One of the underlaying problems is that i do not understand what Pulseaudio / OSS are and what they do.
I've installed both, and i have pulseaudio server running.

hook the front panel stuff back up inside your computer...
Open the Realtek Audio Manager..
Click the Audio I/O tab..
just to the right of where it says Analog, there is a little blue dot...
Click it and click to disable front jack detection..
Then click the Front headphone picture on that page (make sure your headphones are plugged in)
make sure headphone is selected..
Do the same for the microphone...
then click the Mixer tab..
scroll along till you see Front Green In and Front Pink In
Make sure they aren't Muted and raise the volume level up..
If you have a microphone plugged into one of the jacks, click the tiny button to the right of the mute button to boost your mic...
Not sure if thats your problem but ..
that control panel is a nightmare...

I am having problems with my front panel audio, rear audio works fine. I have read as many posts as I could find on the subject and still can't get my headphones to work. PC specs in signature. BIOS version is 7.3.
The case provides the following wires.
EAR L
EAR R
RETURN L
RETURN R
MIC IN
MIC VCC
GROUND
I have read the Intel Front Panel I/O Connectivity Design document from http://www.formfactors.org/developer%5Cspecs%5CA2928604.pdf and it doesn't seem like my case connectors follow the HD audio scheme. I connected according to the AC'97 scheme (except that I only have a single ground plug so I placed it in pin 4 of JAUD1). The headphones do not work. I disabled the Azalia/AC'97 BIOS setting to enable AC'97 audio support and neither the headphones nor the rear speakers work. I have checked the Realtek audio console's Audio I/O tab and unchecked the "Disable front panel jack detection" checkbox. The audio console does not show any headphones plugged in with the Azalia/AC'97 BIOD setting enabled or disabled. I think that I have my case wires plugged into JAUD1 incorrectly. Any suggestions? No Sound on nvidia hdmi audio driven display

aplay -D hw:1,9 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Also, go into alsamixer, press F6 to go to the right sound card, and unmute everything by pressing M (OO means on, MM means muted). For me, I have a similar aplay -l, and for some reason, the correct device for me also hw:1,9 (no clue why there's four of them...), and things like pulse just assume it's 1,3. If you use ALSA, it should be easy to set it up in /etc/asound.conf. If you want pulse, you might have to go into /etc/pulse/default.pa and add a line like this in order for the correct card to show up, it worked for me on my GT430:
load-module module-alsa-sink device="hw:1,9" sink_name=digital_output

Now, before everybody yells at me to search before asking, I have searched and I have tried everything to fix this, but I'm stuck as can be. Here's the situation. I'm trying to install the new nvidia drivers, 5336 on kernel 2.6.4. I've tried downloading and untarring the source from kernel.org and symlinking it to /usr/src/linux. I've tried the method using abs and mkpkg. /lib/modules/2.6.4/build does indeed point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.4. I always run the installer with --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.4, though the results are the same if I don't. When it tries to compile the module it says:
ERROR: Unable to determine the NVIDIA kernel module filename. And in the background it says: make: *** [select_makefile] Error 1. The log says the exact same thing and doesn't elaborate. I am, at this point, thoroughly peeved. Any help would be greatly appreciated and the lucky contestant who solves this problem will be showered with imaginary money and virtual cream filled pastries.I just installed the NVIDIA drivers on my fresh install of Arch yesterday and I am also running the 2.6.4 kernel. I looked previous to installing to see if there was any documentation and I didn't see any either so I decided to go ahead and write some!

Yet another failed HDMI to TV failure ?
.....like many others on here my HDMI out to TV suddenly stopped working.. OK 3 days ago..now .. dead as a duck...
Tried everything .... no luck... Eventually got a NO FIX NO FEE guy in .. spent 3.5 hours (yes).. went away totally baffled.. (NO FEE)... What the hell is up with this damned thing... Feel like chucking it out and getting another make...?Hi @advid ,

