10gr2 standard edition standby question - archive log shipping

Hello,
I have 2 servers with 10gr2 standard edition, one is production(primary) and secondary is standby on windows platform. To keep standby synchronized i use a script to copy archived logs from primary to standby and applying manually (with scripts).
My question is: can i use redo transport service in order to copy archivelogs from primary to standby ?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,
It is a bit of topic.
According to the Licensing Document page 10 DataGuard is not supported for standard edition.

  • Standby database archive log apply in production server.

    Dear All,
How I apply standby database archive log apply in production server.
    Please help me.
    Thanks,
    Manas

How can i use standby database as primary for that 48 hour ?Perform a switchover (role transitions).
First check if the standby is in sync with the primary database.
    Primary database:
    sql>select max(sequence#) from v$archived_log; ---> Value AStandby database:
    sql>select max(sequence#) from v$archived_log where applied='YES'; -----> Value BCheck if Value B is same as Value A.
If the standby is in sycn with the primary database, then perform the switchover operation (refer the below link)

  • Lync Standard Edition Server pairing -- Archiving and monitoring collocated but Single SQL backend

    Hi,
I have a scenario where in ---we have Two Standard Edition Servers ( SE1 and SE2) with 1K users each ( Total 2K in one Site) paired to enable High Availability. The Standard Edition Server has archiving and monitoring and mediation server collocated.
For archiving + monitoring database we have a Seperate SQL enterprise edition server.
    Quetions:
    1. Can we use single SQL Enterprise Edition as backend for (archiving and monitoring ) for both SE1 and SE2 ?
    2. If yes, do we need two seperate instances?
    3. If not, could you please suggest the best possible solution in such an environment ?
    Regards,
    Archana Rao

    Hi ArchanaVR,
Agree with Michael, and add some more details.
By default, the SQL Server Express back-end database is collocated on the Standard Edition server. You cannot move it to a separate computer. With one exception, you cannot collocate other databases on the Standard Edition server. If you choose to deploy
Persistent Chat Server on a Standard Edition server, you can collocate the Persistent chat database and the Persistent Chat Compliance database on the same Standard Edition server.
You can collocate each of the following databases on a single database server:
    Monitoring database
    Archiving database
A back-end database for an Enterprise Edition Front End pool
You can collocate any or any or all of these databases in a single SQL instance or use a separate SQL instances for each, with the following limitations:
Each SQL instance can contain only a single back-end database (for an Enterprise Edition Front End pool), single Monitoring database, single Archiving database, single persistent chat database, and single persistent chat compliance database.
The database server cannot support more than one Enterprise Edition Front End pool, one server running Archiving, one server running Monitoring, single Persistent Chat database, and single Persistent Chat compliance database, but it can support one of each,
regardless of whether the databases use the same instance of SQL Server or separate instances of SQL Server.

  • Standby creating archives log files issue!

    Hello Everyone,
Working on oracle 10g R2/Windows, I have created a dataguard with one standby database, but there is a strange issue that happen, and I'll need someone to shed the light to me.
By default archived log created from the primary database should be the  sent to the stanndby database, but I found that the standby database has plus one archived log file.
    From the primary database:
    SQL> archive log list;
    Database log mode Archive Mode
    Automatic archival Enabled
    Archive destination C:\local_destination1_orcl
    Oldest online log sequence 1021
Next log sequence to archive 1023
    Current log sequence 1023
    contents of C:\local_destination1_orcl
    1_1022_623851185.ARC
    from the standby database:
    SQL> archive log list
    Database log mode Archive Mode
    Automatic archival Enabled
    Archive destination C:\local_destination1_orcl
    Oldest online log sequence 1022
Next log sequence to archive 0
    Current log sequence 1023
    contents of C:\local_destination1_orcl
    1_1022_623851185.ARC
1_1023_623851185.ARC ---> this is the extra archive file created in the standby database, should someone let me know how to avoid this?
    Thanks for your help

Thanks against for your contribution, but I'm still not know why standby create and arhive files too?

  • Standby Database (Archive Log Mode)

I'm going to be setting up a standby database.
I understand that the primary database must be in archive log mode.
Is there any reason for the standby database to be in archivelog mode?

Since your primary Db is in archive log mode, so will be your standby, when it is made primary.But. you can use STANDBY REDO LOGS from 9i version, where these Standby Redo Logs then store the information received from the Primary Database.
    As per metalink:-
    >
Standby Redo Logs are only supported for the Physical Standby Database in Oracle 9i and as well for Logical Standby Databases in 10g. Standby Redo Logs are only used if you have the LGWR activated for archival to the Remote Standby Database. If you have Standby Redo Logs, the RFS process will write into the Standby RedoLog as mentioned above and when a log switch occurs, the Archiver Process of the Standby Database will archive this Standby Redo Log to an Archived Redo Log, while the MRP process applies the information to the Standby Database. In a Failover situation, you will also have access to the information already written in the Standby Redo Logs, so the information will not be lost.

