Quicktime cannot play iPhone 4S movies

I recorded a couple videos on my new 4S and when I try to copy them to my XP laptop or play them in Quicktime, I get the following error:
"Error -2048: Couldn't open the file IMG_0001[1].MOV because it is not a file that Quicktime understands"
These videos play back fine on my phone. If I open my iPhone folder in Windows Explorer, I can right click the file properties and see that the files are around 1 meg each. However, if I try to copy the files to another folder or to my desktop, the resulting file is listed as 0mb and is unrecognized by the PC or Quicktime.
Please help!
Thanks,
Glen

I think I have figured out that this is an XP issue. The moves download and play fine on my wife's Vista laptop.

  • Cannot play iPhone imported Movies in iPhoto 08

    Hi there
I dont usually use iPhoto to manage my pictures. However, when doing an iPhoto import of my iPhone pics (is there another way to get the pics off my iPhone by the way) - the pictures appear fine in iPhoto but the videos do not play for some reason. If I do a right click -> Show file -> Open, it fires up Quicktime and plays the video fine. Surely, it should play within iPhoto natively without having to show the file in finder right? If so can anyone help me figure out whats going wrong please?

Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) will recover material from your phone or camera.

    Hi whatisitagain,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If the movie you downloaded from the iTunes Store is not playing in iTunes for Windows, start with the troubleshooting tips in this article:

I cannot play my rented movie because itunes cannot locate where the original file, has anyone face this problem before? Where can I find the location of the downloaded movie?

What did you use to download it with? iPad? iPhone? Computer?
If it's an iPad/iPhone, play it using the videos app.
If on the computer, look on the left side of iTunes in the library under movies.

  • I upgraded some things and Quicktime stopped playing MPEG-2 movies (black screen)!

I upgraded some things and Quicktime stopped playing MPEG-2 movies (black screen)!
I need help, I was ending a project and now it just plays black!
    I have quicktime X.
    HELP! PLEASE!
    thank you.

Quicktime was working fine, I am not sure what Quicktime it was. I upgraded Java, I am not sure if I upgraded Quicktime. After that all quicktime movies with "MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode" codecs started playing black with audio in the background. iMovie was not used. Thank you, I am beyond desperate and I am starting to think no one can help me with this.
Then I am not sure how your created the MPEG-2/PCM MOV files. Files not imported via the MPEG-2 Import codec would normall remain in their long GOP compression format which it not edit compatible in QT based video editors. Those that are imported via the codec to make them edit-compatible then need the codec for proper playback in QT based players/editors.
Since you now say that "Quicktime is working fine," am I to assume that it is After Effects that is playing "black" screen videos and that the files play fine in the QT players? Since you also mention the files are time coded, am I to assume you used FCP or some other app to import the files (which may use the same sort of import workflow) or am I to assume it is the timecode data itself that you feel is now causing the problem. In either case, a Java update may have been a security update that is now causing your current issue by disallowing access to the required playback component for some unknown reason which Apple is unlikely to divulge if it refers to a software security risk.
If problem is general on your system, then do you have a short sample file that you can upload for testing purposes on my Snow Leopard system? At the very least, this may confirm if the problem is general to all updated platforms or local to your individual system and/or user account.

  • ITunes cannot play my rented movie. The timeline stops and no error message pop up.

I rented two movies from iTunes store yesterday. It's still valid. But my iTunes cannot play it. After I click on the 'play' button, the timeline does no move forward and the screen remains in black. No error message pops up. What's wrong with this iTunes player??

It's always the case because iCloud is active all the time and if the device indicated Backup to iCloud an your computer indicated Backup to Computer, you may run into problem.
But this can never be a problem. When you select "Back up to computer" and press apply, iTunes "updates files" on the iphone. I'm not an engineer and my best guess is that by updating the files iTunes changes the device's settings to point to "Backup to Computer".
[Earlier: The sync button used to be visible only after the files were updated. Now, when "Back up to Computer" is selected and we press apply, iTunes indicates that its updating files but the option then shifts back to "Back up to iCloud"]
Incidentally, I was playing around with this and I clicked on encrypt local back and set a password and iTunes accepted that and updated the backup on my computer. This is pretty wierd considering its not accepting "Backup to computer" otherwise.
    wiclee wrote:
I wonder how you were able to do that without turning off iCloud Backup on your device.
I guess the older versions of itunes supported that. This problem cropped up after updating to 10.6.0.4

With Sync over wifi enabled iTunes used to open automatically for me whenever my iPhone logged onto the wifi network. Which was a very useful feature for me. I'm extremely disappointed that this is not working now.

  • Cannot play iPhone 4s created videos via Airplay on Apple Tv

I have had this issue ever since upgrading to the 4s.  I cannot play the videos created on my 4S on Apple TV via Airplay.  The same error occurs whether I try to pull the video from the Apple TV itself, the iPhone 4S, or the iMac.  Very frustrating.  The phone takes beautiful video but I shouldnt have to move the video to my PC and hook it up to the TV via HDMI to watch it.  Thanks for any help.

