3.4 gig Free on my Zen Xtra 60gig and this wonderful firmware won't allow anymore transf

I am beginning to really hate Creative and how they choose Microsoft over their loyal customers. I cannot transfer anymore music to my ZenXtra 60 even though I have 3.4 gig free. I keep getting error messages saying library is full or I get just an error message. I bought this player to fill up 60 gig's not just under 60 gigs. Is this company for real? It took me close to 3 weeks to transfer to this player what normally would of taken up to 4 days. I HATE THIS FIRMWARE I HATE THIS FIRMWARE. Anyone know what's going on?

All the same I can't see how can this hurt to try...
Do try it and see for yourself, even send an email to support and ask them if and how can you revert to v firmware...
Do try it anyway, it can't be worse than sulking...
Either way do remember to BACK UP since a firmware reload deletes everyhting!!!

This firmware upgrade enables playback of subscription music service content on the Zen Xtra, but may reduce the total number of files that the player can store. The actual results will vary depending on content specifications, and the result may be more evident in players with larger capacity.
Arg!
Does this mean that the "wonderful" MTP uses cluster sizes that further reduce the possible storage ammount?
As if I didn't already hated it as it is...

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra play and share update probl

I have a jukebox Zen Xtra and I tried to update it for the play and share so it will work on my xbox 360. When I went to update the firmware everyone was going good and then it rebooted and stayed at the recovery menu and just stopped. I tried reconnecting it and it registers that it is connected to the USB for a second then it says device not connected. How do I get it connected again, or what am I doing wrong. I just want to update it so I can use it on my Xbox. How do I get it to update right? Thanks.

    Manning888,
Which firmware are you referring to Assuming you are referring to the PlayForSure firmware, make sure you have Windows XP with at least SP and WMP0 installed. Also, you can try looking into this Knowledgebase article SID0053.

  • Problems downloading between Nomad Zen Xtra 40GB and PC (XP S

    Help please
I've a new Zen Xtra and have installed all the software that came with it and then reinstalled as per the instructions given in another post.
I can see no sign of the drivers under the device driver although, not always, the PC pops up a message saying 'do i want to organise'. I can see my Nomad files in Nomad Explorer and Windows Explorer. i can even, sometimes, after each software reinstallation, even transfer a few, about 0 to 20, files before i get an error message telling me thw player is busy or disconnected. I have left the connection in place overnight but still no celarance.
Any ideas as I really feel like throwing the bloody thing out the window!
    Thanks

    Guys
Thanks for your responses. Sorry I haven't got back - been away a few days.
    Situation is this.
new Nomad Zen Extra and Dell 3000 running XP SP2 52mb ram 40gb dri've.
Loaded software with Nomad and unable to sync or transfer. PC could 'see' nomad and read preloaded files but when any form of transfer tried I either got 'device not connected' or, occasionally, a few files would transfer before 'hanging'. Erroe message stated'device busy or not connected'.
Since then I have followed these instructions given in another reply on this forum to the letter.
<SPAN>Here is a step by step of what I would do to try to get back to square one and get MediaSource and the Driver installed.
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>) Disable any antivirus and background programs on your system and disconnect the Jukebox from USB
<SPAN>2) Go to control panel/add remove programs and remove both Mediasource and the Jukebox Driver
    <SPAN>3) Reboot
<SPAN>4) Ensure AV and BG programs are still disabled
<SPAN>5) Search for any updated Chipset drivers for your motherboard (if you need help with this tell me your computer Mft. or your motherboard mft. and I will find out what you will need) and install them.
    <SPAN>6) Reboot
    <SPAN>7) Repeat step 5
<SPAN>8) Go to www.nomadworld.com and go to downloads/drivers and applications. Select the Jukebox Zen USB 2.0 and your version of Windows. Click get files. Download four files:

    <SPAN>Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.0.0)<SPAN></LI>
<SPAN>9) While these are downloading, go into rescue mode on the player and run a cleanup. A reload OS will hopefully not be needed.
<SPAN>0) Install the files in the above order. You will plug the Jukebox Zen in at the end of the driver install to complete the install. Leave it connected all the way through the remaining ste
    ps.
Disconnect after the last file is installed.
<SPAN>0) Reboot, reconnect the player and test.

