10.9.4 update- MacBook Pro now too slow to use
I installed the 10.9.4 update on July 17. Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It has since become too slow to be functional. 'Spinning wheel' constantly, and delays after keystrokes. I had no problems at all before this update. I have read that repairing disk permissions sometimes helps and have tried that. I sometimes have brief periods of normal performance, then it slows down again.
The problem is not specific to an application. It is slow regardless of what I am doing, even when first staring up and logging in.
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Failed attempt to restart after updates, MacBook Pro now frozen on start up.
Hi, please forgive my ignorant description, I am useless outside of emails and documents.
This morning I clicked yes to update my MacBook Pro. I think it was on mountain lion and had an upgrade bundle. During the restart the charger plug was dislodged for a few seconds. It came up with an error message (along the lines of "not all updates successful" and prompted for a restart. I restarted and after the start up sound I am frozen on a white screen that says -
panic (CPU 0 caller 0 xffffff8028e59241): "Unable to find driver for this platform:\"ApCI\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.20.9/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExp ert.cpp:1548
Further down it says Mac OS version not yet set.
I tried turning it off and on again and ended up back at the same screen message. Also tried control option escape and nothing happens. I live in regional SE QLD, nearest Apple store is in Brisbane. Is there anything I can do or do I have to wait till I can get it to a professional?
Thanks.Boot into your Recovery partition (if you can) by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there elect to resinatll the OS (you may need your Apple ID and password for this). You'll not erase any data, etc., by installing a fresh OS.
Once your OS install is complete, you can restart and go through the update process again, this time remembering not to unplug from mains while the updates are installing.

My Macbook Pro is too slow!
I am only running Firefox, Papers2 and Pages and 3.99GB of my 4GB ram is being used up. A detailed description of my system I took with EtreCheck is below.
There is a kernel task that is using a lot of my memory, does anyone know what this is ?
I hope someone can help me !

Macbook pro retina, too much ram used & performance problems
i've recently got my macbook pro with retina display, 128 gb i5 intel 2.6Hz processor with 8gb memory, OS Yosemite 10.10.1. problems began to appear the very first moment i've turned it on: at the last step of profile creation (the step where you choose a name and a password of your profile), after i've filled all the fields and clicked some button to proceed, my macbook refused to boot and froze. i've restarted the computer and then it booted just fine. Then new problems appeared: after installing some apps from mac app store, they wouldn't load the first time i open them, - i had to close them and reopen. Once again, this issue wasn't appearing with every app - only with a few ones. I assumed that this was a software issue which will disappear after i update. And well, i didn't observe this problem ever since i've updated the OS. However, i can't be sure that it disappeared.
Also, i monitor RAM consumption using the Memory Clean app. there are like only 3.60 gb free space out of 8. is it ok?
so, what i am asking: should i take my macbook to a store to get it fixed or this problem is just a software and not a hardware issue and i just have to wait?
Thanks@_Macuser wrote:

That is normal. The Mavericks and Yosemite OSXs use as much RAM as is available in order to increase efficiency.. The parameter that you should monitor is 'pressure', not the amount. If it is GREEN, you are operating within acceptable limits. If there is a color change, then more RAM may be required or there may be other issues that may need attention.

Since you have a new MBP, your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them sort out the issues for you. Your MBP has a warranty, use it.

Why is my Macbook pro now extremely slow and not running things like powerpoint any more?
I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Mavericks installed. Now my Macbook Pro is slower than a one-legged tortoise.
It won't run powerpoint, which just crashes. en my keyboard misses the first part of sentences because it can't keep up. I have to double check everything I type. I'm trying to run a business, and I'm losing time, money and the will to live.
I cannot reinstall microsoft office, as I bought my macbook Pro (2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) from a seller who cleanly installed Mountain lion for me, and installed Office 11 on it. I do not have any installation disks. I have been forced to downgrade to Mountain Lion, which I'm still waiting for Apple to send to me.
Is there anyone out there who can give me any help. I'm not paying Apple any more money. Why should I? I've already been forced to rebuy an operating system that my Macbook previously had installed.
Not only that, I think I have an expanding battery issue, and my trackpad is now broken. Just to add to my woes.
Has anyone had a solution to solving the Mavericks debacle?
Please somebody, help.
Please.
Before I start self harming.Hi all;
I agree with stobston, many thanks to cbs20 for your inputs. I was stuck with this one also. I'm a former UNIX sysadmin; thanks so much for pointer to etrecheck. It's nice to be able to look under the hood.
I had the same problem, Powerpoint was so slow as to be nearly useless. Apparently different cause&effect from stobston's case. Here's what worked for me. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious below; I'm new to MacOS after many years on MS-Windows;
First, I ran etrecheck and got the following;

