1522 AP's and 3350 MSE

Hi,
I need to upgrade my location appliance. I am currently running a 2710, WCS version 6.0.196.0 and 21 4402 controllers on 6.0.182.0. There are 11 sites spread accross Canada and the Northern US. There are going to be a minimum of 4 more this year. The majority of my sites are outdoors and use 1522's. I have some indoor sites on 1242's, the biggest being an office building with 32 radios.
The problem I have is I've hit the limit on clients that can be tracked on the 2710. For the record, I don't run rogue detection on all radios. I spread it out so that I don't get too many overlaps. I am looking at moving to the 3350 but see that the WIPS software does not include 1522's. Does that mean I lose my ability to detect disassociation floods etc if I go to the new platform? Or, does the context aware software still provide some notification?
Thanks,
Dan

Scott,
Thanks very much for the reply. So if I just install a new 3350 I will still have my standard suite of signature attacks? I will still have triangulation of client devices available to show me client locations on my WCS Maps etc?
If so then I will go with the base 3350 and if required install any additional software down the road. I'm a little panicky right now as time is short and I have hit the limits of the 2710. Trying to budget the new MSE.
Thanks again,
Dan

    Hi,
I cannot integrate Virtual MSE 7.3.101 with my Prime Infrastructure 1.2
After I setup MSE via its wizard, I make a change on WCS username and password.
When I try to integrate MSE with Prime Infrastructure, Prime notify me about the mismatch username/password.
Both systems are fresh install on my UCS C220 M3.
Does anyone has the same issue as me ?

  • MSE and WLC Operation

    Hello,
I need to develop a solution of wIPS, but I'm not sure about the compatibility between the MSE and the WLC. My WLC is in 7.6.100 version and the MSE is 3310 model. Reviewing documentation, the MSE can only update until 7.3 version. Somebody knows if the version between wlc and mse must match, or which are the restrictions. Additionally, i can use Prime I or WSC, we have both systems.

but I'm not sure about the compatibility between the MSE and the WLC.
    Here is the compatibility information.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html#pgfId-148604
My WLC is in 7.6.100 version
You should consider upgrade this to min 7.6.130.0  as that is the stable code of 7.6.x software train.
MSE is 3310 model. Reviewing documentation, the MSE can only update until 7.3 version. Somebody knows if the version between wlc and mse must match, or which are the restrictions.
It does not need to be exact match between WLC & MSE versions. Refer release notes of each product & version, it will listed the new features added in each releases. Since MSE 3310 not supporting 7.3.x onward, I would plan for MSE migration anyway. You can go with VM in later versions of MSE & no need to buy hardware for that.
Additionally, i can use Prime I or WSC, we have both systems
Go with Prime as WCS is not supported any longer. What's the reason still keeping the WCS ?

  • WEP and the 1522

Can the the ap1522 work with legacy wgb350s using 64 or 128 bit WEP or no encryption at all.

    Hi Gordon,
    This will not work due to the fact that the 1522 is LWAPP and the 350 is Autonomous;
    Q. Is the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series compatible with the Cisco Aironet 1400 Series and Cisco Aironet 1300 Series?
    A. The Cisco Aironet 1500 Series is LWAPP-based and will not interoperate with autonomous Cisco Aironet wireless bridges or access points such as the Cisco Aironet 1400 Series and the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in autonomous mode. In addition, it will not bridge to the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in lightweight mode because in lightweight mode, the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series operates only as an access point (and not a bridge). The Cisco Aironet 1500 Series will, however, co-exist in the same WLAN as a Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in lightweight mode (for example, within the same wireless LAN controller or across multiple controllers within the same mobility group), allowing a wireless client to roam seamlessly between the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series on the outdoor network and 1300 Series Access Points on the indoor network.
Cisco IOS Software-based APs (autonomous APs) that are configured as WGBs associate only with Cisco IOS Software-based APs. They cannot associate with Lightweight AP Protocol (LWAPP)-based APs. Cisco APs that are converted to lightweight mode also do not support WGB associations. This is because LWAPP devices cannot communicate with non-LWAPP devices at all.