<SPAN>So I think of all the up-to-date firmware etc...
<SPAN>I've also loaded and installed WMP 0 - which can also see the Nomad and has transferred a few files before hanging as above...
<SPAN>I can also see the driver in my device drivers under usb controllers. the driver listed is Creative Labs .26.2.0
<SPAN>I have managed to transfer my tracks (3500+) to the Nomad by burning as MP3 cd's and loading through my works laptop (Win2000). I used the Creative Media Source on the original software which came with the Nomad to do this. <SPAN>I really want to get it working properly on my main PC so I can get the max from the Nomad.

  • Zen Xtra failed to reboot during firmware upgr

I attempted to upgrade the firmware on my Zen Xtra to Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03. Everything appeared to be functioning correctly until it came the time to reboot the device. The player turned off but then never turned back on. I tried to manually turn the player on but nothing. I now can't turn the player on at all and I fear I have a doorstop. I can't reach the maintenance menu either. Hopefully someone has an idea. Thanks.Message Edited by trip42 on 02-20-200607:59 AM

Your problem was that your computer was not properly prepared for the firmware update. This is something you could of prepared for if Creative did a scan of your computer before you attempted to do the firmware update. A scan would of revealed several flaws. But since Creative does not do this they leave it in the hands of the person doing the update to prepare a computer which they have no idea how to prepare because they have never done a firmware update.
There is little hope that you can fix your Xtra now that the firmware update was not completed.
But to properly prepare your computer requires you to install some hotfixes and make some minor changes to some settings on your computer.
    The hotfixes are these:
    Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/8922
    DRM performance fix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902344
    Fix for large data transfers:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/89536
And the minor changes are all done in this file. Its unfortunate that Creative doesn't do a scan to properly check computers that they do support PlaysForSure..... But you know its not Creative's fault entirely. Those hotfixes are offered via Windows Update as Optional downloads, and in most cases the hotfixes solve alot of problems. Also Service Pack 2 solves even more problems with USB devices than SP. So you can't really put the blame on one company/person...

  • Zen Xtra 30 GB: slow since firmware upgr

I own a Zen Xtra 30 GB MP3 player, and right off the bat, I admit I upgraded the ifrmware without removing the old firmware.
Ever since doing this, my player has been slow on connecting via USB. I rebooted into rescue mode, removed the OS, and reinstalled the latest firmware upgrade (.20.08 I believe).
My Zen Xtra still takes forever to connect via USB, and that's even if it does connect at all.
Any ideas where I should go on this one...

dc08 wrote:No thanks to anyone on here trying to help me out or anything...
Do you realize that we don't actually work for Creative and, therefore, don't owe you anything?
If you get help then you should see it as a bonus and be grateful - not expect help and moan when you don't get it.
I had the same problem on my Open Uni'versity forum in the UK - other students expected help from everybody else on the course and then gave us a slagging when we didn't give it!
I'll now duck back under my stone and wait for the incomings....

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 30GB- tried to upgrade firmware. Process hung, now nothing wo

This is really frustrating. I know my MP3 player is old, but it was working. Trying to find all the information I needed to have to upgrade this player so that it would work with Windows Vista was difficult. It wasn't all in the same place. I just kept searching and finally found what I thought was everything I needed. I tried to upgrade the firmware to Version 2.0.03 so I could use it with a Windows Vista computer. The process "hung" and now nothing works. I've tried to reinstall the .20.08 firmware, but the computer won't recognize that the player is connected. How can I get any firmware reloaded so I can try to upgrade again or at least still use the player on a Windows XP machine Thanks,

The same exact thing happened to me yesterday with my Zen Touch 40 GB player. It was working fine, now after my firmware upgrade attempt it's unrecognized by the PC and has no firmware installed but appears to be stuck in "Recovery Mode". There is obviously something wrong with the Creative Firmware update - this should be a very straightforward process, but instead it seems to be wrecking mp3 players. I contacted customer support and they offered to sell me assistance since my player is ancient (2 years old).