Note that I had no heavy CPU processes like stobston had. There are some processes using lots of memory though. Made me wonder, could it be a swap or contention issue? I have a Macbook Air, so 'swapping' doesn't mean what it used to mean. Anyway, I tried closing Excel and Finder. Powerpoint was still slow. I ran etrechek again. WebProcess and mds are still running at the same memory usage; nearly half a gig between them. WebProcess is Safari; shutting down Safari didn't help. I have heard that Safari has had memory leaks, I don't know if that's true or not. mds is the MetaData Server for SpotLight. I had run Spotlight several times today, and also did a lot of desktop cleanup. That might have triggered mds.
I don't know how well Mountain Lion reclaims memory ( now I'm really getting into the weeds ), so I shut down MacOS and restarted it. This time, I started up PowerPoint first, with nothing else running. Problem solved. PPT is running fine.
Thanks again all for your inputs. An hour ago, I had no idea where to start. -
Retina Macbook Pro wifi too slow at home, other devices are fine though
I bought Retina macbook Pro 15inch couple months ago.
The internet speed seems ok at school, but when at home it is too slow that I can't do anything at all.
But my other devices like iphone/ ipad works great and has fast internet.
So I upgraded internet service, from 15mb speed to 30,
but it still is slow.
I turned off the bluetooth, and seemed like it help tiny bit with the speed but I can't have anything done with this speed.
Do I need to buy a new modem / router?
Thank you for the hlep in advance.Hold down the Option key and click on the WiFi Icon on the menuBar.
This will reveal all sorts of information about your Network and what is around you.
Look for what channel your Router is on. See if any other Routers are trying to use the same channel.
Look for the transmit level, something like -75.
Look for the transmit rate. -
After software update macbook pro works very slow and no applications will open
Updated software today, since software updated macbook is running really really slow (approx. 4 mins from pushing the power button to home screen) and no applications including itunes will work. Anyone any ideas???

Tried this, to no avail, applications (itunes, pages, iphoto) still won't open & MacBook still running very slow
thanks anyway
Did you restart your computer after repairing permissions?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
Your system info says:
MacBook Pro
Yet, in your postings you say: "MacBook" which is an entirely different computer. Typo? Are you in the correct community area? -
Macbook Pro gets so slow when using Wi-Fi
Hi Everyone,
I bought a Macbook Pro 15 back in 2010.
4GB Ram, i5 processor
It's been a while that I've detected a big loss in my computer performances.
Going slow, spinning wheels, dock/windows animations not fluid...and sometimes it even freezes.
Sounds keep coming out, if there were some, but the screen is completely dead. I can move the pointer but nothing responds.
Sometimes I even have graphic glitches in some part of the screen (or the whole screen one time) that appear just before it freezes.
I tried everything: Boot in safe mode, Boot with Cmd+Alt+R+P , Utility Disk to check and repair errors, and even the system check booting with the installation disk (sorry don't remember the name of the application but...it said no errors found.)
Recently I was in vacation from the other side of the world, and when trying to use the wifi of the house, after 2-3 minutes of navigating, here comes the spinning wheel and, again, it freezes.
I had to shut down manually by holding the power button, and when restarted, since I've added that wifi to my favourites (before noticing the problem) I couldn't even finish the boot that that it started to freeze again.
After an entire afternoon, trying to get rid of this, I shutted down the wifi router because I was starting to think that the problem was the wifi itself.
It worked!
Without WiFi connection, the computer was working perfect.
I've been 3 weeks without using that WiFi and the computer was like almost new. No freeze, everything worked fine. Great!
Now that I'm back home, using my wifi as usual, I noticed that in fact, what is slowing my computer is wi-fi connecton.
Not sure why I couldn't even use it with that connection, but I'm definitely sure that Wi-Fi has something to do with the slow performance I used to have (and still having) on my computer.
Is there something I could do to repair this?
Or something I should check?
Wi-Fi connection is killing my computer...
Thanks! If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

Macbook Pro 2011 too slow for FCPX?
I have a MB Pro 2011 i7, 2 ghz processor and recently upgraded to 16gb ram for my video editing. im using fcpx but I didn’t see much difference when in terms of speed when I upgraded my ram from 4-16gb when I’m using this program. I was just wondering if this is because of my processor?
Ram Does not speed up any process, but it alowes you to work with bigger files 16 gb (HUGE FILES) The program itself will not run noticebly faster by upgrading the ram. The processor does all the thinking. (making things a tiny bit faster tho) Video editing is all about the processor.
That's why a processor cost 3-400$ and a 16gb ram cost about 60..
But then, you could upgrade your harddrive to a SSD! THAT my friend would certainly speed up every process in your computer, From boot time, to end time!
You can go a LOONG way with a 256gb SSD if you work with files up to 200gb, But you would have to have a external harddrive to store your files!
SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-sata_6_0_gb-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TD250BW/dp/B0 09NHAEXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1353334079&sr=8-1&keywords=Samsung+ssd+256
External HD: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STBV3000100/dp/B00834SJ U8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1353334112&sr=8-4&keywords=external+hd

