"You have custom access" on unRAID server and iPhoto

I'm not sure this has been covered, if so, I apologize. I just set up an unRAID (unix based) server (Lime-Technology.com) and it's been working well. I'm connecting via Samba (SMB), which takes a little while to make the initial connection, but then is pretty good. Mostly using it to store media, stream movies, etc. I also am storing my iTunes and iPhoto on the server and have run into some problems. First I've learned that to save energy, unRAID spins down the disks not being used, but for iTunes not to get befuddled, the disk that's storing the music files should be spinning before starting iTunes. I assumed the same with iPhoto, but yesterday I tried to open it and it spent some time examining the file and then said the iPhoto file was corrupt and to restore from a backup. I tried again and iphoto froze. I think the corruption problem may have come from the permissions. I'm noticing that many folders and files I create on the unRAID say "You have custom access" in the get info pane. And indeed, that's what I'm getting with the iPhoto file. Now, I've dragged my originals & modified folders into a new iPhoto library as a precaution, and it too is showing only custom access. But at least for now, I know the photos themselves are intact. I've searched around here for info on it and I'm a little confused. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get back my read/write permissions? Is this an SMB thing, a Unix thing, a server thing? THANKS!!!

I have the same problem with Excel files on an external drive. The drive is attached to my computer which is on a network and another user accesses the external drive. The problem of "custom access" began after our main server went down. I hope someone can come up with a solution so that I can set the permissions. For now the Excel files are all read only.

  • "You have custom access"??? (permissions issue)

Apologies if this has been covered before but I have quite a few folders that say "You have custom access" in the Sharing & Permissions section of the "Get Info" Finder window, not "You can read and write" as I would expect. Some of these really do seem to have unusual permissions, such as an "(unknown user)" entry, but others appear to have identical permissions to those for which Get Info says "You can read and write."
I suspect this is somehow related to some (but not all) of these folders originally being created in OS 10.1 (!!) & now in my Leopard file system courtesy of various Migration Assistant & Setup Assistant transfers spanning several Macs & hard drives since I played around with that ancient OS version.
Can anyone help me understand why this is so & more importantly how I can set these folder's permissions to the default, non-custom ones, which I assume will say "You can read and write" in the Get Info window?

    Francine Schwieder wrote:
This whole issue is very convoluted and confusing, with new bewilderments (at least bewildering to me) turning up every day.
I agree completely! I keep hoping Apple will post some kbase articles or update Mac Help to explain more about the defaults & options, but so far the only things I have found are Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Sharing files on your network, Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Setting file-sharing options, & similar "lightweight" instructions which really don't say much more than I can discover by just poking around on my own.
For myself, I simply gave up, cloned my Leopard install to the disk I had been using for Time Machine, and did an erase and install, then let the migration assistant that pops up as the install finishes copy what it wished how it wished from the cloned system. At least things now look consistent: no more "unknown" files, no ACLs where none should be in my home folder, all new files are saved to the apparent new standard: user francine uid 501, group staff gid 20 (of course yesterday I found out even that isn't as straight-forward as one might think, I'll spare your the details).
Ironically perhaps, my Leopard install was done the same way (using Setup Assistant to copy everything possible from my Tiger clone, which is what I think you mean you used here) & it *did not* cause Spotlight to start indexing the Leopard volume or resolve any of the "unknown user" issues for me. This may have been because I messed around with permissions settings on some of my document files on the Tiger volume long ago when it had an additional standard account (since deleted), so that account's UID or GID could have been attached to a few files.
Just to muddy the waters even more, I've discovered a file (/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist) that contains an array of four essential properties of every account I've ever deleted since installing Tiger: the "UniqueID" (which appears to be the UID), the short & long user names, & the date deleted. This file apparently is created anew each time an account is deleted (except curiously its creation date is exactly one day later than that of the last account deletion) but it clearly includes the info from previous versions.
Annoyingly, the Sharing Only user that I added that (I think) caused Spotlight to start indexing did not have the UID (& thus GID) of the deleted account I mentioned above, so the theory that the old account had something to do with it now looks dubious at best.
The more I study this, the less it makes any sense.