  • T61 DVD/CD-RW drive fails to read and crashes

Hello Everyone, I hope people still visit this area of the forums!
I've highlighted and bolded the symptoms to make them easier to find.
I recently purchased a T61 6457-C15 on eBay, and have been in the proccess of setting up and customizing it to suit my tastes. When I recieved the laptop, it looked as though Windows had been restored to original factory state, plus some free software, so I proceeded under that assumption. First I used Windows Update to download all the updates that it could find including IE8. I wanted to have an anti-virus program running on my computer before I used a browser to access the internet. I ran IE8 and went straight to the Microsoft Security Essentials website and downloaded the Install program. At this point I tried to remove the pre-installed and expired Norton Internet Security using the built-in uninstall, but it failed. A message box popped saying that I needed to put the Norton installation disc in the CD-ROM drive so that the uninstall program could find a Norton support file. My computer did not come with any discs, but my mothe had bought Norton 2008, so I took that disc and put it in the drive. The drive started spinning right away, and the uninstall program found the file it was looking for in a few seconds. The support file directed me to the Norton website to get their removal tool, which removed Norton from my system in short order. Afterwards, I ran the Microsoft Security Essentials install program and got MSE running on my computer before doing anything else.
Then I went to the Lenovo support website and had it auto-detect my system. That took me to the support page for my system, where I went to the "Downloads and Drivers" page. I downloaded Access Connections and ThinkVantage Toolbox for Vista 32-bit (my OS is Vista Business 32-bit). I then used Lenovo System Update to retrieve all the updates it deemed neccessary from Lenovo, including those for itself and system components, both software and firmware. There were 35 or more updates suggested, and I trusted the software, so I started downloading them all. I'm not sure, but I think that a DVD/CD-RW drive update was included in the list, but I can't remember if it was auxiliary software, drivers or firmware. After Lenovo System Update was convinced that it had all the neccessary updates, I downloaded Revo Uninstaller and set about removing uneccassary and unwanted programs from my computer and trimming the startup list. I did not touch any Windows or ThinkVantage components, and I searched each program online, so I'm sure that I did not delete or disable any drivers or system files, or anything from Lenovo. I mainly removed Apple products and non-functional software from my system, including an integrated camera driver (my system does not have an integrated camera) and third-party programs that were already missing files or otherwise inoperable when I got my computer. Up to this point I had been using a gigabit ethernet connection to download software; I had not used the DVD/CD-RW drive except for the one time I specified earlier.
Now that I had my system set up to my liking, including personalization and power settings, I started to install my first program: Command & Conquer the First Decade from a DVD-ROM. When I put the disc in the drive and closed it, it took a few seconds for the drive to spin up, and once it did, it was constantly running at high speed and I could hear the reader constantly moving back and forth quickly. After a few minutes the disc's install menu finally appeared, so I clicked on the install button. I waited several minutes but nothing happened, so I tried to view the contents of the drive by going to My Computer > DVD/CD-RW drive (D, right clicking and selecting explore from the menu options. When I did that, the address bar of the My Computer window started to fill up with a dark gray progress bar and said "loading (D", I think with the drive or disc name after it. After it took several minutes to fill completely, nothing happened. I waited a few more minutes to see if anything would change, (nothing did,) I clicked on the X button in the top right corner of the window to close it. A few minutes and clicks later, the My Computer window was labeled as (not responding), and the window itself became grayed-out. I started Task Manager and tried to close the My Computer window, but the entire Windows Desktop disappeared along with it, saying that it would attempt to restart. Even Task Manager became non-responsive and quit after closing My Computer. After a few minutes of staring at my background (and nothing else), I ejected the disc, and Windows Desktop reappeared immediately and acted as if nothing had ever been wrong.
