger that came with the phone and put in the extended battery, it charged much faster ...
I remember way back when I had a LG Dare that only the charger that came with the phone would work although I had chargers from other devices that would fit the charging slot.
Again, it may be just my device, but it appears now to only charge with the delivered charger ...

  • Yet another mirrorlist updater

    Hey hey
i did some bash scripting for learning purposes and wrote a script that updates the pacman mirrorlist. its an improved version of the script in the wiki: Mirrorlist Generator
    with some extra features:
    a clean config file
    logging
    backup/restore the original list
simple syntax check for the new and the current list
maybe someone wants to review or test (backup your mirrorlist!) it? you can find it at GitHub and in the AUR
say something bad or good or both.
    thx, ushi

This seems to have stopped the update indicators. Thanks for that. For amusement value, I tried the update function on PS6 itself. It still indicates the same updates are needed, and of course gives our favorite error:
    Adobe CSXS InfrastructureCS6
    Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
    Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.2 Update
    Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
Clearly there is a fundamental flaw somewhere in ADOBE's system.
If Adobe thinks anyone is going to gleefully cough up $600 per year, every year, for the same buggy stuff, you should probably think again.

Thank you wjsten for your soon reply. Unfortunately on these days I'm in a country that Apple don't have any retail store here and for sake of time I prefer to fix it myself to DHL it to the nearest country to use its warranty. Do you have any idea how can I fix it? Do you think it's a software issue?

  • Yet another grey folder thread, help!

Sorry for yet another grey folder thread, but here goes:
Today, earlier, installed Firefox update, along with some addon updates for that program. Quit Firefox and attempt to relaunch, relaunch fails. Reset computer, thinking that will do the trick, I now have grey folder with question mark.
Resolve attempts: reset pram = fail; apple care cd = will not launch/fail; disk utility from original install disks = fail; cannot get repair of disk or permissions to work, continually get error about "failing on exit"; safe mode launch = fail
So, I've done everything, and I've come to conclusion that I am f***, and my HDD is fried (but I hope I am wrong).
    So, dear gurus, my question(s)
    A) Is my HDD salvageable at all? is there some trick to getting the AppleCare cd to work? Anything?!?!
if not, then B) How can I recover my documents/music/pictures? Long story short, there are several things on there that never had a chance to make my back up schedule, and I desperately want to keep them. Any way to make/copy a disk image to save the docs/imgs, or Firewire them to an external hdd? Do I need to consider a professional HDD rescue?

Looks like a mechanical failure, and Apple won't cover the replacement due to a drop it sustained a year or two ago (the power cable was in, and it fell on the connection point, denting that in, Apple states there is a critical board their and that it would be $950 Tier 3 repair which I can't afford). So I'm going to try a Firewire Migration and a few other things and see if that works. If not, oh well. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

  • Yet another MacBook Pro with display issues (NVdia chip)

Exactly one year and 1 week after purchase, my video controller started freaking out. So just 1 week out of warranty, my display started flickering, blinking, showing garbled clumps of pixels and got progressively worse over the last week until, now, it locks up and/or reboots after about 15 minutes of uptime.
    I have:
    - installed all updates, including firmware
    - reset PRAM
    - re-seated RAM
    - replaced RAM
    - used SMC FanControl to try and keep the GPU cool
    - parked the MacBook in front of the fan/air conditioner in an attempt to keep the GPU cool
    - ran the Hardware Test, which returned a faulty video controller
None of the above have had any positive effect whatsover.
I've dug through these forums and hunted around the rest of the net for more info. Every symptom points to the NVidia GeForce issue. It seemed to be heat related. Maybe it was at first (even though max temps were never over 180 F), but after just one more day it doesn't seem to matter anymore. The machine is just FUBAR.
Tomorrow, I'm taking it in to the Apple store for service. Everything I've read here tells me it'll be at $1,000 logic board replacement since I'm a week out of warranty. Needless to say, if I come home tomorrow with a $1,000 receipt AND no laptop I'm going to be pretty upset.
What really concerns me is that, if I have to get the logic board replaced, they'll just put in yet another faulty board with another NVdia chip that will do the same thing all over again. There has to be another option, short of just getting a new iMac or tower with an ATI card instead. What else can I do?

