24FPS to 25FPS TELECINE WORKFLOW

Hey there -
Just a quick check, If I were to have 24fps Film material telecined to 25fps DV CAM PAL tapes is the correct workflow the following -
1. Import a log file into FCP or Cinema tools and create a new database
2. Create a batch capture list
3. Batch capture the clips
4. Batch conform the 25fps material to 24fps in Cinema Tools
5. Synchronize captured clips with Cinema Tools database
6. Edit in FCP using the Cinema Tools 24fps from DV PAL easy set up
7. Finish Edit and export an EDL for film scan to DPX files
or would this be the correct workflow :
1. Import flx file into FCP
2. Batch capture
3. Conform 25 to 24 in FCP and synch with Cinema Tools
4. Check Lab data in Cinema Tools and correct any errors
5. Edit using the 24 @ 25 Easy Set Up
6. Export EDL or Cut/Pull lists from the Timeline in FCP
Thanks in advance J

Did you read the Cinema Tools manual?
There is a section discussing 24 to 25 TK transfer.
Sorry that I can't help further, I work in PAL but rarely with film. When we do we live with the 4% speed difference. I realize that there is a issue going back to a frame accurate 24fps film cut, it's just that you are asking for something very specific.
Everyone here is a user just like you, so you need the magic combination of people who work in PAL, and deal with 24-25 film transfers on a regular basis. Most folks here are working with NTSC.
Good luck. I hope you find an answer to your question.

  • How can I automatically change my edited timeline from 24fps into 25fps?

    Hello everyone,
I have a timeline in 24fps with 24fps footage. I have to convert it (the timeline and the footage) into 25fps, so I can put a 25fps Timecode in it (it was a 24fps 16mm film material and it has to be rescan in 25fps...). Is there a way to do that? I mean beside of reedit everything in a 25fps timeline. The footage was quicktime prores 4444, I made merged clips of it and edited it then, so I have only merged clips on the timeline.
I would be very thankful for any suggestions!

Hi Richard, unfortunately I need to burn in Timecode from the source clips, so this won`t help me:/ but thanks for your answer! I think the only possibility for me is to create a new timeline in 25fps, modify the source footage from 24 into 25fps and reedit it. Is there any way to use command match frame (and reversed match frame) from merged clips in a timeline to source material from which I created the merged clips? so the source footage and not the used merged clip will be loaded into the source monitor? it would make a reedit much much faster...

  • Convert 24fps to 25fps

    Ok,
I know this is discussed in other posts discuss issues which seem to be close to this, but nothing which seems to quite answer my question. My camera shoots in DVCProHD 720p24, 720p30, 720p60. But I need to export my final project to PAL. I seem to get a lot of jerky motion through motion scenes. Even keyframed photos seem to jerk. I've exported a lot of tests through Compressor with the pre-set for high quality DVD, only changing the NTSC setting to PAL, and seem to get the same jerk regardless of whether I shot in 60fps or 24fps. Even if I put those shots into a standard PAL timeline.
Does anyone have a suggestion for best results when converting either the media for my timeline, or converting my timeline after completion?
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Hey G,
A little more testing and I may have something here. I tried exporting the clip from the original 24fps timeline one more time, but this time, I used "Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive Material" from the Advanced Format Conversion>Apple Codecs. I then changed some of the settings as follows:
From the "Encoder" tab, I clicked "Settings" next to "Video" and changed the frame rate to 25fps
From the "Frame Controls" tab, I the frame controls on, and then:
    Resize Filter--Better (Linear filter)
    Output fields--Progressive
    Deinterlace--Better (Motion adaptive)
Rate Conversion--Best (High quality motion comp)
    Set Duration to: 24 @ 25
I should have done tests with one setting at a time, but I'm going to try to go back and do more testing tonight. But for now, I must admit that the result is very nice! I then imported my results into my 25fps timeline. This should mean I can just set my frame rate for new psd images to 25fps, and not worry about their motion. For pans or other motion shots that are jumpy, I'll try converting them using these settings.
You might be able to shed more light on what I've done as I don't really understand everything, but I was just sort of experimenting in the dark.

  • Converting 24fps to 25fps, HELP!!!!

Hey! I'd really appricated it if anyone out there could gimme some advice. I'm trying to convert a quicktime rendered out originally from Scratch (grading software) it was rendered out at 24fps and i need to convert it in FCP to a 25fps quicktime, i have rendered it out before but it keeps adding frames to compensate for the time difference, i need it to not do this. I've tried using quicktime convertor and setting it at 25fps there, but everytime i import it back to FCP it tells me that the clip i just rendered is at 24! I've also tried using the export quicktime movie option but no matter what i've tried there it just adds the extra frames. The clip is DVCPRO-PAL.
    Please can anyone help me.
    Thanks,
    Esther.