I checked Device Manager, but neither the DVD/CD-RW drive nor any of the ATA controllers were flagged; in fact they all said they were working properly with up-to-date drivers. I ran the ThinkVantage Toolbox diagnostics on the drive using a data CD, a music CD and a different DVD-ROM, but in each case the drive failed the tests and a message box popped-up saying that the discscould not be read because they were scratched or there was a hardware problem. I checked the discs both before I put them in and after I took them out, and they were not scratched; also, all of the discs are publisher-manufactured from a software or music company. I restarted my computer, booted the Rescue and Recovery option and Ran PC-Doctor from there. I ran the same drive read tests with the same failure results. The entire time the drive was behaving the same way it had when it first failed to read a disc. Next I removed and cleaned the drive both inside and out with a can of compressed air; I also cleaned the ultrabay itself. Finally I tried fixing the problem with Microsoft Fix It, but when it automatically ejected the drive and i put a disc in, the disc became trapped in the drive and Windows froze up like before. I had to restart Windows twice (once with a BSOD) in order to get the disc out. When the disc was removed the computer went back to normal operation once again.
Please help me, my DVD/CD-RW drive is a Matshi ta UJDA775, my operating system is Windows Vista Business and my T61's model number is 6457-C15. I have tried all the troubleshooting fixes and none have worked. I have tried updating drivers and using diagnostic software and they have not worked. I have tried disabling drag-to-disc burning and it has not worked. I have treid removing and cleaning the drive and that has not solved my problem. I did notice that the driver for the "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI controller" is the only related driver that can be rolled back, so maybe that might fix it. I'm also wondering if a firmware change caused this, and if so, if there is any way I can undo that. The only other fix I've heard of that I haven't tried is editing the registry, but I'm hesitant to do that. I haven't tried booting from the CD drive because I have no bootable CDs and I'm worried that my computer might get stuck in that mode. I'm hoping that someone can tell me what I can do to try to fix this problem, preferably without wrecking my computer. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
P.S. Just adding a note; I went through both the Microsoft and Lenovo Update histories and the only related updates I could find were: ThinkPad BIOS update, Easy Eject utility, Intel Matrix Storager Manager driver for Windows (32-bit), and maybe one of the two Intel Chipset Support for Vista updates. I tried rolling back the AHCI driver but it had no effect.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, my problem is fixed, and here's how. I had some trouble figuring out how to contact Lenovo technical support; online options directed me to the IBM support website, which was clearly designed for businesses. Selecting the "Call technical support" option on the Lenovo support website and then choosing my country gave me a 24/7 hotline number. After waiting about five minutes on hold, a nice young fellow by the name of "Tyrese" answered (I maybe misspelling his name), but the connection was so bad that we could barely hear each other. Although he semed eager to help, when I told him my problem the first things he suggested were simple, like cleaning the drive, However, when I told him all of my efforts, described above, to fix the problem myself and read him the log from the Rescue and Recovery diagnostic program, after he checked the error codes against his computer database he promptly replied that the only fix was to send out a new drive. I was happy to have gotten such a successful resolution to a support call in less than fifteen minutes; apparently, all the work I had done trying to solve the problem myself had paid off in a way. Unfortunately, although I had tried to spell out my address for him, some of it got left off of the address label, which caused some trouble in receiving the new drive. Once I got it, I installed it using the uninstall & remove (old drive), shut down, start up, insert & install (new drive) method that I referenced earlier in this topic. I've been using the new drive since then without any trouble, so I guess that the only fix was to replace the drive. Also, I noticed that the new drive was a Hitachi, perhaps a T400/410 or T500/510 Ultrabay Slim drive, which should help me avoid the problems that other users were having with the older Matshi-ta drives. I hope this description helps anyone else having a problem with the optical drives on the T61/61p.

