290x lightning 20% Fan Speed

Hello,
i've noticed that at idle my 290x lightning is a little too noisy. All fans are pwn but with afterburner i can't get them to run
slower then 25%.
Is there a way to make that happen?

i really don't understand that.
290x lightning is really cold and quiet at full load but noisy at idle.
All fans are supposed to be PWM so why can't they go down to 20% like all pwm fans? is a really strange decision

  • 290X Lightning Middle Fan Noise

The middle fan on my 290X defaults at 45% and it's pretty noisy considering the card is idle. I now use fan control on auto and it drops it down to 30% when idle. Is it possible to make it 30% by default so it automatically boots to 30%? I have already updated my bios to the UEFI version and that made no difference to this particular problem.
I know it's not rocket science to start fan control when my system has booted, it just seems that fan control is being used to bring the fan speed down to what it should be anyway, a software fix so to speak

Did you ever figure out this 45% fan speed issue?
Mine does the same thing - boots at 45% and stays there until I open VGA Fan Control.
Like you say, it's easy enough to do, but it has become a little tedious over time...

So I bought a new cooler - Prolimatech MK-26 and two Noctua F12 fans. I connected the fans to the fan connector on the card and... !? I can't set the fans to less than 1000RPM! Even though these fans can spin at 300RPM and even though the temperature of the GPU is around 30C. So the card does not limit the fan speed settings, it limits it's rotation speed to 1000RPM. And this limitation doesn't seem to be in BIOS.
So if you want a really silent GPU, DON'T BUY NVIDIA!!! This limitation is stupid and it has no sense (it's not related to temperature), even the stock cooler would be deadly silent in idle without this "feature". Those two F12s can cool this card down even in afterburner, with power limit set to 111%, boost clock all the time.

  • Cannot adjust R5870 Lightning fan speed

    Hi @all!
    I have a big problem:
The catalyst-center and the afterburner show me options to slow down or speed up the vga-fan - but both do not work.
It seems again as made for the reference design with one fan.
How do I control the fan speed of my brand new R5870 Lightning 2-fan card?
    Any ideas?
    THX!
    EH

    Okay. THX so far... :-(
I want to get that damn thing silent!
    What about watercooling this card?
As far as I know, I need the plate (80,-) a water pump (40,-) a radiator (30,-) aquabox (40,-) and so on and so on... right?
So should I take the pc and walk to the next pc-shop to get the right parts?
Any better ideas? I still have the possibility to return the card to get a more quiet one - but that's a bad feeling... :-)

  • 290x lightning bios for fan control?

Hi, would an updated bios fix my 290x Lightning not having manual fan control?
    Serial Number: 602-v307-04sb1403020690
Here's a link to the bios:
    https : //drive . google . com/file/d/0B0bFt35qm1QVeWNhMW55Nmk2Tk0/edit?usp=sharing
The forum wouldn't let me post a link, so it has six extra spaces. Apologies.
    Two side questions:
    1) Afterburner (even after a reset) says +63 on voltage. Is that a display error and though it says +63 it's actually at +0 extra, or is it actually just defaulting to +63 right off the bat? So, for example, if I set it to +100 would that actually be giving it +100 or just +37?
    2) With Afterburner no longer being updated for new features, is there an alternative program that is continuing development?
    Thanks!

    For the vios:
Use the attached UEFI vbios versions to fix the fan issue.
    TV307MH.101 is normal vbios, TV307MH.111 is LN2
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (307_04s.rar) and put the included file (TV307MH.101 or TV307MH.111) on that stick.
Rename TV307MH.101 / TV307MH.111 to 101.rom / 111.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 101.rom (or 111.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

It is +63 by deafult (without changing values)? With Normal or LN2 vbios or both? Did anything change with new versions above?