http://noizesurge.com/downloads/gpu2.jpg - incidentally my computer had completely frozen at this point.
I'm pretty sure from observing these types of glitches that this is a hardware fault. I shall ring Apple on Monday and hopefully they can pick it up and sort it all out! Does anyone know roughly how long a turnaround is in the UK?
Yes, your video controller is toast. That's exactly how mine looked.
Just to make certain, run the Hardware Test:
    - Put in DVD 1 that came with your MacBook Pro.
    - Shut down
    - Restart, holding the D key
    - You'll be put into test mode, run the default test (no need to run the robust test at this stage)
I'm betting it will return a message that looks like: "4VDC/1/40000003: videocontroller"
If so, your logic board will have to be replaced.
The Apple Store I went to (Michigan Ave, Chicago) told me it would take 5-7 days. I'm not sure what UK times would be like, but I'd expect a little longer.
    bikemonkey wrote:
Incidentally, people are saying that they've have logic boards and what not replaced only for the problem to reoccur. Does this mean nVidia haven't properly fixed the issue?
Correct. Nvidia hasn't done a thing about this (that I'm aware of), and Apple seems to be putting the same logic boards with the faulty Nvidia chips back in.
Until we see a new/refreshed line of MacBook Pro's, I think we're stuck.

  • Yet Another Soon to be MBP Owner in Need of Guidence

    Hello all,
Believe it or not this is yet another post from a college student in the process of purchasing a new MBP who's appealing to the venerable Apple discussion board community for guidance. My dilemma is not that I can't decide on what MBP I want or what features I need, I've already decided on a top of the line model with the 7200 RPM hard drive and a Crucial ram upgrade, it's that I can't decide when would be the best time to make the purchase given the WWDC keynote on the 7th of August. I would like to get the most bang for my three grand but I need have the computer up and running by the twenty-first with Windows installed to run AutoCad. Would you recommend waiting until the 7th to order the computer and see it the MBP's are updated with the hope an updated MBP would be able to get to me in time or should I buy now with the knowledge that I'll be buying a computer that will be updated, but not outdated, soon?
    Thanks for your time,
    Eric
    PowerBook 12-inch 867

I am also a college student... and I was going to wait for the new merom, but I decided against it... I just think the likelyhood of them released before september is unlikely in my head... but you never know... But I looked at it this way... I wanted a MBP bad, despite all the problems I heard about them (my mbp has no problems to this day).... I figured if I waited for the new releases, the only thing that would change is the fact that it's basically a new computer, and with new computers come with new problems... I also figured, the likelyhood of the computers being released before my school started was slim, so I bought it now. I am very happy with my MBP right now, and you have to think of it this way, there will always be upgrades, whos to say that after the merom has been released, something new will becoming after that... I find it less painful to buy a MBP in july, and have the meroms be released months later, then purchasing it in september, and having them be released a possible weeks later... a little less painful, but that's my input, do what you want, I have a 17" MBP , week 26, and I am a happy camper!