  • Permission problem that won't die: You have custom access

After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard I had so many permissions problems that I backed up all my docs, erased my Macbook Pro hard drive (first time since I bought a Mac in 1985 that I have EVER had to do this), and installed a 100% clean Leopard install (no upgrade from Tiger). I updated everything through Software Update. Then I copied back several folders from my backups.
Permissions problems declined, but only from 100% to 80%.
The problems fall into three categories.
ONE: A folder seems to have normal permissions:
    jimw(Me) Read and Write
    staff Read only
    everyone Read only
but at the top it says "You have custom access." (It should say "You can read and write.") That turns out to mean I can't edit, trash, or even move any of its contents without an Admin password. Copying the file into a virgin folder with correct permissions, then Applying them to enclosed items works sometimes but rarely. An ls command results in lines like this:
    drwxr-xr-x+ 11 jimw staff 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
    0: group:everyone deny delete
TWO: Same as above, but there is no staff entry in the table and "everyone" has "Read & Write" instead of "Read only".
THREE: "everyone" appears twice in the table under Sharing & Permissions.
Other threads suggest that one of these "everyone"s is left over from Tiger, but they have scary suggestions on how to fix the problem (see below).
Yes, I have run "Repair Permissions".
So I logged onto these discussions and discovered that I have company -- LOTS of company. And there are about 1,334,786 different proposed solutions, including some hairy ones with typos (like putting in single quotes where double quotes should be -- in Terminal).
Carefully I tried a couple of these, and have wrestled the problem down to maybe 40% of its original size. And my heart leapt when one solution seemed to work on one of my biggest folders: sudo chmod -R -a# 0 FOLDERNAME.
But trying it on a bunch of other folders only solved the problem for the documents inside, not their intervening enclosing folders. If I create a virgin folder structure I can copy all the docs inside folder by folder, then throw out the bad folders en masse. But that's too much work! And prone to error.
How can I strip a bunch of ORDINARY folders of their inappropriate permissions so I can get on with my life?

I HAVE FOUND GOD AND HE WORKS AT APPLE IN THE APPLECARE TECH SUPPORT DEPARTMENT!
(First, let me apologize to people who find the above offensive on religious grounds... OK, now on to the details.)
I am posting here the steps that a certain support guy (accessed through 800-APL-CARE) stepped me through. The solution is so simple that I am beginning to doubt my sanity. It may not work for everyone, but it seems to have worked for me. I'm leaving this thread "not yet answered" for a couple of days just to be sure, but I can say that MUCH of my problem is definitely different and is apparently 100% gone. I'll follow up later to be sure.
Here are the steps this wonderful fellow stepped me through.
    1.
Make sure things are not REALLY REALLY messed up. Click on your desktop so Finder becomes the active program. Create a new folder. Rename it from "Untitled folder". Throw it in the trash. Empty trash. If all these steps work OK with no demand for an Admin password, then your permissions and Users and Groups and all that are not TOTALLY messed up and you can proceed.
    2. (step by step for the inexperienced)
Open your hard drive icon. Open the Users folder. Find your particular user folder (the one that looks like a house). Click on it ONCE to select it.
    3.
Do a Get Info on your user folder (the house). Under Sharing & Permissions it should say "You have custom access" (which is normal for this folder and certain others, but not normal for an ordinary folder you created, say, on the desktop in step 1).
The little table underneath that should have 3 entries. Mine reads:
    jimw (Me) Read & Write
    wheel Read only
    everyone Read only
As you've guessed, my username is jimw, so of course your username should be there instead of the jimw.
    4.
Click on the little lock in the right-hand corner waaaaay at the bottom of the Get Info window. (You may have to scroll down.) Enter your Admin password and click OK. The lock icon will turn into an unlocked icon.
    5.
A little popup menu somewhat to the left of the unlocked icon will now become active (rather than its previous state of grey). It has a little cog wheel in it, and a teeny triangle indicating it's a popup. Click on it and hold: you should see one or two greyed-out choices in that popup, and one active choice reading "Apply to enclosed items". Choose it.
Step 5 was the one that had messed up my drive on previous occasions, because (I think) it applied hidden things called ACLs to enclosed folders and files. But my support guy assured me that this step was OK and would fix my problem.
    6.
You will probably get a dialog box asking for your Admin password again. Enter it and click.
    7.
Wait. Breathe deeply. A progress bar will start spinning. Depending upon the size of your hard drive, it may take awhile.
    8.
When the process finishes, close the Get Info window.
    9.
GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE! THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!
At least mine is, so far. For you techies, the proof to me that a huge step in the right direction has been taken is that an ls -l command in terminal NO LONGER produces entries like:
    drwxr-xr-x+ 11 jimw staff 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    but instead produces entries like:
    drwxr-xr-x 11 jimw wheel 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
I am uncomfortable in Terminal and I don't really understand permissions and ACLs, but I think the significant differences are: no plus sign after the initial string of permissions, "wheel" instead of "staff", and NO SECOND LINE CONTAINING DENY DELETE.
Apple: Can't you produce a tech note explaining this process?? It's really simple! Even a grown-up could do it! (Apologies if you already have and it was posted a month ago and it's highlighted in flashing red text on the discussions.apple.com website and somehow I missed it...)

  • Finder says "You have unknown access"

Hi! I wonder what "You have unknown access" means in the priviligies section in Finder (when you choose "get info"). I can see this in a, from mac, browsable folder, which is shared from Synology Diskstation 212. Folders within the shared folder is not possible to sync with Synology Cloud Station, that is the reason why I'm asking. Also how can I change this to "You have custom access"? Would love to have an answer! Best Regards/Fredric

Get Info - then click the padlock on the bottom right to unlock. Then set user (me) to Read/Write.