  • MSE is unreachable on WCS until Java program is killed

    Hi
I have a problem with my 2700 series Wireless Location Appliance. It works for about a week, then suddenly WCS shows the device as unreachable. If I kill the Java program and then perform a shutdown, it works for about a week before the same fault occurs.
    Has anyone experienced this before?

  • MSE License problem

I see an advice about we have reached 75% of clients trackin.
It says that our license can tracking 7000clientes.
Según lo que indica la web de Cisco la licencia del mse es ahora por APs no por clientes. No entiendo porque sale ese mensaje.
In Cisco web I see that  MSE license is AP-based now.
"With MSE Release 7.4 and later, licenses are access point (AP)-based and not endpoint-based. In order to accommodate this, new location service licenses are introduced.
There are two levels of licenses under Location Services License, Base Location and Advanced Location.
    Base Location License
The Base Location License is equivalent to the CAS license in the earlier software versions and is used for endpoint tracking. The license count is based on the number of APs supported.
Note: This is referred to as Location Services License in software release 7.4. In software release 7.5 and later, it is called the Base Location License.
The license format is L-LS-100AP. Here 'LS' refers to Location Services and '100AP' refers to 100 AP count."
I don´t understand why I see the 75% clients reached message.
The MSE is virtual and the installed version is 7.6.
    The licenses are
    L-MSE-7.0-K9
    y 7 PRO-L-LS-100AP
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your previous answer.
    I have a license for 700 APs (7 L-LS-100AP) and L-MSE-7.0-K9 license too.
In license Tab, I see this information too:
Service       Platform Limit by AP            Type                                                          Installed limit by AP                 License Type
CAS           2500                     CAS Elements                          700                         Permanent
wIPS          6000                     wIPS Monitor Mode APs             10                         Evaluation                                                             wIPS Local Mode APs                10                         (120 days left)
MC             2500                     Mobile Concierge                        10                          Evaluation
                                                                                                                                      (120 days left)
ANA           2500                      Location Analytics                       10                          Evaluation
                                                                                                                                       (120 days left)
I installed Cisco MSE Standard Virtual Appliance.
Now the number of  registerd clients is 3000 or 4000 and 500 APs.
If Cisco says in its documentation:
*With software version 7.4 the licensing model has been changed from client-based to AP-based. The total clients supported on MSE has also been increased from 18,000 on MSE software release 7.3 to 25,000 on MSE software release 7.4. BL/AL refers to Base Location/Advanced Location.
Why  do I see the message "License usage for Client Elements of the Context Aware Service has exceeded its threshold of 75% of the installed license count of 7000" if I have 4000 registered clients?
    Could it be a bug?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi!
During yesterday BT netprotect updated itself and I thought all was ok. Turned on the PC this morning to find a windows message saying security was at rislk and firewall and anti viral software were not turned on.
Cliked 'turn on' and seemed OK but go to BT netprotect to check and it is is still red (indicating action needed). I click on the 'activate' and nothing happens.
I use BT infinity (option 3) and windows 7. Have read McAfee's forum and can't see a fix.

Well after trying everything I could think of to resolve this, nothing worked.
Uninstalled BTNP from this laptop and installed MSE (with McA siteadvisor) - WOW, the laptop is ruddy quick now
Will be dropping BTNP from the other laptop and the desktop in due course.

  • MSE Not Showing Clients After Upgrade to 7.6.100.0

I've upgraded our 5508 WLC's to ver 7.6.100.0.  I've also upgraded our NCS to 2.0, and our MSE to 7.6.100.0.  I now can no longer see clients on the MSE map for our sites.  I've added the WLC to the MSE syncronization.  When I select "show clients" it says 0 of 0 found.  I know I have clients connected, since I can see them in the WLC.  Is this a licensing issue?  Thanks for your help!

Make sure that NMSP is up.