Yet Another NVIDIA Problem(TM)
Since I updated XFree86 a week or so ago, it just keeps failing to initialise the NVIDIA module. I tried X.Org, which does exactly the same. Looking at the log, everything seems to start up properly with no errors, but suddenly it decides to give up, no reason given.
I have just discovered that if I uninstall, reinstall and modprobe the the NVIDIA drivers, it works! Until I reboot. Then, no matter what I try, it will not work at all! So I have to uninstall, reinstall and modprobe each time I reboot.
Very weird is all I can say.Well, I had done that, but the point was that once I restarted, whether the nvidia modules was loaded by /etc/rc.sysinit or manually with modprobe, it would not work (but modprobe did not report any errors). The /dev/nvidia* devices do not show up.
Seems the problem is with UDev (maybe I needed to configure something for it?). I have switched back to DevFS for now, and it works again (X.Org). I had forgotten when I posted that I had also switched to UDev at the same time...
I still have another slightly related problem. I recently (yesterday) had this idea that maybe I should try get my (hardly ever used) Lucent winmodem working under Linux for the odd times I use dial-up. Drivers were easy to find (http://linmodems.org/). This worked under UDev, but then stopped working when I restarted (grr), the same as NVIDIA, whether they were in MODULES or whether I modprobe'd 'em. I actually got KPPP to dial on /dev/modem and it would have authorised had I bothered to configure PPP daemon first ;-) Didn't work under DevFS either, even though the install script had added a rule in /etc/modprobe.conf to alias /dev/modem which doesn't materialse. The device does appear at /dev/tts/LTM0 but KPPP can't dial on it. -
Yet Another Nvidia Performance Issue (YANPI)
Hi everyone! First post here so excuse if I post this under a wrong category. Also excuse my english.
Straight to the point, I've been using my laptop with Gnome and Compiz Fusion for a while and until not long ago everything was working perfectly smooth and all. I don't know if it is related to an upgrade or what but I didn't change any configuration. The problem itself is that all the 3D rendering is done by the CPU even though Nvidia Performance Level goes to Level 2 (Nvidia 8400M, NV GPU Clock 400 MHz, NV RAM Clock 400 MHz). Glxgears shows a performance of at least 1300 FPS but the processor level goes to 80% (Core 2 duo). I went to System Monitor and I saw that glxgears was eating one of my processors and part of the other.
Here are some facts:
Direct rendering is on (glxinfo | grep direct)
nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentPerfMode -t returns 1 while glxgears is running (2D Mode rendering)

Well, I guess that's the important stuff. Again, this problem started without me touching anything so I would assume it was a pacman upgrade issue. I will appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks in advance.... Compiz has always used up a lot of CPU usage, but that's not an indicator that the graphic card not doing the rendering.
The 60 fps glxgears you see is probably vertical synchronized one and that's why it doesn't eat CPU, but understand this, in complicated graphical application there is a lot of work for the CPU, not just the GPU, and the latter often results bottlenecked by the former. Read a random CPU review/benchmark on the Internet and you'll see how different CPUs result in different frame rate in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky or WoW for example, but in Games like Crysis different CPUs don't affect the framerate, because the game is too heavy on the GPU for the CPU to have influence. It's completely normal for Compiz and X to eat up 50% CPU during effects, it's just the way they are designed to work, and don't search for a problem with your graphic's card. -

hey everyone, great forum btw, i've been trolling about here for awhile but still find myself without a booting e8400 setup. i suppose what i'm after are known working bios settings for a rig such as mine. i've tried various voltage changes and disabling the eist. question: does the 650 chipset on this board support the C1E function? i'd read that you needed to press f4 in your bios to make a hidden menu show up so i could disable but no dice. i used live update to get 2.7 and it acts like it flashed fine but should i try the forum flasher anyways?
i've read alot of places the 650 chips simply aren't compatible w/ 45nm tech. has anyone really got it working? seems like all that say they have really don't give any specifics, others just say you're out of luck. any thoughts? i've got a limited window to return my chip and if i do, can anyone verify the 65nm q6600's to work without the headaches?

Yet another Lightroom 3 Performance thread
I have read other posts on this topic, although I will admit it was not an exhaustive search. So, apologies if this topic has been covered already.
Like many others I noticed a performance hit with Lr3. I also noticed that hit seemed to get worse with every patch, including the latest 3.4 patch. Things like cropping and adjusting sliders finally became so brutally painful I could not get my work done.
What makes this potentially unique is my solution. I went back through my Time Machine backup and restored the Lr3.0 executable file that I originally installed last year. And, although performance is not what it once was, it was WAY better than the later patches.
So what's going on here? What's the point of patching Lr if its going to make the product perform like Nikon Capture? I read somewhere a post that said there is a more sophisticated rendering process, which is great, I'm all for more sophisticated, but frankly, it seems to be counterproductive, especially since I don't see any real obvious benefit to it. The pictures I produced with 3.0 are exactly the same quality as with 3.4. Only I got them done way faster.
So if you get to the point that the newer patches are interfering with your workflow, which of course runs counter to the whole point of Lightroom in the first place, I had reasonably good success going back to the old executable file, which presumably uses the older, but faster and plenty acceptable rendering process.
Any news, observations, and advice will be appreciated.I have a MacPro with a Quad Xeon, 5GB RAM. I boot and run apps from a OCZ Agility 2 SSD with plenty of space.
I was partly motivated to upgrade to the SSD because of the growing performance issues in Lr. My catalogs are stored on the SSD, and I did notice an increase in performance starting Lr and reading files. The problems start when I process images.
When I first started using Lr, I was able to zip through huge sets easily. When processing images in Lr, generally I stick to White Balance adjustments, fills, and cropping. The process at first was excellent. I could do all the adjusting and cropping without any sort of delay loading or changing the image.
My workflow involves importing DNG files produced with DxO Optics Pro. I wonder if embedding the RAW image setting is causing the performance lag I am noticing when working with the images... -
*YET ANOTHER* Prores Gamma Shift Thread
There is a gamma and color shift, rendering Prores4444, 422HQ, 422, LT, and Proxy out of After Effects CC 2014.0.2.
It is apparent when viewing the renders from the Finder, Quicktime, or Premiere Pro CC 2014. I'm on OSX 10.8.3.
I followed these instructions to deal with it, but they didn't help:

I can get the footage to almost perfectly match by applying a gamma adjustment of .97, a blue gamma of 1.02 and green gamma of .98.
When I render to TIFF or JPG, the render matches the AE viewport.
My project's Working Space is set to None. If I set it to REC709, the Prores still have a gamma shift, and so do the JPG exports.
Setting the "Match Legacy Quicktime" checkbox doesn't help either.
The gamma shift doesn't just happen with motion graphics, but with regular footage too.
It also happens when rendering out of Davinci Resolve, which tells me it may be an Apple problem, not an Adobe problem.
This has been a problem with Prores for years.
Is it fixed in OSX 10.9? How about in Yosemite?
Is this just a fact of life for Prores? Should I switch to DNxHD?
If I'm going to use Prores, should I render everything with an Adjustment Layer that cancels out the gamma and color shift?

EricThis isn't really an answer, but FWIW, I love 10-bit 220 DNxHD; I don't render anything out to ProRes anymore unless a client or subcontractor specifically asks for it. DNxHD is still limited to specific resolutions, but if you're working in HD or FHD, it's pretty great.

HDMI Audio issue / Strange aplay -l output
I've yet to get HDMI audio output to work correctly. I've tried the advice to use aplay -l to find my card/device number, but my output seems different from every other one I've seen online. To my knowledge, I have the proprietary NVIDIA drivers installed correctly.

In all the examples I've seen, after the line:
card X: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device Y:
there has been additional data to allow the user to determine which device. I've tried to play audio using aplay through each device and none produce sound output. I have a Windows drive on this computer on which sound works, so it isn't a hardware issue. Anyone know how I can fix this?
Update: After some more research, I've been able to force white noise through with:
sudo speaker-test -Dhw:1,7 -c2
I can also force aplay to play a .wav file. But after multiple go's trying to configure asound.conf, I can't seem to get anything else to play.
Last edited by Mason (2011-12-20 07:36:14)i had the same problem the device you need to use is propably 9 install alsa-utils if you havent and run alsamixer then select the Nvidia device and check if all 4 of them are unmuted (the last three will probably be muted...)
You can unmute them with M after that test the devices again with aplay

Trouble getting HDMI audio working
The problem I am currently facing with arch is that I am having trouble getting nvidia HDMI audio in kde. In gnome 3, it worked out of the box but I removed gnome and installed kde and have very little knowledge on setting up the audio. I have tried the arch wiki but it has not helped much. Any help? The aplay -l looks like this:

Install gstreamer0.10-good-plugins like suggested in that blurb if you already haven't, put in module-device-manager in your pulse config as given, and also build and install veromix from AUR and see what kind of options that program exposes for you.
Edit: and restart after all this, either the computer or PulseAudio.

Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

speaker-test -Dhdmi:NVidia -c 6

FWIW, I even tried changing the HDMI cable, turning the amp on before or after the PC etc. No change.

HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)
I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):

Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:

From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
defaults.ctl.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control

What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ? Can you play the following:
mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?

No HDMI Audio from PNY Nvidia G210 Card - Please Help [SOLVED]

Thanks to some of the posts on the XBMC and Ubuntu hardware forums. I picked up a lot of pointers.
When using this card with XBMC, There is no need at all for an /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf with probe masks etc. and there is no need for a /etc/asound.conf either (if you are going to just use XBMC like me for your HTPC setup)
All you need is ALSA 1.0.23 installed and at least be running kernel 2.6.34. aplay -l should reveal multiple (4) Nvidia devices as shown in my previous text further down this post, this is fine, however only 1 of these Nvidia devices will actually deliver sound to your TV via HDMI.
In XBMC, goto System Settings, Audio Settings, set device to "Custom" and enter only ONE of the following and then try and play a movie or music in XBMC... (My G210 Nvidia soundcard is card 1 as I also have onboard audio at card 0 so bear this in mind when applying this method to your setup e.g if your HDMI soundcard is card 0 then the first thing to try is plughw:0,3)

My PNY G210 card worked using a "Custom" device in XBMC of plughw:1,8
If you are not using XBMC and are using for example a Gnome desktop then you can apparently get sound working by using the text in the code box below in your /etc/asound.conf (this will ensure alsa defaults to the correct card and sub device for hdmi audio) again ensure you are using the correct card number and device number. You can validate this by testing audio as follows from the command line "speaker-test -D plughw:1,8 -r 44100" and simply work your way through the 4 devices until you find the one that works.

Given the amount of testing and reading I have done on this, I wouldn't be surprised if this method works for any G210 Nvidia cards and HDMI audio, as the logic seems sound (if you'll pardon the pun! :-))

Disabling the motheroard onbonard Intel Audio makes no difference and manually compiling and installing the very latest ALSA driver makes no difference.
Has anyone got HDMI audio working on this card under linux?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer as I have now run out of ideas and if I can't get this to work will have to revert back to my old ASUS EN9400GT card which takes s/pdif from the motherboard for audio out to HDMI.
