16:9 NOT to letterbox in HDTV?
Hi,
I should be able to do this . . . and CAN'T! It's making me crazy!! We have 2 Canon XL-2 cameras. We now are shooting in 16x9. (Or we're going to - depending on this answer!!)
Bottom line - when we create a DVD in iDVD - it letterboxes perfectly when viewed on a 4x3 television. As it should! Perfect.!
BUT . . . when viewed on an HDTV, or a 16x9 television - it STILL LETTERBOXES! I thought it's NOT supposed to do that??? I thought on a widescreen television set - it should take up the full screen, because it already IS 16x9! Why letterbox it on a widescreen TV? Feels like I'm gettin' cheated on real estate space.
In FCPro, we keep timeline sequence setting to our normal default - NTSC-DV. (Someone from the Apple Store told us to set it - thru Easy Setup - to "NTSC-Anamorphic - but THAT caused all kinds of problems when imported into iDVD, so we DON'T do that. It kept the picture looking squished 4x3 in iDVD, unless we ran it thru Anamorphicizer.) The video looks perfect (widescreen) in the canvas and viewer in FCPro -
So shouldn't it look "full screen" automatically on a widescreen television, and look letterboxed on 4x3 (which it does)? Is this a setting we're supposed to set our DVD player (hooked to the TV) to? Is there a setting we're supposed to change our widescreen TV to?
Thanks - if anybody knows this simple question that we SHOULD know!

Macbook Pro 17 Mac OS X (10.4)
Larry:
I don't know about iDVD but If you author your DVD in DVDSP and set all your tracks and menus as Display Mode: 16:9 letterbox you'll get the automatic letterbox in 4:3 TVs and full screen in 16:9 ones.
Of course your sequence setting in FCP must be adjusted to Anamorphic.
But be aware that some settings in your DVD player and TV can override those settings.
Hope that helps !

Nadav.Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at some of the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

New Mac Mini, Not so new LCD HDTV Monitor, no mac support
I have been attempting to set up a Mac Mini with a Maxent LCD 26" HD TV I can't get either the RGB or DVI-D input to accept signal. I have purchased DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX_X. Maybe they could work, but I can't get a signal to stay on long enough to change the settings as listed in other posts. I have tried booting in safe mode as DisplayConfigX instructions suggest. But still only am able to see the screen until gear starts spinning with apple logo, resolution changes spontaneously to one that I suppose is unsupported and I get the unsupported display and a beautiful blank blue screen. I tried manually inputting the resolutions the monitor manual lists, while connected with an lcd pc monitor. But I can't get the Maxent LCD TV monitor to stay on. It appears that if I could get the Mac Mini to send this resolution signal to the Maxent I would be able to delete any unneeded settings and that would be it.
Perhaps Tom Fussy can help me.I have been at this for over two weeks now. So I have become super frustrated. Of course Maxentusa.com offers no Mac support. But state that if Mac mini is supposed to work with PC that it should work with my Mac Mini. My LCD TV is about 6 months old I could still return it for maybe a Sharp Aquos, if that $300 dollar more TV would work. I am happy with the Maxent otherwise. Keeping it, and having it work with Mac Mini Is my choice. Of course Apple offers no support for the Maxent monitor and directed me here. This is my first discussion group post. School me if I have not followed the rules completely.I was able to get the settings for Maxent using Gregory's software to force 640x480. Here are my settings