On WLC console, use the show auth-list command.
The following example shows from WLC console that there is no location server available:
In order to manually add the MSE and establish a NMSP connection to WLC, complete these steps:
On the MSE console, run the cmdshell command, and then the show server-auth-info command.
This example shows the MAC address and the keyhash to be used for adding to the WLC.
Run the config auth-list add ssc command, and then run the show auth-list.
This example shows that the MSE was added to the WLC (manually).
On the NCS, confirm that the NMSP connection shows Active.

  • WCS MSE Help

I’m trying to synchronize one of our switches with the WCS/MSE (Version 6 on the WCS).  I’ve added it onto the WCS and the MSE says it synchronizes properly but when I go into the SERVICES/MOBILITY SERVICES and look at the switch it is just showing the IP address.  It’s not showing any of the ports or any information at all on the switch.  I have the RW snmp string for the switch.  Any ideas?

Well that is a complex question but let's start with making sure that you meet the requirements for it to work:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/wcs/6.0/configuration/guide/6_0admin.html#wpxref43135
    Switch Port Trace
The Switch Port Trace page allows you to run a trace on detected rogue access points on the wire.
To correctly trace and contain rogue access points, you must correctly provide the following information.
•Reporting APs—A rogue access point has to be reported by one or more managed access points.
•AP CDP Neighbor—Access point CDP neighbor information is required to determine the seed switches.
•Switch IP address and SNMP credentials—All switches to be traced must have a management IP address and SNMP management enabled. You can add network address based entries instead of only adding individual switches. The correct write community string must be specified to enable/disable switch ports. For tracing, read community strings are sufficient.
•Switch port configuration—Trunking switch ports must be correctly configured. Switch port security must be turned off.
•Only Cisco Ethernet switches are supported.
•Switch VLAN settings must be properly configured.
•CDP protocol must be enabled on all switches.
•An Ethernet connection must exist between the rogue access point and the Cisco switch.
•You should have some traffic between rogue access points and the Ethernet switch.
•The rogue access point must be connected to a switch within the max hop limit. The default hop count is 2, and the maximum is 10.
•If SNMPv3 is chosen, use the context option and create one for each VLAN, in addition to the one for the main group (which is required for non-VLAN-based MIBs).
Follow these steps to specify options for switch port tracing.
    Using switch port tracing:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/wcs/6.0/configuration/guide/6_0ctrlcfg.html#wpmkr1083367
After you meet all requirements the logs are your best bet for determining why it is not working.  They are usually pretty good at leading you to the problem.
You would go to Administration > Logging and uncheck Status Polling, Configuration, SNMP Mediation, MSE/Location Servers, XML
Mediation, Navigator, Reports and Database Administration and change the message level to TRACE and click submit.  Go back and recreate the issue
and then go back to the logging area and download the logs.
If you get the logs right after the test it should be in the wcs-0-0.log file and you will want to go from the bottom up and search for something like "
Switch port tracing failed".  Around there will be why it failed.

  • More granular geo-location from the MSE?

I have a WCS 7.0.xx and a MSE 7.0.xx installed and working fine.
I have managed to get an geo-location answer from the MSE, but it  appears like it has low accuracy. Eg: 63:24:59N 10:24:9E. As far as I  can see, It contains only degrees, minutes and seconds, not decimal  seconds. If I remember correctly a second equals to about 30 meters in  north/south direction (and from about the same to 0 in east/west  depending on where it is placed between equator and the north/south  pole).
Is it possible to increase the number of decimals, so it does not lose more accuracy than it needs?

    Hmm.. `gpspipe` gives me:
gpspipe: could not connect to gpsd localhost:2947, Unknown error -6(-6)
    And `gpsd` gives me:

Do I need to be root for these applications? Alternatively, could I maybe just grab the timezone from /etc/localtime and use that? (though I guess that doesn't get close enough on longitude...)
You have to start gpsd from systemctl.  And you can plug/unplug gps devices at will, so it can be enabled in systemctl whether or not an actual gps is always available.

