Pulse Audio no longer detecting sound card; ALSA still detects

After a recent update, pulseaudio has stopped detecting my sound card. ALSA still detects my soundcard, and I was able to find the following in the verbose output of starting pulseaudio.
D: [pulseaudio] reserve-wrap.c: Successfully acquired reservation lock on device 'Audio0'
I: [pulseaudio] (alsa-lib)utils.c: could not open configuration file /usr/share/alsa/ucm/HDA Intel/HDA Intel.conf
I: [pulseaudio] (alsa-lib)parser.c: error: could not parse configuration for card HDA Intel
I: [pulseaudio] (alsa-lib)main.c: error: failed to import HDA Intel use case configuration -2
I: [pulseaudio] alsa-ucm.c: UCM not available for card HDA Intel
When I check out the ALSA directory mentioned, it turns out to indeed be the case that the entire ucm directory does not exist

I'm not at all familiar with pulseaudio configuration. Does anyone know of a good way for me to resolve this issue? Have I even identified the correct issue?
UPDATE:
I was able to work around my problem for the moment by symlinking the configuration file to the location that pulseaudio was actually looking for it
# mkdir -p /usr/share/alsa/ucm/HDA\ Intel
# ln -s /usr/share/alsa/cards/HDA-Intel.conf /usr/share/alsa/ucm/HDA\ Intel/HDA\ Intel.conf
Although this does get my sound back, it is a hacky work-around and obviously not ideal. Anyone who knows a bit about pulse configuration, I welcome your input here

Thank you so much for posting your solution!
I was having the same problem. The funny part was it started happening (and not always) after KDE says that the Intel HDA device is "gone" and asking me to remove it from my configuration. Even by saying no it wouldn't work. Killing pulseaudio with
pulseaudio -k
would have everything fallback to Alsa but starting pulseaudio again wouldn't work.
Rebooting right away doesn't take care of the issue either but after a while the problem would go away...
Any inputs would be appreaciated!

Some of my apps on both my iPad and iPod Touch no longer have sound.  Others still do.  I checked general settings.  Any other ideas of how to fix this?

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • [solved] Pulseaudio doesn't detect sound card after system update

Before a recent system update I had pulseaudio working flawlessly, but after doing a recent system update with pacman -Syu,
pulseaudio no longer sees my sound card and only displays the Dummy audio device.  Among the packages updated that I can
remember off the top of my head are the Linux keneral, udev, kmod, instead of trying to roll back my system I figured I would try
to fix the issue.  The only thing suggested in the Pulseaudio wiki is that a asound.conf directory is overriding the /etc/asound.conf
file which is not the case on my system.
Looking at the output from lsmod I can see where the kernel modules for the sound card is getting loaded
    snd_hda_intel 23375 0
    snd_hda_codec 89160 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi

  • Doesn't detect sound card

"Setup is unable to detect supported product on your system. Please make sure product is properly installed before running setup.
    Setup Will exit"
Basically I bought an Xtreme gamer and I fitted it into the PCI slot nicely. Then I disabled onboard sound in the BIOS. When the PC loaded up, it didnt detect the new software. So I put the CD in anyway, and it let it load up. When the software installation loaded, it had the option of installing "Sound Blaster X-Fi" and "Creative Media Source". I tried to install them both, it tired to install the "sound blaster x-fi" first, but then as it reached the end, it had the Error message first quoted in the post. Then it installed the media source no problems.
Anyone know why it wont show up? PLEASE HELP ME!

  • New install not detecting sound card

My system is not detecting my sound card after a fresh install although alsa was working OK during installation.
I had the same happen with a Sidux install and this was fixed by a download and re-install of phonon but something else is wrong here.
Here is the lspci. Not sure what else I should post to help.
My other Arch install (kernel 2.26.28) is ok. The problem seems to be with 2.26.29.

  • Skype can't detect sound card

Skype was working just fine previously when making a video call (could hear the other person well - no problems.) Then I stopped using the monitor stereo speakers and installed desktop speakers.
Wasn't happy with them and uninstalled them about a day or two later. When I tried to make a video call again (after choosing monitor speakers again under the pc control panel - sounds and audio devices, also tried to choose monitor stereo speakers in Skype but didn't see this option) - there was no sound - even on the Skype test.
So I tried "check settings" and saw under speaker - "can't detect your sound card". Under adjust speaker settings there's no speaker suggestions at all - it just says none.
I also cancelled the speaker setting on SoundMAX digital integrated audio under the control panel.
I have rebooted the system but still the same problem!