Letterboxing not wanted -- how to omit?
Hi everyone, I've searched the forum and can't seem to find an answer to my question.
I am using Final Cut Pro X to produce a movie that will only be used on an iPad 3.
Because this movie will never be viewed on any other device, I do not want letterboxing -- I want the movie to fill the entire iPad screen. The letterboxing eats up a lot of space at the top and bottom.
I have tried creating my movie using various formats and resolutions. No matter which options I select, it looks the same when I play the movie on an iPad -- a hefty unused black strip at the top and bottom.
I should note that this movie is actually just photos, titles, and transitions -- no video. Since I can scale and crop photos, it seems to me that there should be some way to fill the entire iPad 3 screen. I just can't figure out the secret.
Any instrux or tips would be sincerely appreciated.I'm going to recind my original suggestion (except for the pan & scan with the aspect change; and I apologize for the confusion) and go for this one:
In the Project Inspector (move out to the project level) and with the project selected (you might want to duplicate the project before changing the resolution)
In the Inspector (just below on the right, specifically), click on the wrench icon ("Modify Project Properties")
Change the Video Properties to Format: 2K Resolution 2048 x 1556
Share > Apple Devices > iPad (you'll notice in the "preview" of the iPad that the video now fills the entire iPad screen.)
Apparently, for HD video formats, FCPX treats all non-square pixels as anamorphic and the output will still be 16:9 for iPad (and letterboxed). I was unable to find a way to force square pixel aspect... (if somebody knows how -- I'd like to hear about it!!!!) If you have Compressor, you can probably force the pixel aspect ratio to square. You can set up a 960x720 square pixel aspect project in Motion, but the above works just fine without having to spend more money on extra software.
Selecting 2K forces a square pixel aspect (or nearly so - it's the "reference resolution"), and if you check the Summary in the Share dialog, the H.264 generated will be 948x720 (but there is no pillarboxing). Another option is to go to 4K 4096x3112 but the result is exactly the same for the 2K settings I outlined.
Apologies again... and I hope this helps. -
Could anyone by any chance help with Letterboxing?
I just did a three camera shoot. 2 Mini DV cameras and a hard drive camera. All three cameras were shot in 16:9 format. I use iMovie for capturing from the DV cameras (I know - a little lazy, but it works so well). After capturing the DV footage, iMovie automatically Letterboxes the files and creates beautiful black lines on the top and the bottom of the screen. It looks great (IMHO) in Final Cut.
Here's where I'm struggling: I use either Capty Mpeg Edit EX or MPEG Streamclip to convert the MOD files off the hard drive camera. I usually simply convert the 4:3 files to MOV files and edit away. I've looked in the FCP manual, I've checked my Training Manuals and I can't seem to come up with a method of converting and letterboxing.
Would anyone know the best method? I'm able to convert the MOD file to a 16:9 MOV file. However, I don't get the Letterbox effect.
Thanks for the help if you're able.No John, I'll try and make it easy to understand.
Your camera settings:
16X9 Widescreen = a rectangle
Standard = a square.
If you play widescreen video on a widescreen tv (HDTV) you will see it full screen.
If you play widescreen video on a standard (4X3) tv, you will see letterboxing.
If you play standard video on a widescreen tv, you will see bars on the left and right.
The reason iMovie is automatically letterboxing is because when you open iMovie, you are greeted by a window asking what format you want (DV, DV Widescreen, HDV, isight, etc) and I think you chose DV instead of DV Widescreen. If you choose Widescreen, all your footage will not be letterboxed. You want to stay away from letterboxing while you edit and let the TV decide how it will look.
If you want to capture in FCP, choose DV Anamorphic for widescreen, and simply DV NTSC for standard.
Make sure you also choose widescreen for when you burn your DVD so you will get a true widescreen DVD.
Comprende?

How to connect my MacBook to HDTV troubleshooting
Hey All,
So i went out and got all of the appropriate cables, i have a late 2008 black MacBook so I got the DVI to HDMI cable, and a separate cable for audio. I hook them all up, go to the proper input on my tv, and all i see is my desktop picture. No icons on the bottom, whenever i run a program (firefox, safari, anything) it does not appear on my HDTV. Do i need to have the MacBook closed (clamshell) after its hooked up and use an external mouse to make this work? what am i missing?
thanks,
chrisWith this adapter. You will also need an HDMI cable.
The Thunderbolt port doubles as a mini DisplayPort on the MBA. -
Letterboxing 16:9 for output to tape
I have a 16:9 DV NTSC project that I need to put on VHS tape for viewing on a 4:3 monitor. I have always created a new 4:3 sequence and placed my 16:9 sequence in it. When I do this now, the image does not get letterboxed. If I command-drag and drop, some of the clips get letterboxed and some do not. Any idea what might be going on or how to fix this? Thanks, Jim
might be something in the Capt's video tutorial that will help