OK figured it out, converting the clip using cinema tools will give you correct 25 frame rate without the duplicate frames! hurray!!!!

  • 24fps to 25fps project

    Hi Im a bit confused.
I have some film clips that are examples of my work and were shot at 24fps. Ive made some qts from
After Effects rendered as 24fps H.264. I realize that IDVD wants the footage to be bought in at 25fps.
Ive tried rendering out of AE at 25fps with frame blending but the results are still not correct. I have a nice dvd project set up for 720x576 in which to put these qts and as this work will most probably be seen on computer monitors surely it doesnt need to be finished at 25fps. What would be the best route to take to get the best quality? The original material is 1920x1080

First off, you need RAM - probably 16GB if you're going to do a full on, real documentary.  Please, research on your mobo and see what your RAM options are.
To test whether CS5 will play your JVC files, import one and then click and drag it to the new item button on the bottom of the project panel.  you will see the mouse add a '+' button, let go and it will create a sequence based on the clips properties.  If it plays, you're good.  If it doesn't then you need to find out the specifics of the camera and/or file format that it uses.  It's not HDV at that point...
24/25fps is kind of like 220v, 221 - whatever works... ;-)  Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 will resolve frame rates, aspect ratios and codecs transparently on the timeline.  So, if your timeline is ultimately for PAL, then choose a PAL timeline and throw down the 24fps material as needed, it shouldn't be a problem and will play and output correctly for your destination format.
Finally, I'd suggest you read up on GPU's at Adobe Premiere Pro's page and consider investing in an nvidia Quadro or GeForce card to accelerate your effects and encoding.  This has been a bunch of the secret sauce that's made CS5 so successful.
    Hope you find this helpful,
    Dennis

  • 24fps and 25fps on one timeline. Separate sound sync problems?

I'm editing in CS3. Most of the footage is in 25fps. But some in 24fps by accident. I have a way of changing the 24fps footage into 25fps but will this cause problems syncing sound, which was recorded separately?

Well, there's a couple of way, but from what people have said, the easiest way is to increase the duration of the 24fps footage by 4% to bring it to 25fps. Otherwise, people have suggested that some of the newer versions of premiere pro will sort the problem out automatically by matching whatever frame rate to the sequence pre-set.
Also, why is it necessary to match the frame rate of the clips ? Does it affect the editing process or the final product in any way ?

  • How to convert 25fps Audio to 24fps ???????

    Hi,
I hv just finished a music video and convertd it to 24fps from 25fps to make " FILM LIKE LOOK" in After effects.....now the audio seems out of sync and i tried to decrease speed of audio by 4% as i heard somewhere but it didn't work.. is this possible in Adobe..I am using Adobe CS5 Production premium....Or is there any free software in the market to fix this????? m sure m not the 1st havng this problem ...
    NEED HELP
    Regards

You didn't say how you changed the timing in After Effects. Did you use time stretch? Time remapping? Conforming to a frame rate?
Here's a relevant excerpt from After Effects Help:
"Note: Conforming can change the synchronization of visual footage that has an audio track, because changing the frame rate changes the duration of the video but leaves the audio unchanged. If you want to stretch both audio and video, use the Time Stretch command. (See Time-stretch a layer.)"

  • 24p reverse telecine

I used to be able to reverse telecine 24p footage from HVX200 camera but now its not working and people are now telling me that it only works with 24pa footage. I used 24p workflow in the past and it worked fine. What has changed? I think I used the 24p workflow before final cut supported 24pa. I already have a whole project shot in 24p and need to reverse telecine.

    workflow:
    shoot with HVX200 in 1080i/24p
    import/transfer P2 files into FCP
Reverse Telecine to work with 24p version of footage in FCP without interlaced frames.
problem: "cinema tools reverse telecine" under the tools menu does not work as it did with same workflow in previous versions.
Ok, so it appears that the "pro-apps update 2008-05" (which updates among other things FCP to 6.0.5) is the problem. I have decided to work in 6.0.1 where the workflow works fine. Here is my troubleshooting log:
I used FCP remover to uninstall the entire studio
installed 5.0.2 and received corrupted file message when attempting to import P2 file
upgraded to 5.0.4, P2 files imported (no log and transfer in this version) successfully with a DVCPRO HD 1080i60 compression at 29.97 fps. I applied the "Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine" tool to a selected file (one of the same files I have been working with sense the beginning of this issue and will continue to use through out this troubleshooting) and it successfully processed the file resulting in a 24fps clip with no interlaced frames. YEAH!
I used software update as far as I could with this version and the workflow was still successful.
Installed 6.0.1 from CD, the workflow was still successful except the P2 files where coming in with a compression of DVCPROHD 1080p30. I don't see a problem with this. The resulting file was still 24p without any interlaced frames. And this version also has the log and transfer feature.
I ran software update and installed "Pro-Apps update 2008-05" and "Cinema Tools update 4.2.1". So I am working in FCP 6.0.5 and the problem starts. "Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine" just simply does not work. Nor does a reverse telecine work if I go directly through Cinema tools and bypass FCP with the imported P2 files (now quicktime).
I uninstall with FCS remover again.
I install 6.0.1 from the CD and perform the "Pro-Apps update 2008-05" only which takes me to 6.0.5 again. Still no good.
I uninstall with FCS remover again.
I install 6.0.1 from the CD. I don't do any updates and the workflow works great! So I will atleast do the log, transfer, and reverse telecine in this version. In the future I will shoot in 24pa, for that seems to work fine with the same workflow in 6.0.5.
I am going to leave this post as un-resolved sense Apple still needs to fix this in future versions.