  • Yet another dimension of Yahoo IMAP suckage

Just when I thought I'd had all the frustration I can handle with the terrible integration of IMAP support for Yahoo accounts (and as stated before I really have no idea if the problem resides with AT&T/Yahoo or Palm), I discovered today that there's yet another possible weirdness that can happen -- duplication of the entire inbox.  What I had happen multiple times is that a new message would come in, and when it went to fetch it, it would also fetch all email again from the last 7 days (the cutoff I have set, because as often as I have problems and have to delete the account, there's no point loading any more than that), such that I had 2 copies of every message.  Then if I manually refresh (sometimes I had to leave the inbox and go back, sometimes not) it would properly remove the duplicates and set the message count correctly again.
Here's the part that has to be a bug on the Pre, well-documented on this forum by now -- every time this happened, even once the message count was back to the proper value, the disk space used for email grew.  So those duplicate messages were being orphaned in /var/luna/data/emails every time, taking away valuable application space made critically important by the failure/extreme delay in addressing the app space limitation issue.
I have no idea if it's done doing this yet.  I just sent a test message and it didn't happen that time.  I have already deleted and re-added the account once and it happened again twice after that, so it's not some weirdness with the account unless it recreated itself again right away.
We really ought to be past this type of issue by now.  IMAP email is not exactly brand new technology, and plenty of folks are having issues with POP as well.  We ought to be reaching a point of maturity in WebOS and the core applications that makes it a solid foundation on which to add features and develop apps for.  But it's just not.  Every new update, while it fixes some things, breaks others, and some of these systemic and long-standing issues have yet to be addressed (again, except for the disk space growth, I don't know for sure that the Pre is doing anything wrong, but that alone is still a huge issue that doesn't seem like it would be hard to pinpoint).  I said from the beginning I was willing to wait for this phone to grow into its potential, and I still am, but I expected more progress by now.
    -- robert
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Just an update.  The loading of duplicate messages appears to have stopped, at least for now, but things are still not working normally.  Some messages are simply missed until I do a manual refresh.  In other words, say I get message A at 1pm.  I can see it in my inbox via webmail, but it's not on the Pre.  Then I get message B at 1:30.  I see it after message A in my inbox in webmail, but on the Pre, I get a notification for B, and see B in my inbox, but A is not there until I do a manual refresh, and at that point the order even on the Pre confirms that A arrived first.  This has happened twice this afternoon, and I can't say as I've every seen that behavior prior to today.  I really am beginning to wonder if email is ever going to work properly on this thing...

It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?

  • Is this yet another problem with 7.5 or is it just me . . .

Upgrade seemed to be fine, at first . . . now I keep getting distortion on songs. It seems to be quite random and just because a song has been distorted when I've listened to it once doesn't mean it will be when I listen to it again! It's driving me insane. Is this yet another bug or have I done something wrong (apart from upgrading to 7.5).

    Hi Emlou,
If you have a Windows based operating system such as XP -
It seems to me that you are suffering what I am having the same problem with - the program takes up to much of your computer's processing usage. If you go into your task manager and watch performance as ITunes runs - you will see how much of the total computer usage it is taking at any given moment - that's why your songs are distorted, slowing, garbled, etc - the usage on mine spikes from 11% - 93% AT ANY GIVEN MINUTE! I have no idea why, but I have found that by going to your "Control Panel" and clicking on Quicktime you can adjust audio output to help. Click the audio tab, click Safe Mode Wavout only (checkbox) / Then adjust the "Rate" to 96kHz / Then adjust the "Size" to 16 bit. Close that and shut down and restart Itunes - it might help a little for you.
Maybe someone out there can help us find out why we are suffering with all the CPU usage trouble and how to adjust that spiking.
    Thanks!
    Paul

  • Yet another No Service iPhone 4, second hand

    Hi all,
Apologies for yet another topic about the No Service issue on the iPhone 4. I bought a secondhand iPhone 4 16GB 2 days ago after having a 3GS 32GB for 18 months with no problems. iPhone 4 was just over a week old when I bought it (warranty date shows when it was first activated), on the O2 UK network like my old one.
All was fine for 2 days, was receiving and making calls and texts etc with no problems. But since late afternoon yesterday the phone has mostly said No Service. It occasionally goes onto O2-UK but with no bars of signal so calls and texts still fail immediately.
I've tried all of the tips I can find online to resolve this, airplane mode on/off, reset network settings, restore from backup, restore as new phone, hard resets. But nothing's working.
I can take out my SIM and put it into my 3GS, in the same location, and get 5 bars of signal, all my texts come through. Then put SIM back into iPhone 4 and straight away, No Service.
I've made a Genius bar appointment for tomorrow afternoon, but I'm wondering what happens regarding the fact that I'm not the person who bought the phone in the first place? Will this be an issue?
Thank you in advance for any advice about this, was so looking forward to having this phone and now, bleh!

I spoke to o2, they checked my SIM is activated and said they don't need a record of my IMEI number. Still saying No Service so will have to see what the "Genius" says tomorrow!
