Zooming in Survey Mode is not sharp

I'm using LR 4.1. When in survey mode, if I select an image and hit Z the resulting 1:1 image is not sharp. If I zoom in or out and back to 1:1 it becomes sharp. This is not a problem in Loupe mode. It's not a delay issue - it never becomes sharp unless I change the zoom level. I have 1:1 and standard previews pre-generated.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Larry

As are as I know, I didn't have 1:1 previews for this image. I know I wasn't in Loupe at 1:1 with this image in this session either. When I first went into Survey mode and zoomed to 1:1 the image was pixelated, but I had the "Loading..." message appear at the bottom. After about 5 seconds the 1:1 preview was built and displayed the sharp image.

  • How to zoom in Survey mode?

Suppose I have 6 photos tiles in "Survey" mode.
How do I do a simultaneous zoom and pan, so zooming in on one photo zooms all the other ones, and dragging one photo drags around in the others?
Zooming in on one photo loses the tiling effect of "Survey" mode, making it impossible to do a side-by-side comparison.
Since the tiles are basically large thumbnails in size, it seems that there is no way to do a zoomed-in comparison in "Survey" mode.

Well, Jay is correct, although you can do something like it...sorta. If you use "Compare" mode instead of Survey, you will initially see two panels showing just the first two images from the ones you wish to "survey". Then you can click (or use slider) to zoom (with synchronization) both the "select" and "candidate" images; and finally-- by use of the arrow keys-- you can see your additional images appear, sequentially, in the "candidate" panel. So you essentially get a zoomed pairwise survey. Not really what you want, but...

  • Zoom in Survey Mode

It would be quite useful to be able to zoom the image reslolution in survey mode the same way we can in compare mode.
This would speed, among other things, the ability to scan a group of images at the same time at 1:1 resolution to eliminate those that are fuzzy.

Still no zoom in survey as of LR3 (unless I missed it - please correct me if I am wrong).  Still think this would be a nice, time-saving feature.

  • Labels in Survey Mode in LR2

I am in Survey Mode (secondary display) and I have three photos displayed.. I choose one of the three as "most selected" and I click on the label icon at the bottom of the photo I like and apply a color label. Instead of it being applied to just the most selected photo it gets applied to all the photos.
Is that the way it was designed to work or am I misunderstanding the process in survey mode?
Not as useful as it would be if it just acted on the photo for the label icon I selected. And of course if you deselect the group they all disappear from the survey screen.
It wouldn't be so bad if there was an overlay with file info in the survey screen so I could easily figure out which photos were the ones I choose.

Okay, I see now that if I change it to survey mode on the main monitor it doesn't apply it to all of them just the selected. Not intuitive but workable.

  • LR5 Fill mode preview in Library module is not sharp

    Hi,
I just discovered, that when in Library module, and viewing my photos in Fill mode, it is not sharp. It is in fact so blurry, that it is unusable. Not sure I remember it correctly, but it happened also during the tethered shooting and viewing image on secondary monitor.
Interesting thing is, that once in a Develop module, Fill mode preview is sharp. I tried different settings re preview in Catalog Settings and Preferences, but no success.
I would like to know, if other users are experiencing anything like that too? Googling I found several such problems described in the past. I wonder, why this apparent bug was not fixed ages ago ...
    Thanks,
    Petr

Hi, so I did so, no change. Now let's not talk about the difference between Develop and Library modules, but about Library module itself. Why all other previews, e.g. 1:4, 1:2, 1:1 are sharp, Fit mode is sharp, but Fill mode is not? Is there any internal difference to how Fill mode works? I insert the photo here for you to see the difference:

  • Survey Mode not working correctly

When I select a number of images to survey and flag one of those images, all images in survey mode are flagged making the culling process extremely difficult.  This only started happening since upgrading to LR 4.2  Any solutions?  Is it a bug?  May have to resort to LR 4.1 until fixed

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  That was driving me nuts.
Just for the record - auto-sync was on, so I switched it off which did the trick, either way, you solved my problem

  • Blurry images when zooming in Survey & Grid View

When I am in Survey View and hit the Z key, some of  the previews are blurry.  The same thing happens in Grid View.  However, in Loupe View, the images are fine when I the 'Z' key.  Using Survey View would make things go faster when making my picks.  Any ideas why this happens?
I tried rendering 1:1 but the returns a mesage that says renders are up to date and rendering was done.

