15" MBP display goes black spontaneous upon logging in

i recently sent my MBP in for the above problem, and they told that they were "unable to duplicate the problem" when prior to sending in it i could not even use the computer due to the display being black.
now i have the computer back and it was fine for the few days i have had it and i just turned it on now to log in and the screen went black. i powered it off, by pressing down the power button. then powered it on. of course the screen was blue for maybe a second before going black again, so i couldn't log in. so i removed the battery and just used the powere cord and it started up fine?????? what the heck is going on. in just under a year ive had so many problems with this computer, im so ready to call apple tomorrow and have them send me a new one. this is absurd!

  • Cinema display goes black upon resolution change in Windows XP

    Greetings
Earlier today, I updated my ATI X1600 Radeon to the latest Windows Catalyst drivers and to the Catalyst Control Center from ATI. Even since, whenever a Windows application (games, in this case) tries to change the resolution on my external Apple Cinema Display (designated as the main monitor in the ATI Catalyst Control Center, with the MacBook Pro display disabled), the display goes black, and the monitor power lamp starts to flash.
If I unplug the external Cinema Display from my MacBook Pro, my MacBook Pro display activates, and displays whatever it is I was trying to launch, so the problems is somehow related to the Cinema Display, even if the new drivers are causing it.
This happens regardless of my Catalyst Control Center settings, such as scaling the lower resolution to fit the screen, or keeping it the original size, with black borders around. The problem does not occur when I launch games using 1600 x 1024, the Cinema Display's native resolution.
Any ideas what might be causing it, and how to resolve it?

Update on my situation: when I tried to change the resolution manually in Windows, I encountered the same problem. Now, whenever I connect the Cinema Display to my MacBook Pro, the same thing occurs: the screen goes black, and the power lamp starts flashing, even though I've changed back to 1600 x 1024.

  • MacBook Pro retina display goes black while outputting video through HDMI to external monitor??

I frequently connect my MacBook Pro to my 42inch Panasonic TV to watch movies/videos. I use VLC media player for all my playback. The problem I'm running into is that when I put VLC media player into fullscreen mode on my external display, my retina display goes black (I can still see the finder bar at the top and when I mouse down the dock appears but the rest of the display shows all black. If I click on Safari it will open but I can't see it on my MacBook display unless I take the external display out of fullscreen mode.
I would still like to be able to do things on my MacBook while video is playing. I've played around with the display settings but they're pretty limited and I can't figure out how to get it to work the way I'd like. I've seen people having up to 3 or 4 displays hooked up, I'm just trying to hookup one. I would consider this a severe limitation of OS X if I'm not able to separately manage the displays. Hopefully there is a setting or something I'm just not seeing. Thanks.

Yeah, fullscreen mode still doesn't play nice with multiple monitors. The common workaround is to stretch the window out to the edges of the screen instead of using actual fullscreen mode.

Have most recent macbook pro connected to thunderbolt via thunderbolt cable.  Occasionally when I close my laptop the thunderbolt display goes black and does not come back on---even in response to keyboard.  Help

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

    I hope this helps!

  • Run iPhoto slideshow on 2nd display without 1st display going black?

    Hi there,
I can't seem to find a clear answer on this one. I have just connected a 2nd display to my mac mini via the thunderbolt connection. When I put iPhoto 11 onto the 2nd display desktop and run a slideshow it plays on the 2nd screen but my 1st screen goes black, which isnt ideal as I want to be able to carry on working on my 1st screen.
Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black? If not, is there a way around this by using other software?
I have the 2nd display set up in extended mode not mirror.
    I am running OSX 10.9.2.
    Many thanks,
    Andy.

Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black?
    No.
There may well be, but it's not possible with Aperture either.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • Apple TV stops streaming via AirPlay when iPhone 6 Display goes black

    Hi,
when my iPhone gets locked and the Display goes black (standby) after 2 Minutes, my AirPlay stream to my Apple TV 3. Gen stops playing. Only when i set the standby/lock time time to never instead of 2 Minutes (and the screen is on all the time) the Stream wont stop.
Sometimes the stream does not stop, wenn my iPhone Screen goes black.
This also happens with an iPad Mini or using an Lightning to HDMI Adapter instead the Apple TV.
    I have no idea why.
    Please help.
    Best regards

On a sidenote, I also have an ipad and normally homesharing with the ipad works fine, but after having an apple tv incident, I have to restart the mac for homesharing to work with the ipad

  • Display goes black randomly

I purchased the notebook barely 16 days ago, and after a few days I noticed that the display goes black for a second or two randomly i.e it doesn't happen while holding the notebook in any certain way or something. The dislay goes black anywhere while playing games, music, videos or simply anytime. Also now there's some flickering in the lower part of the display. It happens with no approx time gap.  I asked HP's Chat Support to help me out of this, they tried to uninstall and have a clean install of display drivers, that didnt work. Then they said they'll assign the nearest Physical service centre for an onsite visit and that some one will contact me, but waiting since almost 4-5 days this didnt happen. For the past two days I regularly ask HP's Support team about the promised visit but they keep on saying that today you'll recieve a call positively.  The problem has escalated to such an extent that it interferes with my studies, work and daily use. This all has cost me alot of time and money and it's all due to your faulty product and carelessness. I would like you to help me in this regard, asap, if it is at all possible for you !! Edit : Before you ask, everything's updated to it's latest version. and I don't have an external Monitor.