  • DVC PRO HD workflow questions

I am about to edit a music promo shot using the Panasonic Varicam. I have a few questions.
We shot at 24, 25 (for a double speed track playback) and 60 fps are there any issues with this or things to consider when using the frame rate convertor in FCP. I am a bit concerned about the 25fps stuff, I notice that the DVC PRO HD settings in FCP are 24P.
Are there any other concerns with particular decks and FCP. I have done some searching, but none of it seems conclusive. From what I can see I will be fine using FW 400 to get it into the mac.
    Any thoughts and experiences appreciated.
    Keith

I'm with Tallguy...why did you shoot 25fps? That is a decidedly PAL format. That won't mix well with 23.98fps (24p) and 60p. YOu might have to use the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com in order to get it to play nice. Although thats for mixing 30fps and 25fps...not sure about 24fps and 25fps.
If you use the DVCPRO HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER you'll get great results.
Capture with a capture card via HD SDI if you can. Audio will be ahead of video by two frames if you capture via firewire. You'll have to slip it on the timeline when you edit...every clip.

  • How do you convert DV 30fps to 24fps?

I am trying to capture DV 30FPS NTSC. I can't seem to capture it to another preset of DV Pal or any other preset. I want to know if its possible to convert my footage to 24FPS or 25FPS. Would I use the media manager after capture or is there something I can do during capture?

Capture the footage as shot - you can't convert to PAL on capture.
You can do pretty good standards conversion (post capture) in Compressor, details here:
    http://www.macworld.com/2006/02/secrets/marchcreate/index.php?pf=1
I've tested this method and the results are pretty good. Or you could buy the Nattress plugins, which are excellent value.
Don't convert till you're finished your edit, then just convert the master or final sequence.
Remember also that the vast majority of PAL VCRs and DVD players can play NTSC, as can most newish PAL TVs, so you may not strictly need to convert at all.

  • Need Help with 29.97i Footage

I searched the forums here for an answer, but was unable to find anything. Hopefully someone here can help me.
I'm a student just learning the Adobe Production Suite. My class just shot its first film short. We used 16mm @ 24fps. The telecine process could only do 29.97i though, and it added the pull down frames in. However, we need to deliver at 23.98p. Is there any way to transcode this footage in Premiere or After Effects?
    Any help?

I prefer After Effects to do that. Double-click the clip in the AE Project panel to open the Footage window.  Step through the footage and see if some frames have interlaced combing artifacts while others don't.  If that's the case, then use the Interpret Footage dialog in AE to remove the pulldown.  Like this:
Drop the freshly interpreted footage into a 23.976 fps composition and render out a lossless digital intermediate (DI) video file.  Then edit that DI as desired in Pr.
If there aren't any combing artifacts in the Footage window, then just drop the clip into a 23.976 comp and export as above.  Alternatively, if no combing artifacts, you can use Pr and simply drop the telecined clip into a 24p sequence, then edit and export that sequence.
Since the original audio was probably recorded in sync with the 24fps 16mm film, it should be in sync with your DI or 24p sequence video.

  • Interlacing headaches

I've been given some ProRes files to work from in order to do an edit and make a DVD. The edit looks great in Final Cut, yet when I import the encoded in Compressor files into DVD Studio Pro I'm getting really awful 1-3 frame combing on some scene changes.
Some info on the two files I have been supplied with:
    1.  A film-sourced NTSC to PAL conversion (23.976 converted to PAL 25fps)
    2.  A film-sourced PAL 25fps  telecine
I've edited the files together on a ProRes timeline and have exported to Compressor with "Progressive" selected as the output file.
Can anybody suggest a solution for this? It's driving me crazy.

Long discussion on this last week. If it started off interlaced, leave it interlaced. Especially if you're mastering to DVD.

  • 'Embed system time as timecode' not accurate?