  • Standby database Archive log destination confusion

    Hi All,
    I need your help here..
This is the first time that this situation is arising. We had sync issues in the oracle 10g standby database prior to this archive log destination confusion. So we rebuilt the standby to overcome this sync issue. But ever since then the archive logs in the standby database are moving to two different locations.
The spfile entries are provided below:
    *.log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/'
    *.standby_archive_dest='/m99/oradata/MARDB/standby'
Prior to rebuilding the standby databases the archive logs were moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ location which is the correct location. But now the archive logs are moving to both /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ and /m99/oradata/MARDB/standby location, with the majority of them moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/standby location. This is pretty unusual.
The archives in the production are moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ location itself.
Could you kindly help me overcome this issue.
    Regards,
    Dan

    Hi Anurag,
    Thank you for update.
Prior to rebuilding the standby database the standby_archive_dest was set as it is. No modifications were made to the archive destination locations.
The primary and standby databases are on different servers and dataguard is used to transfer the files.
I wanted to highlight one more point here, The archive locations are similar to the ones i mentioned for the other stndby databases. But the archive logs are moving only to /archive location and not to the /standby location.

  • Physical standby in archive log mode

    HI ,
Our phyiscal standby database is running in archive log mode,
1.Is it manadatory to have it in archive log mode ?
2.As it is in archive log mode , does it produce any archivelog ?

    Hello again;
The Standby is a clone of the Primary. I assume we are talking Physical Standby.
Why does it need to produce archive in standby role? Its does not produce archive in the Standby role. I have seen a Standby produce a log now and then, but not log after log like a primary. A Standby database does not write Redo or use Redo logs, it uses Standby Redo logs. Since Redo logs are not used, archive is not written.
Why it is manadatory to enable archive log in standby?Smart design I'm thinking. Why would Oracle make us add this complex step to a failover/switchover?
    Keep it simple if possible.

  • Assign 2 of Windows Server 2012 Standard edition licensing question

I'm new at this and I have bought Windows 2012 Standard with 5 CALs back in January from Microsoft store on the Internet using as the host. There is Windows 2008 R2 installed as the virtual machine on the host. Few hours ago I have decided to buy another
license with 5 CALs to upgrade those even that I did need two license of Windows 2012 Standard anyway to support 4 physical processor as my server have quad core processor.
The question here that I need to ask is how do I assign 2 license of Windows Server 2012 Standard edition on the host to lift the limit and that up to 4 VMs will be allowed or does it automatically do that after upgrading to Windows 2012 Standard in
the virtual machine even that 5 CALs plus 5 CALs equal 10 CALs are done automatically?

    Hello,
    You have 2 questions here:
    1. How can I stack multiple OS licence in order to have more virtualization rights (more VMs) running on that host?
    2. How can I stack Windows CAL licence from OEM.
    Answers are:
    1. You only have to licence the original licence on the physical host. You can use the same license key for all 4 VMs or use 2 VM key from the first package and 2 VM keys from the second licence package you just bought.
There is nowhere to register those licence, except one by one inside the VM themselves.
You have to keep all licence document in case of control by Microsoft.
    2. Windows CAL allows a user (or a computer) to connect to an unlimited number of Windows Server within your company network. You have 10 CAL so you can have up to 10 users or computers in your company that will connect to your servers (even if you have 1.000
    servers)
There is nowhere to register those licence, except one by one inside the VM themselves.
You have to keep all licence document in case of control by Microsoft.
    Regards
PS: The only licence that require maintenance and central registration are Remote Desktop Licences.
MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2010 MCTS: Lync Server 2010, Configuring MCSE
That is what I thought as I was told before even seen licensing details except a direction of how to attach the second license and I had to make sure. Thank you

  • Oracle 9iAS Standard Edition licensing question

What, if anything, can be stored in OID if I purchase 9iAS standard edition? Here is my configuration:
    * Login via Oracle Portal
    * I need to support both authentication and authorization at the web and EJB levels
Obviously, the security info needs to be stored in some JNDI-compliant server. Can that server be OID or do I need to store in the file-based provider (jazn-data.xml)?
If I cannot use OID, has anyone successfully used a different LDAP server with 9iAS?
    Thanks,
    Ara

    Hi,
We have Primay and logical database configuration both in RAC in Production. both database are in 10.2.0.4.
Everyday we having issue of some archivelog not transfered to logical server around 2AM. I am having good exposure in Logical/Log minor/Goldgendate and can say fal server/client server configuration is correct.
Can you guys please give some input of what can cause this.
Yes we take RMAN backup of both database around 1:30 using control file instead of recovery catalog and I doubt this put lock on control file and cause this issue.
I would be glad of you could help me out in this.