Hello everyone.. I recently bought iPad air and I am trying to connect it to my windows 7 notebook. And so I am trying to install itunes in windows 7. But I keep on getting the error message:

I already did this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx that was given in this thread:

But unfortunately I still get the error message during installation. If I ignore that and continue installation, iTunes is installed and seems to work. But my windows does not recognize my iPad. I read somewhere that iPad driver is in iTunes.
Please help... thank you very much.

I had run the set up file as administrator. I have ony one user account on my laptop. I have seen in the regestry about permission of user. There is full control to the user. I have also tried the solution related to this issue that are available in
    this forum and other.
I have also attache the detail.txt log file here
So i am heartily requesting you guys if you have the solution then please post your solution as soon as possible.
    Thanks in  advance!!!

Looks like this is a permission issue with account you logged in in your operating system or account if any you chooses to run you SQL Server installation . Or for executing setup file try using run as administrator.

After following instructions for three different solutions that did NOT work; I found the solution that did work
on the support site for Syamntec.
Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files.  Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands:  (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
For 64bit machines substitute for first line of bat file:
                        cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\windows resource kits\tools"
Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.
Ladies and Gentlemen; this worked for me and allowed immediate installation of two application packages I had been trying for three months!  (Including ITunes 10.5)

My computer comes up with Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start verify you have sufficient access privileges dont know to resolve it

These are the instructions I posted to another topic with this same issue.
I had this same thing happen on 2 different laptops. I finally called Apple support and they walked me through the repair. Apparently there are compatability issues with Apple software update and Internet Explorer, so if that is your default browser, you will want to download Google Chrome, Firefox or some other web browser and set it as your default. You will still be able to use IE, if you don't uninstall it, but links from e-mail will open in your new default browser, unless you copy and paste the URL into the web address line.
These are the step-by-step instructions that the tech support person walked me through. She said that it is important that you do these steps in this order.
    1. Go to your Control Panel and open Programs and Features.
    2. Find and uninstall iTunes from the list.
    3. Find and uninstall Apple Software Update.
    4. Find Apple Mobile Device Support and REPAIR this file. This is the problem child, so you must repair it first.
    5. After you have repaired it, uninstall it.
    6. If Apple Mobile Device Support is not removed from your program list, restart your computer and go back into the Control Panel and Programs an Features. If the file is still there, repeat Repair and then uninstall. It should now be removed from the list.
    7. Restart your computer.
    8. Go back into your Control Panel and Programs and Features and then find BONJOUR. Uninstall Bonjour.
    9. Find Apple Application Support and uninstall it.
    10. Restart your computer.
    11. Upon restart, you may receive an "AppleSyncNotifier.exe - System Error" if you have iCloud attached to your account. This is normal and will be fixed when you reinstall iTunes.
    12. Using Google Chrome (or Firefox or Safari) go to www.apple.com and click on iTunes and then find the button to download iTunes. It will now install properly and be usable.
    13. If for some reason you are not able/allowed to change your default browser to something other than IE, then you should uncheck the box to automatically update iTunes during the install process or you may end up having to redo this fix.
Hope this helps everyone with this problem. I have now gone through this process with two of my laptops, both of them with successful results. If this does not work, I strongly urge you to contact Apple for additional assistance.

    Hello mjswooosh,
I'm very disheartened to hear that you've had ongoing problems when attempting to order from BestBuy.com. Our goal is ever to provide a fun and efficient shopping environment! Certainly creating aggravation serves neither you nor us and I apologize sincerely for this having been your experience.
We recommend the troubleshooting steps you mentioned (i.e., clearing the browser cache, deleting temporary internet files and cookies) because this is the most common cause of this type of problem. I too have encountered this issue from time to time and these steps have almost always resolved the problem. I say almost always because there's one further step you can try: ensure that you have signed out of BestBuy.com, then perform the browser maintenance steps we've recommended. Afterward, before signing in to BestBuy.com, add your desired items to your cart and sign in as part of the checkout process. When the standard steps have not netted a resolution for me, this has solved the problem each time.
I hope this helps. I'm very grateful that you took the time to write to us with your concerns and for sharing your very valuable feedback about your online experience.
    Sincerely,
    John|Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate

For "Could not open key/write value" errors when reinstalling try b noir's user tip:
    "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\
[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows.
The technique can be applied to the branch of the registry mentioned in the error message.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

I am trying to set up my apple tv using the hospital network. I am able to detect the network and chose it. But the way the system works is that you have to agree to the terms and conditions of using their network before access the internet. How do I accomplish this with apple? Please help.

There are some other options to you, if you're not at home and nobody is using your router you could set it up at the hospital, if this isn't an option you could get a second router and use it.  Many ethernet routers are available on the cheap, and ethernet cables are cheap too.
Also, a macbook can share it's internet via the built in wifi it has.  See this go to settings-sharing-internet sharing and configure as desired.  This may require an internet connection via ethernet.  But you should be able to create a wifi network for using something like airplay/home sharing.