Output device not listed.
What if my sound output device not listed? Trying to connect my MacBookPro 17" (mid 2010) to my tv. Video plays. I have connected digital audio cable to both tv n Mac. When I go to sound in system preference (after cord was plugged in) nothing listed.
Very well stated. And, sometimes I do forget that there is still such a thing as celluloid. Not to mention all the new "K"s that RED is coming up with (aren't they working on something like 27 or 28k now?) When I look at it from that point of view, what you say makes perfect sense.
But then why does preferences>video preview in After Effects give me the "output device" option of IEEE 1394 at NTSC 720x480? This leads me to believe that I could plug a deck into 1394 and get a video preview. If this is the case, then my way of thinking says it should offer other options for "output device".
When I first set up Premiere Pro CS4, the playback settings did not list the HDMI HDTV as an external monitor option. It wasn't until I fooled around with the system's display settings and turned the HDTV into an extention of the desktop that suddenly Premiere Pro listed it as a possible external monitor. So, my history there (and my goofy sense of logic that makes perfect sense to me) has me wondering if a similar sequence of messing with the display options is suddenly going to make AE see the HDTV as an "output device". I am not interested in realtime playback, merely the closest reference possible as to what my video image looks like in HD on an external monitor. I ask "why do I need a separate video card like my old Matrox card, when standard graphics cards these days can handle HD & even have HDMI out?"
Admittedly, I know next to nothing about the complexity & inner workings of software and computer components. Why, I was ready to throw a party just because I successfully installed an additional hard drive in my new computer. I must be like one of my own clients who don't understand why we can't easily separate a voice track from a music track when it's been rendered as one .mp3 file...or why we can't quickly cut a person out of a video layer and make them seamlessly interact with footage of JFK, Zemekis-style. -
I would like to make a Widescreen (16:9) DVD that will play normally on a widescreen T.V.. However I would like to have that same video "cropped" NOT "letterboxed" when played on a standard T.V. (4:3)Is this possible? I'm shooting in widescreen so that I can use HD. Do I need to create a 4:3 project in Premier Pro 2, or can I do a 16:9?
Or let me put it this way. I am shooting video that my customers do NOT want letterboxed. How do I offer a disc with both 16:9 and 4:3 that will not letterbox on a standard 4:3 monitor?
Thanks. If I'm reading the Help for Encore correctly, Encore automatically uses the letterbox regardless of the user settings of the DVD player or T.V..
"There are several different methods used to convert widescreen content to 4:3 format for display. Some of the methods convert the widescreen format to fullscreen format and store the converted fullscreen video on the DVD. The preferred method stores the original widescreen video on the DVD, and the DVD player converts it as necessary during playback to a fullscreen device.
i Adobe Encore DVD stores the original widescreen footage on the disc and instructs the DVD player to letterbox it on playback to a 4:3 TV, regardless of the DVD players settings." -
Mac Mini Incompatible With Philips 30PW9100D/37
I picked up this TV from Target a few months ago at the very affordable price of $699. At that price this is probably the least expensive way to get started with HDTV. The default resolution is 1280 x 720 which looks pretty good using the built in over the air HD Tuner and connecting my PowerBook and MacBook Pro through a DVI to HDMI cable was never a problem. With these computers connected, all I had to do was switch the TV to the HDMI input and they would synch as if the TV were a second display. I thought an Intel Mac Mini would be the perfect permanent addition for a home theater.
Both the PowerBook and my MacBook Pro connected and displayed fine at this resolution:
1280 x 720, 60 Hz (NTSC), Millions
Here are the configurations of these three Macs:
PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 10.4.6
MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, 10.4.6
Mac Mini Intel 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, 10.4.6
As you can see, they each have 2 GB RAM and the latest OS, but the Mac Mini is the only one that does not sync with this TV at its native resolution. I'm not saying the Mini doesn't switch to 1280 x 720 resolution, which it does, it just doesn't sync with the TV at that resolution. I can get it to sync at the lower resolution of 720 x 480 but that's it. I'm using Apple Remote Desktop 3 to log in to the Mini and switch between these resolutions. I've tried SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX but the issue here is not that the Mini won't support a specific resolution, it's that it will not sync with this HDTV at that resolution whereas the PowerBook and MacBook Pro both do.
If anyone has been able to sync this model HDTV with an Intel Mini please let me know. I plan on returning the Mini to the Apple Store in a few days. I'll just keep temporarily connecting my MBP to the HDTV when I want to use Front Row.
300+ Macs Mac OS X (10.4.6) a few Macs at home tooit sounds like you have the tv set set to high for
the mac mini to display which one do you have duo or
single here is why im asking i have found out that
the single cannot display correctly in that
resolution while the duo can due to the increased
memory weird???
I have a duo, as stated above. This is not a resolution issue, it's a timing issue like BSteely says above. I'm going to test this over the next few days and post back here with the results. Although lacking in punctuation, I appreciate your suggestion. Thanks! -
Menu page image and text cut off on burned DVD
I burned a DVD using the travel theme. The project looks fine on my Intel iMac, but when I put the disc into my home DVD player, the menu page, which is not in letterbox format like the rest of the project, has the outer edges cut off and the text and images don't fit the television screen. The rest of the disc looks fine. Any suggestions as to why this happened?