Also keep in mind: A i7 DESKTOP processor is about 40% faster than a i7 Laptop Processor
Hope this helped -
Macbook Air is too slow to use
My Macbook Air takes nearly 30 minutes to start up, and often even when I am just running 1-2 applications takes 10 minutes to respond to a key or click.
OS X 10.6.8, 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB memory.
For a while, running permission repairs weekly helped.
I have cleared the cache form Firefox, stopped using Safari b/c it was too bulky.
Activity monitor shows I still have 33 GB memory, and that the percent of processes running is low, even when the computer is slow.
Sometimes everything freezes for 10 mintues, other times, I see the spinning disc for a long time.
The worst is that each time the computer goes to sleep, it can take me 10-20 minutes to wake it up.
Please tell me the hard drive isn't dying again--the first one that came with the machine died only 4 months after I'd had it, and this one is barly 2.5 years old.Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. If I buy a MacBook Pro now will it update to the new Yosemite in the fall?
If I buy a MacBook Pro now, will it update to the new Yosemite software in the fall?
If you purchase a brand new model, yes. If you purchase an older one, it depends on what the system requirements for Yosemite are, which aren’t publicly available.

Why I am buying a new MacBook Pro now, but, first, any major issues?
With the delay of Ivy Bridge, and with my personal view that the next generation of MacBook Pro notebooks will be dropping FireWire 800 to service a better design, I have decided to purchase a new MacBook Pro now.
I just cannot imagine the new notebooks having a FireWire or Ethernet port, as they add too much thickness.
While I keep MacBook Pros for up to 4-years, I think this new purchase will have to be a transition computer, as the next model will probably be too irresitable. Having the option of then moving my data via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Tarket Disk Mode) is very appealing too.
So, any issues with the current line?
Specifically, has anyone had a screen flicker issue or anything else major?
Would anyone dare say Thunderbolt is unreliable?
I really appreciate any thoughts on this - Thank you!Shootist007 wrote:

I am so sorry, but you are dead wrong.
First, people get their problems resolved here quickly. A majority of the issues here are "Newbie" issues.
I have been a Mac user since 2007, and I have been on these forums since that time too. I have never once seen a horror story like the ones found on the Dell, Lenovo, and HP support forums that pop up on an hourly basis.
Read those forums, and you will get tears in your eyes.
Anytime I have called Apple or visited an Apple Store, they have treated me like a God.
Apple hardware is bullet proof made of the best materials on the planet. A MacBook Pro is far stronger and more durable than any ThinkPad, Dell Precision, or HP Elitebook.
Just open up a MacBook Pro to look at the insides as compared to the disaster zones of the aforementioned PCs.
Oh.... and no bloody stickers on MY notebook.
Everything just works.
Little things come up, but they are always solved.
Now, add programs like Joint Venture, and heaven is a place on earth.
No PC company comes close to treating their customers the way Apple has treated me since 07.
Apple has earned my business for life.
Right now, I can schedule a call with Apple - What PC company does that?
Apple = Unequaled products, service, and support. No PC company can come close to any of those three traits.

And none of those PC forums have people like Kappy, Eww, Bee, Niel, iVmichael, sig, Etresoft, (yourself), and all the other fine members of this community that make it such a pleasure... -
Battery Not Charging after 10.6.8 Update (Macbook Pro 13' i5 2011)
Hi,
I own a 4 months old Macbook Pro 13in with i5 processor. I was using it normally until yesterday, when a software update prompting for enhancements on thunderbolt drivers and some stuff regarding OS X Lion was displayed. I started the software update, let the macbook plugged in and went to sleep.
Today I found out that my battery is not charging anymore (when plugged in, the magsafe led lights green and the energy saver displays Not Charging). I've already tried to restart SMC to no result(unplugged, waited for 15 sec, plugged again and after 5 sec turned it on).
Basically, my macbook is now useless. I use it mainly in the college, cant have it always plugged in and my second half classes start tomorrow!
I dont have a time machine backup.
I dont want to open the macbook since its still under warranty. What should I do?

Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck. You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is. If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it. If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache. Safari/Empty Cache Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top. If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.
