My Macbook starts up but with a black screen until I shift key and reboot it a few times

I am not very technically at all, I am posting this because I haven't been able to get an appointment with apple for weeks.
I mac book is around 3/4 years old, hardly used, its 17inch and all the software is up to date.
in the last week every time i turn on my laptop the screen goes to black and I have to hit shift and the power button a few times before it works. Once it is on it works perfect. i have never dropped the laptop.
What is wrong and how do i stop this?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a problem I'm having.
About 3 months ago my G10 started booting up with a black screen. I can hear the qosmio logo sound and everything. Just couldnt see anything. So I pushed FN + F5 and this would show the windows xp loading screen. But when it booted into windows. It would be displaying at a very low resolution. So i would have to change it or push the tv out button twice and it would auto reset itself.
I've been into the bios and changed the Display start up to lcd+rgb analog and that will show everything during the booting process but still goes into windows at a low resolution.
And if i plug in an external monitor, they both just go blank.
I've tried full re-intalls, qosmio player re-install. Nvidia driver, hotkey utility, display change. But still nowt.
Anyone had similiar problems? And if so were you able to fix it?Yup, I had this a while back on my G10 and it was the start of more serious problems. The machine started behaving more oddly, and it got worse over time to the extent that it would lock up when watching DVDs and the qosmioplayer software stopped working completely.
I don't know if you've got the same problem, but I got on to the Toshiba techies and the machine ended up going back to them for a complete system board refit. = problem solved.
Oddly enough, a friend of mine had exactly the same problem and went through the same process of returning the machine; i don't know if this is a problem affecting all G10s! -
My grandsons new Apple refurbed 35g ipad keeps locking up with a black screen amd nothing else. I have reset it many times pressing the home and off buttons together but it keeps locking up. Help,please!
Thank you for trying to help. I followed your instructions, it took 6 hours to download, and then said it could not solve the problem (something to do with error 9?). It will have to go back to Apple - its only 3 days since it came out of the package and its very disappointing for him. Looks like I have to hang around in the Apple store in Plymouth all tomorrow until they can fix it, or will change it. Thanks for your help.

I'd test with the original or other correct spec. memory - and/or test with Apple Hardware Test or other memory testing software - like Rember. -
Macbook Pro 2010 Crashes with a black screen when under heavy graphical load.
It loops any sounds that were playing and all keys are unresponsive. Only way to stop is a hard restart. I have already tried repairing permissions both with the Disk Utility under OSX AND with the installer CD. I noticed that this also happens in safe mode. This occurs in applications such as Starcraft II, Microsoft Powerpoint, and Half Life 2. I am a college student and unable to gain acces to an Apple Store so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have boot camp installed (I have read that having boot camp on another partition may cause this problem). Yes the error occurs when under the OSX environment, I have the most up to date software updates. Here is an error code produced after my hard restart (if it helps):

So the problem now is in the question, but just before this problem the initial issue was my computer would start and turn on but the backlight appeared to be on its dimmest setting I could barely make out icons and the last page I viewed. Please help I'm in college and did not back up everything plus I desparately need my microsoft office for these classes! Thank you!!!

Macbook start-up but stays on white screen and then clicking noice
I was working on my macbook and suddenly it just became incredibly slow and then it was non-responsive. So I shut it off, and when I turned it back on, it was just a white screen, with the clicking noice in the bottom right corner and then a question mark symbol came up in the middle of the screen and now I can't access any of my important files that I need, Someone help please!!
If you have another computer and a FireWire cable you can try booting this computer into Target Disk Mode by holding the T key at bootup, and then attach the computer to another one via the FireWire cable. This should allow the second computer to see your computer's drive as an external disk.
Alternatively you can try booting up off the Leopard DVD and see if you can access the drive from the Disk Utility software on the DVD. This will be available in the "Utilities" menu after you select your language. From here you can try running a drive repair and hope you can at least get it to be readable.
Unfortunately beyond this, and without any other drive utility software, there's not much you can do without taking it to a technician who can hopefully remove the drive and read data off of it with special hardware. When drives go bad they tend to just stop working altogether. -
2007 Macbook turns on, but no life (black screen)
Hi,
The fan on my macbook can be heard when it is turned on, but other than that there seems to be no life, the apple light on the lid does not light up, there is no chime sound, and the caps lock key light will not light when pressed. It was working fine when i last used it a week ago & ther has been no damage done to it since then. I've tried resetting the SMU, P-RAM & S-RAM and there is still no response. Any advice would be appreciated!

My Macbook Pro has a black screen when running in Bootcamp Windows 7. Since I updated the mac side my windows side now starts up with completely black screen - no prompt, nothing, Cap keys still light up as does mouse and DVD drive seems to run.
Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick. I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally. I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again. I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time. Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black. I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]

my i pod touch was erased in the find my ipod app this has set my i pod where i cant do a thing but see a black screen with a rotating circle in the middle of the screen. i tryed to restore and itdosent download actual file to the i touch and i cant do a thing with it please help me fix this and if thereis a way with out lossing my data would be great but however it can be done please let me know asap thank u.

My Macbook air charges fine with the Thunderbolt screen connection but only sometimes with the 45 W chargers. It seems to be the combination of the chargers and the computer. I was thinking whether the Thunderbolt screen has a larger power supply which easier activates the computer to actually receive the charge. It reminds me a bit of the Nokia Lumia 800 telephone, which when totally exhausted needs a strong charger to be activated again. I am as frustrated as most others. I have got two chargers, and both of them sometimes work, other times not. Sometimes, they start working after a while. Is Apple meanwhile coming up with a solution or advice how to handle such situation?
I just got my ATD and late 2011 MBP up and running. I've not tried running without the power adapter from the ATD plugged in, but I just tried and didn't have any problems with the display not waking. You may want to take your query to the ATD forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display - perhaps someone there has experienced a similar issue.

Pro won't start. Instead get a black screen and a beeping every 2 seconds. Light at front right corner of keyboard flashes in sequence with beeping.
If it is giving a single beep every two seconds, then it is not seeing any of the memory. You could try taking the back off, remove the memory module and reinsert to see if that corrects the problem. Or just take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs do that for you.

HELP: Bootcamp wont start up anymore.. ( Black screen with flashing cursor)
Today i tried to boot up my Windows VISTA partition with bootcamp and I always end up with a black screen with a flashing cursor. I already tried several times but still no luck..
Strange thing is I can still boot up my Windows Vista partition in Parallels on Mac... But after u reboot and try this with bootcamp again the black screen with the flashing cursor.
I search on the internet for a fixes or solution but no luck, and i don't want to reinstall every thing on my windows partition again..
also tried the cmdalt+PR thing on startup without any luck and i have no clue what this problem is causing.. i only remember installing the last updates for my mac with the new App store feature but don't know if that could cased any problems.. it looks like a firmware problem or something to be honest i really don't know..
Can someone help me? or figure this out? any fix for this?

Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless. If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM. See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.