  • Zen Xtra - Browsing and playing music organized in folde

I have my music organized in folders, no useful id3 tags or anything. I just want to start playing in one folder and the player should play all the songs in that folder and subsequent folders.
I feel like dealing with playlists or id3 tags would be a pain cause I need to update them every time I get a new song, not to mention that I'd have to organize my existing collection all over again. Let me know if I'm missing something and there's an easy way to do this, otherwise I gotta get rid of this thing

What do you use to upload music? I just used the media player sync, and it just moved everything into a flat list.
Is there even a way to browse and play folders on the zen? I don't see any such feature in the menu.
I have XP 64bit, I updated my firmware to PlaysForSure, but I don't see my device in windows explorer. I'm guessing that's one of my problems. Media Player seems to recognize it just fine though as a PlaysForSure device.
To clarify, I WANT to browse and play the same folder structure that's on my hard dri've.

  • Zen Xtra 60gig PlaysForSure firmwa

I've been debating about putting this firmware in but i'm wondering 2 things.
. Will my Xbox 360 recognize my mp3 player?
    2. It says that I can lose space and it's noticable in the larger models (I have the 60 gig model). How much space am I going to lose? I mean,I don't want to end up only being able to use like 45 gigs of space, else I would have bought the 40 gig model from the start. How much space do I actually lose by installing this firmware?

I'm just making sure. Because I ended up ripping the same CD in 2 sessions and then it wouldnt show up in the one folder no matter even if I dropped them into the folder with the others AND editing the IDtags correctly. I ended up having to re-encode the files themselves and type all the IDTags in again by hand.
Example: I ripped track -5 of the Clerks Soundtrack. The disc was dirty so I wiped it off and then continued from 6-0. On my player -5 would show up at the Clerks Soundtrack and then 6-0 would show up as ANOTHER folder called Clerks Soundtrack. I had all the tags edited correctly for the Album and they were all inside folder, but the player showed 2 just because I ripped them in 2 different sessions.

  • Zen Xtra stop playb

Alright, call me daft but I just got my Zen Xtra 30GB and was wondering if its possible to actually 'stop' playback of an mp3 instead of just pausing it's Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

    wulfie wrote:
so, instead of 'stopping' playback, I can just turn it off? I guess that's something I'm not used to yet
Yes, but then when you turn it on again it will be playing at the same volume and same point in the song when you turned it off. I usually just hit pause before I turn it off so I don't turn it on to a halfway played song.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra Freez

Sometimes when I fast-forward tracks, the Zen Xtra freezes and the only way to recover it is to press the reset button or to take out the battery and put it back. This happened several times and I was wondering if this is normal or if my player is defecti've and I should exchange it. Thanks a lot!

wow...........i have the exact same problem. And i bought mine about a week ago. Isn't weird.
I sort of gave up on mine thou. I only use it now while it's plugged in cause it freezes way too often when it's going off the battery.

  • Zen Xtra problem with latest firmw

Hi everyone. I've tried searching for this but I can't find the answer.
I've recently upgraded my Zen Xtra 60gb to the latest firmware on the Creative Labs downloads page (2.0.03). Re-copied all my music back onto it and some of the albums which were fine before now play out of order.
All my music is correctly tagged with track number information and when I view the files using the new Zen Explorer addin the tracks are all present with the track number prefixed by the filename. But on some albums when I right click and choose properties there is no track number stored.
How can I fix this? Is it the way I transfered my music onto the player (I just copied the folders using explorer to the 'My Music' folder on the Zen)? Or is this a 'feature' designed to get me to change my mp3 player?

I'm not sure why some files lost thier tag info. But I'll tell you this, adding tag information through Media Scource does not wirte to the actual file.
And when you export files from Media Source, you have configure it a certain way to add the tag info to the files while its exporting.
Zen Explorer may be the sameway, so check that.
Theres a program called Tag&Rename, it can correctly Tag mp3 in batch. I think the free version is like a 4 or 30 trial but it should be long enough just to get your job done.