  • MSE Recovery, Licensing Problem

Hi All, in a customers MSE 3310 one Harddisk failed. The Customer tried to boot it with a Rescue Linux and took a Backup from the 2nd HD (not with the WCS). After RMA his Licenses are lost and the MSE is running now in Evaluation Mode. He tried to install the Old .lic File (taken from the Backup) but failed with a "Platform UDI doesn't match licensing file UDI." message. The Customer said that he hasnt registerd a PAK or didnt get any lic Files,  i think that there is an Option to purchase the MSE with all Licenses needed.
The Question is, how can we get the MSE work with all original Licenses (1000 CAS, 10 wips)? Is there a way to do that via the TAC Licensing Team?
    Any Help welcome.
    Regards, Michael

Use the following URL if you have the PAK or licenses associated with your CCO id "http://www.cisco.com/go/license". If not, please open an SR with TAC so that it can get routed to licenses team. The UDI are different since you have a replacement unit and requires the licenses to be re-hosted with the current UDI.

Hi All, just thought I would share this in case it helps anyone.
Installed BT NetProtect on two laptops and a tower PC about a year ago. Been ok on the tower, but have had problems on the laptops. One is my daughters and isn't available at the moment to investigate further but my own laptop started to have real problems culminating with a blue screen and the laptop stuck in a boot cycle that only safe mode could get out of. I had previously been having problems that event viewer had identified as problems with mcshield.exe so in safe mode I uninstalled NetProtect and installed MSE and so far all seems ok.
Prior to all this I had had frequent issues with failed shutdowns and freezes, again that the event log had invariably identified as problems with Mcafee. I have to say that I have not had similar problems on the tower PC that I use for quite high power games such as running FSX with TileProxy, Real Weather simulation etc. So I suspect that Mcafee is possibly not so good on laptops. I did find that the problems only seemed to ensue when the lid was closed and opened a few times or other users had logged in by switch user, as you do during an average day. Shutting down the laptop fully each time it wasn't in use seemed to improve things but what a pain! The tower PC does not get used like this so I have concluded that maybe Mcafee doesn't deal well with laptops being used in the way that my family tended to use it.
So far so good with MSE but looking around because it seems to have varying reviews!
    All the best.
PS: In the above I have used both NetProtect and Mcafee to describe the same product, appol's for any confusion!

BT Netprotect can cause problems on some computers. It is also a resource hog and can massively slow your computer down, especially during a scan. My advice would be to remove it from your computers and install one of the many free antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast or AVG.
I have used all three and personally find AVG better than MSE.

  • Lightning Arrestors for Aironet 1522

    Hi,
In ordering guide, 1522 are designed to withstand power surges on the AC power cord up to 4 kV as per EN61000-4-5 Level 4 & lightning arrestors are not required.
What does it means? I've install the AP outdoor & using ant58g10ssa antenna. I'm afraid the AP will struck by lightning

From an electrical engineering perspective assume we have 3 points of entry to the 1522, power, data and antenna. Each of these can transmit a lightning surge to downstream devices ie a switch or an upstream device the ap.
Generally the antenna will be the most vulnerable point of the installation to lightning strikes. If there is no surge suppression between the antenna and the ap then the ap can be damaged, also it can potentially transmit that surge down the data cabling, assuming the power cabling is protected as you say it should protect in both directions on the power side, but not always.
This probably means it can manage surges into the ap from the power side from a strike to transmission equipment and the transient overvoltages that may be caused.
Worst cast scenario your antenna gets a direct hit, the ap fails, the voltage is transmitted down the data cabling and takes out the 6500 its directly connected to! Nobodies going to say you done a great job and were just unlucky and you wont be winning any popularity contests
Its a question of risk, with an inline arrestor on the antenna cable you are protecting your ap etc. If its on a building and not the highest point its unlikely to get a direct hit. If its on a lighting column and the antenna is the highest point its possible. How much lightning do you get?
    Not sure thats any help!
