Quick Tip: How to create editable form fields | Acrobat X Tips & Tricks | Adobe TV

A short tip that details how to create editable form fields using Acrobat X Std. or Pro.
http://adobe.ly/wzXkmL

I have created a form which will be filled out by customers and sent back to me via 'submit' button. What I am trying to figure out is when we receive the filled out form, is there any way to have it as a pdf. To clarify, when the form is filled out and sent, the receiver opens the email and attached is a non-editable pdf. This way the customers information is no longer editable.

  • How to create new form fields in several columns (spreadsheet) and have them named consecutively?

Hopefully someone can help.  I created a new form from an Excel spreadsheet, but the form field recognition didn't "take" well and very little of the spreadsheet translated into form fields.  I need to create new fields (31) for each column (about 10) and I want the fields in each column to have a keyword from the parent column and the fields numbered consecutively.  I'm really hoping I don't have to do this manually!
Next, is there a way to total the values in a column of fields (the same as the SUM function in Excel?) or does the form user have to dig out a calculator and add everything?
Can I create an email (submit) button and direct how (ie email) and by what method the form is sent?
Once the form is completed, is there a way for the user to lock it before sending it - ie a button they could press to make it no longer fillable?  Or can I set the document to be a regular .pdf once it leaves the host machine?
I think that's it!  Hopefully someone can help soon - this is a work project that could be potentially very time consuming if I have to create each form field manually.  Thank you for any assistance!
    Cheers,

Rats!  Thank you for your link - I may take you up on that... however for the purposes of this form I'm more than halfway done, so I might as well keep plugging away.  A workaround I found was to creat 32 of something I only need 31 of, then delete the parent.  Somehow even playing with spacing on the "create multiple fields" option as the fields are being created only gets the vertical alignment close - no matter what I do I still end up manually aligning (vertically) 31 little boxes for each column so they fit visually.  Grrrr.
Yes, this can be very tricky. If you don't get the exact right offset between each field, the difference will accumulate and after a while it will be completely off.
You just have to play around with it, until you get it right. Or almost right, and then adjust it manually.
Another thing I've noticed, is that when you select one field and right click for properties, you get an expanded version, as opposed to select/shift/enter for a bunch of cells only yields an abbreviated properties box - what's up with that?  Is there a way to change this?  For instance, I had set the properties for a column of 31 cells to be number, 1 decimal place.  Halfway through my project, the lady I am doing the favor for tells me she would like 2 decimal places, requiring me to manually change each box for 62 cells!  Apparently cell formatting is not an option in the abreviated properties dialogue!  Is there a fix for that?
No, there isn't. Some propeties you have to set manually (or get right the first time, before copying and pasting...). There is a way to do it with a script, but it's a bit complex and requires using an undocumented method.
This next question is a bit more complicated, and may not be possible.  The form I am creating is for payroll purposes, so at the moment it is generic (31 days) and the user fills in the month manually. Is it possible to get the form to recognize a month value (or create a pulldown menu with a selection of months to choose from) and limit the days accordingly?  Or better yet, run a calendar function so that weekends and stat holidays are highlighted on the affected row?  Kind of like what you can do with an Excel spreadsheet, which is what I designed the form in at the start (then printed to .pdf - the form field recognition did NOT work well on my spreadsheet!  hence me doing every cell manually).  Is this even possible, and if so, is it something I could learn to do?
Yeah, it's possible, but requires quite a bit of scripting knowledge. If you wish, contact me personally (by PM or email at try6767 at gmail dot com) and I could possibly create this for you.
If you want to do it yourself, you would have to learn a lot about both the Date object in JS and about the various date printing and scanning methods in Acrobat JS.

  • Can you create editable forms in Acrobat X Standard?

    Hi everyone,
Hopefully an easy question although I cannot find a definitive answer on the product page.
I need to be able to create editable forms that others can fill in and print or save using Reader 8, 9 or X. Can these forms be created using Adobe Acrobat X Standard? The forms have been created in Word 2007 but we want to disribute them as PDF's and allow certain fields to be filled in on the PDF. The form will be downloaded from a website, filled in and emailed back.
Any clarification on this is greatly received.
    Thanks...

I know you can create forms with Standard but I don't think you can enable them so that Reader users can save them without the Pro version.

Even if you could do this, you would want to carefully consider whether you want a form out there for everyone to fill out and send in. There is a restriction to the amount of times you can receive data from an enabled form. After 500 times, you would be violating the license agreement.

  • How to create editable form with non-updatable vo

    Hi,
i need to create a new form on non-updatable VO.
My requirement is: i have Data base View, based on that view i have created VO, based on this VO i need to create new form, when ever i submit a request, web service will invoke and that validate the data and sends to the data base.
when ever i drag drop the vo i couldn't able to enter any data bcoz all the data are coming in the form of output boxes.
can any one help how can i create this.

Check the setting of your viewobject attributes settings, most probably they are 'updatable never', set them to "updatable always".
This way you can drag the view as an editable form.
About sendind data to the database, i guess you have an idea how to do it afterwards :)

  • How to creater dynamic form in Acrobat 9

Can I make a form that will dynamically add pages (with header and footer) when needed in Adobe Acrobat 9 and if so where is the best documentation on how to do this?