This is definitely a bug. I can see it too, and it's little bit annoying. LR 4.1, Win7 x64.
To reproduce just select two images, render 1:1 previews to be shure they are present.
Then press 'N' to switch to Survey mode, and now press 'Z' to zoom in active photo.
It gets zoomed, but looks like LR zooms in standard (smaller) preview instead of using 1:1 preview - the result is blurry and a little pixelated, it definitely lacks resolution.
But when in the Loupe view (switch view using 'E') and zooming all work just fine - the image is at full resolution and is sharp.
And even if I switch from Survey to Loupe with zoomed in image - it still stays blurry.
To get sharp image I need to zoom out and then zoom in again.
So in short - it looks like 1:1 preview is used only when image is zoomed in from the Loupe view.
At least others seem to experience the same thing so I know it's not just me.  I'd say it's more than a little bit annoying because it causes you to second guess yourself and you constantly have to switch to a view to see if the image is actually sharp or not.  It really slows down the workflow.

  • Survey mode: Advance multiple images keystroke??

    Hi All,
I have requested this feature since Version 1 beta, so I'm hoping that maybe it has showed up in LR v2 and I've missed the conversation here thus far.
Example: I have multiple images opened up in 'Survey' mode, let's say 4 mages. Which on my Apple 23' Cinema Display makes for much nicer size reviewing, than the largest 'Thumbnail' setting.
The basic ability to hit a combo-keystroke, and advance all the frames at once in 'Survey' mode, to the next set of images of that same total. You know, same as 'page up' or 'page down' in the thumbnail view in the Grid.
Now, I know IiView Media Pro could do this several years ago, before Microsoft turned it into 'Expressions Media', with 4 images at a time. And like I said, I've been requesting it since early LR beta 1. You know, just add a 'Shift' to the Page Up/Down function keys. Or 'Option' or "Control' key.
So, have I missed this feature? I've been exploring the keyboard tonight and found that 'Shift and 'Option' will get you variations on multiple or extra images, as they did in LR 1. But you still can't advance them as a group to the next set of , like I said 3,4, 5 or 6 images at a time. I've tried keyboard-adds with the Page Up/Down buttons, but got nothing there either. This is pretty cool on monitors larger than 20" or so.
I love the Survey mode, but surely we can advance a half-dozen images at a time, instead of adding or subtracting one image at a time.
Hoping there's an 'Shortcut' here I've missed. :)
    Thanks
    -Sol

    Hey Wolf,
As I mentioned, I have, at least twice since early 'LR beta 1' asked for this feature. It's crazy that the feature isn't there. As I mentioned, in Expressions Media (going back to iView Media Pro), not only does it allow up to four images to completely fill your screen, regardless of screen size, but they will advance to a new set of images, all at the same time. And it also allows you to zoom up to four images at the same time. As LR does in the 'Compare' mode.
I will re-post this over in the 'Feature Request' section, but like I said, I was hoping it had been added as a keystroke combo in LR 2, and that maybe I had just missed it.
    Thanks for responding.

  • Indoor photos not sharp

When taking indoor photos(i.e.: wedding reception) with EOS50D& EFS 17-55mm f2.8 zoom lens,in manual  or automatic mode, the shots are not clear, not sharp and a little too dark. ISO1600,1/125th shutter and f4.5,auto focus. Can anyone help me? It would seem for a camera of this caliber, shooting in "auto" would be a breeze!!! Exposure level indicator smack in the middle. Thank you.