    Hi RTen1,
What do you see when you double tap the home button on the iPhone 4s?
When I double tap to get the Multitasking Bar, then swipe all the way to the left, I do see the volume control and the Airplay icon.  Clicking the Airplay icon lets me choose the Apple TV and set Mirroring on.  Then when I play my presentation, I see it on the TV.
I don't see it if WiFi is off.  Also make sure the Apple TV is on the same network.

  • Why does the new Quicktime NOT play my old MOV files?

    Hi Folks.
I'm using the lasted updated Yosemite on a 3-year old iMac.
Back in my early iMac days (3 years ago), I imported my camcorder's AVCHD files
into iMove or Final Cut Express and converted them to Quicktime MOV files.
Turns out they were rendered by Apple or Final Cut into MOV files using the
Apple Intermediate codec.  I had no choice over this.
Until I upgraded to Yosemite, I was able to preview any of these movies
very easily in the Finder.  Simply highlight the movie, press the spacebar,
and it opens, in a real-time, real-size screen, with a simple play-pause button
in the progress bar at the bottom.  Never had a problem with any previous
    Mac OS.
Now when I click on the file in the finder, instead of a movie preview, I get a
big, silent QT "Mov" icon that just sits there looking silly.
I double click it to open it up in Quicktime, and it attempts to go through this
lengthy conversion process, taking at least as long as the movie is in minutes,
then asking me if I want to save this new "converted" version.
Fortunately, I have an old version of Quicktime 7 on my Mac, and QT 7 opens it
and plays it no problem.  No "conversion" necessary.  No cumbersome and
space-hogging needs to create a "cloned" copy, just so the new, lame version
    of Quicktime can play it.
What's up, Apple?  AIC was YOUR codec that YOUR SOFTWARE chose to
transcode into.  Now, your new Quicktime does NOT support this codec?
And your old version does?  And why might THAT be?
Really, this is so elementary.  This is not rocket science.  Just like JPG images
not displaying properly in Mac Mail now.  It begs the question "why" ...?
I mean, for the elementary preview abilities that always made Mac such a
friendly computer ... *uh* ... where is that?
And here we go, wasting hours of time, looking for fixes that should not
    have to be "fixed"...
Did I miss something?  Or did you?

Aeclay: here's a couple of ideas.  And an answer to your earlier post.
Basically two options to work with here:
Store the files as native AVCHD files... OR
    Convert the files to Quicktime
I keep two archives of my AVCHD recordings, partly for backup, and partly for Sony's ability to archive nicely in it's own native format on it's PC-friendly utility called "PMB".  (came wtih both my NEX and ALPHA cameras).   I have an old PC that I use for my complete archive; Sony's PMB utility works only on PC's and will do a good job both of archiving, providing a thumbnail database, and re-writing your choice to removable media in it's typical Sony hierarchy.
If you've only got Mac's, you can still archive your AVCHD recordings; copy them to folders named or organized to your own spec's.   AVCHD is a high-quality compression format, and they'll take up way less disk space than converted Quicktime MOV files.   You can open and play all AVCHD movies quite easily with VLC player.
The only extra trick to be aware of here is this.  The only reason you would need to preserve the intact "sony" folders (named "AVCHD" / "BMDV" etc) is is you were using Adobe Premiere as a video editor.  Somehow, it needs the hierarchical folder stuff in place to properly index the files.  Not mandatory, but helpful if  you are a Premiere user.  Otherwise, forget the weird "package" folders; just right-click (ctrl-click) on them, choose "view package contents" and MOVE the MTS files out of the Sony hierarchy for permanent storage.  Use VLC player to open and view them.
From that point on,  you have control over how you manage the files and what intermediate or end-user format you convert them to for your own use.
I'm not clear on your other question about the files that add the word "converted" on.  Of course Mac will convert to Quicktime MOV files.  Not sure what codec they're using now, likely H.264.  Anyway, don't bother converting.  It'll take up a lot of time and waste a lot of disk space.
ps. I just found this free utility on the internet.  It's called "MTS CONVERTER". I have not tried it, but it claims to be able to convert all AVCHD files to various useable formats.
Good luck!  (and happy Valentine's Day!)

  • TS1389 I have done all the above but I still can't get Quicktime to play a HD movie I purchased on itunes.  I get error message "This computer could not be authorized to play [movie title]"

I have looked extensively online but can't find an answer yet.
I also tried playing the HD movie in VCL Media Player.  I select the movie in finder, right-click to Open With VCL. Window opens with Library menu on left and first item in the menu is Playlist.  HD movie is listed in the playlist.  I select Play and counter at bottom of window starts counting as if movie is playing but nothing else happens.
    Help greatly appreciated.

Tried some more movies in my library and it seems that all movies purchased in the iTunes Stores UK with my iTunes UK account wont play in Quicktime (or VCL media player).  These movies will play in itunes.
This is cleary a DRM issue but don't I have the same legal rights to play my movies regardless of which iTunes store I  purchased from?

  • I cannot play a video .mov file in Photoshop Elements 12, it shows as a blank white screen

I cannot play a video file (.mov) in Adobe Photoshop Elements, only can hear sound, and shows as a blank white screen.