I'm not aware of what you are talking as Afterburner is under development all the time. The latest version 3.0.0 final has just been released. >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

  • MSI R9 290X Lightning hardfreezing randomly

    Hello again everyone
As I've said in my first post requesting the new VBIOS that fixes the fan issues, I have recently gotten an MSI R9 290X Lightning.
I have had these problems since day 1, but I figured the new BIOS might help so I didn't mention them in my first post.
The problem is, after the installation of the card (i have not done any other hardware upgrades recently, the last upgrade i did was a year and a half ago with upgrading my PSU.) it started hardfreezing. I could only reboot the computer once it hardfroze, I could not move my mouse or do anything else. From what I have read from the one post that has pretty much exactly my symptoms ( www[dot]superuser[dot]com/questions/781673/random-hard-freezes-started-happening-after-installing-a-new-graphics-card ) is that apparently it is an incompatibility with the 700 and 800 series AMD chipsets. I would like some more confirmation though, as I have not found other sources saying that. It is still a relatively new card so the chances of someone using it on a not-so-recent mobo aren't big, so maybe that's why. Anyway, here are my specs:
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1050t @ 3.5 OR recently @ 2.8 (default) GHz
    Mobo: ASRock 890GX Extreme 3
    Memory: Kingston 4GB (x4) KHX1600C9D3/4GX
    GPU: MSI R9 290X Lightning
    HDD: WD Green 1TB
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    PSU: Thermaltake SMART M850W
This PC NEVER hardfroze before, and the only recent upgrade is the GPU. I have also done some other attempts:
    1) Switched from Normal to LN2. No change.
    2) Changed drivers. No change.
    3) Changed bios AND drivers (since fans work then). No change.
    4) Made sure the card is not overheating (it never crashes while playing a graphically intensive game anyway, it's ALWAYS on the desktop and/or in not so demanding games)
    5) According to that post, I tried overclocking (and overvolting) it, while in both Original and LN2 with the additional 6 pin plugged in. While it did last a long time, it just crashed 5 minutes into booting windows earlier, so I can't say for sure. It is somewhat random when it crashes.
    6) Used a system restore point to see if it might have been a software change. No change either.
One miscelaneous note: While it was on Original bios, it ALWAYS froze when launching Afterburner. I can confirm this as it froze 4 times exactly when Afterburner was started.
This is just about the most peculiar PC issue I've ever had so I really have no idea what else to do. I also ran a memory test, everything checked out fine.
Also, as I have said. It ALWAYS crashes on light load, no load (desktop) or when firing up Afterburner on Original bios. I ran a burn test 8 hours yesterday, and it did not crash. Then, 2 minutes after the test, it crashed while I was watching youtube. I can't seem to pinpoint the cause because, as I said, sometimes it crashes 10 minutes after the reboot (I am having to type this twice because of that...) or it can crash a day after reboot.
So, start with the suggestions guys!

Are all three power connectors of the Lightning connected?

  • 7970 Lightning BE Fan Issue (card overheating!!!)

I have Been having issues with a MSI HD7970 Lightning BE card. at the moment the on-line retailer refuses to acknowledge the issue.
i would post pictures of the screen grabs but cannot workout how!. but you get whats going on from below information.
I have already returned the card once at my own expense , and they said they couldn't find a problem with it, apparently the overnight stress tested it with fur-mark!
i have since had it returned to me and my expense , because they didn't find it "overheated" and i have tested it again on the 2 below systems, with the results below.
of course i have returned it to them and insisted on a replacement. i will update when more news is available.
has anyone else had issues with this card?
    Windows 7 x64 sp1 with all critical updates, Intel  i7 920 2.8ghz, ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard with Intel x58 chipset. AMD Catalyst 12.11, MSI AFTERBURNER v2.3.0 , MSI Kombustor v2.4.2.
As you can see the gpu is 98c and it has only been running  2min 58sec. from the graphs you can see the framerate  (top graph) becomes unstable because gpu clock rate (8Th graph) is erratic due to the card throttling back due to overheating.
You can also see that the FAN is being asked to run at 100% (6Th graph) but the fan is clearly not responding (7Th graph) as it is giving a fixed feedback speed of around 1000rpm, causing the card to overheat.  THE FAN SPEED IS NOT INCREASING OR DECREASING IT IS STAYING AROUND 1000rpm.
After Talking to the Tech Support guy who assured me that there is no problem with the card, and it is probably a compatibility problem with the Motherboard, I doubted this  (I mean this is why standards are developed/agreed right?)  But just to save a little time/effort I tried it in a newer Generation Motherboard, the result is below.
    Clean install Windows 7 x64 sp1, Intel  i3 3225 3.3ghz,  GIGABYTE Z77-DS3H motherboard with INTEL z77 chipset. AMD Catalyst 12.11, MSI AFTERBURNER v2.3.0 , MSI Kombustor v2.4.2.
Unfortunately I hadn't realized it didn't grab the frame rate graph before I dismantled the machine. But you can still see the gpu is 99c and it has only been running  5min 06sec and was overheating well before that.
From the graphs you can see the gpu clock rate (7Th graph) again is erratic due to the card throttling back due to overheating.
You can also see that the FAN is being asked to run at 100% (5Th graph) but again the fan is clearly not responding (6Th graph) as it is giving a fixed feedback speed of around 1000rpm, causing the card to overheat.  THE FAN SPEED IS NOT INCREASING OR DECREASING IT IS STAYING AROUND 1000rpm.