Then there is:
Old Toad's recipe for:
Masking Movies to the TV Safe Area for iDVD
The mask should be 640 x 480 pixels and the movie 514 x 386 (I arrived at this figure by making a snapshot of the TV save area of an iDVD project with Snapz). You can set this size after you’ve joined it with the mask movie with Quicktime Player Pro.
Import the black mask jpg file into iMovie and and export it as a .mov file at the same length as your movie (there may be a way to not have to create a specific length mask for each movie but I haven't found it. If the times do not match the movie file will be synced to the length of the mask movie).
Open the mask movie in QT Player Pro and then open your regular movie and make it the front window of the two. Now you'll need to run a QT Player AppleScript titled "Merge Movie 1 into Movie 2". You can get it from this Apple site: Quicktime Player Scripts.
Then run the script. You can then run the merged movie to check it out. Your movie will be located in the upper lefthand corner of the window when played.
When you open the Movie Properties window from the Window menu for the combined file you’ll see the following:
Video Track 1: the black mask
Video Track 2 : your movie file
Tween track: Have no idea what this is.
Sound track: self explanaotry
Black mask.
To set the size of your movie to the correct size select it in the Properties window and click on Visual Settings pane. Then enter 514 in the first field and hit enter. With the Preserve Aspect Ration box checked the other size will automatically be set.
To center the video track in the center of the mask select the Video Track 2 item and plug in a offset of about: 60 & 40. You'll probably have to play with that to fine tune the centering. Doing the math and subtracting the movie dimensions from the mask dimensions and dividing by two just didn't get it perfectly centered. I'm sure I'm missing something here.
Now save as a new self contained movie after checking the High Quality box at the bottom right.
You can not import it into iDVD for preview and burning. One drawback is that you can't invoke the TV save area for a movie in iDVD to check it out. But you can mark it on the monitor screen while viewing a menu or slideshow and then play the movie to see how close you came.
Since I made this workflow I've found that iDVD NTSC likes 720 x 540 pixels for standard video in NTSC format so you might want to make the black mask that size and adjust the video accordingly. As I said it takes some fiddling.
Does that help?

I recently edited some footage using FCE HD and exported it as a Quicktime file in order to open it in IMovie and burn a DVD in IDVD. Prior to importing it into IMovie, I made sure Windowboxing and Letterboxing was unchecked (I don't need letterboxing the footage again since it was shot in 16:9). To my dismay, after several hours, I noticed that the footage was Windowboxed! What happened? Is this a problem with IMovie HD? I really need help on this one. What can I do? Somebody, anybody, HELP!
I appreciate the quick response however, prior to my post I did a search on windowboxing and came up with the same links you did and it doesn't address or offer a solution to my problem. The video I exported as a quicktime file was not manually letterboxed. It was shot in widescreen mode. Again my issue is not the letterboxing, it's the pillars on the left and right. I would refer to it as pillarboxing except that the video is letterboxed and you can only recognize pillarboxing when letterboxing is not present.
Any future replies, please don't bother "googling". I did that already. Thanks. -
HDMI to RCA 5 "HDMI-to-Component"?
I want to connect my u510 to my HDTV. The TV has the 5 RCA inputs for HDTV -- can I use a standard HTML to RCA 5 conversion cable to display output to my TV?
hi law5432,
This may not work if your HDTV cannot recieve digital signal through the RCA which was typically made for analog
You need to use a converter box like this
http://www.ebay.com.au/bhp/hdmi-rca-converter
Hope this helps

Ok first off yes i did check the forums and could find an accurate answer.
here is the issue:
Intel imac to sharp aqueous plasma( late 2007 early 2008 model)
from imac mini dvi to HDMI adapter then strait to HDMI input on tv.
we are trying to run front row as it is a simple interface, when selecting movie it loads but there is no video on tv and computer but there is audio, however when movie is opened in plain quicktime it plays fine on both tv and computer.
common things i have read are to turn off overscan and reset pram
what else am I missing any help would be greatOne thing to note is that when you run Front Row, the movie plays on the screen that has the menu bar. So if your HDTV is the secondary screen and your iMac's screen is primary (it has the menu bar and dock), the movie will not play on your HDTV using Front Row.
On most video playback apps, you can pick the display to use for full screen by either setting it in preferences, or by simply putting the window with the video on that screen and giving the full-screen command. You can't do that with Front Row (at least as far as I know).
When you run Front Row, do you see the Front Row interface screen? If so, which display has that screen (before you start playing any movie).
Have you tried going to System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab and moving the menu bar from one display to the other? Try using Front Row. If that works as expected now, move the menu bar back (as before) and try using Front Row again. -
Removing or replacing system resolutions
I have finally purchased a replacement mini for use with my HDTV. I've gotten all the custom resolutions (overscan correction) created and installed using DisplayConfigX. It looks great.
My problem is that I can't get rid of those "standard" resolutions that OSX is always providing. Things like 640x480, 640x480 (stretched), 720x480, and 1024x588 (?). These resolutions do not work with my HDTV, and I want to avoid any application attempting to select them (the g-force visualizer for instance). There is a selection in DisplayConfigX to "Disable system resolutions for this monitor" but it doesn't.
Does anyone know of a way I can remove these resolutions or at least prevent them from being selectable through the display preferences?
Mac OS X (10.4.8)SwitchRes X allows you to disable resolutions. As far as I know it doesn't remove them. It just doesn't allow them to be selected. I haven't actually used that feature so I can't confirm that it works as advertised. I am just noting that it is there.