  • Display goes black when in a call

I have noticed an annoying feature with my Nokia N8: The display goes black when in a call (holding the phone to my ear). When the call is finished I have a difficulty to close the call. Is this a Nokia special feature for saving battery that can be turned off or is it an error?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hey Is1987Is! Sorry you are having this problem.
It is normal behaviour for your screen to go black when held near your ear.
Is your screen just not coming back on once you finish your call or take it away from your ear?
Incase it is a bit more of a serious case of your phone having a black screen after hanging up a call. You can try this troubleshoot.
To make sure your proximity sensor is not over sensitive causing your phone to have a black screen, during incoming and outgoing calls aswell as alarms.
First thing is try to verify sunlight/IR oversensitivity with a typical desk lamp.
This could be done by making a phone call (or setting alarm) and putting the phone under the desk lamp when the phone is ringing (or alarm activated).
If phone is oversensitive to IR, display should go blank caused by IR radiation from desk lamp.
If this is the case you should take your phone to your Local Nokia Care Point, and they will be able to fix it for you!
I hope this helps, let me know if your phone goes black screen during an incoming calls when you test it under the lamp!

  • 21.5 iMac display goes black

brand new out of the box iMac purchased late 09... ran fine until i did the updates ... now the system acts like it goes to sleep but wont wake up. display goes black. restarts are iffy at best. i was able to get the system back up by unplugging for an hour and then restart. it did go down again. Hardware problem? or video driver issue? oh yeah ... display will flicker sometimes and seems dim also. any help appreciated.

    Hi rjonsson;
I suggest you take it back to Apple and ask them to fix it. You really should not have to mess with fixing a brand new machine. Beside if this turns into a repeating problem you have started the documentation trail.

  • Why is the display going black when editing in FCP X?

Here's a tough one that the Genius Bar couldn't make heads or tails of:
I'm using FCP X to edit some videos, as I have for a few years now. Upon launching Final Cut Pro it loads my timelines etc as it always does, but sometime soon after (either while waiting for background tasks to run, or when click on an event) the screen goes black. I've replicated the same problem with multiple external drives, projects, etc.
And yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP X following the specific instructions on the Apple.com website. No such luck. Taking it to the Apple Store resulted in a lot of head scratching, confirmation that something is definitely wrong, and a then this Support Forum question.
Anybody heard of something as bizarre as this? I'm hoping so. Thanks.
    My Gear:
    MacBook Pro w Retina Display
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
    Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1
multiple external drives (Lacie, WD, etc)

What do you mean by saying the screen is going black?
Do you mean the whole monitor or just the Viewer in FCP X?
Try these general troubleshooting strategies  even if you've already done them.
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
If these 3 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Display goes black with external monitor

I teach and use the Macbook pro used in classroom hooked up to a projector with my dvi/vga connector. After about ten minutes of playing a DVD, the macbook's screen goes black. Movie keeps playing, can get the DVD control on screen BUT the screen on macbook pro never comes back. Plus the cursor, mouse on the projected screen doesn't function. Have to eject DVD, and restart the computer. Very annoying. Had the problem beofre, called apple, reinstalled system software. Was better until yesterday. Any ideas"?
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Mine is doing the same thing with a new 20" Cinema Display. Apple support got me to reset the power manager and zap the PRAM (the old standbys), but no joy. They acknowledged they know about the problem and are working towards a solution, but that was the limit of the conversation.
My tech guys thought it might be when attaching an external keyboard and monitor it might be putting the MBP display into closed lid mode, but using only the MBP's keyboard did not prevent the problem.
For me it tends to happen when I'm taxing the processor with PhotoShop or some other workhorse program. iTunes, too. I use dual display, not mirroring.
Additionally, moving stuff to the black MBP screen will cause a hard crash. Even the spinning beachball of death freezes. So be warned, save those open files before rebooting (Apple's current 'fix').
Coincidentally, my top right fan assembly was clicky/whiny right out of the box. Got that replaced under warranty and still have the display shut off issue. I had mused it might be the fan not working was causing the video processor to overheat and shut off, but no such luck.
Looking forward to a firmware/system update.

  • MBP Screen goes black and then restores.  NVIDIA graphics card issue?

    I've got a mid-2007 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, running 10.6.2.
Over the past couple of days I am having random losses of video screen. I will be on a webpage, doing nothing with it, and the screen will go momentarily black. It normally lasts for a few seconds, then restores. Nothing I do seems to affect the blacking out or the restoration.
I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card.
Any suggestions / input on whether I am experiencing the failure? FWIW, computer is still under Applecare.
    Thanks

    See this KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I have similar issues with my MBP. However there is also a widespread issue on the forums in which the trackpad and keyboard stops responding, and it may be difficult to tell if the problem is loss of video or loss of input ability when the display goes to sleep automatically. I'm currently in this boat. I'm not quite sure if I have a video problem of if this is the issue with the trackpad/keyboard connection.
The video card issue appears that apple will pay for out of warranty but they are not addressing the widespread problem with trackpad and keyboard loss of function and if you are out of warranty you are out of luck.

  • Mac mini 2011 display going black

I just got my new core i7 + SSD 2011 Mac mini. I noticed during initialization of Lion and during a reinstall of Lion that my screen would flash to black for a second or two. A few days after installing Lion I still get this random flash a black a few times throughout my sessions. It usually only does it 2 or three times withing 10 minutes of turning on the the computer, then it seems to be fine. One time it flashed a few times and then the display went all distorted and pixelated. To fix it I ended up having to disconnect my 24" Cinema display and reconnect it. This whole display issue is really annoying.
I found this so I hope Apple is working to fix this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15843631#15843631

Shutdown the Mini, turn off the display, disconnect and reconnect all of your power and display connections ensuring that they are fully seated and snug.
It could also just be that the display going to sleep and then rewaking.
    1. Go to: System Preference / Energy Saver and check to see if your Display Sleep slider didn't maybe get set to under 3 minutes.
    2. Go to: System Preferences / Exposé & Spaces / Exposé and see if there isn't a Hot Corner set to "Put Display to Sleep" that you pointer might be going to.