It appears that the "system time" timecodes are not updated on every frame, even when 'Embed system time as timecode' is checked, and 'Frame Interval' is set to 1.
The timecodes routinely latch onto a certain value, so that several timecodes in a row will report the same system time.
To study this behavior, I recorded a video of a computer screen displaying the current time as an epoch timestamp in milliseconds, and, from the recorded .flv file, read back the timecodes from each video frame as well as the timecodes embedded as amf0 'onFI' events as recorded by FMLE.
You may consult the data I collected below:
A graph showing embedded timecodes above video time:
    http://adamflorin.com/xfer/adobe/timecodes-ahead-of-video.pdf
    The complete data:
    http://adamflorin.com/xfer/adobe/fmle-timecode-bug.xls
    The FMLE-created video file used:
    http://adamflorin.com/xfer/adobe/fmle-output.flv
This data was collected on a 2008 MacBook.
Has anyone else seen behavior like this? I look forward to doing more tests, on different machines and with different settings, but because they're so laborious to compute, I thought I'd reach out first.
Unfortunately this is quite urgent, so I'm afraid I'll have to investigate other technologies. Any help is greatly appreciated, THANKS!

For what it's worth, frame rate appears to be a factor. I see this issue consistently at 30fps, but never at 24fps or 25fps, where the amf0 timecodes are fairly evenly spaced, at about the duration of one frame.
    I'm using VP6 at 640x360, a Logitech C910, Mac OS 10.7.3, FMLE 3.2.0.99.32.
This behavior seems pathological to me. Has anyone else seen this?

  • Video export issues with 5D mk II video

Using a trial version I keep running into issues with video slideshow export.
I have some 1080p '24fps' video clips from the 5D II, added them to a new Slideshow, did a Custom Export to h264 with height 720 (which from memory took the width to 1152) and 24fps - I want this to play on AppleTV, but the resulting video starts ok, but has multiple sections of blank video - in QT the frame rate has also been upped to 36fps!
It also takes a ridiculous amount of time to export a short clip, but that's seems par for the course for many of Apple's apps. This is on a 2008 8x3GHz Mac Pro with plenty of RAM, though running Leopard.
Anyone done any A/Bs of performance in Leopard vs Snow Leopard - does it make better usage of multiple cores? (They all have a little activity but it's 10% or so, perhaps 1 core at 70-80%, I can't understand even if it's not using all fully why one isn't getting maxed out with the conversion process).
The slideshow export function seems incredibly buggy - it used to output using AppleTv preset with incompatible frame rates, though they may have fixed that.

Just a thought, but 24p was just added to the markII through a firmware update.
Yes, which is why I thought it would be great for AppleTV which can only officially support 720p at 24fps (though 25fps will often work).
If I use an AppleTv preset it will now rescale to 960x540, but I want to use 1280x720.
Previously in 3.0 the AppleTV preset output 720p but at 30fps which is too high for AppleTV.
Are you sure it's not the footage? Have you tried it in FCP? Also, it maybe that 24p isn't supported in A3, but this all just conjecture on my part.
Good thought, but I would imagine QT is the engine supporting the Aperture exports, and if parameters are set correctly it should give the appropriate output.
I'll try using QT Pro and see what that does with a clip.

  • Newbie wants to type on PDF????

Let me start by saying, yes, I don't exactly know what I'm doing. I received a PDF job application via email and would like to type onto the PDF and send it back via email, instead of printing it out, writing by hand and faxing or snail mailing.
I bought a subscription to Adobe Export thinking this was the answer. After trying to convert it three times, I finally found one of the three conversion attempts and it doesn't look anything like the original application. Did I buy the wrong subscription? Is it not possible to type onto a PDF?
I would truly appreciate some input. Thank you

YouTube in the last few months has begun to use h.264 for their high quality videos. Sometime you'll see the tag line on a YouTube video, watch in high quality. Clicking on this tag line will bring up an h.264 of the video.
I found this excellent artical by Brain Gray for encoding videos for Youtube. I know it's for Apples Compressor. But, you can use the numbers as well for Quicktime Pro.
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/you_tube_reduxgary.html
    Codec: H.264
Frame Size: 640x480 (Note the 4:3 aspect ratio) YouTube wil downsize it to 480x360
I bet they will use the 640x480 size in the future.
Frame Rate: 30 fps Progressive (you can also use 24fps or 25fps Progressive)
    Compressor Quality: High
    Key Frame: Automatic
    Frame Reordering" Checked
    Data Rate: Set to Automatic
Audio: AAC, 44.1kHz, 128bps (mono or stereo)
Prepare for Internet Streaming: Fast Start
Here's a sample test I just uploaded to YouTube. I used Apple's Compressor.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq8CXdRFDjU&fmt=18
I have it already set the to play for you in high quality. As you can hear, the audio is in stereo (128 bps) and the video isn't that bad...for Youtube.