  • Creative ZEN Xtra Hangs on EAX Screen, Recovery Scr

Hi there. When I turn on my Zen Xtra it hangs on the EAX opening screen and when I use the Reset switch to go into the Recovery menu the menu shows up but I can't do anything, can't scroll the menu or select the option the menu starts on. I also downloaded the latest firmware for the player and when I tried to install it a message came up saying that the device wasn't connected when it was. Is there any other trick I can use to try to reformat/reinstall firmware?

If you do some research (although I'm going to save you the trouble).. there's this thing called "percussi've maintenance" that you both can try.. where you (at your own risk of course) smack the Zen Xtra on it's side toward your hand.. just give it a good thump, that's all.. thus freeing the hard-dri've's reading head from it's stuck position.
I bought a (supposedly broken) Zen Xtra on ebay for 60 bucks because of the issue you both have explained, and I got it working within thirty seconds after I opened the box. What a steal I keep saying to myself!
And if you happen to have the issue where you boot up the player and it goes from the 'Creative' screen to the 'EAX' screen, off and then on again, doing this in a continuous loop.. all you've got is a dead battery that needs to be properly charged. I bought another (supposedly broken) Zen Xtra on ebay, this time for 75 bucks, where I took the battery out, plugged in the 5V power adapter, let the thing boot up, waited until the backlight went off (it won't work unless the very minimum amount of juice is being pulled.. no backlight, usb connecting, music playing, etc.), and then dropped the battery back in while it was on.. and voila! A jump-started battery charge.
Sorry I crammed it into so short of an explanation.. I'm in a rush.. please feel free to message me privately with any questions.. But that should do it for y'all.

  • Windows XP driver problem - Nomad Zen Xtra and Zen To

I have both a Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB and a Zen Touch 20GB, both of which were working fine with my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer until a couple of days ago. I had recently put firmware 2.0.03 onto the Zen Xtra, and was using the drag-and-drop method in Windows Explorer to copy loads of albums across to it from my music folder. It seems I might have tried to copy too much over at one go, because eventually the file copying just stopped, and I had to unplug the Zen Xtra from the PC to abandon the copy process. Since then, neither Zen device has been properly recognised by any of my PCs. When I plug the Zen Xtra into?a USB port, Windows brings up the messages: "Found new hardware: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" and "Found new hardware: MTP device", then brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard, even though firmware 2.0.03 is supposed to provide "seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" (I have WMP0.00.00.4036 installed). The Zen Xtra's display does not show the "docked" icon except when plugged into my laptop (running XP Home Edition)... but even on the laptop Windows still asks for a driver, which it then fails to install properly. When I plug my Zen Touch into my PC, it detects that an MTP device has been connected, but Windows Media Player doesn't list it under the Sync tab, and when I try to install the "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative Zen Touch Players", the installer complains that "Setup could not detect any portable device on your system... please ensure that Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed". The device's firmware version is 2..0, and as I have already said, both this and the Zen Xtra were working fine with my PC up until a couple of days ago. Additionally, the "docked" icon?no longer appears?on the Zen Touch's display when plugged into the PC. I have made the registry change suggested in Creative Knowledge Base Solution ID #9287, and my PC is up-to-date with Windows Hotfixes. I've also tried uninstalling all Creative programs and reinstalling them one at a time, but I can not get my PC to correctly work with the Zen devices anymore. Any suggestions? Also, is there some kind of Factory Reset that I can do to get my Zen Xtra back to an earlier firmware?

I had the same issue. My battery ran down during a sync, then I was unable to sync again.
The Zen is showing up fine in the device manager, but none of the software (Media Player, MediaSource) sees it.
Finally, after a day of trying new drivers, running cleanup, etc. I decided to go into the Zen's recovery menu. To get there, press and hold the Play button and press and hold the reset (use a paperclip) button while powering up.
Once there, select the first option in the menu to Clean up the system. I forgot what it's called and I'm in the middle of a sync now, so can't look.
    Worked fine after that. Phew!
If your device is being detected fine, but cannot sync, try that and post here if it fixes it.