  • Tri-Fire 290X Lightning PSU power

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to this Forum over here at MSI, and I'm wondering if any1 could help me with my need
I need to know how much power three 290X Lightnings would consume and what monster of a PSU I'm gonna need for it,...
I already ordered the third GPU with another waterbock.
The deal is this, when I'm benching my system power draw is 1070W (measured @ wall), so there is absolute NO headroom for a third GPU with this PSU -.-
Now i need to know how much power a third OC'd lightning would need, because I don't want to buy a 1500W PSU if a 1350W would also be fine,... (Quad-fire will never happen   )
Has anyone experience with three Lightnings and their power consumption?
    My current setup:
    i7- 3930K @ 4,5Ghz @ 1,29V
    2x 8 GB Corsair Dominator Plats 1866 @ 2000 MHz
    2x 290X Lightning CF @ 1150/1650 -24/7 stable
    ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
    3xSSD
    1xHDD
    Corsiar HX1050 PSU
    Cooling:
    1x Aquacompuer aquaduct 360XT with 3x120mm fans @1200RPM
    1x MO-RA 1280 Rad with 9x140mm fans @800 RPM
    1x EKWB CPU Block
    2x EKWB Lightning Block
    1x EKWB 3-Way GPU Bridge
    Many thanks in advance
    e4gle

A system with a single reference design R9-290X requires 33A and a 600W psu. For a Lightning make it 40A and a 600W. Any further Lightning will add 20A more. A psu for triple Crossfire with 290X Lightnings should therefor offer 80A and 1000W minimum. The Corsiar HX1050 is therefor on the edge of it's possibilities but should work if no excessive oc is planned.

I have had this card since early February and have been running it without issue. It was stress tested in furmark immediately after install without bsod or reboot. The problem started about a week ago. I woke up in the middle of the night due to the fans running at 100% on the card. I could not get the screen to wake. I had to connect to the onboard passthrough from the i7. It did start working again after several reboots. The problem seems to pop up randomly. Either in the middle of the night when nothing is running or during light browsing. The issue never occurs when gaming. When the problem happens the blue lights indicating power usage do not light up. Currently the card is still installed but it is not coming back up after several reboots. I am currently running off of the IGP with no issue. The problem appears to be exclusive to the card.

Did some more testing tonight. My computer had been off all day today while at work. I switched my monitor back to the 290x and booted. The card was recognized and displayed correctly. I then ran furmark for two hours while running a cpu stress test as well. There was no issue what so ever. Later in the evening I watched a youtube video and the display cut out when it was closed.
I can try another card tomorrow night. It's a 570 gtx which would only be a test to see if the behavior is specific to the discrete video as this issue doesn't seem to effect the IGP.

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning XE Fan Problem

    Hi forumites
I am the proud owner of a new MSI GTX 580 Lightning XE Graphics card, so far I have not had any problems at all with my games and am happy to report the card appears to be functioning in the way I had hoped (better than my previous card).
However there is one annoying problem I have been having with the fans. For some strange reason the card appears to be spiking fan usage at idle for no reason.
I can be sat idle at desktop, or surfing the internet and for no reason the fan shoots up to 3500RPM.
In order to try and troubleshoot the problem I have done some fan usage monitoring with MSI Afterburner, as you can see here the fan speed seems to shoot straight up and then back down again.
My card has not been modified in anyway , neither have I fiddled with the card's BIOS.
Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing this problem?
My signature should hopefully contain my system specifications. Card appears to be functioning fine in games and 3dMark and I have not had ANY TDR crashes, just this fan thing is getting quite annoying!
    Thanks.
    John