Do you think creating recovery catalog will resolve it?
Yes, I do. (But I do not know for sure)
If it helps when I got to this part I decided to backup either the Primary or the Standby, but not both.
I decided Primary only and documented how to recreate my standby without downtime.
    I hope this helps.
    regards.

I am getting confused from where i got the archive file ARC00032_0633898426.001 in standby only which is not in primary?
    Please clarify this...

Please let me know abiut the above issue, i will be thankful to you.

  • Implementing replication in Oracle 10&11 Standard Edition

I am implementing an oracle based application which will run under Linux/Oracle 10gr2 standard edition and which will soon be upgraded to Oracle 11g standard edition.
One of the requirements of the application is that a hot standby must be provided. To provide the hot standby, I must implement some sort of replication mechanism, but the nice replication features (data guard, streams, advanced replication, basic replication) are only available with Oracle enterprise edition.
    Two questions:
    1. It appears that I will be building a home-made replication mechanisms. I am planning on using insert/update/delete triggers and dblinks to trap database updates and propogate them to the standby server. (alternatively, may write them to files as SQL statements and have the second server load the files). Is their a better way to implement replication in Oracle SE. (esp. a feature of Oracle SE that I could be using to do this?).
    2. Oracle Advanced and Basic Replication are not shown in the Oracle 11 Editions Description web page which lists the availability of features across the various oracle versions. I assume it is still supported in Oracle 11, but is Oracle Streams now the "best practice" for implementing replication (i.e. instead of advanced replication?)
    Thanks in advance,
    Werner

    1) Having database triggers that use a database link is an exceptionally poor way of implementing a hot standby. If the database link goes down, or if the remote database is unavailable, the trigger will generate an exception and the parent transaction will be rolled back. Which means that the system is available only if both databases are available and the network between them is available, which is exactly the opposite of what a hot standby would be expected to provide.
    2) You most likely want to set up a manual DataGuard-like setup. Clone the database from one machine to another, keep the standby database in managed recovery mode, and copy archived log files from the primary to the standby periodically. You'll have to script that, of course, but that shouldn't be insurmountable.
    3) Basic replication (one-way materialized views) are available in the standard edition, but probably aren't the sort of thing you'd want to use to build a hot standby.

  • Archive Log Gap between Disaster recovery server & Production Server

    Hi
Can anybody provide me the script  to find out the archive log missing on Production Server means that archive log backed up & deleted from the production server & rest of the Archive logs has been shipped on to the DR server. Means it will shot the gap between production server & DR server until that log which has been deleted from the production server , but next logs has been shipped to  the DR server. But rest of the logs only be applied when delete log be restored on the production server & shipped on the DR server.
    thanks.

    Ravi,
The question is how are you getting the archive logs shipped over to your standby database?  If you are doing it via FTP or scripts, then you may want to look at configuring DataGuard to do it for you.  Look at "Setting Up Oracle Dataguard for SAP" at:
    http://www.oracle.com/us/solutions/sap/wp-ora4sap-dataguard11g-303811.pdf
    Good Luck.

  • Goldengate extracting from Archive log

    Dear All,
We are conducting a replication of Oracle Database. Due to high load on Production server, the client is providing us a near DR database server for extraction. This database server is using Oracle Data Guard to be in Sync with Production server. Hence we will be using Archive logs shipped from Production to DR to Extract changed data. I have searched on the Net and read manuals, but I am unable to understand the how to configure OGG for this scenario. I understand that we can used Tranlogoptions parameter to extract data from Archive logs, but since the near DR database is in Mount state, how can we Log in the database using userid /password in extract process. Also we need to have Select any dictionary privileges on the database, but database is in mount state, so how to work on it??
    Awaiting eagerly for the reply.l

For a physical standby, you can configure GG to read the archived standby logs in archive log only (ALO) mode.
ARCHIVEDLOGONLY causes Extract to read from the archived logs exclusively, without querying or validating the logs from system views such as v$log and v$archived_log. This parameter puts Extract into Archived Log Only mode (ALO). For more information, see the Oracle GoldenGate Oracle Installation and Setup Guide.
You can configure the Extract process to read exclusively from the archived logs. This is
known as Archived Log Only (ALO) mode. In this mode, Extract only reads from archived
logs that are stored in a specified location. ALO mode allows Oracle GoldenGate to use
production logs that are shipped over to a secondary database (such as a standby) as the
data source for Oracle GoldenGate. The online logs will not be used. Oracle GoldenGate
will connect to the secondary database to get metadata and other required data as needed.
As an alternative, ALO mode is supported on the production system.
Extract automatically operates in ALO mode if it detects that the database is a physical standby.
Lots of other info in the Oracle install guide.