I'v sorted out the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  • [SOLVED] Audio dropouts with USB sound card

Hi! Recently I bought an external USB sound card (Music Fidelity V-DAC). If I plug in the USB cable the sound device is recognized by Phonon in KDE4 (kdemod).
If I play an audio file in Amarok (or VLC) the audio is indeed redirected to the USB sound card and played correctly. However, if I use my USB mouse, or USB keyboard dropouts are occurring in the audio signal. It seems that other USB devices are interfering with my USB sound card.
    More details:
Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.33 and kdemod 4. Phonon backend is Xine. I also tried gstreamer, but this crashes Amarok/

I also tried an Ubuntu (9.10) live CD. Using ALSA or Pulseaudio a clean audio signal without dropouts is produced.

Thanks for your suggestion. I added the following line to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file:
    options snd-usb-audio enable_msi=1
After a reboot the problem still persists. I also tried another suggestion from this forum:
    options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1
This doesn't work either. I tried to change settings in /etc/security/limits.conf, which looks like this:
    @audio - rtprio 99
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 250000
The USB sound card doesn't share a IRQ with another USB devices, as can be seen here:

  • Skype can't detect sound card, issue with playback...

    Hello
I have just received my Razer kraken 7.1 headset and have installed razer synapse 2.0. I have set up my mic and speakers of the headset through the control panel, my playback is set as the razer kraken 7.1 earphone and the mic is set as the headset microphone through the recording tab. When I launch skype there is no sound produce through the application, however with previous headsets there has been, I have tried going on youtube to see if sound comes through the headset and it does. Previously I have been using a turtle beach z11 which used 3.5mm jacks in to the computer however this new headset is usb operated. When skype opens and I try to call someone it says problem with playback device meaning I can't call anyone at all. However when checking call quality it says everything is working fine even though it isn't.
So far I have tried re-installing skype and restarting my pc none of this has worked so far, I know this isn't likely a fault with the headset as it works with all other programmes I have tried.
I am using a custom built pc with
OS: WIN7 64 BIT Home Premium
    GPU: AMD HD7950
    CPU: i5-3550
    RAM: 8gb 1333mhz
    Motherboard: Asus p67 series
    Sound card: Onboard 7.1 audio
Any help with my problems would be much appreciated.
    -Thanks
    George Snell

@gsnell, Please setup your audio device directly in Skype and not only in the windows playback/record interface.
Also, please try to quit synapse 2.0 since it may interfere with Skype.
Also please try with the latest 6.13 version
    www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-windows/downloading/
if nothing helps, Can you please provide logs as described in this link https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12321/how-do-i-create-log-files under Skype for Windows Desktop and attach it to your post?
    Thank you

  • Audio capture (recording) from sound card doesn't work

I have a Asus Xonar DS sound card that uses CMI8788 chip,  AV200 kernel driver and snd-virtuoso kernel module. The card is recognised on installation (i686) and there are no issues with the sound output.
This is a new installation to try to fix the (lack of) recording problem. I know the card can be used to capture sound being played from a web browser, Youtube and internet radio, as I previously had it working with audacity, gnome-recorder and mhwaveedit, but some months ago, after an upgrade it stopped working.
Alsamixer shows the card as AV200 and I have toggled all the capture options and raised levels to no avail.
The card is not broken as the capture works fine on Kubuntu and even Win7. I have tried pasting asound.state from Kubuntu but there was no diference.
Does anybody know a good troubleshooting guide that deals with the capture side, not output.

"volume: can't open /dev/mixer " is for the users who use OSS so there; you should find out what uses OSS and change it if it is possible and not solely on oss.
and the error I am having is because I defined the specific software to hwd:0,0. so what i should do is to check my softwares and set the audio output to "default"
So in another word use you sound card and in output option of your sound card choose "default over hwd:0,0"

  • Wireless audio connection to external sound card

    Hi to all!
I'm using a usb audio interface (Fast track pro) to my Dell Vostro computer. I use this interface to get better sound quality producing music and to use studio speakers, connect eventually some synth, record samples...nothing too much serious. End of introduction, go to my problem.
I'm trying to connect the sound card to my computer without cables using the HP wireless audio. I would like to know what output rate has de S/PDIF connection. Also, as I understand, if I connect the HP wireless audio using this connection, the device is not doing any Digital to Analog transformation, right? I want a pure digital input in my sound card! I must say I have tried the connection (Computer - USB transmiter -> HP wireless audio s/PDIF out - Soun card s/PDIF input)and it didn't work. I need to sync both devices. Can you help me doing that? I know maybe it's not a typical connection, if you think a better way to do it (or think is madness) just let me know!
Many thanks! Also must say I'm not an expert user, so excuse me if I say something wrong.