    Margie
    Thanks for the replies.
I did some homework on your camera, and it appears to be recording H.264 video compression, Linear PCM Stereo, with a .mov file extension.
Let us do a check list to make sure we agree on the details...
    a. You cannot play back the video in the Elements Organizer 12
    b. Can you import this video into Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace with the program's Add Media/Files and Folder/Project Assets? Does it then show up in Project Assets with an image in the thumbnail? Can you drag the video from Project Assets to the Timeline and have the Edit Mode monitor display that video and play it back there when you hit the monitor play button?
From what I have read of your camera, you could be recording 1920 x 1080 @ 60 progressive frames per second. Can you supply an information on that? What are you or the project setting as the project preset (See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio.)
Could you explain what you mean by
and can play it in the video editor, but it just shows the frames, not a real video play.
I am searching the Internet to see if I can find a sample file that I can download.
    More later.

  • Quicktime Broadcaster Play quick time movie

Can Quicktime Broadcaster play a .mov video file... or can it only use camera inputs?
CamCamX has the ability to play video as if it were the isight camera... but this software is more than I need. I just need to play one video through Broadcaster.
I want to use broadcaster as opposed to the server because most days I do a live broadcast through broadcaster. On days that i do not I just want to play a prerecorded file. But my viewers will come to the same link so I want to use the same application.

The file must meet the following specifications to play correctly.
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    -or-
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.
You may need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).

  • Cannot play or transfer movie to iTouch or iPhone

Purchased several movies and TV shows on iTunes and downloaded them to iTunes on my computer.  The movies are "Thor: Tales of Asgard" and Scooby Doo TV series Season 2 consisting of 8 TV shows.  Tried to sync onto an iTouch 4th gen,  iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4.  All syncs generated the message stating the movies cannot be played on device.
All movies are in standard definition.  I am running the latest versions of both iTunes, iTouch and iPhone software.  Movie descriptions in iTunes makes no mention of not being compatible with the iTouch or iPhone.  I have paid for these and now cannot transfer them to my son's iTouch as planned.  I want a refund!
Have tried to use iTunes conversion to iPod or iPhone option but when the movie is selected the option is greyed out.
    Suggestions please.

You can use a computer to convert the file for iPad playback in iTunes.
QuickTime X can also export for iPad use.

  • QuickTime wont play my mpeg4 movies

I just got a new Sony DSC-T99 Cypbershot camera. the "HD" video files that I've been taking will not play in quicktime. I import them through iPhoto, then when I double click the video I get the following message. "Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page." Then it will play the audio but the screen is black.
    the files are .mp4. I think 1280 x 720.
I tried importing through iMovie '09 and was also unsuccessful.
Any suggestions... I dont want to have to convert files everytime I want to watch a video I recorded.
    thanks,
    jake

If I wanted to post a sample of the video, how would I do that?
If the file is smaller than your ISP/Mail client limit, email it. If larger and your ISP includes adequate free storage space post it there. If you have a MobileMe account, post it to your Public folder. If you don't have commercial online storage space available, check into site offering free temporary storage for the purpose of posting/distributing files. (Unfortunately, I don't use the latter, and so cannot suggest any by name for you.)_ If all else fails, email me and I will see about setting up a temporary password for you to post it my account area.
I am told thh file is MPEG-4, AVC/H.264, Approx. 30 fps, Progressive, AAC, mp4 format. they couldn't tell me the exact data compression. I was however, able to watch the file using the VLC media player. Does that help?
Not really. Information available online already indicated the 1920x1080 mode employed AVCHD (format developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic which was designed for Blu-ray disc compatibility) and the 1280x720 mode using MPEG-4. Since you were not 100% sure about the mode and did not indicate if your attempt to import via iMovie was done directly from the camera (calls special different import modules) or from iPhoto via the Finder (a simple Move/Copy operation) we still do not have the total picture. I would however, lean more towards it being an MPEG4/AAC file in an MP4 file container requiring an add-on video component. Nor have you indicated whether or not you have the Perian component package installed which might be able to handle the video data.

  • Cannot play any downloaded movies on Apple TV

I have a downloaded movie in my iTunes library, and Home Sharing is enabled both on my Apple TV and on my iTunes. The same thing always happens when I try to play the movie. The play bar will appear, showing the correct time, but the spiral loading icon will keep spinning forever while never loading the movie. The exact same thing happens when I try to airplay a video I shot on my iPhone.
I never get this problem when airplaying YouTube, HBO Go, or Netflix. What is causing this problem with local videos, and how do I fix it?

    1. Do you have by any chance your iTunes Library stored on an external drive?
    2. Does Apple TV plays your movie after you have once restarted your iTunes?
As of today my only option is after a fresh download to restart iTunes and it works again.
Currently investigation and once found out I will post it here.
    It is really anoying.
    I found that article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
it seems Apple is aware of this connectivity issues and offers what I am doin anyway. When it comes to connection problem restart everything (seems that is a more easy solution for them instead of fixing it)

After playing around with this alot, I moved the clips from one event to another, and then reduced the number of clips in each event file. My theory is that if an event file has too many clips, for some reason it cannot "handle" the audio. Once I reduced the number of clips per event file, everything worked fine.