If you are relying on AUTO to get it right I strongly suspect you don't know what you're doing. Low light & possible subject movement requires a proper understanding of photography & the rules relating to getting a great photo. Auto doesn't do that.
This is harsh. Did you read the OP's post? She/He said he tried it in manual too. The comment about Auto was to suggest that a fully automatic mode is generally reliable for well adjusted images. I see no reason to suggest that he lacks a "proper understanding of photography.." and the rest of the dressing down you offer.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • Reordering images in Survey mode

What are the restrictions on rearraging images in Survey mode? I could not figure out why it would sometines work and sometimes doesn't.
For example, I have a main top directory 2012 and in it a folder for each month. If I am in GRID view at the 2012 level and choose images in Survey mode, I cannot rearrange them. But I am in GRID view in one of the subfolders, then I can.
Is this normal? Am I doing anything wrong?

    Here are some helpful tutorials:

Provided you are working with a Folder of images or a Collection (but not a Smart Collection, All Photographs or Previous Import), you can reorder images in Survey View. To do this, drag and drop an image into the position you want it to appear in the group.

  • PSE11 Export of RAW files not sharp

I am using PS Elements 11 with raw converter 7.3, processing .DNG files from a Samsung GX-10 on a PC.
I notice that, despite sharpening the image in the raw converter, that the preview (F11) in the organiser is not sharp. This is somewhat annoying.
However, even more annoying is the fact that the blurriness continues if I export the DNG from the organiser to a new JPEG, even if I set the quality at Maximum (12). The export and preview seem to be ignoring the sharpness I have set in the raw converter.
If I open the .DNG in the editor and then save the file as a JPEG straight away, all my sharpening remains intact, and the final JPEG is fine.
I have tried using setting the 'process' in the raw converter to '2010', and also tried setting the JPEG preview size to 'Full Size' in the RAW converter save options. Neither of these seems to make any difference.
For my normal workflow I edit the .DNG files using the raw converter, using the PSE editor only when necessary. I then use the organiser to export the .DNG files to JPEGs for printing, emailing or whatever. This workflow does not give me the results I expect any more.
It looks like I am going to have to open every processed RAW image in the editor and then save the files as JPEGs individually. Also the organiser preview does not give me an accurate preview of the quality of the processed file.
Has anyone else observed this, or have any suggestions for a cure or a revised workflow?
    Bill.

    Jon,
Thanks for the response and the tips, but I am happy with the sharpening I am applying in camera raw itself, but the problem occurs when I click the 'Done' button to save the results to the organiser, and then subsequently export to a jpeg.
For an example, this is how an oversharpened test shot appears on the screen in ACR 7.3 at 100% zoom with sharpening set to 150 (via print screen)...
Click Done and then export from the organiser (max quality) and this is the blurry result that appears:
This is also the sort of view I get in the organiser preview (F11) even at 100%.
If instead of clicking Done in ACR, I click Open Image and then save the image as a JPEG, this is what I get:
This latter image is what I would be expecting. (Of course I wouldn't normally sharpen my images like that!) In fact the exported raw images are much softer than the JPEGs that come straight out of the camera.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, and I am quite happy to be corrected, but I have been sharpening my images with ACR in PSE10 quite happily for a year or more. Its only since PSE11 and ACR 7.3 that I have noticed this issue.
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Image not sharp in bridge

I am really frustrated that my images look slightly blurred in bridge.
Looks sharp when I open in photoshop, but whenever I see 100% preview in bridge,
    image is just not sharp!!!
    * I have purged all cache and did a full extraction
    * I have checked full monitor size preview
    * Check with other image viewing softwares, and found no problem when viewed in 100%
    * Waited until bridge loads the image for full view
Is it just me that this happens?

do you have thumbnail quality set to High Quality On Demand? do the images get sharper if you just wait a bit to render? what zoom level do you view the images at? what version of Bridge to you use?