    Hi again,
I just found a link on M-Audio's website (forum) that says the Fast Track Pro does not support sleep mode, and that I should set my computer to never go to sleep. *****, a little, but I guess it's not a huge deal. And, ultimately, what matters is the sound quality that I get. And, that is quite good!
In the meantime, your point about an external power supply (besides the USB power) is interesting, and a really good point. I wonder if I powered the interface with the optional external power supply, would that alleviate the problem (since the power to the M-Audio box would be continuous). I may, one day, order the optional power supply and check it out. In the meantime, I will simply set my computer to never go to sleep.
I do have a question in this regard, though: Is "going to sleep" the same issue as "screensaver". I ask this because I've figured out how to set the screensaver to "never", but I don't see anything about "sleep" mode. Is this the same thing? If not, how do I access the "sleep mode" settings?
    Thanks again!
    Vic

  • AUDIO QUESTION: Running external sound card plus internal sound a once

    Hello,
I have a question about the possibility of operating an external sound card (Line 6 tone port UX1) and operating internal audio at the same time. In system preferences, it just lets me have one or the other.
Is there a workaround or program that would allow me to do this.
It is necessary because I need a cueing output and a master output for djing with my m-audio xsession pro.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks,
    Lynx

Hp Pavilion g6 is suddenly unable to detect sound card

Error 303 means you need to replace the hdd. If you are in warranty HP will send a replacement. If you are not in warranty you can use a retail SATA laptop hdd. Install the new drive, boot with Recovery Disks to restore the laptop to factory setup.

  • Sound card not being detected by alsa

I compiled a kernel using the /usr/src method as per the wiki page. However, I've been having some problems with ALSA. I compiled in ALSA and support for my card (I think I did at least) as modules. alsaconf finds my card fine, but alsamixer dies with this message:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
I tried using strace on it:
    open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/lib/libncursesw.so.5", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/lib/libasound.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libm.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libdl.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libpthread.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
    open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
    Process 28188 detached
However, /dev/snd/controlC0 exists, even though the output of the above would lead me to believe differently.
What else is weird is, mplayer and xmms can play sounds just fine, but Firefox and aplay cannot.
More information about my setup is available from the output of an ALSA info script, here: http://pastebin.ca/591136 and http://pastebin.ca/590970
Any idea what's going on? This is very strange. Thanks.

  • Pulse audio doesn't see any card

I've changed my desktop to gnome 3 from kde, previously having xfce installed.
While having very hard issues to make sound works in KDE, i decided to switch from alsa to oss
and that had made a trick.
After switching to gnome shell, pulse devchooser and console tools says - there is no card detected,
altough skype-oss is working well, I can hear it sounds. Firefox and flash are silent.
Do I have to reenable Alsa (I dont want cause skype doesn't work without oss on my desktop)?
Can you please help make my sound working on gnome3?

There are two wires that attach to the AirPort Extreme Card; one for Wi-Fi and the other for Bluetooth. Be sure to double-check both for a solid connection AND to make sure that you don't accidentally have the wires crossed.

  • [SOLVED] knotify4 is locking sound card (ALSA only & ICE1724)

Just today 7/8/11 I did a pacman -Syu after using reflector to get the latest/fastest mirrors. After the KDE upgrade, everything is working correctly again.
When my system boots up, I hear the standard startup sound after logging into KDE. If I try to use "speaker-test" or upon trying to play in MPD or anything else I get a
"ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy"
error. I thought the default device was getting confused (as per the wiki page on ALSA), so I blacklisted the HDA Intel to be rid of the HDMI on my ATI video card. The onboard sound is disabled in the BIOS. I do not want to use the onboard sound as the Beyerdynamic headphones I have cannot be driven effectively by the onboard Realtek. So, in other words, I am not using surround sound of any sort, just simple stereo. When I do "aplay -l" the only device listed is the Terratec card, so it should work. I have tried various custom .asoundrc files and the suggestions in the Configuration and Troubleshooting sections in the Wiki.
What I don't understand is why the KDE system sounds work on login and logout. I have not been able to find topics that relate to this exact problem. I have deleted my .asoundrc and cleared the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf file as the ALSA instructions claim they should work with most systems.

Upon futher investigation, apparently knotify4 is tying up my card for some reason, which makes sense as my KDE system sounds work. I believe a recent upgrade to something caused this, but I am not positive which one as it's been a couple weeks since I even used the sound. I know that dmix is supposed to be automatic now and should not require further configuration in a ~/.asoundrc file. I am still stumped - the suggestions I tried from searches were from earlier ALSA versions and thus far havn't worked. I need an ALSA expert!