Sorry I must admit I must have not made myself quite clear, it is both fans on the GPU which rev up to very fast speeds for a second or two. I have noticed that this only happens within the first say 10-20minutes of the PC being switched on, it then calms down and acts as normal after a while.
Even loading with Kombuster etc fans rev as expected to a speed to cool the card (~68C FULL LOADING in KOMBUSTER) I am pretty happy that this temperature is what I should be expecting as various reviews say this card is very cool compared to say a Generic 580. I also recall a post of your's Svet somewhere saying that the card loads from 65-70 depending on operation and cooling of case etc.
I shall have to take the side off and inspect the LEDs.

Yes, i confused your case with this one: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=155293.0

  • Radeon R9 290X Lightning High Heat?

I have a MSI Radeon r9 290x Lightning, and everyone else and all the reviews says its supposed to idle around 30c and then get up to 50c-60c with the fan on auto. Well mine idles at 53c with 0% gpu usage factory clock, and likes to get 80c+ if i leave the fans on auto while gaming. Anyone have any ideas as to whats causing this? Im using official 14.4 catalyst with the new vbios update that an MSI support person sent me to fix the fan issue. I have a 200mm and two 120mm spectre pro's , and an 80mm thermaltake all blasting on the video card.

Also most important information about this sort of products (GPU, CPU, RAM ): Performance=Heat.
Around 80-90 is pretty standard for AMD chips. Maybe create your own fan curve to bump up with higher temperature.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra ARU 2 fan speed controlling

Hi, i'd like to know if is it possible to control the fan speed via software with this motherboard. I've try with Speedfan, but it seems to have no effect :( .

    Hi,
    Sorry, it's not possible.

  • K9n Platinum fan speed control

    Hi!
    I have the following configuration:
    -Motherboard: MSI K9N Platinum v1.1
    -Bios: AMI v1.3
-CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core)
-CPU cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
    -Memory: Kingmax 2*1 GB
    -Video card: MSI NX7600 GT
    -Power Supply: Antec NeoHE430 430W
-Hard Drive: Samsung 250 GB SP2504C
-Operating system: Win XP Pro SP2
I would like to control the speed of the CPU fan automatically, according to the temperature.
    I tried
-the Dual CoreCenter utility from MSI, but it allows me only check the speed manually (If I did not miss anything)
-control from BIOS HW Monitor setting SmartFan but it does not work at all. ( Iam not sure but this can be because my cooler, it has 3 pin connector, and th MB user guide tells it works only if I use 4 pin connector. Can you confirm this?)
-Speedfan 4.31, it seemed working, but the system become instabile. I check the programmers site, and this MB did not supported.
Do you have any suggesions, experience about controlling the CPUfan?
    Thank you in advance!
    T.

    Thank you for the answers.
Unfortunately the smartfan feature is not working in my case.( set to 3-pin in BIOS) I asked the MSI Technical Support and they said:
As this motherboard includes 4 pins connector for cpu fan, the 4th pin is used to controlled cpu fan speed, if you use 3 pins fan, fan speed will not be changed automatically and smart fan will not function.
I feel a small contradiction here
Do you have other ideas other than smartfan and speedfan?

  • Yoga 2 13 - Fan speed goes almost silent in tablet mode

I find that the fan generates too much noise on my Yoga 2 13 (not pro), even when the laptop is completely idle.
It seems that somehow the temperature threshold for triggering the fan is set a bit too low (same problem seen on the lenovo yoga first version)
However, I noticed that when I fold my Yoga into tablet mode the fan goes almost silent (which is awesome).
Am I the only one experiencing this issue ?
Is there maybe a way to set the fan speed in laptop, tent and stand mode at the same speed as in tablet mode ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,

I was going to reccomend you use the Notebook fan control program, and I went to go find you a link for it.  However, when searching for it, I discovered that the Notebook fan control program doesn't work for the yoga 2 13 although it does work for my yoga 13.  It seems to be because the yoga 2 13 only has one fan while the yoga 13 has two fans.  I'm not sure.
The best bet for you is to search around on forums to see if anyone has discovered a different program that works.  I tried searching around but I couldn't find anything.