You can dynamically add pages using templates. This requires some relatively simple JavaScript programming. It will work in Acrobat (Pro or Standard) and Reader 11 (Win/mac), but not previous versions of Reader. Here are some links to the Acrobat javaScript reference:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_Dev_Templates.80.1.html

If you don't get a two-paned window with the navigation pane on the left, click "Show Navigation" icon in the upper-left.
If it has to work with previous versions for Reader, Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows comes with the LiveCycle Designer application. With it you can create dynamic XFA forms that can work with Reader.

  • How to set a form field in pro so an 'adobe reader' user can insert a jpg (not a pdf) as an image. It used to work but now doesn't.

I think this question has been asked a million times before but I'm hoping something has been resolved now! It did work for me and my client a few months ago (by using the 'event.target.buttonImportIcon();' script. I'm 99% certain it worked fine a few months ago, where the adobe reader user could select a jpg to insert...but now it only allows a pdf. Does anyone know if anything can be done? I know you may say LiveCycle but is there really nothing else?
    Thanks in advance.

There's nothing to solve. If Reader (XI only) is used only PDF files can be selected. This is how it's supposed to work (although I agree it's silly and should be changed).

  • User editable forms in Acrobat........that can be saved in Reader?

    Howdy Y'all
I have a client that needs a contract made up that can be emailed to clients for them to "fill in" and able to be saved to send back with all of the fields filled out. The original document was made in Word and I just exported it to a PDF and created the forms for user editing. Unfortunately, I was unaware that Reader versions of Acrobat were unable to save the docs (I'm kind of sheltered in that I have only used retail versions of Acrobat). We were hoping to use Acrobat since it's pretty much universal and the Reader is free.
Does anyone know of a way to create forms in Acrobat (vers. 8 Pro) that can be "edited" or have info input by another user with Acrobat READER and save them so it can be sent back? I already know how to create the form fields......I'm just curious if there is a way to FORMAT these fields or the document itself so that whatever is input into these fields can be saved on the client's end so it can be sent back.
The only other option is to send the Word docs that were originally made up but I'm afraid we would run into issues of clients not having Word to open the documents up.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

  • How do I bring form fields to the front or back?

I have a document with many form fields/push-buttons in order to create pup-up effects in an info graphic.
So I use fields to create a mouse-over hot spot, and others that pop up. Now, of course, the hot spot must be in front (or on top), otherwise it gets distracted in it's mouse-over function by the popped-up object (image) that lays over it. (The result would look like a flashing effect, as you roll over the hot spot.)
Now how do I arrange the fields?? Ich can arrange images and texts to come to the front or hide behind other objects. But in the form field editing mode there is no such option. Also it doesn't work to just cut and paste them, they re-appear in their former position, often behind the other fields.
    Please, help! Thanks, Peder

Thanks, I will give it a try. To "recieve the focus" means being activated / hovered?

The tab order effectively sets the z-order, but if a field is not read-only it will be set to the front if it receives the focus.

  • How to disable certain form fields from a calculation with a check mark fields.

How to disable certain form fields from a calculation with a check mark fields.
In Canada we have to taxes
I create a form that calculate them to a total
I need to be able to turn off any of those to taxes to participate to the calculation and their visibile field should become 0
I was thinking using a checkbox (when checkbox is on (Yes) the tax is calculated, Not ticked (Off) the tax is not calculated and the visible field should show 0 or nothing....
I really need help on this one — I’m a complete newbie....
Remark that the second tax is calculated on the sum of what the first tax add (first tax is pan-canadian tax (all provinces).
The second tax is never use alone (Quebec only (on top of the Canadian one)
Sometime for outside Canada sell - No tax at all is calculated....
    What should I do?

I want to tank you to help, really appreciate —>
This is the code and order... I just trow the checkbox in there (they have, so far, no purpose...)
    The code use is
    var a = this.getField("pricehorstx");
    event.value = Math.round (a.value * 7.25) / 100
I guess -If the checkBox are check - The tax should be calculate — If “Off” the tax should be not calculated and PriceHST and /or PriceQST should show zero or be empty — The HST is always calculated in Canada, but the QST is added only in Quebec.
I need to turn both to Zero for international sale.

  • How to create a form that requires thousands of checkboxes?

    Hello forum members,
I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.  I've been searching the internet/forums for the past few hours and I can't seem to find any information on how to create a form with many checkboxes.  I do not want to have to give individual names to thousands of checkboxes.  I'm hoping there's an easy solution to my problem.  Maybe I don't even need to use checkboxes.
    Here it is...
I'm a DJ and wedding season is coming up.  For each wedding that I do, I usually give the bride and groom a list of my songs and they choose a bunch of songs that they'd like to have at their reception.  In the past, I've just been sending them a webpage word document with the songs and they'd send me their selections in a different document or directly in the reply email.  I'd like to make this process easy for them (and myself) by making a pdf document where they can simply place a checkmark beside the songs that they want and then send it back to me.  As a bonus (if it's possible) i'd like to be able to export the songs that they selected into a separate document so that I don't have to go through the entire pdf (with thousands and thousands of songs) when they send it back to me.
I would be ever greatful if somebody help me or direct me to a link with some additional information.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

George, thank you very much for your quick reply and good advice.
